    You can resample the pads, you just need to put the sample into the first step of the sequencer, then when you open the resampling menu and press a pad to record it will trigger the playback automatically so the sample will play and then you can record to new pad. I also think we need to see where it goes. It’s firmware 1.0. You make some very valid points but I’m not sure what you were expecting especially on first release. The SP404 MKII wasn’t good until version 3.0. Akai are only now starting to give people more and more. They are never going to undermine their own product the Push 3. It’s obvious why every company out there producing these units doesn’t give us more and more features… what do they sell you next year?. I think it’s a fun and speedy way to cook up beats, if you want all the bells and whistles use the MPC. I’m confident that we’re only just seeing what this thing can do and I own MPCs, SP, Polyend etc etc but there is something really quick and direct about using this in my opinion. I love your channel and content, been following for a good while but I’m not sure this a fair assessment. Just my 2 cents though, interesting to hear your take on it. Keep up the good work 👍

      Nervouscook, i totally agree with you, i really like Marlow, and think he's one of the dopest in the game, and i totally get his frustrations, but I just think sometimes MPC headz, always compare everything to mpc. They have to realize mpc is the top. Everyone else are copy cats, and so far in this situation, as for now, the students are not better than the master. (Maschine is close).

      @@mpchead I truly get what you’re saying but I just don’t think it’s bad. I’m not sure what the price is in Europe but it’s £399 here in the UK. There’s soo much choice out there that it doesn’t matter, if it’s not for you then cool. There’s plenty of other gear that I’ve bought and sold as the workflow doesn’t suit me so personal taste comes into it. I’m not trying to convince you, I just can’t agree with you on this one. Sure I’d love a company to release the perfect sampler with everything we ever wanted but I just don’t think any of these companies are about to do it. I have no loyalty to Ableton i just don’t think they are doing anything different to any other company. Look at the KO II from teenage engineering, in my opinion that was a joke. 64mb of internal storage and no resampling. That’s limited! 😂😂 All good though man! 👍

      @@pdelonn yeah, I’ve said this before but if someone asked me what is the best all round sampler, I’d say buy an MPC every time. This thing is different, I own one because I personally like the workflow and I like the choice. I’ll pick this up one day, the next day maybe the MPC depending on my mood. For the price point, not much else truly portable and built well like this. Only the SP, and it’s soo deep with menu diving and shortcuts that I find it hard to get started some days but I know some people love the SP workflow. It’s all personal. Anyway I’m not here trying to start arguments. I respect Marlow a lot. 👍

    I think Ableton Move is not a sampler. It's not competing with MPCs or 404s. It's a groovebox competing with Circuit Tracks or Yamaha Seqtrak. But thanks for your honest about it. Honestly, I don't understand the crowd that compares everything to an MPC all the time, and acts surprised that everything else is not. It's crazy to me that so many people act like things are either "a game changer" or "a scam". The Move doesn't seem to be for you, and honestly it doesn't seem to be for me either. But the complaints you have for it are clearly complaints from someone who just wants another instrument.
    People who want a quick portable launchpad that instantly goes into Live are going to love the Move. What it can't do makes its workflow more accessible to people who want it and beginners who want an affordable companion for their DAW.
    I don't understand how one can come to the conclusion that limitations are "added in". From the hardware to the interface, limitations are everywhere. Ableton Live can't do some of the things my Elektron Octatrack can do. And I'm not mad at Ableton for that. Designing anything requires focus and compromise. Even in the software world. What is "basic functionality" to you is not for everybody. I almost never chop up samples, it's just not how I work with samples. So everyone is different.
    At any rate, it's fair that you have tastes and can't love everything. It's also useful that people with your approach can hear your story and see that maybe they will be disappointed with the Move too. But at this end of the day, this obsession with "limitations bad" always seems like complaints from someone who doesn't get the benefits they get in return (lower price, more accessible/faster workflow, etc). Just because this blend of compromises is not your thing does not warrant this "brutally honest" posture, which is really just entitled anger towards something that was never for you anyway.
    As for the Move, it seems to me like a peak "first gen" product. I think updates will cover a lot of your complaints. But we won't know until that happens. The Push 3 was also a bit underbaked at launch. It sucks for some early adopters but again, for some it won't be an issue. As you said, maybe it will turn into something you love in the future. Maybe not, and that would be okay too.

      It's the role of youtuber - to share his opinions and experiences. When you watch @mpchead whose content is 99% MPC is now wonder he compares it to MPC, since most his audience will do the same in their heads. To me the video is 100% valid and brings a lot of issues no other video did. And while I don't agree with is opinion on Move, I appreciate the points he raised since those are important to me, too (the way step recording automation works is ridiculous). I think that it all depends on how important Ableton is to ones workflow - the more it is, the more limitation one is able to live with, since it brings a lot of workflow improvements. If someone compares Move to other groveboxes, then it is more limited than many of them in many regards.
      As for your argument about "future updates" - sure, I am also almost certain that it will be better in future. I think that they will lift the 4 track limit as well (to boost sales), but we (and definitely youtubers) should review and inform about the product that it is right now, because we also should spend money on the features that are available right now and not our imagined future perfect product.

    I think the point of Move is to be a hardware sketch pad for starting your Ableton project. That’s why it doesn’t have every feature. If you want a hardware device without limitations, Ableton would advise you to purchase the Push 3. That’s their flagship standalone hardware device. The Move is the little brother to the Push, so it will never have all the features of the Push. That would lead to them cannibalizing their own product.

    • @mpchead
      @mpchead  วันที่ผ่านมา

      I get it but I still feel that it is too limiting. Is just too much. And the resample and step sequencer workflows are just bad imo. Not expecting this to be a push 3, Just a regular sampler.

    • @artephank
      @artephank วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@mpcheadI don’t think you would like the Push workflow either, because a lot of things easy and quick on MPC are not on Push. For instance resample with require setting up audio track, muting or soloing tracks and record real time or flatten the track which destroys the track (so you have to duplicate it first). It’s not a big deal but on MPC you can just bounce to sample. Or flattening pads - so easy on MPC and borderline impossible on Push. If MPC had better ableton integration it would no contest, but for people using Ableton a lot, those devices help.

  • @nervouscooks
    @nervouscooks วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    Also you can overlap samples. I had to go back and check this. So if you record from the line in and chop the sample as it’s playing it seems that it puts it into a choke group automatically so you can turn the choke group off. Maybe that’s what you meant but the samples can overlap if you take them out of the choke group. I guess they assume most of the time you want them in the choke group. I know sometimes we don’t though. One of the biggest things I’d love to see in a hold all pads so you can pitch samples, add attack, turn choke on/off etc to multiple pads at once. 🙂

To me they are all astoundingly amazing machines. They are because I don't feel like they are crippled somehow or intentionally limiting. Just different workflows! I was hoping the Move would be a Dirtywave M8 in functionality. The M8 proves you can pack literally tons into a form factor less than half the size of the Move. It too is not trying to limit the user. Keep it up Marlow Digs I've been a longtime fan.

    My simple thoughts on your points:
    Move has a maximum of 4x16 samples, so a maximum of 64 samples must be able to be played smoothly. If each sample can be layered, the required power multiplies. When resource-hungry instruments like Wavetable are used, the Raspberry Pi quickly starts to sweating a lot. Limitation are needed not just a design choice.
    Fair point about the number of choke groups and the missing bandpass. Your point about parameter automation is also valid. It seems like parameter automation is not designed for chopping up samples.
    Is resample work for you if you make a clip with just that one pad playing?

    • @mpchead
      @mpchead  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I thought of all workarounds for resampling, none to my taste. Is just poor design. I can live without simultaneous play, not a big issue, but I wish the sampler had more functions, it doesn't say much about a company like Ableton which I have always looked at as the company that all companies should to aspire to be.

    I didn't even realize they dropped this as a "sampler", so I'm wicked late to this.
    Seems to me, as you're talking about the automation carrying across each step, that what's happening isn't so much 'automation' as it is 'sample editing' ... and it's been a while since I used my Volca Sample, but it reminds me of how things went recording automation on that... where if you recorded live mode, you'd have to tune a sample back up if you tuned it down for a step.
    ... Although now as I type it, I guess it IS automation, and even though that made for some interesting sounds on the Sample, it's definitely NOT how I'd want my work flow to run...
    What happens if you input all your snare hits and then tune down the first one? Do they all tune down?
    That Sample loading workflow ALSO reminds me of the Volca Sample (a feature which in my opinion calls into question the actual validity in calling it a "Sampler")
    That would be a TOTAL deal breaker for me in 2024
