  • This is GEN Schwartkopf's speech to the Corps of Cadets at West Point. This was a memorable speech and visit, and great for any cadet today to watch and learn from.

I am priviledged to have lived at the right time in history to witness what this magnificent military genius and equally courageous soldier did for our nation when called upon. I was sorry to hear of his passing. I have known some wonderful military people. They are a rock hard lot. Thank God for them.

General Schwarzkopf is a great man and a great general who practiced what he preached, a man of great character. I wish we had more men like him in Congress and all the other government offices.

He was just like any other general, he ordered us into enemy territory to fight then ordered us to be on our own if captured, Yeah that's war so don't make him any better than most.

I don't think that this speech is for the United States Military Academy cadets alone. It is a great inspiration to anyone, who would be the leader throughout the world. Simply delivered and without fanfare, it is one of the best speeches on leadership I have ever heard.. Even though General Schwarzkopf is no longer with us today, his leadership in the Desert Storm will never be forgotten.

SALUTE General. He may be gone, but what he was talking of and teaching is still with us in the US military, and, contrary to a couple of comments, these graduates who are now in command position have done exceptionally well, despite the vast cuts and limitations of the politicos. Well done sir. Thanx for posting all these.

As a young man, doing my last year at West Point, it was very inspirational to watch Gen. Schwartzkopf deliver this speech in front of the audience. Now, already as a retiree, I find it the same as inspirational as I have 30yrs ago. Gen. Schwartzkopf was a great leader, a great soldier, but above all, a human, with a heart for his men&women, and we would have followed him straight to hell. Rest in peace, warrior!

In Iraq it wasn't a 100 hour war. My unit a ground unit was ordered behind enemy lines 1/1/2 months before the ground war was announced. We were ordered to attack iraqi positions then left to defend ourself it we got caught behind enemy lines. Don't believe everything you here son.

Clint, this speech is good for all Americans hear, internalize and live by. Character and competence are important even outside of the military. General Schwarzkopf used military examples to emphasize his point based on his audience and his experience. However, this speech could have easily been relevant to any civilian workforce or even junior high school students. I'm honored to have served indirectly for the General in the Middle East during Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Desert Calm. He's absolutely right. There are leaders just as great as him in the armed forces today and anticipate that there will be in the future. The same is true of civilians who might never serve in the armed forces. Those of us who are older, have the responsibility to encourage all to continue developing competence and character throughout our lifetime, and pass on lessons learned to future generations. Without it, humanity destroys itself.

John E. (full name left out for privacy sake), one of my classmates (91), asked Schwarzkopf about the beer. More than one person had asked if he would run for office after retirement (wish he would have) and he kept getting more ticked off because he wanted nothing to do with politics. John got the mic and said, "Sir, Cadet John E... I don't care if you run for office, I just want to know if I can buy you a beer after this." Whole place erupted! I will never forget it.

I was sitting near the stage and remember ducking me head and not believing he asked it. Like wow! I'm like is this guy gonna be kicked out just prior to Graduation? The balls that John E had. What a memorable moment and an amazing speech. Competence and Character....
