Fuji XT5 and XH2 Autofocus Problems Examined (Continuous Eye/Face)

  • Well, I'm back to testing out the autofocus of the X-H2 and X-T5. What I found for continuous autofocus using wide/tracking and face/eye auto doesn't speak well for Fuji's newest autofocus system.

@@JerredZ 8 months owner of X-H2 here, same Autofocusing issues on my side as well, even after the most resent firmware update. If it is something moving, 65% if not all 75% of photos are all either out of focus or object parts are badly blurred. Disappointed to the point of returning the camera and add more just for Sony, although it is way way more expensive where I live. Before X-H2 I was having X-E1 (yeah, very old one) and even then I had exactly the same issues with regular focusing functionality, where camera would say an object is in the focus, but in fact it was not. We appreciate your honest feedback. There is no sense of sugar coating it because nothing will get done if that is all that fuji hears. I had better expectations too for the new fuji's. We have been shooting with them long enough to know what setting to use and I am in the same boat as you on this. Ill be completely honest my original Nikon Z6 has better eye autofocus. It does not hunt and jump around, and when shooting a group it stays on one person and lets you use the joystick to toggle between subjects. It just does not focus as good in low light. I was shooting Canadian geese this afternoon with the xh-2 and 100-400 and with the bird subject detection on. In camera it was telling me it was tracking but when I looked at the shots the hit rate was about 50-60 percent. I honestly had better hit rate with my xt-2 using a large zone box. There is a lot of things I like about fuji but for the price, and going into 2023 🤦

I’m pretty sure this is my last video on the subject - I need to move on and remember why I love photography. I can go back and “make it work” and hope to see improvements for the autofocus in the future, right? Fuji still has some magic… but man… this was a blow for me. I work at a camera store (did I tell you that?) - and there is always a “but” with Fuji. “They have great cameras… they look cool… they take great pictures… BUT… you’ll get better autofocus from the other cameras.” That hurts!

I had the Nikon Z6 and Z7 II and the Nikon eye autofocus is much better then Fujifilm cameras (same observation as you). If Fujifilm can fix this one plague that continues to hold them back, then I would without hesitation state they make the best cameras on the market. Until then, the retro looks and film simulations are the only reason I still like Fujifilm cameras.

I just switched from Sony to Fuji, downgrading from the A7IV to the X-T5 to go lighter and smaller. I've been in the Sony eco system since 2016. I was playing with the camera yesterday just sitting on the couch testing the AF on my wife about 5 feet away from me and I was stunned how often AF was picking up the lamp a few feet away from her. I guess I was super spoiled with Sony which was usually really good at figuring out it was her and not the lamp I was aiming at. (Yes eye AF was turned on) I have as of yet to take the camera out to do some serious shooting (It's just a hobby for me) but this one experience has me worried. I had heard Fuji was behind in AF but I wasn't exactly expecting this with the new AF....hopefully it's something they can tweak with a firmware update.

For me I did not want a 40 mp sensor when I couldn’t change the Raw size like Nikon allow in the z7. I was also suspicious about the AF improvements because all I saw was reviewers looking through the viewfinder and assuming it was all in focus - pre production camera and all that. I've been having the same problem with my XT-3 for years and missed some excellent personal shots because of it. On paid jobs I have it in the back of my mind to take extra photos in case the AF messed up so I come away with something in focus. And because of this experience, and because of the lack of VG, I held off on "upgrading" to the XT5. Also thinking of moving back to Nikon. And even considering a Sony A74 because of the smaller body and lenses in that ecosystem. But I hear they are still having problems with colours and colour casting. It would be interesting to see your AF settings, as the tracking option can make a difference. Fuji is not like sony at all, where you set the AF and it just works. It needs a fair bit of setting up. Have to say, I tend to use AF-S for portrait shoots, unless the model is moving of course. However the focus priority set to "Focus" may help as the camera will only take a shot if it thinks it has focus. I think the default setting is set to release, so the shutter fires regardless. The Face Eye detect still can see faces on subjects that are clearly not, but its not as bad as previous cameras. I was out yesterday shooting street photography and was quite impressed by how well the AF picked up eyes from distance.
Next time i'm out, i'll try AF-C and see if my hit rate drops.

Sony has the best AF in the business. End of story. Having used an X-T3 for several years doing shoots with fast moving subjects, there are ways to improve the autofocus to the point where it isn’t a problem. Is it perfect? No. But it also hasn’t left me missing many shots. Back button focusing has been the single most useful function for Fuji focusing.
As far as this video goes, if you have a Sony that works for these situations, why bother trying to make the Fuji do the same?

I do not know about the issue with video but i know the issue with out of focus face and eyes in photos in XH2. There is an issue with "Focus Priority = RELEASE" which causes out of focus face and eyes even though the camera shows green box on face and eyes (false feedback) . FUJI ships cameras with default Focus Priority = RELEASE. The intent of this mode is to still be able take the pics in cases when the focus would not achieved. But the way it is working right now, it is never trying to focusing in first place and always taking blurry face and eyes which is a defect.Fuji needs to fix this. Change to "Focus Priority = FOCUS" and you will get tack sharp pics. Please test this and confirm. A high reach channel likes yours can help get FUJI's attention if you can confirm this Focus Priority issue. I have taken 3K pics with XH2 in studio portraits session and did not find a single tack sharp pics of face and eyes. i read about this setting and changed to Focus Priority and results are as good as full frame sharpness. However, it is still a defect with Release Priority which never focuses.

I'm frustrated with my X-H2 because it slightly misses focus even on static scenes that should be obvious shot at f5.6. What makes things worse is that it confirms focus before taking the shots, it looks in focus on the camera screen but when you open the raws on the computer they have missed focus shots randomly. I can't believe I'm second guessing focus on basic moments not even requiring tracking on a flagship mirrorless model in 2022. @@JerredZ In my experience using the X-T3's older Fujifilm autofocus system, using "release priority" in AF-C more-or-less doubles my missed shots compared to "focus priority." The purpose of the setting is to tell the camera whether you care more about perfect focus or perfect timing, so if you're judging focus performance, you should at least try using focus priority. The green box doesn't really have the same meaning in AF-C that it does in AF-S; it's not a focus lock so much as a subject lock indicator. AF-C is constantly re-judging and re-focusing and moving the lens elements. If the green box represented focus lock like you suggest it would be a flickering green box, never solid.

I'm having a horrible experience using the X-H2 with the 150-600mm, with AF-C, wide tracking, bird (object) selected. The camera and lens does an excellent job - when it's behaving, but then in veers off into ridiculousness.
I'm trying to get a shot of a yellow warbler and the bird is making it easy for me. He is sitting in an uncluttered space, perfectly placed. I have the lens zoomed out to 150 to find the bird in the viewfinder then zoom to 600 to get the shot. There he is in all of his yellow glory at 600mm, then suddenly he's a yellow smear as the lens goes completely out of focus. I never did get a shot of that bird. In other cases I'm trying to get easy shots of marsh birds and the lens/camera just simply refuses to focus. I point the lens at a tree line and it focuses, then a drop down to aim at the bird and the thing goes completely out of focus again.
Other times the camera would put the focusing box on the bird as it should, but the bird is out of focus. In fact in all of these cases where the bird was somewhat in focus to begin with, the focusing box was on the bird and recognized it as such when the lens went completely out of focus.
This is not my only experience with bad AF performance using wide tracking/object tracking, just the most recent one. Don't get me started on tracking when shooting video.
I don't need a 100% hit rate, but 90% would be nice versus the less than 50% I'm getting now.

Hello! And thanks for creating this video! Informative content. I got the X-H2 and X-T5 a few days back and tested it on my dogs for stills (animal eye af is important for me). And honestly speaking I’m just comparing it to my Sonys which I use for my pro work at this point, AF wise Sony is reliable but it does have its misses which I think largely due to human error or bad lighting. Both the Sony and Fujifilms works very well (in good light) just that it is more challenging for the fujis in less than ideal lighting.
Ultimately, I got the Fuji for my own personal social media page works (film sims and easier file management. Not to mention lightweight setup for cafe / travel hopping on the go) while the Sony is used for pro work.
At the end of it I get the results I want from both systems as they are tools we need to learn it’s pros and cons to master them. No tools are perfect nor any brands for that matter.
Pick the best system in that gives you more fun and tbh Fuji is more fun for me😅.
Lastly, I wanna ask if you made any changes to the tracking sensitivity for varied results. Would like your opinion on them if it changes the result of your tests thus far.

I switched from Canon to Fuji some years ago for wedding work because of the weight. Loved the handling but immediately ran into autofocus problems that were so bad that I converted to manual focussing, no joke. Bought a bunch of XT2s and an X-H1 and since then get along with manual, using autofocus only for overhead wide angle crowd shots and the like. I need to overshoot a lot, but at least I can blame myself for it.
I am still waiting for getting back to autofocus, especially for video work, and am on the fence of either investing into some newer Fuji cameras, going back to Canon or going the Sony route. Your video has now confirmed to me that Fuji is still not up to prime time, sadly enough.

I had Fuji X-E2, X-T1, X-T2, X-T3, X-T4, X-H1, X-PRO2 and X-PRO3 and always had autofocus issues with these cameras! Standing me in the same place photographing a static object and taking several distance measures with camera’s autofocus (AF-S, smallest point, no pre-AF, I had set my camera’s Shutter Release/Focus Priority to Focus priority for BOTH AF-S and AF-C), I have different distances measured. Sometimes when taking a photo of a landscape or of a far building, in one measure the camera says that it is 3 meters far and next time it says it is in the infinite.
Analysing these cameras’ AF behaver and because the camera measures the distance with the diaphragm closed to the selected f-stop, AF processor does not know the difference between what is in focus and what seems to be in focus because of depth of field. These errors are more frequent with wide angle lenses and closed diaphragms (great depth of field) than with tele lenses and open diaphragms (narrow or inexistent depth of field). With the latter the photos are practically 100 per cent sharp focused.
Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus… All these cameras focus with the diaphragm wide opened. I do not understand why Fuji do it with it closed!
Now I have a X-T5 and it seems that this camera became more intelligent and I noticed an improvement in AF, the measures have more consistency but I always have to check the displayed distance in the scale.
You must be thinking why I keep using Fuji cameras. Well, Fuji cameras are the kind of cameras that we like use and feel in the hands, they are cameras that give us pleasure to photograph to in spite of their faults.

Video is spot on. Just gave the XH2s a workout at the Philadelphia
Dog show. Animal eye tracking using wide tracking and AF-C the focus box was not reliable at all. The eye detect was very spotty as well. I had to concentrate on skill rather than rely on the improved tech. 60-70 percent hit rate at best. Expected way better performance in the real world.
And of course I didn’t see anyone using a Fuji. The 50-140 and 100-400 definitely held its own though. When the images were in focus they looked amazing.

In general real-world use for portraits it performed better than the X-H2 and X-T5... but that's with an asterisk because there were a few strange situations where the focus completely lost it's mind and refused to see a face and/or act like I would expect at all. HOWEVER - I need to shoot with it more, and a few random hiccups here and there are common on most cameras - they just can't be the norm!

I recently did a shoot for a client and my X-T4 with the 56mm 1.2 (first version) had serious problems getting a face in focus -> it was broad daylight and the guy was not moving. I am getting very frustrated with Fuji AF (I own an X-T2, X-T3 and X-T4). It is hit or miss. I do a lot of events and also own some old Canon gear (5ds). I have had situations in which the 5ds performed much better than my Fuji gear. I have recently caught myself thinking of switching back to Canon. I am tired of checking and rechecking pictures for sharpness. I recently shot a concert with a very important moment I had to get and Fuji almost let me down. This is a no go for a "professional" system.
Until now I have put up with all the Fuji shortcomings: X-Trans problems in lightroom, bigger files than Canon, NIkon considering the MP, AF problems, slower performance with Fuji files and so on but the AF problems and their persistence really put me off. If I spend another 2000 Euro or more on a camera, I want great autofocus -> so I will probably pick up an Canon R6 and not an X-T5 or X-H2(s).

(Note that the comment below might also apply to the X-H2. The reason I say "might" is that I do not own an X-H2 and have no way to check to see if these settings are possible, or if they would improve the auto-focusing on the X-H2). The comment I mentioned in the above paragraph is provided immediately below:

My X-T4 does this. Literally can’t be ‘trusted’. It sounds spoiled but many other cameras are at the point of aim, hold BBF & majority of eyes in focus. Almost effortless. I picked up this X-T4 to be a casual/travel body but I think I’m letting it go.. grabbing an X-Pro2 for casual as I’ll have far lower AF expectations & grabbing R6ii when I need glossy wet eyeballs & amazing high ISO performance.

I Love my X-T5, it's a fabulous camera, however, I agree with the eye and animal tracking. Not good enough for sure.
I photograph equine sports for my living, and was excited for the animal tracking.
It misses too many times and slows the camera down no end.
So, I'm back to the zone AF and it's noticeably better than the XT-4 for that.
Also the high ISO noise is definitely worse on the X-T5
Do I want to change systems, no... I love using the Fujifilms, however, I definitely have to work around it's weaknesses.

For the moment I've stopped using the subject detection for face/eye focus on my XH2 because it's just unreliable, even with the current 3.01 firmware. When I just use tracking and set the focus area to the subject's face and hold the shutter button half depressed it works a lot better. The tracking speed also needs to be set high.

I've been a Sony shooter for the last four years. Previously I had been a Canon shooter. I love the Fuji colors and was excited when the X-H2 was announced. Candidly, it's a huge disappointment. The 40 MP sensor is muddy and noisy. The autofocus and tracking, especially for birds, are terrible. I'm getting a higher keeper rate (90%+) with the Sony A7R IV. The Sony only shoots up to 10 FPS, but 90% are clear, and it finds the animal, especially in trees. I'm lucky to get a keeper rate of around 65% for the Fuji. As noted, trying to capture birds in trees is useless. I was using the new Fuji 150-600 with the X-H2. This combination should produce stellar results. There's a lot of hype around these new sensors, don't believe the hype.

One thing I would say is most other you tubers just show that green square on the eye and call it a day. As you found it, that doesn't mean you nailed the shot. So thanks for bringing this up. Bobby - I should have talked about that more, but I removed a big segment where I show (quickly) thousands of other photos in tests I did with various settings. I just shot a race yesterday and shot some people STANDING STILL watering down the dirt track and I had continuous autofocus and high speed burst set - and the little green box was locked on the guys eye the entire time- and the entire series is out of focus. Very bright sunlight- he was not moving, I was not moving- and in a couple shots the leaves in the back are in focus. Super frustrating- In the viewfinder the shots looked on point. The resulting photos were not. Obviously Sony has figured this issue out- but in a way this is an issue that is also related to an electronic viewfinder. If we were looking through the actual lens like in a DSLR we would see exactly what’s in focus and what is not and at least be able to make a correction. What’s kind of frustrating is I’ve used an XH1 for sports and got much more consistent results in an older camera. I’m confused.

Hi, the Fujis are thinking differntly regarding continous AF. I've also switch from Sony to Fuji. On the Fuji's it's best to configure and use Zone AF for tracking AF.

  • @SummersSnaps
    @SummersSnaps ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yep, I am not surprised at all by this result. Fuji have pulled the wool over everyone's eyes by making the tracking LOOK good but actually ENGAGING the shutter/AF and seeing what the captures are like is a completely different thing entirely. It's easy to throw some green boxes up all over the back of the camera screen, doesn't mean shit.
Even with the XT4, I have noted it can be SLOW to present a green box over the face/eye (you take the shot not seeing a green box etc), but on review get a pleasant surprise that the eye was found and in focus. It feels like this is what they have actually boosted, the real time feedback of the green box appearing, but not necessarily ACTUALLY improving AF all that much. I think I would get very similar keeper rate to you using my XT4 for the same scenarios. Day one of owning a Fuji XT4, I set to AF.C, Face/Eye Detection, Wide Tracking and had my kid run up and down the front lawn towards me, my results echo yours here.
Basically the AF is not sticking enough still, it's like there is no 'Hold' status, as soon as it loses it goes hunting rather than chilling on the focal plane or something (until it reacquires).
The only question I have left is if the XH2S is any better, because a stacked sensor might actually be assisting a lot more than on the other two 40mp sensors. I have a hunch it might be and the XH2S is now the real only replacement I would entertain over the XT4.
Ah... I have been spoilt tho, coming from Pentax Fuji AF still feels like a dream lol, enough for me to get most client work done with reasonable results.
The devil is in the details tho, I want more than just Face/Eye Detection, I want to be able to restrict it to certain areas of the frame. No point in using this feature at all for things like a person getting out of their chair at an awards ceremony or the bride walking down the aisle if the face detected and locked on is not the person you want. Face Select is frustratingly annoying, and buggy when it can be turned on along side Face/Eye Detection, its honestly all a mess at camp Fuji 😆

Hey, Eddy! You know… I’m with you. It’s a strange thing - the in-camera experience really made me a believer until I reviewed the photos. The X-H2s does appear to do MUCH better - sometimes remarkably so - but honestly, I need to spend more time with the X-H2s now. In a recent portrait shoot I did with it, using face/eye tracking, I had the couple walk toward me with the sun setting behind them in a forest-like setting. That’s kind of a tough one for a camera since there is so much distance to gauge (they went from pretty far away to right close to the camera) - so much background stuff going on, AND the sun shining right into the lens. THe X-H2s did an amazing job. However - in the same session, there were some very simple scenes where it locked focus on something other than the couple’s eye (a branch in the background for instance). I had to stop autofocus, recompose completely, and then it found the subject. SO - a little inconsistent maybe, but overall it seems to be much better. Again - I’m going to be using it more now that I’m sending the X-T5 back!

I just finished a very quick test in the back yard, tracking my wife as she roamed about the back patio at a normal walking pace. I was shooting with the X-H2S with the Fuji 30 mm Macro at f/2.8, 1/500th, ISO 1600 (crummy light) with wide tracking and eye detect. Out of 107 photos taken at 7 fps she was clearly in focus in all of them. So it certainly seems the X-H2s is faring far better at eye tracking. No shot accidentally grabbed onto the background but the background was also not terribly busy. I will test again in the next few days to see if these strong results hold up when against a busy background. I will also test my other lenses- a Tamron 17-70 and Fuji 70-300 and Fuji 23 1.4 wr and let you know what I find. I am quite surprised there may be such a large difference in performance between the X-H2/-X-T5 and X-H2S. Most reviews have minimized the focus performance differences.

I just posted this on another YT's channel where he covered the same AF problems: I did a side by side comparison of the XT5 and the XT3 with the 33mm 1.4 lens in BIC camera in Tokyo not long ago. I was traveling in Japan with my XT-3 and was interested in upgrading to the XT-5 so I went over to BIC. I had the exact same findings in which the XT5 gave false positives. I photographed customers walking towards the display stand with wide area tracking (Fuji's version of the 3D tracking) and focus priority in AF-C mode. The hit rate for the XT5 was only about 15% better (roughly 60% in focus) than my XT-3 even though it showed a false positive AF. My main cameras the Canon R5 would have been at 95% hit rate in the same scenario. I hope this is something Fujifilm can fix in firmware, otherwise it's not really work the upgrade.

Oh, Mark. You are right on. This IS happening, no matter what others are saying (and there are a lot of people who are still not believing that this is an issue). Your percentages are totally right - I shot yesterday at my son's Dojo with the X-H2 and it just missed so many shots... as soon as I switch to my Sony A7iv... EVERY shot is in focus. 98% probably, while my X-H2 was, at best, 70%. At one point it totally thought someone in the back of the room's ear was an eye, even when I "locked" focus on my son's face.... I can understand if it happens SOMETIMES - all systems will have some issues here and there... but it happens too often on the Fuji.

Such a frustrating situation. It's really strange that on the LCD it appears to have a lock yet the images are not in focus. When I think about that it makes me wonder if the lens isn't capable of getting where it need to be quickly enough. Using AF-wide and leaving it on the camera's default setting of tracking sensitivity 2 and speed sensitivity to 0 is not going to be great for photos of your son moving unpredictably with a busy background. Putting the mode to AF-Zone over wide and bumping the tracking to 4 and speed to 2 should give better results but still not perfect.
