In the same way that people who are consumed with pyramid schemes slowly lose the people around them. Good thing it’s already revealed to be a scam before it can hurt more people.
Around 23 minutes in the video he started having freudian slips. He was saying "We" all video long when talking about his company and game developmen. Around 23 minutes in he started saying "I". When talking about the development team.
"Good Lord what is happening in there?" "5000 procedurally generated settlements? "5000 procedurally generated settlements!? With that little money, without any previous press, with such a small team!?" "Yes." "May I see it?" "... No."
Hey Kira! I am a game developer, and even though I only released singleplayer games, I have some experience in working in MMOs and multiplayer games. What he was saying in the beginning about creating server infrastructure is quite complex and demanding process, but it's not as time consuming as content creation (making models, textures, level design etc). Basically it takes months of work and a few, or even one good coder, not years and a team of 3d modelers and designers. So realistically, they could've done this, in theory, and they could've shown a simple gameplay demo of multiple instances of clients running in the same world. (something like this video starting from second minute th-cam.com/video/Gf4y-MMyZC4/w-d-xo.html ) They obviously didn't. Overall in game development simple player interaction and player combat, aswell as server infrastructure always come first in the process of making a game, so they should've been showing players running on an empty field and beating grey cubes for years now, not showing assets creation, character customization, environments etc. All this stuff is for marketing generally and comes AFTER you locked down all you mechanics in the development. So there is basically zero chance that this guy ever made something playable.
They did do this, but they were using Improbable's - Spatial OS, which had an SDK for Unreal and Unity. which basically creates all the Server side DB/Packets. they had it working but never released to public to test. but then they stopped using it, because they decided to use JavaScript in Spatial OS and Improbable dropped support for JavaScript for the server side stuff.
OR... maybe he did it in the wrong order? He doesn't seem to do things in the manner that others do things. Or maybe there's a reason why he chose the order he did things in? I just don't like to speculate or accuse OR assume for that matter. I do however have loads of questions. I like for a person to explain themselves rather than to just accuse them based on some standard practice. Not everyone functions inside of a cookie cutter box. I have a question for you though... Say he chose to do things in the order in which he did and then planned on doing the player interaction and player combat afterwards? Is the order you spoke of THAT important to do first or is there anything wrong with doing it after? I genuinely would like to know so I can better understand how and why things are done in a specified manner. Although he WAS working on the combat for a while. They were trying to get the combat mechanics to a point where all aspects of it were acceptable to Caspian so they could move on. Not sure what happened with that because everything stopped, so I can't even begin to speak on it. LOL! However, I would really like it if you could answer my question because I'm vary curious about that process. Thanks!
@@covidmakesmoney866 Don’t be rude. It’s unnecessary. All I did was ask questions because some times people like to do things their own way and not in a manner others do. So I was only asking IF that was a possible scenario and it just didn’t work out for Soulbound. Geez! No need for name calling. What is it with people that just like to attack others because they ask a simple question? It makes no sense especially when I have said nothing to you that was disrespectful or otherwise. I’m not a sensitive person so my feelings are not hurt, but as I said it makes no sense to attach someone unprovoked. You should maybe try being a bit more respectful to others who have done nothing to you. Just saying...
12:28 "The world is too large to provide as single client download..." Er... what? In an age with games that get near, even top 100 GB, their world is 'too large'... with those low poly graphics and textures?
Is it weird that I clicked on this exceptionally fast? Its like an MMORPG Soap-Orpah.... EDIT: If they're going to claim that no crowd funded money was wasted, then they need to publish those findings. As that is crucial information that your games community needs to know. Its the same reason AoC publishes their financials each year, as do other Indi or crowd funded game studios.
I worked on game projects (3d artist) and, as many here, also realized lots of problems. No details. No plan. Just talking. Their explantions often made zero sense. HOW will they run hundreds/thousands player cities EACH filled up with up to 10.000+ detailed NPCs + players moving around and constantly interacting with each other ? HOW was switching from 100% polygon based graphic design to developing an ADDITIONAL voxel-based game-version saving time and resources ? (thats twice the assets to do) WHY is a huge part of "their" graphic-assets stuff that can be found in online 3D stores ? They said they spent half a million dollars of their money and developed for half a year on their own before they presented the project on kickstarter - So what exactly did they do on their own ? Why did they have to buy lots of assets an experienced artist could do in a day/few days ? WHY was Caspians wife on the payroll ? What did she do ? WHAT happened to the roadmap ? Originally the plan was to release the game in 17 or 18 ? Afterwards they said it was about releasing a demo version to get a publisher on board. That wasn t what they advertised. And neither full game nor demo for a publisher has been released till (almost) 2021 ! HOW will they finance the game ? Noone will invest now. I asked some of those questions on discord before and got no or crap answers. "Funny" thing.... After caspian let all his employees go their admin took it out on the community and kicked several people, who asked too many/annoying questions over the last few months/years, from the discord server without any reasons. I even know about threats from the admin !!!! I invested hundreds of dollars into elyria and regret it. I hope they get what they deserve. My interest/hypes for games was reduced alot thanks to elyria. Before I supported several games in development- now I don t. I personally won t buy any game any (ex) soulbound member has been working on and also won t use xsolla anymore since that company is involved in the scam. I might be wrong, maybe soulbound studios isn t doing a scam (I don t believe that though, rofl), maybe they are just the least professional company I have ever seen. 22:00 I think the sentence means that he has understood that he has to finish one feature at a time. A few years ago he claimed to follow a rope-bridge development model in which he worked on all subsystems simultaneously instead of actually delivering features.
The best part is that the "fundraisers" consisted selling in-game items for systems that probably weren't even going to bein the game even if it was released. I remember on discord someone paid 200 dollars for "royal bees". the more people spent, the more shitty kits for obscure mechanics they would get.
@@samarkand1585 yeah... "deliverables" is just a programmer word for "milestones" basically. Traditionally it's a step/feature that you'd be "delivering" to your boss or client
...and if those milestones are on the critical path (essential to success according to the specifications), your project is on very thin ice if not doomed, at which point the project manager/client would likely replace you with someone who can meet such milestones and contract additional 'talent' to get things moving properly, and that's if your client still wanted you at all. This is literally stuff you learn on your first college-level project management course. Some devs can make good PMs, but this guy is not one of them.
Watching this guy describe how great his game is reminds me of running into that guy at the bar who wants to tell you what a bad ass he is and all the things he can do to you. Cool. Do it. I don’t need a 30 minute monologue about your skill level. I can figure that out in about 30 seconds of actual fighting.
The pandemic situation is a good reason for DELAYS, as some areas had heavy restrictions and studios had to spend time adapting to working from home, which will never be as efficient as working in the studio premises. However it is not a good excuse for why your studio suddenly ran out of money. Quite the opposite, you weren't actually making anything you were selling anyway. The speed of work slowing down has zero effect on CoE income, as you can't really slow down "nothing". Quite the opposite really, if anything people are at their homes, you can lower operating costs at your company premises, and potential customers are much more involved and looking into virtual worlds to spend their time on, which CoE is selling (or at least they are selling a promise/lie of one).

Kira, 11:24 he's using jargon to throw people off the scent. Most of what he's mentioning is literally the basic architecture any MMO would need to operate on ANY level. Even something as small as 'A Tale in the Desert'. What MMO can operate without a gateway and databases? These are only line items if you're building everything from scratch. And as you know, NO ONE would do that because it's prohibitively expensive (in $$ and man hours). Not even Triple-A level developers do that. But I guess if you've got $8+ million worth of OPM, it's a good idea. 🙄
11:24 As a developer, I can tell you that's a bunch of bullshit buzzwords that make some sense but will never work. They probably have some proof of concept, but the whole "hundred of thousands of players in a single world" is just the SpatialOS promise but by a small team of incompetents
I just want to point out, I feel like all of this pre alpha footage looks more like 3 or 4 different games, I know different iterations can happen but in some the difference is night and day
As his mouth moves, all I can see is that his eyes show desperation, no ambiguity, and pleading, yet NO remorse, NO ambition, and NO promise. This guy here standing, talking "BIG", whilst his eyes Talk "please do not sue me, I beg you" EDIT: "code is not exciting to look at", or whatever he said.. Shows 9 lines of code.. As a developer myself, this is offensive. I like to look at code, and this guy shows 9 blurred lines of it?! ANOTHER EDIT: I do not know about "game development", but what he basically says, applies to ALL enterprise applications. This is not something NEW that they're doing. He describes the natural lifecycle of a (any) Software.

Oh my Christmas came early! More Elyria videos lol Looks like he just reading a script in front of him while trying to show as little emotion as possible.
My translation of 22:30 is they are going to take out some of the promised content/features (deliverables) so they can get the product out sooner, by focusing on developing the most important aspects of the game for backers. "What's the least amount of work we can do to present something that won't get me sued?" Lol
6:00 I agree. Also when For Honor pulled the card where they had no time to make new characters so they now just recycle already characters that are in game . Warden in story -> Warmonger or whatever the name is , Lawbringer -> Now he isn't lawbringer in the story but someone else. Even when their moveset in the story same as the previous characters. I know this is an MMO channel but wanted to leave it here.
I'm aware of that, it's pretty clear. What I mean is that there's tangibly zero information there. Which people? What do people care about? What does that entail? Which things are moving? It's just saying words that may or may not mean something. It's called being ambiguous, so you can't be quoted in court. He is saying words that could be construed as meaning something to backers, while also not saying anything of actual commitment or fact.
"You can't judge a book by it's cover" is a severely misapropriated phrase that should remain true for books only. When it comes to a person's outer exterior, it's usually what's on display, that reflects the inner life. This "Caspian" puts off strong car dealership salesman vibes. What a shame so many people fall for these types. Speaking of cliches here's a good one; If it's too good to be true there's a more than decent chance that it is.

I enjoy your content for what it's worth. If I were not broke I'd be your supporter but everything in due time I suppose :D keep up your good work mate.
I'm a Solo developer, so the scale of CoE is obviously not comparable to what i make, and since i'm pretty sure they work with an in-house engine , i can't tell how it works, or what programming language it uses. However, i do everything myself, so i have at least some knowledge in every aspect of game development and the process of making a game. Now, what Caspian is saying about "showing off code being boring", is true to some extent, but it really depends on what kind of code. Showing off how combat works or how trading is done in-game requires code, and seems fun to show off, while back-end engine code or how the game is saving data is not. To me though, it seems like the scope of the development and especially prioritizing has been way off, resulting in a game with a huge amount of different mechanics that are 30-60% done, instead of having 1/3 or even 1/4 of that amount and all of them being 95% done... So now they are at a point where they dumped (x employees * 4 years) hours into this, yet they have nothing to show us, since nothing is near completion and it's just one big unfeasible mess. If this is the case, then he probably wouldn't even be able to estimate how far into development they are, if you asked him.
hey kiratv, you said at the end that maybe people dont like your videos or they dont know you. i never even heard of COE, and now im following it all because of the trainwreck it has become. the video subject might just be very specific. definitly like your videos! keep it up.
I hope he agrees to the interview! It will probably blow your channel right through the roof on views and if he has the right answers (and can deliver on what comes from the interview), it could save his project. Anyway, good video!
when they started to use spatial OS for MMO engine, i was really excited as i did a lot of research about Improable's - Spatial OS. but then they dropped Spatial OS because they dropped support for Javascript, but if you go over the dev videos and people who talked to the devs - they did programming in c# the soul bound engine was written in c# - so was there map editor generated in c# he is from microsoft and has knowledge of Asp/.net with c#, so not sure why they decided to use javascript for Spatial OS
He said from the get go he was going to continue to work on the game along with a small number of people who volunteered to help him in their off time, since everyone had to seek alternate employment. Yes, he did say he was closing the studio, however, he did not say the project was dead. Two completely different things. His business is not classified as an essential business, so he had to close it. To be honest though... the funding did take a huge blow with the community not spending as much as they usually did. That wasn't a secret, people were saying it in discord that they weren't investing any more money into the project unless they saw something playable and some said they just wanted to see some real progress not necessarily something playable. There were multiple issues with the entire scenario, however, my point is that he NEVER said the project was dead. I'm just keeping the faith that it will be released in its full glory as promised. So what I won't do is contribute to that accomplishment being derailed. I want the game to come out especially since most games that continue to be released are utter trash. It's like the MMO industry is just rinse and repeat at this point. We need CoE to release so we have something worth while to play long term. I don't know about you and your follower base, but I'm not really impressed with the MMOs which are out right now. It's like none of these triple A studios have an innovative, original bone in their bodies. No one is introducing any new, next gen or next level mechanics. It's the same mechanics over and over. CoE was going to, and I still believe can, squash that completely and force the other studios to step their game up! IJS... I know everyone is extremely disappointed and some other choice emotions, but people make mistakes and he is trying to correct his. I don't think he should be ridiculed for making a few bad choices. They weren't done under the guise of malicious intent. I've seen malicious intent and have known some pretty malicious, despicable people. He is NOT one of them. I've never seen Caspian tell a flat out lie. What I have witnessed is him jumping the gun with giving dates trying to appease certain members of the community and then that date had to change. I believe he should have just stuck to his guns and not provided any dates. When something was ready for the community, just post it or announce a live chat scheduled within the hour. Sure they would have been mad they didn't get a date, but getting some really good news would have been so much better. I think I've commented enough, its gotten pretty long. LOL! I just wanted to provide a bit of my outlook on the situation. Happy New Year to you and your community!

Hello I’m like 2 years late I know but I have some context on what hes saying ! I like to develop games as a hobby. When he says he added collision it immediately raises red flags as collision is basically what prevents you from falling through the floor or walking through stuff, this applies to both 2D (It might not apply to 2D games in some situations) and 3D games: if you don’t have collision on you’ll fall through the map, so why did they just add this?
18:43 I can do this "Test map generation visualization" in less than 5 minutes. All it takes is world machine and some basic shapes. And I am not even a game developer... :D
"We're going to move deliverables to get what you care about in your hands sooner." That statement does make sense. What he says he's doing is what most kickstarter MMOs should be doing. Focus on releasing a limited amount of enjoyable content ASAP as opposed to finishing the entire game before people get to test anything. Based on some failed projects in the past I personally won't invest in a project until I've played something that shows some evidence of quality. It's the most sensible path for any such title to take. That being said, moving forward with CoE isn't a sensible path to take. It was a niche project with a small team and small community of devoted followers. Now it has no team, and a miniscule community with any level of faith left. This game will never amount to anything. Glad I got my package for free during the Searing Plague event.
Yup. And on top releasing early content allows the community to make suggestion and do the bug hunting for you. Deep Rock Galactic is an exemple of a game that worked like this and ended up awesome from it (and still does even after release, as players can freely playtest new updates)

Lol @ the pandemic affecting games studios in any major way! I work at a big UK studio and it basically went like this...'Oh I suppose we're going to get locked down soon, better take your kit home and plug it in there instead'. It was probably a few days of downtime until everyone was logged on the vpn, doing meetings on teams and working as normal. Only issue I had was to upgrade the internet to get a decent upload speed for checking stuff in.
I'm pretty late here but I just wanted to add my 2 cents. Im not a business expert or anything but I work for an indie studio and our CEO updates us on how much money we have in the bank and how much runway we'd have if our current title stopped making money. There is no way this guy was blindsided by having to go bankrupt. Makes no sense otherwise
"...specifically, my team is me, I need a pay check while avoiding lawsuits." -Caspian, maybe? Man, I am so glad I got someone to buy me out when I first smelled rat.
This is why I always laugh when I see people pitch an MMO on Kickstarter. MMOs need to be finished before you fund them, because otherwise you literally spend millions of dollars just funding various prototypes. I work in the commercial MMORPG space and I worked on an MMO once that was cancelled after 3 years of development because the investor said things weren't moving fast enough. We were told by one of the managers that they had spent 30 million dollars on it. I'd say the game was near beta, like very late alpha stages and they just shuttered it. People paid for a group of people to learn about MMOs and to plan their approach, which is a shit thing for the donators.
@@georgeblair3894 Do you think Pantheon is doing bad? I stopped following it closely a few months ago, because they suddenly started to shed the "Unity Asset Store" content they were using. I personally feel that when doing an indie MMORPG you need to take whatever affordable help you can get. Doing everything from scratch for the sake of doing it just seems wasteful. I asked a contractor that does custom work for my game to give me his price on a 70 dollar pack I bought from the Unity Asset Store, and he said for that said quality and quantity it would cost around 4k-5k USD. I can't justify spending money like that just to be able to say, "this wasn't purchased stock assets". They do seem to be having a rough go from the last vlog I saw where they were talking about pursuing more financing. The money they have already raised should have scored them a solid late alpha release client.

Starting the stream off right...Love it haha
(thats twice the assets to do)
WHY is a huge part of "their" graphic-assets stuff that can be found in online 3D stores ?

22:00 I think the sentence means that he has understood that he has to finish one feature at a time. A few years ago he claimed to follow a rope-bridge development model in which he worked on all subsystems simultaneously instead of actually delivering features.
Absolutely love Kira tearing into hypocrites and scammers. Let us know when you get Knighted please
You are easily impressed :)
The best part is that the "fundraisers" consisted selling in-game items for systems that probably weren't even going to bein the game even if it was released. I remember on discord someone paid 200 dollars for "royal bees". the more people spent, the more shitty kits for obscure mechanics they would get.
Also remember when they went off selling parcels of land, up to 'kingdom sized' for ludicrous prices, just a couple weeks before going bankrupt
@@samarkand1585 yeah... They said their company is doing great after they got around 1 million dollars on the last few sales, they were hireing people and sold stuff up to 2 or 3 days before the project was suddenly shut down without any warning. When buying titles/land wasn t possible anymore in the end- I think they said that it was thanks to technical issues they where working on, rofl....
When the people who got scamed like that asked for refunds they/Xsolla refused - xsolla said the game is still under active development. Without any employees, with 1 guy !!!!! now both are getting hit by lawsuits
Imagine spending thousands of dollars on titles/land (they were freaking expensive. a king package was for example 10.000 dollars...), getting infos about technical issues and the game beeing shut down 2-3 days after u bought it, without beeing able to even experience any of it since it doesn t exist yet- thats just f**ked up
"deliverables" is just a programmer word for "milestones" basically.
Caspian doesn't quite have the silver tongue that Todd Howard has. You have a lot to learn, my child.
Todd has 16 times the knowledge. He just works!
What's the bet there are people who are still going to give them money after this.
Oh of course, I mean this is the world we live in. There are some people that just truly don't know don't care.
So many gullable people
Watching this guy describe how great his game is reminds me of running into that guy at the bar who wants to tell you what a bad ass he is and all the things he can do to you. Cool.
18:01 I can also download World-Machine and generate some terrain, can I get 8M$?

19:07 I'm sorry, how is there no facepalm about "the dangerous canus rabbit"?
I really doubt they need technology to host hundreds of thousands of players on a single server. Perhaps dozens.
yeah 100,000 players in one single instance would be insane. I cant imagine the type of server required for that, you would literally have to have several servers actually and somehow combine them all into a single vm. (im pretty sure its possible but cost prohibitive af)

My translation of 22:30 is they are going to take out some of the promised content/features (deliverables) so they can get the product out sooner, by focusing on developing the most important aspects of the game for backers.
"What's the least amount of work we can do to present something that won't get me sued?" Lol
If he had done this from the beginning, then he might actually have created a game.

22:02 I interpreted that as meaning they'll remove a lot of features so they can deliver something. It's common in the industry to do this.

I don't know why, but i really like these kinds of videos :)
He’s using development buzzwords. Micro service architecture is used everywhere.
If this is the case, then he probably wouldn't even be able to estimate how far into development they are, if you asked him.
luckily never cared about chronicles of elyria as a game but the shitstorm surrounding this project is top shelf entertainment 👌👌 mwahhh *chef's kiss*

He had a hard time reading those cue cards. You could actually SEE him doing it. LOL
Hi, we stole you money, but now we want more.
The pre-rendered scenes looked great. The actual gameplay scenes looked like crap.
Cough Pantheon Cough
@@AaronVictoria Somebody , wiser than me, pointed out on one of their recent "updates" that what they were showing could be created in a matter of DAYS. Yet the "devs" were gushing like they had just discovered the recipe for ice.
@@georgeblair3894 LMAO... Damn I was drinking some fruit juice while reading that and early blow it all into my keyboard. I need to learn to stop everything before reading comments. I literally got all the way to recipe and suddenly saw ice and nearly collapsed hahaha. That's some comparison, though. But yea, being a coder I always see people overselling something minor to their viewers that aren't keen on what was done. I'm often sitting here like, "Wow this is like a few days of full-time coding and they're saying they've been in development for months."
I actually requested that a client cancel a contract I was working for him last year because I caught him lying to his community about work I did and I didn't feel right about it. I coded the vehicle networking for his project, and he was telling people it had been in development for 2-3 months and I had only worked on it for about 4 and a half days. I can't stand people doing that kind of thing.
@@AaronVictoria Unscrupulous lawyers will do the same thing.
Many of my friends backed this game during the start saying this was gonna be the next thing. And called me insane to back ashes of creation because they had a scope which was never gonna be reached.
I'm just gonna sip on their tears while i play Alpha 1 this weekend lol.
Oh yeah! Rub it in their faces. Take screenshots , stream it, post videos. Lol!
"A comprehensive finances review, in this hemisphere, at this time of year, centred entirely in your game studio!?"
"Yes."
"May we see it?"
"No."
they think people had long enough to let things slip down the memory hole and are back to their old tricks
thx for the update. don't waste your time with an interview mate, that ship has fuckin sailed
