In 1962 I rode on a 9F from the Consett ore terminal to Tyne Dock, and back. A great experience.

I remember being 5 years old when Prince Charles was on that train, we all stood outside at Annfield Plain Infants with flags to wave and when the train went past, all the curtains were closed so he couldn't see us waving....never forgotten that, nice blast from the past!

All the current problems with the railways were due to the Government wanting to make the railways pay. In this, it lead to the demise of the robust locomotive-hauled trains in favour of noisy DMUs or powered carriages with underfloor engines. Nowadays, the DMUs appear to becoming more expensive in terms with increased maintenance as their reliability deteriorates and leads to so many cancellations of train services.

I lived in Consett and I lived In Moscow. Of the two, I prefer the temperature in the latter.

This was a one off. The commentary to the film says that passenger services stopped in 1955 - I thought it was ten years later. I remember the station at Consett, you would see it clearly when going over the bridge from Consett into Delves Lane. The station must have been dismantled some time in the early 1970s.

The long-scrapped 46026 Leicestershire & Derbyshire Yeomanry was the diesel used on that turn. Its name had been rededicated to another example at the Great Central Railway.

The Consett railway would be ideal for the Newcastle Metro railway to extend if only time will tell.

Didn't realise that the line was still operating as recently as 1984. Assumed it had closed back in the 1960's.

I think TH-cam is listening, because ever since I had a conversation about Consett recently there's been loads of cool old vids showing up. Anyway, I remember this very well. I was about 18 and working in a local garage and along with everyone else was given a warning by our boss Tom. Looking all serious he went on to say. "If I see a single bare arse belonging to anyone here, pointing towards Prince Charles, you can all just toodle on off to the Jobcentre. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!" LOL, like we would do such a thing!

Hardly. They were losing huge amounts of money before she came into power in May 1979. If you want to subsidise loss making industries with your money, feel free to do so. I don't want to. Blame those that nationalised these industries in the first place.

Unfortunately its not just the Tories Labour are as bad, they got into power in the 60’s promising to halt closures, did they ugh NO!
They are all liars and still prefer the car. Labour have also yet again stated they will nationalise the railways, Prescott stated that in 97, did they…. no!! I rest my case.

When you think Consett used to be extremely well served with railways. There was the line from Gateshead up the Derwent Valley, this one from Birtley past Stanley and the Lanchester Valley line, all converging on Consett. It's not all bad as at least Consett is very well served with cycle routes!

Don't forget the Stanhope & Tyne railway too, it went up to Burnhill junction, then from there down to Bishop Auckland/Darlington, and west to Stanhope, east gate and crawlyside.

I've been working off and on for a couple of years now rebuilding old / demolished parts of Consett in 3D using modeling and animation tools on windows.
There's a couple of screen shots on my flikr page, but youtube won't let me post a link so you'll need to go to flickr.com and search for 'shawty_ds'
I have one of Station Bridge and the railway station platform in it's original place on Google Earth with satellite photography on so you can see where the modern day buildings are.

There's a guy who has built nearly all the railways in the north east in the Trainz rail simulator. You can see some of his work on this 65 page thread

@@lewisner looks good, I can see a few Consett ones in the first post, what we are doing in the "History of Consett Steelworks" Facebook group is rebuilding all of Consett in as much detail as possible, rather than just the generic factory/building approach from trainz, we have a number of folks who worked at the steelworks so remember a lot of how it was laid out, and we have a staggering 10k plus archive of photos of the steel works, it's railways and the town from almost every angle. :-) Unfortunately, I doubt I'll live to see it complete, it'll take us several lifetimes :-O
