Hey Omar! As a wedding photographer - I followed your setting to set priority - Focus and wow - this is a game changer. My shots now are pretty much 99% in focus now even on a hectic day. THANK YOU so much for sharing this!!
As a Fujifilm user and fanboy I think as consumers we need to push Fujifilm to improve their autofocus. It’s always been an issue even if you nail down the settings.
Didn't Fuji fanbase already for years pushed for better AF? They kinda did address it. Just like how so many cried for articulating LCD. Interestingly they said it was not possible, but added it to X-T4. Then many complained to bring back the tilt lcd. Hence we now have both options. Someday AF will be perfect. Maybe.
Yup. The crazy thing is that some influencers are finally stating that it is an Achilles heel. While Sony and others are just killing it. The justification before when fuji's cameras didn't focus was - "... well the competition is about the same!". Not anymore, the mirrorless wars are over and focus is not an issue anymore for those that are pulling away. On the other hand, Fuji still has wonderful color science and creates the best jpegs - perhaps that is why we still love Fuji, but for how long? And don't get me started with video. :/
Just for fun I shoot Basketball w/ an X-T3 and the old 35mm f1.4. Hitrate wasn't outstanding but I got the keepers I wanted and the players where happy about the pictures. They didn't know how many pictures I took, what lens I used or settings. In the end they reviewed there fotos on an cellphone ... and there where happy, that someone took pictures you don't get with your phone. Smile on there face is the goal ... not pixel-peeping 😀 I guess that covers the emotional part
Hey Omar, I saw Jerred Z’s video about the XT5’s false positive focus. It’s when you are looking thru the EVF or LCD and that little box tracking the eye or face of the subject turns green and so you shoot a number of photos only to find out that a good number of those shots are out of focus or soft. Three says ago, I had a business portrait session and I used my new XT5 paired with the 16-80 f4 lens. For reference, I am an experienced Fujifilm user coming from the XT3 and I am well versed in portraits with strobes or speedlights. So I did have my focus priority on and AF+MF off and my settings were right enough to minimize any blur. I was hand-holding the cam at 1/500 f5.6 ISO 200 AF-C Face/Eye AF with IS in Continuous mode. I would acquire eye/face focus as indicated by the green box, but a surprising amount of my shots were out of focus or soft. The danger here is the false positive focus. I can understand if the box wouldn’t turn green at all meaning it just can’t get focus, but to turn green even if it hasn’t acquired focus is alarming especially if you are on the job for really important events, then coming back with a bunch of unusable photos. I hope Fujifilm can fix this soon. Btw, I had my Sony a7r3A as backup for the session and as soon I noticed the problem with the XT5, I switched to my Sony and it almost never missed the focus with 95% or higher hit rate with the same settings as my XT5.
@@ogonzilla Yeah, definitely. Will be testing it with my XF 33mm f1.4 this weekend, see if I can get better results. Also, another XT5 user messaged me that he keeps getting eyelashes in focus instead of the iris which also happened to me and that muddy look also keeps popping out. At first glance in reviewing my photos using the lcd, it looks sharp, but once you punch in, it feels like you have watery eyes and you can’t understand if the photo is soft or you just need to blink several times to clear your vision.
@@ulyssessison9474 Fingers crossed that Fujifilm corrects this very soon and it is no longer an issue. I'm so tired of hearing about AF issues with Fuji, but I understand that Fuji doesn't have the same kind of research/test budget as Sony/Canon. They need to pour more resources into fixing the AF once and for all.
Let’s face it Omar, if you want the best focus system you need to shot with Sony or Canon for mid range cameras. Both Nikon and Fuji are way behind with auto focus.
I just watched a TH-cam video complaining about the XT five auto exposure. I just ordered one and it makes me nervous thinking I made a mistake. Your video shows that it does work and it’s probably just people not understanding the settings. Thank you for your video, and I appreciate any advice you might have.
I'm done with Fuji after ten years. I went back to Nikon and AF accuracy in the Nikons are far better and more consistent in my experience with less menu tweaks to deal with.
I missed your whimsical videos. I have subscribed to your channel but have not seen anything in a very long time. So, I was glad to see you back and as always”on point “ reviews. Please continue with great info, I am a Fuji/Sony guy but older cameras as $ is very tight snd just can’t keep up to date anymore. Thus your perspective is always appreciated. Great job as always had been. Thanks for that.
Found this helpful since I did treat myself to the X-T5 and have yet to set it up...thank you. {Also - as a parent myself whose child somehow grew up to be 30 in flash - watching the progression of your two kids age as I have been a subscriber of your channel is somehow bittersweet and familiar... enjoy them as long as you can...it goes so, so fast...too fast!}
Great video, Omar. You are 100% on point here regarding the AF in Fujifilm. I was super happy with the XH2 and XH2s focusing after tweaking the settings. Regarding the image quality, it would be great to see the XT5 vs the XT4 or even the XH2 vs the XH2s. Maybe the 40mp sensor is too much for APSC? Who knows.
I've done similar test with my XT4 (shortly after owning it), I used the Viltrox 56 @ 1.4 and was getting pretty similar results to what you have here. I think the biggest improvement for the XT5 is the 'on screen feedback', that you are getting better notified that it sees a person/face/eye. I noted with the XT4 for example that it would actually at times have a shot in focus on the eye but at the time I was too quick and didn't give it quite enough time to display/show the box around the face/eye. You think to yourself that you prolly were too trigger happy for it, but actually on playback it says face was detected.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the AF on XT5. Will be taking mine out for a run in next few days. Amazed how your daughter is growing and got a laugh at her “paid work”. 😆👏
I really appreciate your honest reviews Omar! Thank you! I thought about upgrading to the XT-5, but I love my Fujifilm XT-20 not for its autofocus but for it’s size and beautiful colors. It’s like driving a old Porsche.
FUJI took several steps back with this generation. Noisy sensor, still unreliable autofocus tracking, bad implementation of IBIS, and now they're so large they don't always have the advantage APSC should have over Full Frame which is size.
After seeing several reviews of the X-H2 and X-T5, I am of the opinion that the autofocusing system can detect the eyes and the images look good on the screen, but when the images are viewed on a computer they can look a little bit out of focus.
More and more videos are showing up on TH-cam demonstrating that the accuracy of the X-T5s autofocus is not that good. The problem is that it for example shows that the eye of a person is in focus on screen, but when reviewing the actual pictures there's another area in focus (i.e. the hair). I tested my X-T5 with the aforementioned 35mm f/2 and I was pleasantly surprised with the autofocus. I just took it around for a walk and photographed ducks and seagulls in a pond. The birds were quite far away, but the autofocus picked them up right away. I didn't review the pictures on accuracy as the birds were really far away. The X-T5 had however difficulties with the autofocus of the 80mm macrolens, but autofocus on a macrolens is an exceptional case so I don't think it's representative of the capabilities of the X-T5s autofocus. Nonetheless I'm quite curious about the findings of other people and if this is due to the new 40 megapixel sensor used in the X-T5. If that's the case I would assume it would be picked up earlier as the X-H2 is already out for quite a while.
My guess is that the mushy photos are slight focus misses, not IQ problems from 800 iso. I tested my XT3 in broad daylight on a static subject and decided that, if I have enough light, iso 6400 is tolerable and anything 3200 or less is basically great. The other reviews on XT5 suggest to me that it is noisier, but not crappy in terms of ISO performance. Available light and lens used has had a big impact on the overall sharpness and quality of my photos with XT3. I get plenty of “usable” photos in various conditions on any lens but to be blown away I need perfect focus plus good light, and with Fuji the focus hit rate basically sucks in my experience. I hardly ever burst and still expect near misses and misses to occur pretty damn frequently. It could be my own movement/subject movement, shutter speed, whatever, but Sony figured it out. I’m not defending Fuji, I love my Fuji. Also, Fuji sucks.
I hear way too many problems about the noise in the new generation of fuji cameras. In some cases like using 240p on XH2S it is legitimately far worse than XT4.
@@anonymousl5150 I know exactly which videos you might be referring too. If your point is that these new cameras seem like a disappointment, and you wanted one, I guess all I can say is "try before you buy". I enjoy many TH-camrs and their opinions, but at the end of the day its about YOU and what YOU are trying to accomplish with a camera. If you shoot in crappy light, AF suffers, image quality suffers, and so on. Garbage in, garbage out. You can spend plenty on a full frame and still be miserable. Anyway I hope Omar and others do a lot more testing and help us figure this crap out.
I tend to agree - the mushy effect is because things are not properly in focus. At 800 ISO noise is not an issue on these cameras, in fact you can push them way up and the results still are acceptable as long as everything is properly in focus. I (tried to) shoot a lot of indoor sport with my X-T4 and it has always been a disaster. In low light the AF just can't keep up, and the result are misfocused shots that look like crap. With my A7 III, it is a walk in the park. And that was my drive to just stop investing in Fuji until they figure things out. I mean, these days with 3rd party lenses on Sony you can get a wonderful kit at about the same price as Fuji.
I’ve had the X H2s for about a month and the af is fantastic. The eye tracking af is great and imo about 95% of where Canon and Sony are at. Yes it misses focus every now and then but it’s rare. If you want 100 or near 100% af hits go Sony. I’m good with 95% lol. I sold my iv and went with the X H2s.
The XH2S just got a firmware update that improves AF significantly. I'd love to see you do a follow-up video once this firmware update gets applied the X-T5.
3:13 I was baffled when I heard this, as I use AF+MF & Focus Priority on all of my Fooj bodies. I had to recheck the manuals, and neither the X-T4, nor the X-Pro3 seem to have this restriction. This looks like a setting you need to pay attention to on an X-T5, so better always check the manual for the specific model you use. Big shoutout to Omer, I respect your work, especially this kind of details you won’t find easily elsewhere.
I took my X-T5 out for a walk with my dog today. It definitely missed the eye with subject tracking on at f/1.2, but I did have AF+MF on. I'll have to try without the setting on. I'm thinking about hoping that any blips with the AF will be resolved with a firmware update.
I used these exact settings last week following an animated discussion here on YT. With my 33f1.4 I was kind of meh about autofocus...so! I tested it at Santa-Claus parade with my little son ,I couldn't recognize my X-T3 . Also on Af-C custom setting on 2 . On a 215 shots I only missed 6.
What I would really like to see you do is to try out the multi plixel high res mode and see if you can actually create a photo with higher details, no artifacts etc. I am struggling with getting any keepers using that mode,
A great in depth review, and some awesome setting tips. One cool thing I have found with the X-T5 is that in the custom settings you can modify more than just spec settings. I now have my custom mode 6 set to have AF+MF off for when I want to use AFC and face/eye detect. I have my right d-pad set to select custom mode. So if I am dealing with action or moving subjects, select C6, and put focus switch to C. So nice we can control settings like this. C7 is bird mode, etc. ;)
I like having AF+MF (along with focus check on) on to allow me to verify and fine tune focus when doing detailed shots. I like “macro” shooting and it is helpful there….granted I could go full manual too, but generally I prefer AF.
Saw people commenting how Fuji is now on par to Sony A1 or Canon R5 with eye AF. As a Fuji owner since X-T1 I was super super excited! Went out to test the X-H2s at the camera store but left with mix feelings. Eye AF tracking was better than anything Fuji had prior, very usable now, but wanted more. Definitely not A1/R5 level. The viewfinder eye AF box felt choppy and tends to lag/trail the subject it tracks. Works well for static subjects but subpar if they are moving or you pan. Sony/Canon, their AF box in the EVF was way more sticky and smooth. Don't know if Fuji is just showing less AF frames to save battery or what, but the user experience was underwhelming. Felt like early gen eye AF or beta. Fuji gave us enough to make things work with enough tinkering with right setting/environment, but it isn't hands off brain dead reliable easy like canon/sony. Not many people compare AF tests like you do yet. Think "The Slanted Lens" did something similar with X-H2/A74/R6 of a model walking towards camera. Fuji would miss several shots, but Sony nails all of them. Be cool if you setup all the camera side-by-side on tripods and show how fluid the AF tracks in the viewfinder too. Gets exact comparison for the same subject motion. End of the day Fuji AF while not the best is good enough for most casual people to get by. Don't think they ever get market leading bragging rights on anything tech wise. Everything they do sorta orient/push toward value in a niche market they dominate. Just don't have the budget to take on bigger players.
Yes DP review had some questions along the lines of accuracy with focusing the right part of the face! Getting your eyelashes sharp instead of the eyes.
Hi Omar, from my experience that muddy look is from the x trans sensor in certain types of dull lighting scenarios. Great real world assessment of the camera by the way.
I used that same 35mm on my glidecam work with my XT3. It worked really good even without the recent updates. It lost focus a few times but it wasn't that bad.
Your daughter is so adorable, i discovered your channel a week ago and been binge watching your vids the last few nights. I am shocked how fast kids grow just through some of your videos from 2 years ago!! BTW my z6ii came in the mail today and i cannot be more happy with it, thank you so much for helping me pick my dream camera
This is one of the better reviews I've read on Fuji AF. One thing. I was playing with a Z6II at my dealer, and it seemed to pick up and track faces at a pretty good distance. So I will still hang on The Fence about the X-T5 or a possible system switch, which will be the first since the Canon Betrayal.
Interesting analysis and autofocus test. I've been reading other reports of muddy images from the new 40MP sensor which I find more that a little concerning. Could it be the 40MP sensor and lens combos are mismatched? In addition, it seems to me that Canon and Sony are clearly the industry leaders in autofocus performance and overall responsiveness but you simply can't beat the Nikon Z6 II files for image quality. It's becoming more important than ever to choose the right camera and lens for the job. Thanks for the great content and information Omar.
The Fuji system is not a professional sports system and at best id say you would probably never even see one at a high school or elementary school soccer game. Even soccer moms and dads are all shooting old Nikon, Sony or Canon DSLRs or mirrorless. The Fuji system is a fanboy street photography system and at best maybe light birding or landscape and portrait system. Even most novices these days have all gone FF with either Sony, Nikon or Canon. The Fuji system is a fanboy coffee shop camera 🙂
I really want the XT5 autofocus to work reliably. I tested the XH2s and XT5. Captured some of the sharpest shots I ever taken but also far more misses / soft and dull shots. I was surprised by the XT5 camera feel, analogue setup isn’t something I thought about until I had one in my hand. I love it and now just want Fuji to get it right. The price is not the driving appeal. The range of Fuji glass is great in most aspects, so the system specifications ticks all boxes except Auto face and eye / autofocus. I experienced false focus lock and that doesn’t inspire trust in human or the other object modes either. Fuji this should be priority No 1
I do bird photography with xt5. Been having issues with either lack of detail or images that have a terrible soft mush focus to them. I've gone through a long list of reasons why it's happening, even sent my lens back to fuji, they said it's fine. Camera shop I bout it from was out of ideas and resorted to telling me they're sick of hearing about my camera they sold me. Went to another camera shop and they guy figure it was an aggressive Noise setting. He setting the Noise reduction setting to negative 4. Said the Noise reduction gets aggressive at higher ISO. Suggested anything over 400 iso. I went out and was shooting Falcons and images seem better. Hope this helps some else cause I was ready to smash the xt5.
Man, that Sony laughter🤣😂 I'm really glad I don't need superior AF for what I shoot, so I l can solely focus on the joy of making an image that I want. And even if I ever do need superior AF, I have a Sony A7III to fall back onto.
I totally agree you should not have to pay $2500 for a camera I have to worry about the auto focus and switch modes every time you want to use it for different situations that’s why Sony or canon is the way to go still in my opinion if you want auto focus unless you like playing around With those things
fortunately most Fuji users are here for the character of the camera and photos more than perfection. We prefer the size, tactile buttons, Fuji colors, and the best out of camera jpgs on the market. Not to mention the huge following the film simulations have. Sure, I would love to have better auto focus, but overall I would still take the Fuji any day of the week.I sold my z6 for an x-t4 (now have the x-t5) and I will never go back to those 'lifeless' cameras.
Yes indeed why do we have to apologize for Fuji missing the mark and coming in third or fourth place! 😳 I myself feel that Fuji has failed again in fixing auto focus. I don’t see a reason to upgrade.
@@djstuc Wild life isn’t street photography! I realize I am in kind of a unique area of photography. I’ve been doing this for the last six years and it’s been quite frustrating working with Fuji cameras. People are incredibly unpredictable, as well as the scenes that pop up with people in them. With wildlife I think you have a pretty good idea of what you’re photographing. I’ve learned to use the limit focus on lenses with my XT4, which helps, but doesn’t guarantee the shot. You don’t know how many shots I’ve lost because I couldn’t get the focus. I’m talking about I’m shooting three or four shots and still can’t get any of them in focus? It is help buying the faster, focusing lenses with the linear motors in them, but I still had to use the limit focus on some of them, if not all. I’ve tried every scenario you can think of, and I just sent my custom setting on one, because all the rest fail to often and even the number one position fails, even with pre-focus in having the camera turned on. If I was just taking pictures of nature or buildings, it wouldn’t be a problem. But even DP review said there’s a lot of room for improvement with the XT5. 🖖
Other reviewers are having issues continuous autofocus with it showing in focus on the screen but the actual image isn’t in focus. Did you see any of this ?
I seem to get that with my old X-T2 even when it's a static subject. I get an audible confirmation that the subject is in focus but when I check the images I find one every now and again it has not quite grabbed focus. It's very frustrating sometimes, hence my interest in the X-T5. However, this test doesn't exactly fill me with confidence !
great video, plain and honest 😊👍 I use FUJI [X-T3] cause of: • its beautiful colors • top handling / small size • great knobs for ISO/SS/f • low prices for 2nd hand gear If do take pics of people, landscapes and nature in my leisure ... If I'd need fast AF, I'd have SONY A7IV ... but I don't 😊 I love my beautiful incomplete FUJIFILM for hobby 😊
I’m not expecting my new XH2s to be as good as a Sony or Canon for continuous AF, and neither is the Nikon, Panasonic, or Leica etc. But as my previous camera was the XH1, my bar is quite low.
Hey Omar about the noise levels of Fuji you mentioned at the end , I saw you used with Fuji DR 200 and I believe this gives just a tight noisier shadows!
This is the kind of AF testing every camera review should have, bravo! For the mushy IQ, it looks to me like the fuji images are underexposed compared to Sony/Nikon. Doesn't fuji auto exposure generally do this to keep IOS #'s down?
One of the selling points for the X-T3 was the eye detect auto-focus - which is great. Had it just worked flawlessly. I can take 10 images, where 2 are out of focus - same settings/light/model. Which is sub par.
Another great video, thank you. I took my smart new X-T5 out for a twilight ramble with the 23mm f2 lens. I had a few concerns about image quality, rather like yours. I'll be interested to hear more from you to see if this is an issue or just getting used to the camera. Thanks again!
I’ve been rocking my ole XT1 for my fun photography needs. (For my more serious work I use FF Canon cameras.) Omar, is your fav. everyday Fujifilm lens the 35 f2? I’m a big fan of the 50 focal length on any camera. 👍🏻
Thank you and your daughter for doing these comparisons. Your daughter makes a lovely subject. The three side by side shots at about 6:54 show the beauty of the Z6ii. How much different was the infocus percentage from the Sony? I know what you see in the view finder appears to not be as pin pointed, but how are the actual results.
Appreciate you Omar! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I have noticed that my photos from my x-pro3 can get that super soft or muddy look when the iso begins to creep up, even at like 2000 to 2500, which is a bummer because I love shooting that camera. My Nikons seem to have a totally different quality level of image in most situations when comparing. I know we shouldn't necessarily do that because that is also subjective, but, to me, it is something I have noticed that I found pretty surprising. Also, I know you are busy, but I am definitely jonesing for that next Moe and O show!
SO I've seen some possible hope of improvement over the horizon for Fuji AF quality. Fujifilm's Toronto office recently listed job ads looking for 5 new senior software engineers. Fingers crossed they're hired to work on camera tech
That's why I treat my Fujifilm as a digital Leica, a manual focus camera. And yes, files from the Fujifilm can be muddy at times. Still, I still enjoy shooting with it.
Yeah the slanted lens channel also had similar “muddy” aka out of focus shots. Fujifilm is starting to feel like Panasonic when it comes to focus. It can’t keep up with the bigger companies. 😢
@@thisisbenji90 never, they dont work reliably since implementing phase detect. Only their old contrast detect AF systems in e.g. XT1 and their GFX series work. Its simple to prove when repeatedly focusing on one and the same still spot/object and displaying the focus distance in the EVF. You will see how the camera measures different distances all the time, which of course ends up in a series of differently focused images. I demonstrated and explained this with clear examples in dpreview forum and Fuji fanboys just dont want to accept it😂
I see a lot of people noticing that slightly blur or muddy look when compared to lower resolution full frames, and I wonder if something went wrong with that 40mp sensor. Maybe try adjusting the sharpness settings as well, it definitely looks suspicious.
Hi Omar (and other viewers). How did the issue with the 'blurry muddy' images evolve? I'm having the same issue with my X-H2, and would really solve this. Suggestions like NR-4 don't help. Shutter speed is high enough. Multiple lenses... It's not that the focus is missed, and it's not motion blur. The images are just not crisp, and especially the background is smudgy while it should be still sharp (compared it with an XT-3 with the same lens and with a Nikon Z7II with a comparable lens). So I would love to hear if you (or any of your viewers) was able to find a cause and solution. Thanks.
05:11 I'm really glad you mentioned it there. I so sad I'm saying this because I just love Fujifilm cameras. Even though I love Fujifilm, I mean so much so that I had sold all the other systems(yes even Sony A7m3) and am currently only using T3&100V, Fuji always feels lacking this 2 percent to get "THERE" if you know what I mean. Everytime they release a new model the "It's getting better" tag comes along but it seems that they have always been "getting better to the 90 something percent of other brands and I'm afraid they will be like this for... some time. I really hope that the day come not far in the future when Fujifilm IS there not GETTING there again.
So what about the mudiness? Any tests you made and want to share? I experienced this when I got my X-T5 2 days ago. My X-T2 just looks better on ISO. I am wondering for what am I paying 1700 bucksies.
Omar- Things are heating up here. We need your test results real bad to put this issue to rest. I love Fuji. But I have griped enough about the AF on XT5.
Hi Omar, love your videos. Quick question; for shooting moving toddlers running or playing, do you think the XT5 will suffice, or should i get the xh2s? I'm shooting with the new 23mm. Also, I'd rather not have to sort thousands of pictures! So the most I would shoot is just a few frames a second, in mechanical. Your musings would be greatly appreciated.
When you compared the XT-5 ISO 800 images to the Nikon Z6ii ISO 800 images, it looked to me like there was more noise in the Fuji images than there was in the Nikon images. However, the Fuji shots looked like they were in focus. Of course, due to the larger sensor, and less megapixels of the Nikon, we would expect that to be the case. If you compared the XH2S at 800 ISO to the Nikon Z6ii at 800 ISO, I would think that the Fuji files would be a bit cleaner than the XT5. Great video, BTW! Thanks!
@@ogonzilla Not defending Fuji here, but I'm pretty sure 800 ISO on Fuji is not 800 on Nikon, they use different standards (despite the ISO name) and amplifier settings.
I got the images looking alot sharper after turning down the NR. Now I'm finding I get better photos using a slower shutter speed then I'm use to. Usually I'll do birds at 2000ss, I'm finding 1000 shutter speed ( on 150mm-600mm) looks sharp. Not sure if it's the dynamic range or stabilization or combination of other factors. Guess a bird in flight should still be at 2000ss . Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this.
I don't think your conclusions can be validated without also including the various AF-C Custom Settings... at least the 5 presets available for moving subjects.
I don't understand why everyone use wide tracking instead of the little tracking box. I've got good results with it and think that you definitely have to check this option. And as always: i love your authentic stile of videos,
I keep wondering the same thing lol! When everyone was hammering on Nikon about their AF being bad and watching them use the camera in a way that it has to pick the subject, I think it is a little silly to rely on your camera to do that. Using the single point and continuous seems to working 98% of the the time and that works for me
@@montazownianr1 I don't mean for it to sound like I don't like Fuji, I do. I think the images have a pretty cool look to them, BUT for what I want out of an image, I find it disappointing at times. I shoot a lot of low light and it just isn't on the same level. Which is totally understandable. If I had more money, I would have like 8 cameras, but alas, I am a poor bargin hunter lol
@@ogonzilla no, you can use the little tracking box with face/eye af on. If there is a face or eye near the tracking box it will follow the person's eye. I've got very good results with this method. Have a try😉
A songbird approaches at least about 10 x faster as your daughter's sprint (no offence, it's just like so 😊) and it's much smaller. Did you test that also 😉😊?
PS: Sony nailed AF by introducing 4D AF system in - about 2014 to 2016 or so with the a5100 and the a6000 afai can remember, dates and models are a guess. The 4D is meant literally as 4th dimension (the spacetime), the system makes a *prediction in time and space*, where the subject will be next shutter click and adjusts focus prior to next click . For that it is almost perfectly accurate. Only Sony utilises that technology.
I like seeing your kids grow up through your videos! Great video as always. I have 20 years invested in Nikon lenses but did not go with the Z6ii because of the autofocus issues. So, just purchased the XH2s and plan to do extensive set up first. Your video helps me identify what to focus on (pardon the pun).
@@montazownianr1 it's a great camera, truly. Actually, the autofocus was only half the reason. The main reason is the heavier weight. I have a hand injury and cannot carry heavy bodies and lenses anymore. Otherwise, I would have held onto it and dealt with it until Nikon releases the next iteration.
I’m just a few years behind. Was looking at an xt30ii since I wanted a compact camera and hated the ergonomics of the Xs10. Is it a no brainer to just get a used xt3 for the same price as a new xt30ii? Didn’t seem terribly bigger. Granted would love weather sealing and a 3 way tilt in the smaller form. Guess. The question is used camera vs new since I can’t seem to find any new xt3’s or open boxes around. Thanks all.

@@franciscodangelo9654 Don't think FUJI can improve ISO pref much since they rely on SONY to for the sensor
The only TH-camr who called out the XT5 images being muddy. Thank you! I thought i was going blind. I don't see 2 grand worth of detail
The most important part of this video, for me, was when you said the word “muddy.”
I look forward to your further analysis. 👍👍
They'll be happier if you didn't use an awful. Fujifilm
Wow. Good to know. Thanks for passing that along. More tests?
Wouldn't it be best to use single af with face/eye detect off? It would give you more accurate results than eye/face af
Which Nikon model are you using now?
@@engineer4862 I have acquired over many years many Nikons. I use them all depending on different applications.
Found this helpful since I did treat myself to the X-T5 and have yet to set it up...thank you. {Also - as a parent myself whose child somehow grew up to be 30 in flash - watching the progression of your two kids age as I have been a subscriber of your channel is somehow bittersweet and familiar... enjoy them as long as you can...it goes so, so fast...too fast!}
Yea thanks. Crazy big but every era is special. Except 30. They’re the worst. ;)
Who knows.
but 7:13 if you compare the images you see differences at frames 1.920 pixels wide : ridiculous!
There are phones with much smaller sensor that focus much better that what we can see on TH-cam about xh2/xt5
@@djstuc narcissist troll.
The AF-MF setting is huge. I'm new to Fuji and never would have known that.
We definitely need a video about Fuji muddiness!
C7 is bird mode, etc. ;)
So am I right in thinking that it’s best to just leave AF/MF off completely. Even in single shot mode? Does it make any difference?
For me, not an action photographer, this is a far bigger concern for me. Wondering if this is a noise correction issue? ISO issue?

This is one of the better reviews I've read on Fuji AF. One thing. I was playing with a Z6II at my dealer, and it seemed to pick up and track faces at a pretty good distance. So I will still hang on The Fence about the X-T5 or a possible system switch, which will be the first since the Canon Betrayal.
Fuji AF has always excelled in capturing "emotionally sharp" images

Thanks. You are one of a very few people i would put my trust in.
Please perform a focus test between the Z6-2 and sony 4 or XT-4 in low light, at home

Wild life isn’t street photography!
I wonder if Fuji's AF is still tracking as it takes the photo, resulting in "focus-motor" blur. 🤔
Kind of losing interest in Fujifilm. Seems like I made the correct choice of opting for a Sony A6100 over the Fuji XE-4.
great video, plain and honest 😊👍
I use FUJI [X-T3] cause of:
• its beautiful colors
• top handling / small size
• great knobs for ISO/SS/f
• low prices for 2nd hand gear
If do take pics of people, landscapes and nature in my leisure ... If I'd need fast AF, I'd have SONY A7IV ... but I don't 😊
I love my beautiful incomplete FUJIFILM for hobby 😊
Sony a6000 like autofocus in 2022..great job Fuji👏🏼
That's what I thought.
Great! I have x-s10 but I wil certainly buy X-T5 and this video is very helpful
I'm curious as well! Surprised.

Omar, is your fav. everyday Fujifilm lens the 35 f2? I’m a big fan of the 50 focal length on any camera. 👍🏻
Thank you and your daughter for doing these comparisons. Your daughter makes a lovely subject. The three side by side shots at about 6:54 show the beauty of the Z6ii. How much different was the infocus percentage from the Sony? I know what you see in the view finder appears to not be as pin pointed, but how are the actual results.
On the flip side, you’re getting amazing photos of your kids.

I’m not sure Fuji has ever been on par with the bigger companies in terms of AF.
AF+MF should be turned off? 😮 I need to check this later in my X100Noir. 😊

I experienced this when I got my X-T5 2 days ago.
My X-T2 just looks better on ISO.

Omar- Things are heating up here. We need your test results real bad to put this issue to rest. I love Fuji. But I have griped enough about the AF on XT5.
Really appreciate this review 👍 really tempted by Fuji but Sony AF just seems so good.
By the way, I have been suing the xt4 and have been getting great shots. But I feel like 60% ofnmy time is working the camera so much to nail a focus.
A quick question, I cannot find the auto-object tracking. Do we have it?
When you compared the XT-5 ISO 800 images to the Nikon Z6ii ISO 800 images, it looked to me like there was more noise in the Fuji images than there was in the Nikon images. However, the Fuji shots looked like they were in focus. Of course, due to the larger sensor, and less megapixels of the Nikon, we would expect that to be the case. If you compared the XH2S at 800 ISO to the Nikon Z6ii at 800 ISO, I would think that the Fuji files would be a bit cleaner than the XT5. Great video, BTW! Thanks!
In focus, but lookin' terrible! Yikes. Sorry, the Nikon IQ easily beats the XT5, 4, 3, 2....not sure about XT1. ;)

@@ogonzilla Not defending Fuji here, but I'm pretty sure 800 ISO on Fuji is not 800 on Nikon, they use different standards (despite the ISO name) and amplifier settings.
Ugh, this is me now. New fujifilm X-T5 owner with a 50mm f/2 R WR lens, and I'm struggling to get the auto focus right.
Thank you Omar, interesting test !
Hi Omar, thanks for the video. Do you have any recommendations for best xt2 autofocus settings?
Thanks Omar - very useful content, as always.
I don't think your conclusions can be validated without also including the various AF-C Custom Settings... at least the 5 presets available for moving subjects.
DAMN THIS HELPED! THANK U!
I don't understand why everyone use wide tracking instead of the little tracking box. I've got good results with it and think that you definitely have to check this option. And as always: i love your authentic stile of videos,
Are you saying wide tracking with face/eye off?
I keep wondering the same thing lol! When everyone was hammering on Nikon about their AF being bad and watching them use the camera in a way that it has to pick the subject, I think it is a little silly to rely on your camera to do that. Using the single point and continuous seems to working 98% of the the time and that works for me
@@just_A_Hack Yup nikon af is more than good
@@montazownianr1 I don't mean for it to sound like I don't like Fuji, I do.
Have a try😉
That XTrans5 sensor does look quite muddy at ISO800, is it worse than XTrans4 at that ISO level?
Great comparison. Would have been great if the OM1 was also included :)
Is there always tracking when not in focus the white box is always locking onto things without pressing the shutter.
And I'm buying Z6ii because 80-85% of autofocus is enough for me, most of the time Im shooting manual with my poor Canon 70D
I don’t do 'action' photography, would a solution to be to put your preferences into the custom settings?
Who has a better third-party lenses Fuji XT5 or Sony A7iv?
By the way great video and love your channel!!
Thanks all.
That's what keeping me from going to fuji. You know, i love their design language, form factor and specs..but i need a good autofocus..
