I've shot GH5 a couple years now and looking to upgrade to A7Siii... immediately I thought the footage on the left blew the GH5 out of the water. It's very capable, but the low light, lack of autofocus are the two main downfalls. I never even use my Gimbal with my GH5 because I can only shoot manual focus on the GH5
I feel that 💯, i feel the GH5 is very great when you master manual for sure!
Yeah when it's bright enough for me to raise my aperture like to f7 - f11, gimbal work tends to work well with my GH5!
Have you tried out the A7Siii yet or done enough research to confidently cop it? I like my a7siii a lot!
@@Tyski_Ty I actually pulled the trigger on ordering an A7IV last night! only starting with Tamron 35-150 I will report back my thoughts I still need to pick a couple more lenses lol

Yesterday I had a shoot and needed a b-camera right away, so I ended up pairing the GH5 with the FX3 (same sensor as a7SIII). Both shot with 10bit and log gamma. I love the GH5, been using it for almost 6 years, but when I start cropping-in to these shots, the FX3 shots hold up SO MUCH BETTER than the GH5. In the GH5 I could see a ton of noise at ISO400, compression artifacts, harsh highlight rolloff, and muddy skin detail. The FX3 shots looked rock solid enlarged to 250% at ISO800. No visible grain, deep color detail all around. Grading FX3 footage in S-Log3 was super quick. Grading V-LogL footage from the GH5 is usually a little tricky even though I set custom white balance on both cameras. Using a color picker, I could tell that the GH5 was more accurate with cool tones and FX3 more accurate with warm tones, especially skin tones. But with some work I was able to match them at least in terms of color.
Yyooo thats dope! Hahaha you basicly set up the same combination as me haha! I still love my GH5, i am open to switching it for the GH6 but thats for another time when its more affordable haha.

Nice comparison man. I had Cam A as the GH5 until I saw the last bit with the skin. When I saw that slight magenta cast, I knew the Cam B was my beloved GH5 lol.
Lol The GH5 definitely stand out the moment you see focus breathing too 😆, either or, its still my favorite camera to use 😊

very smart test, not revealing beforehand the camera! I guessed that B was the GH5, as the bokeh is slightly less than A, though it´s true that for the Sony, the focal length would have to be doubled. Expect my GH5 to arrive today - regards from Germany!

@@Tyski_Ty thanks, it´s a great piece of engineering. I own also the FZ2000 which has a 20 times zoom lens. Panasonic is really good for films. Keep up the good work!

I'm deciding to pick up a thrid body so that it can accommodate my 2 Sony A7Siii. Only because the GH5 shoots 422 10 bit also. Would you recommend?
Oh word! that whats up! so a 3rd camera being the GH5? I definitely recommend for sure! The GH5 quality & capability for its affordable price is amazing. May be different for you but roughly you could make back the money from purchasing a GH5 with nearly 7 - 14 clients or maybe even 6 - 10 biweekly paychecks 😀 ! but its worth for sure!
@@Tyski_Ty thank for the response! I just hope that I can at least try to get the color to match as close! I shoot weddings so I just need that extra flexibility in 10 bit. It would be just a stationary cam in the back during the ceremony.

I was between a7 xxx and gh5. And this video helped to make my decision. 1:18 gh5 kills the Sony. Amazing camera for the price.

cool vid. Remember that M43 has a crop and that applies to the aperture as well. So if you shoot Sony @ f2.8 that would be an equivalent of f1.4 roughly on M43. Shooting both @ f2.8 isn't a fair test from that standpoint (in terms of DOF, rendering, etc.)

@@Tyski_Ty Ya these are both great! I own the GH5, GH5s, A7siii, A7iii and pretty much every single Fujifilm camera, I also shoot Leica for some projects. Dont really care about the sensor being M43 or FF but I care about what I need when I need it and which works best. Keep making videos ;) cheers

Every shot I thought the Sony was on the right until the last shot. I could tell which was M 4/3. Other than that, you can’t really tell unless you know what to look for. As always it’s about the camera user, not the camera itself.
I feel that 💯, i can watch my own video yrs later & be forgetting which side is which 😄 haha. Yet both cameras do justice for me on multiple objectives!
The tint and slow focus gave the GH5 out. The GH5 still remains my best

Bro I consider myself a camera nerd. Watched A LOT of videos on both gh4 and a7siii and I could not tell which is which from these videos. Holy crap. Thanks for the video man. I learned that color science is too specific and nuanced for me to be a criteria. And so is "video quality". They both looked excellent. Couldn't tell between the m43 "slightly more video-y look" and the full frame "that full frame look' look... However, two big factors of mine are low light (there's equally as much cool stuff to capture at night), autofocus, stabilization. The a7siii checks all 3 boxes, but is almost twice the cost of the a7c which checks low light (mostly) and autofocus. The Sony ibis is not great compared to gh5. So far I'm between the a7c and a7siii

I got it right. The autofocus and the stabilization gave it away
I actually preferred the GH5 image even thought the 25 is a much cheaper lens - ha. And as another commenter mentioned, the full frame equivalent of the 25mm 1.7 is a 50mm 3.4. Remember to double your focal length and aperture to get more equivalent field of view. So a more apples to apples comparison is the Sony at 35 2.8 compared to the 16mm 1.4 from Sigma on the GH5 because you double it for equivalence so it would be roughly 32mm 2.8). But thanks, for the comparison - keep them coming!!
I feel that, the GH5 has such great quality! Ah yes for sure i do appreciate that look out! So weired cause they look near equivalent in dof in editing but does makes sense to do that type of math. I appreciate the support tho ✊🏾 this is why we filmmakers get better cause of the community 🤙🏾
Aperture isnt really doubled on m43
@@freejay3 haha - you’re always there for that. Sure, the amount of light hitting each square mm of the sensor is the same, but it’s a smaller sensor so it’s roughly equivalent to need to double it. If you’re in a dark room with a 2.8 lens in full frame, you’re gonna need a 1.4 micro 4/3 lens for an equivalently bright shot.

The 0.95 noktons i use definitely are not 1.8 when recording fully open.
@@freejay3 That's interesting. I'd like to test that out. Nothing is perfectly equivalent of course - but what aperture would you say the Voigtlander's equivalent be in full frame?? You also have to watch out for the base ISO in cameras - cameras don't have the exact same light sensitivity because they all use their own version of ISO. Tony Northrup did a good video about it.
I have had the gh5 for about 4 years and actually been eyeballing the a7s3 or fx3 now but would have to get all new glass etc so big bucks. I could tell the right was gh5 as there was some focus issues. thus why I am thinking of changing too. auto focus and low light for what I do is needed. Good job.
I feel that, I've been staying off of auto focus on the gh5 at times unless the subject is still & no other subject around that lol. That switch for me was defenitly a price investor for sure haha but yeah im the same way for my content rn so it was needed for me too! 🙏🏾 much appreciated G
You can get around the lowlight performance by using Canon EF glass twinned with a speedbooster. Canon EF f1.8 becomes MFT f1.2.
But there’s no getting around the auto focus issue!
@@colinthecameraguy Ya i was thinking of doing the popular speed booster with sigma 18-35 but I think I will save the money to invested in upgrading the whole system.
@@ExploreTravelTV fair point, I have owned a GH4 then GH5 then part ex the GH4 for a G9 but only got the speedbooster and Sigma 18-35 about 18 months ago and that’s quite a chunk of cash (about the same as I spent on my 42.5 Nocticron) and quite a chunk of lens too.
But since then I bought 3 Used (Canon EF) Lenses:
Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and a Rokinon/Samyang 85mm t1.5 and a Rokinon/Samyang 35mm t1.5
And all 3 together cost the same as the Sigma and Viltrox 🤷

Great vid! GH5, speed booster, and Sigma 18-35 is a beast. I have found it hard to upgrade because of the quality of this combo. Only reason I want a new camera is for picture taking. But now I'm learning how to shoot manual and understanding shutter speed, aperture, and iso as it pertains to pictures and my photos are improving with the GH5 leaps and bounds! The camera I'm actually looking to replace is my old GH4 that I use for B-cam. I feel like I could go a few more years with the GH5 for video. I'm looking at replacing my GH4 with a full-frame camera for pics. I'm not going to break the bank for FF though so I am looking at the Canon eos RP or the Sony A7RII which has a crazy price right now! Really just upgrading the b-cam and photo quality at the end of the day. GH5 combo my main video camera all day! Great vid again bro!
Aye much appreciate 100%! Been wanting that combo for so long, now that i got a full frame & that lens but for sony, i didn't think anything of that combo afterwards lol.

I have gh5 an want sigma 16mm f1.4 instead of 18 35 what do u think as it's a 350 vs 800 dollar difference
@@Random-yz8gb Sigma 18-35 has to be one of the top 5 greatest lenses ever! If you can afford it new or used, GET IT! 16 is no competition in sharpness or versatility!

The GH5 is defenitly a beast, blew my mind when i first got it cause i was coming from the canon T3i (2010 ish camera) & was a huge upgrade! ✊🏾 i feel it though, save as much you can cause I'm sure what you'll invest into getting will be worth for you! Much appreciated too 🙏🏾

I almost pick the right side as the a7siii. Can't tell the difference until almost to the end of the video, which is autofocus feature of the a7siii.

What color profile did you use on the GH5?
I shot with vlog, i used the same adjustment layer for both clips but had to slightly tweek both of them to match!
Great video!!!! The equivalent to a full frame at F2.8 is F1.4 for the gh5 other wise the full frame camera will have more bokeh and that’s were the misconception of full frame having more bokeh than a crop sensor comes from and it’s not true. A lot of big TH-camrs don’t know this they usually do the focal length math and don’t do the aperture math,And the equivalent of a 25mm on the gh5 to a full frame is a 50mm on the Sony other wise it’s not equivalent. Love your content though it feels super organic and legit!

When looking at it through the cameras, the gh5 25mm at 1.7 was being to obvious so i wanted to make sure both were shot at 2.8 , maybe not equivalent but surely enough to almost balance. @@Tyski_Ty Fr bro F1.7 on the GH5 is equivalent to F3.4 on a Full frame because of the 2x crop factor of the GH5 so you just multiply 1.7 times 2 to get the equivalent or if you have a full frame camera at 2.8 just divide that by 2 (1.4) and you know what aperture to match it with the GH5. The problem starts when you use a full frame camera at F1.4 and you want to match it with a GH5 they don’t make lenses that fast it would be a 0.70 if I’m not mistaking but I think that Panasonic is working on some crazy lenses they said last time I really hope they come with the equivalent of an F1.4 on a full frame

Gh5 looks more cinematic while the sony looks more commercial looking, like how the images look on those smart tv's on display in the store.

The gh5 is not greenish it just has cooler color the sony is yellow and more saturated

Dang that’s crazy bro. I thought camera b was the a7siii. Don’t see how the image on the Sony is worth almost 3x the price. GH5 still out here holding its own.
😆 haha yeah that's why i haven't fully switch but rather use both for several things! Yea the sony got a price, especially cause i had no lenses for the sony so not other than 3.2k for the body but 1.2k for the lens too smh but my savings was started 3 yrs prior to this drop so defenitly didn't buy this on spot lol
@@Tyski_Ty yeah no worries bro. It’s none of my business how people want to spend their money. I’m just a cheap ass haha so it’s hard for me to justify that added price for the Sony when the Panny definitely holds it’s own in picture quality which is all that matters at the end of the day.

Honestly being able to shoot 4K@120 10 4:2:2 internally on the A7S iii is probably enough to justify the purchase for most pro-sumers, but there’s a range of other features (including Sony’s AF which now has touch object and face tracking) that make it worth it. GH5 is still an awesome starter cinema camera, though!
GH5 is still holding it's own. Love that cam! But at 1:19 - Why is the Sony picture sooo noisy? Is this really the Sony?
Thats 100% true 🤙🏾. The noise was mostly from the grading after sampling a grade for both camera profile to use

GH5 wins. 10 bit 4:2:2 color. Same as the Sony. The only difference is that nobody likes the colors of a Sony.
Lol the profiles are amazing to shoot it, i can't speak for the other sonys on the lack of there color but as what I've heard they had some troubles in the past

I'm not sure why everyone says the colors on Sony are bad...if you're shooting log you're going to color correct anyway. Unless you're just taking the image straight out of the camera and doing zero editing, colors can be tailored to your liking.
@@OurFantasyLife I agree. Color grading in a log or pores changes everything. It really is a money thing. If I were to rent something I would rent something much more expensive. So, the price point is interesting. The Sony is $3,498.00 plus tax and then the lens. It is 12mp. Which doesn't matter but that just means you can't print photography.. So, you have to buy a photography camera on top of it. The data size of full frame is out somewhat of a problem. Gh5 with a Prime Sigma lens is just so convenient. I can't wait for the Gh6!!!
Sony is unbeatable.
I love the colours of my GH5. I have an A7iii but I mainly use the GH5. I thought about buying the A7siii but decided against it as I can get 4K 10bit from the G albeit a smaller sensor.
Yeah same has that grid like tone i personally like but i do vibe with it a lot! I feel you on that though 🤙🏾. If it works for you deffenitly do so!

I feel that, face focusing shots do give the look to be obvious
gh5 will always have bad noise, the a7siii looks good but u could have used a better profile to m ask the noise, also af on gh5 is so bad
It does at times but op with day lighting, also with the right lighting in distances at the right iso the noise can be cleaned well. Overall still love the GH5!

Ah you ordered the gh5! You may not like it after seeing this side by side review but not gonna lie i still be using my gh5 well during client work than my sony but thats just me!
Im sure you'll find some work flow with the gh5 causes its still a camera that holds well, if not theres the gh6 now haha!
