30:54 this isn't a mistake, it's an intentional feature! After using the closet too often, the oni will fake the sound of leaving to try and get you to come out. If you wait a little while longer the sound should play again and then it's safe to come out
Middle school in Japan actually goes up to 9th grade, so assuming all the characters are 3rd year middle school students, they would be 14-15, not 11-12 lol
Regarding the suggestions that Omori is one of the most influential titles, these people are objectively wrong. Omori is a great game, absolutely! But it benefits from the previous influential titles, rather than setting that influence. It may even be influential later, but we haven't seen that bear fruit one way or the other, and largely takes inspiration from these earlier titles.
Omori is def a game that feels like it took the best from older titles and expanded on it to their fullest. Like a culmination. And it’s not even the only game that has even done what it set out to do, as End Roll is extremely similar to Omori, free, and came out around the same time (likely didn’t inspire Omori, unless it happened later in the dev process). Stuff like Omori, Lisa, etc. are a bit too “new” for them to inspire anything. Esp with how RPG horror is kind of a dying medium when it comes to Western recognition.
Yeah I still think Omori is a bit too new to have inspired any major works yet, although considering the game is going to be 4 years old this year, I think we’re approaching a time where inspired works may start popping up.
The Blockman Oni is kind of an ingenious alternate chaser. As he every few steps he dashes several steps forward, but he cannot turn during that dash so depending on your position you can make him completely miss his dash and go away from you.
Fear and Hunger mention, we stan. (Even if you mention you don't like the games much, hearing the battle sting while I was drawing with the video in the background was the most hype thing for me as a fan of them!) In seriousness, I only recently found out about Ao Oni 2 through Ben Again's coverage, so a bit more of a deep dive into all of it was pretty exciting! I'd never really heard about the previous versions, either! I really forgot all of that was in 2011, it feels so much older than that.
The franchise is seriously a rabbit hole, coming from someone who has done several deep dive investigations myself, including recently since I've currently been in the process of translating every version of the game into Spanish (which is currently on hold since I kinda burnt myself out before I could finish playtesting 6.23). The amount of mysteries I've found surrounding the franchise and some of the obscure merchandise I've seen is pretty damn incredible, like there was an official guide book and even a few pachinko machines made for Ao Oni apparently.

14:30 As someone who loved dicking around in rpgmaker as a teenager I can confirm it was laziness. It's an RPG maker, it has an rpg game menu baked in. It'd have been more effort than it was worth to find a way to remove it or incorporate every single bog standard mechanic the game forces you to input, so the creator just left them default and ignored them instead.
Always was frustrated how much the game implied some lore but never did nothing with them. Would love to know wtf the Ao Oni was, not really have explained but at least some clues. The rooms scratched with blue pen, the cage, wish it had more stuff like that. Ao Oni 2024

I get the feeling that while Fear and Hunger may have existed even if Ao Oni didn't, that hypothetical FaH wouldn't resemble the one we have, if it wouldn't be outright recognizable. FaH came with an entire scientific paper on tension and fear in video games, but the choice to make it in RPGMaker probably wouldn't have stuck. also, the color category covered by the word "ao" includes that indigo shade - it's a cultural thing that asks for a translator's note. :P

Honestly, I don’t know if I’d call Ao Oni the most influential. I’d hand that title to Corpse Party and Yume Nikki. Ib, Witch’s House, and Ao Oni feel like the titles that are super important, but less culturally inspirational.
The lack of lore has always been one of my biggest problem with the game "But it's better to have things unexplained-" Screw that garbage. When you show a whole prison of Onis in a mansion I want to know why there's a prison of Onis and why a mansion is even there.

This game was so scary to kid me back then and it was extremely tense which made me not play it as we didn’t have a computer but I watched a lot of let’s players experience Ao Oni. Good times.
I've said it on a bunch of Ao Oni retrospective vids but PLEASE play Ao Oni R. It's so good and an amazing reimagining of the first game with new characters and graphics (besides the fact there's a hiding spot that works 100% of the time :/)
I'd argue Yume Nikki is still way more influential in the grand scheme. It never had the same exposure boom era that Ao Oni did but while Ao Oni kinda fell into irrelevance, Yumi Nikki is still an influence for devs and artists to this day.

Hey Peter, first off: Ao Oni 2024 ;D This video reminded me a lot about something from my past and I thought it might interest you as well. I'm from Germany, and for whatever reason, RPG Maker also used to be quite the big deal over here in the early 2000s. There's been a number of pretty awesome games (mostly German-exclusive, don't know if any of them have English translations), ranging from actual RPG games to little horrorgames like Ao Oni, or just fun minigames. Unfortunately, almost nobody knows about any of them outside of Germany and even tho I don't think this will happen, I'd find it awesome if you could cover them at some point. The whole thing could be a neat little rabbithole. For example, one of the very first RPG Maker horrorgames I've ever played was a series called "Dreamland". If I remember right, it's about some guy who keeps having nightmares in his sleep and sees tons of zombies, demons and other monsters overrunning the city. For most of the game you just have to go through rooms while avoiding any enemies, it's pretty barebones and the story is simpler than it sounds. Then there was another one called "Die Bücher Luzifers" which means "The books of Lucifer". This one's pretty unique, you have to solve puzzles as usual but what I love here is the combat. When you encounter an enemy, you don't fight them in a traditional RPG turn-based style, but rather you're transported to a small arena where you have to shoot them while avoiding their attacks. This game even has different weapons and an ammo system. It can be compared to Resident Evil, kind of. The game also has pretty awesome boss fights. One other horror game was "3 Monkeys", which is about a guy entering a lab in which scientists experimented with monkeys, turning them into viscious beasts who are murdering anybody that comes their way. As far as I know, the game was never finished and only a demo exists. But it's also a pretty unique experience, because if I remember right, everything's purely visual in this one. Barely any talking, no descriptions of items, no menu. It's also a pretty brutal game but a very short one, unfortunately. There's also a bunch of other good german horror games which I remember playing, but I cannot remember any of their names. But as I said, there weren't just horrorgames, people over here also made tons of regular RPG games, some of which are really popular in Germany. Like the game "Mondschein" (Moonshine) or the Vampire's Dawn series, which actually just got another sequel just a few years ago. Vampire's Dawn 2 is one of my favourite RPG games of all time actually. It's like old Final Fantasy games, but you can do interesting things like drain blood from NPCs, turn them into vampries, build your own little army of vampires, reading people's minds and it even has an entire hub area in form of a castle. If you want, you can just turn every single NPC in the game into a vampire, even tho it might have consequences. But enough about that, I just thought you'd find it interesting. I don't know if RPG Maker was also this big of a deal in other countries.

ahhh ao oni in 2024?!? damn what a breath of fresh air, to be honest. I remember being so fixated on this game and consuming almost every piece of media related to it. that's when I found one of my all time favorite games (well emm can't quite call it a "fan game" its more like an inspired project). Its HetaOni. yes its ao oni but with hetalia characters. AND IT WAS SUCH A BANGER! I wasn't expecting anything fascinating from this game, I just thought its "haha funny purple butt naked demon and anime country boys haha" AND I WAS SHOCKED WHEN THE GAME LITERALLY PUNCHED ME IN THE FACE WITH ITS LORE AND PLOT TWISTS AND SO MANY EMOTIONAL MOMENTS. I WAS FLABBERGASTED TO SAY AT LEAST. like my small monkey brain wasn't ready for something like that. but like as far as I remember the game was never finished. it just stops at a certain point and yeah...nothing new happens. maybe it got updated, who knows. I haven't checked it for a WHILE. but yeah thanks once again, dude! your video helped me to relive some good memories! I really want you to make more of these rpg maker game coverages, there are so many good games and i just know that you would love some of them (well, I mean, I can't say for sure but you get the idea). anyway, great job, man! 💥
I remember watching a japanese let's play of 3.0 or 5.2 when I was young.... That was my only experience with the franchise and I thought this was the only version that existed till now, lol
I wouldn't call this the most influential RPG Maker game of all time. There's quite a ton more; like Yume Nikki that I'd argue has had a more wider reach long-term. Even Corpse Party was popular around the same time, and kickstarted several TH-camrs careers.
It is criminal that this game never came to modern consoles, given it would be a fine horror addition. If Ib can come to modern consoles, I don't see why Ao Oni can't. If it released on physical too, that would be insane but one can only hope!
I guess im the weird one here because i still find the oni as freakily uncanny as I did back in the day. Maybe a little silly in a vacuum but id still hate to see that shit in my bedroom at night 😅 or day for that matter..
Ao oni actually has a timer to escape a chase, in 1.1 you need to be in a chase for 20 seconds, and in the rest of the versions you need to wait 10 seconds
I always like hearing the spooky music from Secret of Mana, I can't remember it's name though but I know it's played in the area where everyone is brainwashed ETA: it's called "Ceremony"
14:16 The most likely reason for this is because removing those UI elements in a lot of older versions of RPG Maker was a huge pain if you weren't familiar with the language. For a lot of developers, it wasn't really worth the time or effort to try and remove it when they could just leave it and not use it.
ads in mobile games are pare in western mobile games most eastern ones don't have them its very rare because it literally pushes people away and tbh bro you could have just played it on a emu like blue stacks or whatever

Hey peter I have two rpg maker suggestions oneshot a more story driven/ puzzle rpg maker game that is worth playing on steam to get the full experience the other being your turn to die death game by majority wich is currently gearing up for it's final part release if you buy it on steam it has a few extra things also give your time to shine a spinoff of the game that let's you explore more of the base games characters
If you want a good horror game, look no further than Deadly Premonition. The Sinners Sandwitch may just be the most frightening thing i have ever seen.

14:17 That is because until XP (which this game was made on) everything in rpg maker was a closed box. The only way to change the menu was to make a new one through eventing. XP was the first to let coding be changed, and most of it was shared so newcomers who did not know coding could still use them (like the small speak boxes above the right characters) And I did not check it, but everything seems like it was evented in the 1.1 version. Same woth 3.0, as shown on the menu on 28:24 And on later points this work on its favor. You think no much coding was changed in 5.2 or 6.23, only simple ones like the message boxes and removing parts of the menu but still mainly using the basics, just in many creative ways. Then 49:23 happens. Also, saw a video analyzing Ao Oni 2, by Ben Again, and it is apparently more of a badly-coded remake of the rpg maker game, only the new location being changed (and worse puzzles thanks in some part to the small graphics). Totally worthy of not being well-known. Also, Ao Oni 2024.
Get hyped Ao Oni fanbase. Ao Oni first game's remake is coming out this month of July on Steam, It seems to be the game made by LiTMUS. Meaning that we'll probably get PC version ports of Ao Oni 2, 3 and X. The remake features a speed mode up to x15 speed, and a randomizer mode which changes the layout of the house completely every run, Ai is the heroine of the randomizer mode. It also appears that the cheat code might still be present after beating the game.
Call of Duty updates are over three thousand teraflops but RPG Maker devs didn't want to include the RTP with the game because it would increase the file size by two kilobytes 🤔

Hey Peter, first off: Ao Oni 2024 ;D
This video reminded me a lot about something from my past and I thought it might interest you as well. I'm from Germany, and for whatever reason, RPG Maker also used to be quite the big deal over here in the early 2000s. There's been a number of pretty awesome games (mostly German-exclusive, don't know if any of them have English translations), ranging from actual RPG games to little horrorgames like Ao Oni, or just fun minigames. Unfortunately, almost nobody knows about any of them outside of Germany and even tho I don't think this will happen, I'd find it awesome if you could cover them at some point. The whole thing could be a neat little rabbithole.
For example, one of the very first RPG Maker horrorgames I've ever played was a series called "Dreamland". If I remember right, it's about some guy who keeps having nightmares in his sleep and sees tons of zombies, demons and other monsters overrunning the city. For most of the game you just have to go through rooms while avoiding any enemies, it's pretty barebones and the story is simpler than it sounds.
Then there was another one called "Die Bücher Luzifers" which means "The books of Lucifer". This one's pretty unique, you have to solve puzzles as usual but what I love here is the combat. When you encounter an enemy, you don't fight them in a traditional RPG turn-based style, but rather you're transported to a small arena where you have to shoot them while avoiding their attacks. This game even has different weapons and an ammo system. It can be compared to Resident Evil, kind of. The game also has pretty awesome boss fights.
One other horror game was "3 Monkeys", which is about a guy entering a lab in which scientists experimented with monkeys, turning them into viscious beasts who are murdering anybody that comes their way. As far as I know, the game was never finished and only a demo exists. But it's also a pretty unique experience, because if I remember right, everything's purely visual in this one. Barely any talking, no descriptions of items, no menu. It's also a pretty brutal game but a very short one, unfortunately.
There's also a bunch of other good german horror games which I remember playing, but I cannot remember any of their names.
But as I said, there weren't just horrorgames, people over here also made tons of regular RPG games, some of which are really popular in Germany. Like the game "Mondschein" (Moonshine) or the Vampire's Dawn series, which actually just got another sequel just a few years ago. Vampire's Dawn 2 is one of my favourite RPG games of all time actually. It's like old Final Fantasy games, but you can do interesting things like drain blood from NPCs, turn them into vampries, build your own little army of vampires, reading people's minds and it even has an entire hub area in form of a castle. If you want, you can just turn every single NPC in the game into a vampire, even tho it might have consequences.
But enough about that, I just thought you'd find it interesting. I don't know if RPG Maker was also this big of a deal in other countries.

ahhh ao oni in 2024?!? damn what a breath of fresh air, to be honest. I remember being so fixated on this game and consuming almost every piece of media related to it. that's when I found one of my all time favorite games (well emm can't quite call it a "fan game" its more like an inspired project). Its HetaOni. yes its ao oni but with hetalia characters. AND IT WAS SUCH A BANGER! I wasn't expecting anything fascinating from this game, I just thought its "haha funny purple butt naked demon and anime country boys haha" AND I WAS SHOCKED WHEN THE GAME LITERALLY PUNCHED ME IN THE FACE WITH ITS LORE AND PLOT TWISTS AND SO MANY EMOTIONAL MOMENTS. I WAS FLABBERGASTED TO SAY AT LEAST. like my small monkey brain wasn't ready for something like that. but like as far as I remember the game was never finished. it just stops at a certain point and yeah...nothing new happens. maybe it got updated, who knows. I haven't checked it for a WHILE.

I wouldn't call this the most influential RPG Maker game of all time.
There's quite a ton more; like Yume Nikki that I'd argue has had a more wider reach long-term. Even Corpse Party was popular around the same time, and kickstarted several TH-camrs careers.
It would be cool to see a corpse party video! That is what got me into rpg maker games.

It is criminal that this game never came to modern consoles, given it would be a fine horror addition. If Ib can come to modern consoles, I don't see why Ao Oni can't. If it released on physical too, that would be insane but one can only hope!
I guess im the weird one here because i still find the oni as freakily uncanny as I did back in the day. Maybe a little silly in a vacuum but id still hate to see that shit in my bedroom at night 😅 or day for that matter..
Ao oni actually has a timer to escape a chase, in 1.1 you need to be in a chase for 20 seconds, and in the rest of the versions you need to wait 10 seconds

14:16 The most likely reason for this is because removing those UI elements in a lot of older versions of RPG Maker was a huge pain if you weren't familiar with the language. For a lot of developers, it wasn't really worth the time or effort to try and remove it when they could just leave it and not use it.

Hey peter I have two rpg maker suggestions oneshot a more story driven/ puzzle rpg maker game that is worth playing on steam to get the full experience the other being your turn to die death game by majority wich is currently gearing up for it's final part release if you buy it on steam it has a few extra things also give your time to shine a spinoff of the game that let's you explore more of the base games characters

The mmo game is very fun you should play it. There are lots of ads but they aren’t in gameplay and usually only optional
14:17 That is because until XP (which this game was made on) everything in rpg maker was a closed box. The only way to change the menu was to make a new one through eventing. XP was the first to let coding be changed, and most of it was shared so newcomers who did not know coding could still use them (like the small speak boxes above the right characters)
And I did not check it, but everything seems like it was evented in the 1.1 version. Same woth 3.0, as shown on the menu on 28:24
And on later points this work on its favor. You think no much coding was changed in 5.2 or 6.23, only simple ones like the message boxes and removing parts of the menu but still mainly using the basics, just in many creative ways. Then 49:23 happens.
Also, saw a video analyzing Ao Oni 2, by Ben Again, and it is apparently more of a badly-coded remake of the rpg maker game, only the new location being changed (and worse puzzles thanks in some part to the small graphics). Totally worthy of not being well-known.

Ao Oni first game's remake is coming out this month of July on Steam, It seems to be the game made by LiTMUS. Meaning that we'll probably get PC version ports of Ao Oni 2, 3 and X.
The remake features a speed mode up to x15 speed, and a randomizer mode which changes the layout of the house completely every run, Ai is the heroine of the randomizer mode. It also appears that the cheat code might still be present after beating the game.
