Enjoyable podcast, Selma. For your Ranunculus podcast I wonder if you - or viewers - might be able to articulate why it is such a successful pattern? It’s a phenomenon that I have so far resisted - a little bit of me is rebelling against making something that so many others have! But what am I missing? What does it have that other patterns don’t?
I watch knitting podcasts because I don’t have a group of knitters that I can join in person, nothing like that in the area where I live, we don’t even have a yarn store here in this area, but that doesn’t deter me from knitting. I have been knitting for close to 60 years now and being retired, I now call my knitting my “employment”.
So thank you to you and to all the knitters who take their time to give us a community “to join” via knitting podcasts.
I too have a huge stash, beyond my life experience as well. I would like to live to be 100 and perhaps I could use up most of my stash 🤔. I can only hope for the long life that I will need to use up all this yarn.
Knitting is my playground : no rules, no deadlines, yust doing what comes into my mind and what I would like to do. Love your quilt ! I really would like an episode about underrated designs and designers. Thank you for 99 wonderful episodes! 🙏 Wishing you a lovely summer.
I love your podcasts. I appreciate your honesty and your love of languages. I grew up with many languages. Thanks for another great chat
I am a fairly new viewer (unfortunately) because I just love your vibe, your creativity and your lovely smile. Your quilt is fantastic, not my colors but nevertheless, magnificent. I hear you talk of your travels and weeks away and wonder how your husband feels about you being away. Do you ever travel with him? What about your children, what do they do while you’re away. I am retired and have a small lys but mostly knit on my own. Podcasts have had a profound affect on me - I so appreciate all you do for me.❤
❤❤❤ Selma, you are a movie maker!
Thank you for sharing your life, talents, experiences and knowledge with us. You're beautiful and your videoes are so lovely and relaxing. ❤️🚣♀️🌲
Gosh that is such high praise!! Thank you 😊😊
I really enjoyed hearing about you. It’s nice to hear someone’s story. Keep up the beautiful knitting and now we will hear of your sewing adventures.
Beautiful episode, Selma. Love your thoughts on knitting podcasts and the community as well and I absolutely share them !
It is funny, but I’ve been watching for so long that you feel like a friend. I wanted to confirm that the mode that was used for the last video was difficult for me to see as I am legally blind. Also reading out the winner’s’ names is helpful too! I think that you could have a future in reading bingo balls in retirement 😂😂. Thank you for all that you have taught me. I would never have been able to learn to knit without TH-camrs like you! I don’t love pattern roundups, but underrated designers, shops, funny knitting stories all could be fun. You are bright, beautiful, disciplined and always professional. 💗💗
What a lovely episode Selma! But then I always do enjoy them. Want to wish you a belated Happy Birthday 🎉 I love the colors you chose for your quilt. And really enjoyed your footage from the lake and Yoda’s cameo when you gave your grandmother’s rug a refresh! Take care.
That quilt is fantastic and the colors are so wonderful. You should be very proud of it. If that were me, I would display it on a quilt rack. Also love your Flex sweater..looks great on you! This was a great podcast..thanks for sharing and for the footage of the lake...so peaceful!
Selma, you are one of my heroines. I truly admire your "strategy" for your crafty life to have a strategy and then let go, let it happen, let things come to "life". I am most sure that you can be very focused too and get things done in tight schedules. And it is sooo good to make a change where possible...My crafts tought me that too, only after i went in a job with creativity i learned that it does not work for me under pressure. Long story short...i changed job and craft with maybe a similar impetus and "yogic" focus and let go attitude...thank you for sharing your thoughts on that, it warmed my heart😊
I just love your podcast - everything about it. Love your makes, your shares, the works. So much resonates. My Chanel jacket would be pink. One day! Looking forward to seeing yours - one day. Thanks for a wonderful podcast. x
I loved your thoughts on podcasting, something happens that draws one another as if we were old friends. Thanks so much for making it happen ❤ A thoroughly enjoyed 99th 💫 Your quilt can’t be prettier, congrats! See you soon, enjoy your summer days 🧶🌷🪁
Your quilt turned out gorgeous! I love the color combo, and your stitches are great. Another option for the strip piecing is to use non-woven non-fusible interfacing. It comes in several thicknesses, and you could definitely sew easily onto the medium weight. Ooooo! Morocco! I can't wait to "go along." My son and fam will be in Oman next year, and we're already making plans. Enjoy your summer projects!
Hi Selma. I’m a quilter and knitter. You can make a string quilt by sewing your strips onto a light weight interfacing. A good tutorial to watch on TH-cam is by Lori Holt called Sew Your Stash series #3 - 8” Scrappy Strings Block Tutorial. I’m sure there are others as well but she is a prolific quilter with lots of great designs and tips. Hope this helps.
Your newest Ranunculus is very lovely! I look forward to an episode all about the Ranunculus as I've wanted to knit one forever, but haven't been a fan of the super over-sized design of it. Yours always seem to fit so nicely, though! Also, I believe you can use interfacing as a foundation for paper-pieced quilt designs as well. It helps to have a foundation to sew the strips on, otherwise the blocks will get skewed and not sew together nicely when you put your rows together. The quilt you showed was so beautiful and should be pretty easy to make.
Thank you Selma , always a great podcast! 😊
Birthday greetings Selma… hope u r enjoying ur new Cast-on. Really excited about u discussing/breaking down all the pitfalls, pros/cons of ur bouquet of Ranunculi. I, for one, never wanted to knit one, but you have inspired me to do so. 😊Looking forward to celebrating the 100th episode. 🎉
I have owned the ranunculus pattern for a long time and have not yet knit it. Looking forward to your ranunculous episode. I am sitting on our patio porch and can hest neighbouring children plsying in their pool. I love the sound of children playing and having a good time. Is that the retired kindergarten teacher talking?
Lovely podcast today! BTW, I love pattern round-ups!
A KAL for underrated designers is a wonderful idea! I’m in ❤ When I see a beautiful pattern by an unknown designer I am often hesitant because I don’t know whether or not the pattern will be a good one. We will learn so much in such a KAL. Enjoy your summer ❤
Glad to hear you like the idea!!
I second that!
Great idea, so many great patterns out there!
I love your pattern round-ups and find them quite inspiring. My list of potential projects gets longer and longer and I wish I was a faster knitter!
Your quilt turned out great. Love it! I do all kinds of needlework and I just let it talk to me on what I want to work on. Also have a large stash of yarn and fabric. I love watching your podcast, seeing what you are working on and seeing the scenery.
🎉🎉🎉Happy belated birthday,,selma🎉
Congrats to winner,s,,,,
Love ur quilt❤❤/
Enjoy ur July,,, ELAINE 🏠🎉🎉
Love the idea of the pattern round up and underrated designer podcast. ❤
consider making a string quilt, you can cut 12 inch muslin squares and sew fabric strips on the diagonal ( starting in the middle and working outward (stitch, fold iron) until the muslin sq is covered. these are later squared up and are wonderfully scrappy , especially when using random widths.
Happy Belated Birthday! I love your videos and your project choices. Your knitting is amazing and has really inspired me to try different projects. Thank. Keep on making beautiful things. ❤
Lovely podcast again, just so beautiful to watch, learn and listen, thank you. Happy Birthday and Happy Canada day. 🇨🇦🎉🎂🧶
This was a wonderful podcast. Happy Birthday 🎂 Congratulations to the winners! The cottage footage was lovely. Your first quilt is beautiful! I love your color choices!! ❤I’m looking forward to your Ranunculus podcast. I want to knit one and it will help me make yarn choices I hope! Take care till then! 🥰🥰
I love your quilt ! Unfortunately it entails 2 things that I despise more than anything sewing and ironing ! I feel the same way about my watercolor painting. Sometimes when I paint , I feel as if I am cheating on my knitting. Luckily for me , I have a dear friend who quilts. I have 2 beautiful quilts that she has made for me. she also made a quilt for each of my 6 Grandchildren.
Beautiful Selma. Thank you for
Thanks so much for sharing your joy about the quilt, it was pure joy irradiating from you, we got a big splash of it 🥳 Buying a pool to wash a rug, that is dedication to care for a heirloom piece. Bravo !
You are so welcome! I was so excited to share about this one 😊
I look forward to following along with your progress on the pink velvet and hearing your thoughts. I have yarn to knit my own sitting in my stash.
For the sting quilt, sew the strips together as wide as you want, say 5 inches, and then cut up with and angle ruler.
Love your podcast!! Enjoyed your camping video shots! You are an excellent photographer!!
Such a beautiful episode: the quilt turned out so nice! Love the WIPS and peaceful vibes of the cottage.
Thank you 😊
Ooh. Maybe a channel jacket kal! I want one also
I like pattern roundups. I always get new ideas.
What a beautiful quilt! You have a wonderful sense of color and design. The best part of all is how much you enjoy the process. Thank you for sharing with us!
It really is!
I love the sweater that you are wearing today. I have never seen that pattern before. The color is lovely too.
Beautiful podcast Selma! Yay for your first quilt 🎉 I would recommend you put a label on the back with your personal info, date made and location; for future generations to know its origin 😊 Take care 💓
Great idea!!
Thank you for another great podcast Selma! I liked the Q and A's. I think your podcast was the first one I watched (quite some years ago!) and I still like it a lot. I like your style and the relaxed way you tell about your knits and also the bits of Canada you are showing us :)
Thank you Karin! It was so nice to meet you! Every time I put some lanolin on my lips I think of you!! 😃
Beautiful knlits Selma. love the cottage😍
Happy 7th podiversary🎉. Always look forward to your work,
Thank you for sharing your lovely pictures and videos and your personal information which of course you did not have to. Lovely to see your makes and so so inspiring for me. Finally finishing the traveler hat by a mowry which was planned for kal over Memorial Day weekend but after thumb episode could not do circular knitting while I watched this so nice podcast.
I just loved this episode Selma, particularly learning a little more about you. I nearly fell off my chair when you said your Dad was Turkish, I wasn't expecting that, I assumed your heritage was completely Scandinavian. Thank you for the gorgeous footage at the end Canada looks so incredibly beautiful. I hope you can manage to intergrate your Grandma's rug into your home, it looks so so beautiful, lots of family provenance there!
Great episode. Truly enjoyed all of content. Can’t wait for your episode about your ranculus stories.
I sympathize with the way to much yarn in your stash. My goal is to get this down. Some of my stash is inherited from my mother-in-law. I now have plans for a sweater with monarch dove yarn and I wonder if it is 50 yeats old. I have not bought any yarn this year and have made 6 sweaters and have 2 more on the needles. Also have 5 more in my queue. I have also made a few hats, several scarves socks. Am pleased with the progress I have been making at using stash. My friends thought I should open a yarn shop with my stash. Ha ha.
So many lovely yarns! The top you are wearing looks like such an interesting construction 😊
Isn't it strange that TH-cam added numbers on everyone's name?
Have fun with the quilting...my mother in law is OBSESSED with quilting, lol.
Thank so much for answering the questions
I found it really interesting. I love knitting but I also like other crafts, sewing, embroidery and I have just tried candle making. I really want to see you top ten projects for summer maybe. 😊
Loved the Q&A ! It's so obvious that you podcast with an open heart, I'm always happy when a new episode comes out because you are so sincere and true :)
Awww thank you!!
Another amazing video, i enjoy them all so much. Great job on the quilt. Quilt On!
Thank you so much!
My Dutch Oma always had a rug on the dining room table that was on display always and as a table protector under the linen table cloth. I have started this practice on our lovely antique dining table and absolutely love the look. Great podcast, always love the soundtracks you pick. Happy Birthday!!
Thanks for sharing!!
When you say pattern round-ups do you mean when you mention different patterns to us that are interesting as you've done before? If so I really like that. And for sure it would be fun to do a KAL with Canadian designers as the prompt. That was a really nice podcast. Love the videos up at the cottage. Deer flies are the worst. I swell up like a 🎈. Take good care. I look forward to the Ranunculus talk next time. I'm thinking of starting my 2nd one but this time a short sleeve version.
great episode, again, 🫶🏻thank you for bringing lovely entertainment while I am knitting🧶…
maybe the rug could live in a cabin by the lake?
greetings from 🇨🇭
Love your quilt. You have inspired me.
Hi there. I’m from Turkey and I have mine suspicion because of your name. But not quite sure since it’s kind of common. I would love to have coffee with you had you decide to travel to Turkey, either in Istanbul or Ankara. I always envy your coming together with Mega, Mel and other fellow knitters. So🤞. I hope I don’t sound like a stocker😅. Cheers
Very nice video.
❤I am from India ❤
good night and sweet dreams
Very nice quilt. Straight stitching on the binding is how most quilters do. 5 inch squares end up 4.5 inches due to the seam allowance. Missouri star quilt tutorials, Pat Sloan , Donna Jordan tutorials are great. Keep it up. No a queen size is large but very doable if that’s what you want.
I will look them up!!
Looking forward to your next episode with your Ranunculus. A few of my friends are about to begin a Ranunculus KAL. I enjoy seeing your planned projects. Barbara (NZ)
The Caspar Tee is a beautiful pattern ! ❤❤❤
It is indeed!
Thank you Selma for an entertaining episode.I too am a lover of languages and words .German,English,French,Italian and Ndebele.Your quilt is beautiful and the backing fabric was a perfect choice👌Go well in your days.👋🙏♥️🐨🌏xx
Have a great summer. Love your quilt, you should be so proud of yourself. Enjoy your knits and upcoming up sweaters on your needles. Video is great thank you for checking on it. Lovely podcast as usual. ❤
Thank you 😊
It was much nicer to film with regular video mode!!
Love your yarn wall 💜💗💚
3 Ply Podcast #90 talks about the Look at My Holes sweater at 7:04 They also have a nice picture of the three of them, who are different sizes. I wonder if the question about goals were asking how you did on your June goals like you did for April and May?.. Can you use your rug as a rug in a low traffic area? Belated happy birthday!
Oh Selma! I was just at friend’s cottage on Blue Sea lake last week (24th to 27th)! I’ll have to show her this footage 😊 it is a beauty of a lake isn’t it!? Love the yarn combo for Ranunculus too, gorgeous! Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦 Take care, Taira
Wow that is quite the coincidence!!
I have answer to that question about mohair in summer and it is, guess what, the Ranunculus, lol. Knitted on 6 mm needles and in a single strand of standard silk mohair, I've mostly worn it in the evenings at the sea side over my top/t-shirt and it's been perfect. I don't think there is much of a difference between different mohair brands in this regard though, there are some which seem less fluffy with higher silk content (40% is as high as I've seen) but they are still very much as warm as the more fluffy ones, so nothing I'd wear in the heath and even in the evenings if the gauge was tighter it would have been too much for me.
Loved the episode, thank you! And I'm very much looking forward to the Ranunculus special.
I admired your Ranunculus (while knitting the Nila Top) and thought: that yarn looks really similar to mine. Looked it up. We're knitting with the exact same shade of Tynn Line 🙂 I actually bought it 2 years ago and I was really on the fence till I started knitting with it. I don't love how marled it looks in the ball. But it sure does even out (no discernible marl) when knitted. Strangely, your complementary yarn didn't interfere with my ability to recognize the Tynn Line.
Happy birthday 🎉❤and many more to come . Love from Istanbul
Merci!
What a lovely quilt 😊 Bravo ! Looking forward to the next episode about Ranunculus which I have not yet knitted. All that you say about podcasts connecting people is precisely what we viewers also feel. Thank you so much for sharing and being my virtual knitting friend 🙏
When you do your podcast about your Ranunculus sweaters, could you say how much ease there is between your bust size and each sweaters actual measurements, since you made a variety of sizes? I'm trying to figure out which size I want to make for myself. I'm in the process of making one right now in size 1, but I want the next two, which I have yarn for, to be a bit bigger. But I'm not sure how much ease I need for the look I want.
Smashing podcast, thank you Selma! So enjoyed seeing your quilt - a real labour of love - and to hear your amazingly ambitious plans for the next one!
I was thrilled to be a prize winner. First time for me and a real excitement.
Great Q&A session and a beautifully serene visit to the cottage.
Love and gratitude, Linda UK 💕🧶
I enjoy pattern round ups.
Very nice thoughtful podcast ❤
Selma, ha sido precioso este episodio, has compartido muchas cosas! mil gracias!!!
Gracias Lilian!!
Your quilt turned out beautiful. Well done!
Thank you! 😊
The string quilt using paper is a pain because you need to pull the paper off. You can sew the strips onto a light weight muslin so you don’t have to tear it off. Quilt squares will be a little heavier but a nice weight.
Interesting idea!!
I enjoyed your podcast as usual. Especially today. I broke my left knee. So have been in treatment. My little dog is tired, she ran away yesterday, was found, but this morning she would no go outside. Lol
Oh dear lots going on over there!! Hope you heal fast!!
Very interesting podcast 👍
Thank you for the summer cabin video. It was a little vicarious vacation!
Love that you are starting to patch and quilt. Re your new quilt I would suggest you make a small version as directed to understand the technique before embarking on a big one going off without the pattern. You could use your sample as a place mat. I have been patch working since 1988, so have some experience. All the best.
Great idea!
FYI for paper piecing you should keep reusing your paper pieces unless it’s a very unusual one with lots of different pieces/sizes
Looking forward to video about Ranunculous. I want to make one with sport weight and a smaller needle, maybe 5 or 6. Trying to work out how to do it.
Charming answers to viewers’ questions. Thank you. You are eloquent and interesting. Wonderful podcast.❤
Such a lovely interesting podcast Selma, thank you so much I really enjoyed it.
The lake cottage looked idyllic and a wonderful place to sit and knit or sew!
Hyvää syntymäpäivää! Whatever you do, do not give away your ryijy! And it’s a family heirloom! We have a few of those in my family as well. If you’re really stuck, let me know and we can figure something out. I’m sure there are museums in Finland that would love to have it.
I’m also thinking about starting the “Look at My Holes” - I have yarn on the way and I’m certainly going to cast it on if I have time. I also would love a Chanel jacket and I actually suggested to Stephanie at Espace Tricot. I would love it if she would design one.
With regard to mosquitoes in the Ottawa area: interesting fact - during the building of the Rideau Canal, the number one killer of workmen was malaria. So mosquitoes have always been a problem in that area.
I also have an enormous stash. But I always tell people there are three parts to this craft: knitting, test knitting and yarn collecting. there is just somethings so wonderful about a new skein of yarn. It just makes me so happy.😊🇨🇦🇫🇮
Hi Selma, I only discovered your podcast in recent months, and really enjoy it. I loved your thoughts on why you podcast, thanks for sharing😊
Welcome aboard! And thank you!
Loved the projects! I'm curious about whether your new quilt involves pieces cut and sewn together from fabric cut at a 60 degree angle, versus pieces whose grainline is straight and just the ends are cut at an angle. This will affect the sewing process, since even woven cotton has stretch when shown on the diagonal versus along the straight of grain.
Thank you for this time, ive just been here for 3 years tho , but lovely to follow you. I do also love language. And Turkey are one of the country i visited the most, learn a bit of the language but thats a hard one. Love French and Arabic. I been in Finland also lot of times but Norway ire neighbors so not that strange. Have a good summer and looking forward to Next episode, i never knit Ranunculus 🌞🙏🌹😍🙄
Thank you so much!
The quilt is fabulous! I had a laugh out loud moment when the question was about your stash, pretty funny. I can sympathize about the the mosquitos too, plenty of them down here in the DC area. Love the pic of Yoda on the freshly washed rug, perfect cat pic! Thanks for the great podcast.
you live in such a beautiful area 😍
Hola Selma! Me encanta tu podcast!
All fabulous! Thank you. 😊
I have made a few string quilts and did not want to use paper. I chose an off white cotton fabric as my base and was very happy with the results.
Great tip!
Happy Belated Birthday Selma!!!
Your quilt turned out beautifully 😍 I look forward to seeing your Pink Velvet Sweater, such beautiful colours.
Thank you! 😊
Oh my goodness - pretty garments, the quilt is lovely, and yay for learning to spin and was that rug! If you seal it up for future generations, add a note. I got a table cloth from my grandmother who had ordered it crocheted for her wedding and NEVER used it. But the note my Aunt put in with it, let me know what a treasure it is. The cabin is so sweet, every time you go, I think what a perfect break it is for someone so busy! Congrats to all the winners. How lovely.
Thank you Liz!!
GM Selma 😊
Happy belated Birthday 🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈
Your quilt is beautiful
Each quilt is done in a unique way … my mom made so many and all by hand with each made differently and I’m so blessed to have a few of❤
Your socks are beautiful and your friend will love it 🥰
Your birthday cast on will be amazing.. love the colour
Enjoy the holiday weekend
From one Canadian to another 😊🥰
Thank you so much!
Selma, wishing you a wonderful summer. Thanks for sharing all your works and for inspiring me. We have a close family friend tying the knot in September and I must make a pair of socks for the couple. I agree that's a perfect handmade gift.
Good idea 👍🏻
Love the colors on your quilt. Beautiful work.
Thank you 😊
