    It always makes me feel good to see people that know what they're doing make mistakes and own their mistakes, so that not every how-to video on TH-cam is a 30 second "Pull here and then push this and the part magically falls out and then you wish it into place and bam you're done!" exercise in wishful thinking. This is why I love you guys.

    About two weeks from now you will discover the CV joint is failing and end up replacing the entire axle anyway. 😂 At least that has been my experience, I am done messing with CV boots and CV grease, that stuff is nasty. I noticed the CV bearings were all nice and clean when you packed it with the new boot. I know it wasn't like that when you took it out though, If you don't have a parts washer, doing this in your garage is a huge mess, the grease stinks and gets everywhere.
    Even if it cost $200-$300 for a new axle it is worth it IMO, life it to short to deal with that mess. Thanks for sharing, been there many times.

      When im working all week the last thing i want to do is struggle with that boot. If i spend 150-250 bucks extra i can do it much easier and faster. And still have a weekend left. Absolutely worth it

    Pro tip you fill the cv joint with grease before you install the shaft it will pack the joint all by itself. Might have to put the hub bolt in if it's an open design. Also use a sleeve (piece of pipe) over the hub splines to protect them. Finally use the biggest hammer available with in reason and don't swing like a Sally.

    "UNSTRUGGLED" is a Real Word Now!! I SO understand your pain!! Work on multiple brands, manufacturers, and parts, and come across something so simple that Whoops Our Azz (i feel a whoop coming on, a whoop coming on, 5...4...3,2,1) My MkV TDi has been rebuilt from the sub-frame down. It required One single Driver side, Outer CV joint replacement. Purchased the parts from Meyle HD. Installed as prescribed. Still; That thing is not right. Two separate shops, another set of eyes have said it's good. Still painful.

    I have been there too many times. For me it is a crash for one week.I appriciate a Real TH-camr has courage to show that under extreme self-inflicted stress he crashes just like other animals. It looks like we have to learn to trust ourselves in right places right amounts. But sometimes it goes wrong anyway. One tries to trust like "I Can, I'm able" where as it should have been "I feel I'm wrong and I need to trust that now".

  • @Ethomsen18
    @Ethomsen18 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can use the old bolt threaded in just straight into the end joint shaft and it's enough to pop the end joint off of the cir-clip. You could also try the bar of soap truck so you don't have direct impact of the bolt onto the drive shaft

    been there more than once, never had a mismatching clamps though. Oh and the axel grease, I call it "skin of evil" as it gets everywhere and is pain to get off.
    Interesting approach with the skin of evil, I always worked the grease INTO the bearing to insure the proper lubrication. Then again you are using old bearing.

  • @TheTinhipvt

    It can be way easier if you just tight CV Axle bolt all the way in while the axle itself is straight. The bolt will go deeper inside and put the outter hub out. And you can also grease it though that hole after you done putting everything back together to keep the job less messy

    just replaced my cracked outer boot for my 2014 q5. Definitely a pain in the ass but so much better paying $30 dollars for a replacement cv boot than paying probably over $1000 for audi to do it, if not more. while i had the vehicle jacked up i figured i would order new pads and rotors along with painting my calipers. just waiting on back ordered rotors from stop tech.

    THIS EXACT PROBLEM happened to me or more like is happening to me one full day trying to get the clamp on then the next day my brother and dad trying because they thought I was joking and wasn't strong enough. I quit for a few days. Came back looked at the parts more closely the old clamp said 104.5 but the new with the boot kit says 102.5. Try to look why, seems the previous owner replace the axle with different part number try to find right boot kit for another two days of research and calls and so called vw audi specialist couldn't find it. I just use a universal clamp and will install it and if the boot comes off or axle brakes I will replace with right axle part number. I'm just done trying to find the right boot for the axle.

    So I went to replace a low beam bulb, pulled the old one out and the new one would not go in and had a different color o-ring. I already did this very job a couple of times with same part from Amazon with not problems. I figured they changed the part some way and now it won't work and got all hot under the collar. Turns out I pulled the high instead of the low beam bulb....Duh!

    I just replaced both CV axles, brand new from a large supply chain here in the south. Shortly after installing both, the boot on each axle on the transmission side of each shaft slipped out from under the clamps. Replaced both of them under the warranty... and the same issue happened on both axles within a week of driving. Has anyone seen this issue before? Do you think any other part of the suspension could be twisting causing the boots to stretch? Btw, NEW engine and transmission mounts were installed 3 months before the axles were replaced.

    you squeeze the grease into the CV joint so it covers all inside the bearings not into the CV boot

    • @PetesWorkshop
      @PetesWorkshop 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. And just cut a small hole in the grease bag so you can ‘pressure inject’ it into the joint. IF you have any grease left over then add it into the boot.

  • @davidgruen7423

    Oooh my god. It's sooo difficult to watch this. This should be named - what NOT to do when changing cv boots. You were hammering inside the cv joint - causing damage to the bearing beds, when you could just screw in the hub bolt and tighten - it would drive out the whole joint effortlessly and damage free. You never bothered to degrease and clean the joint, cup and bearings. You never even greased up the balls. The grease is supposed to be squeezed in a thick layer onto each ball's bed in the joint. Then the bals get installed and lubed on top.... whatever.... probably not a great idea to make videos like that if you're gonna do everything completely wrong.
