He is literally the kid you played with in grade school that gave himself overpowered abilities so that he was the only one having fun, and if you don't play by his rules then he's going to go tell on you. He sucks, he's stupid, he's annoying, he can go jump rope in traffic.
My only complaint with Mauraders is that they shouldn't react to *enemies* hitting them, it makes them annoying to fight in groups for all the wrong reasons.
From at first hating this enemy to now finding it to be my favorite enemy goes to show how far I've went in the 500+ hours I've played Doom Eternal, Mayo's Eternal videos have been one HELL of a journey not just for me, but for a bunch of other slayers.
Personally, I hate marauder. He pushes me out of my comfort zone and requires to play any encounter he’s in different from how I am used to. But, when I come to think about it, this is what DOOM Eternal also did. It took me out of my DOOM comfort zone, threw me into a new environment and pushed me to learn and adapt to all the changes Eternal had made. This is why I fell in love with it and why DOOM feels dull after having played Eternal. And Marauder just follows the steps of the game he was made for, word for word. So yeah, I hate him, but this guy, in a way, IS DOOM Eternal.
Nah the actual AI is really simple: Wait if Slayer is far, shoot shotgun if up close, randomly summon dog, throw axes, run towards Slayer like a moron if not too far after arbitrary time limit. The moves he has tho and his crazy defence+mobility is what makes him so interesting, it is simple yet effective like classic Doom enemies in a way, a simplicity the creates complexity.
Marauder disappoints me in that i expected him to be a singular characger that will return multiple times. Every single time being a unique boss fight with him using different weapons. Copy and pasting him and throwing him into random arenas feels lame compared to what i expected
I love how so many reviewers like Skillup or something just lost their minds over the Marauder and a bunch of them started pulling up their armchairs and became Doom philosophers and designers. Good times. All that said, I will always appreciate when developers out themselves out there and pull out the curve ball now and again, I may not always agree with it (I loved the Marauder tho), but I can understand it.
The marauder alone is a great fight, no question. The problem started with master levels when he was placed in locations not designed for him, with too many enemies around him. Or, if there were two or three of him at the same time. In those cases, his AI just completely broke down, and the mechanics that made him fun went out the window. That's when I started hating him.
2016 was superior. Eternal was a stress filled game for me. Not what doom is about. Used to play the originals how I wanted, not like how eternal ended up being.
Nowadays when I see the Marauder I say "Bring it, bruh". I was admittedly one of the players who hated him at first. But I got used to him over time and now I enjoy fighting him.
People were so mad because the Marauder demands attention and patience which totally isn't an enemy type Doom has ever had. (slowly shoves Doom 2's Archvile away)
Used to not like the maurader but I learned to like him more overtime, He's a great enemy because he forces you into uncomfortable situations. Pretty much i knew i had skill issues back then, and still do to an exstent but i have gotten better at fighting these guys.
As soon as I learned that he will never cross in front of your crosshair, it all clicked. I just always kept him stuck on my right or left and wait for the primary attack, running backwards, green flash and then bam.
People saying the Maurauder is bad because it throws a wrench into the gameplay just have an in-the box, games journalist mentality. That's exactly why the Maurauder is GOOD and they just can't think outside the box.
I love that the Marauder raises his shield to block enemy fire. It makes him so much more random. I actively engage Marauders before killing them, purely because I enjoy the duel. They dash, they charge, they pause. It's so fucking cool. If anything could be changed about Marauders, id should patch out the stars and retarded noise they make during their stagger phase. I'd even go as far as to have the green eyes removed when they intend to strike.
@@shadowofthenamelessking new players??? Game's like 4 years old... dont care about new players anymore. Take the sound effect and green eyes away, so as i can enjoy it more. Or give me the option to do so, so as everyone wins. As for me, i would discard speedrunners still running patch 1.1 and enjoying killing the marauder with the ice bomb bug. I love xamide, i love absolutemassive, i love gyc, but on a level, they are all cheating... and its sad, cause no matter how good their speedruns are, they still don't play the game as it was intended to play.
Removing the green flash would be great if he had a different telegraph to replace it. I'd change the animations during his shielded phase so he actually keeps the shield held up, and visibly lowers it when he's about to strike.
my personal tech that I developed is that the Marauder does not block automatically when you bring up the chaingun shield so you can just bash him to death with the shield dash and really rub his gimmick in his own face it's not efficient to only use it that way, but its a good way to get some cheap jabs in, if the Marauder gets too close to you and doesn't glow up that said, I managed to kill the dual marauders on UAC Atlantica like that on nightmare diffculty, so in my eyes, nobody has any excuses anymore
It reminds me of the templars of Assassins creed 1. You could feel like they break up the game, being the only enemy that isn't instakilled by any of your moves. You could feel like it's unfair that they throw four of them at you towards the end. But to me, an enemy that is unpredictable and hard in a flowstate style of game is exactly what you need sometimes. Ass creed1 is a decent game, but without the hidden templars you can find and challenge, i wouldn't even remember the experience. The marauder is a wakeup call from the zen you're in, just like the templars. A definitive change in how you use your resources. While you could play incredibly aggressive in Asscreed 1, templars forced you to time your attacks and learn to properly dodge. It's just a test to see if you've been paying attention. My favorite enemies tend to always be of this type. I call them templars simply due to them being the first obvious kind i've encountered. An enemy that doesn't follow the conventions of the game you're playing. Bosses would fit into this description, but it's more like minibosses. They're fought within the rules of the game, but are distinctly different than how you beat most of the rest of the game roster. A templar does not reward the flowstate, marauders do not reward using kill drops to power through and so on. They break the conventions of the game.
I don't think the marauder is bad design per se but after 100h of rippin' and tearin' I still find the marauder just super unfun enemy. The armored baron is much more fun to fight against.
The Marauder is easly my favorite part of the game. The fact that they introduce it exactly in the middle of the game feels brilliant, because up to that point the slayer has the equipment and upgrades to be able to duel in different ways, in addition to incentivizing the player to improve and adapt to an enemy that respect his lore. I always got the impression that Marauder is like an exam, testing your knowledge and use of skills that the game has slowly introduced to you during your progress. It's like facing yourself. The fact that at the beginning it feels like a boss and then becomes a common enemy that you can easily deal with is my favorite part of Eternal. Entire videos that are dedicated exclusively to seeing different ways how you can humiliate the Marauder.
The Marauder is the coolest DOOM enemies ever made. His character design is very cool. Even with all the coolness, I can agree that he's an annoying enemy to encounter. But I never hated the Marauder.
Fighting multiple Marauders isn't so bad. It's pressure, but nothing I can't handle. The last bit of Horde Mode where you fight multiple Archviles though? That was brutal, it took me some doing. I ALWAYS prioritize Archviles over everything.
i FUCKING LOVE fightin marauder why ? because it a dance, a dance whit death and the only way you get out of that mortal dance is being the best dancer of the two
Hot take: The Marauder's dog is what ultimately made people mad. You're already being punished by sheer virtue of wasting ammo when you shoot his shield. You don't need some mutt to chase you down if you hit the thing you already don't want to hit.
I really appreciate you calling yourself out on certain things. I'm not saying you NEEDED to, but the fact that you did really make's me appreciate you. You don't see that a lot, and it shows how much you've grown as a content creator. Big respect for you man. Can't wait for more coverage of The Dark Ages!
I'll *never* forget that feeling of "aw heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell naaaaaaaw...." when the game put me up against two Marauders lol, I was like "I feel like I just lucked out on the first, and now there are TWO?!"
Started playing eternal again after a couple of years and seeing your vidoes again on it. It still holds up so well. Truly one of the best action fps games ever made.
As much as i loved Doom Eternal when it came out, the Marauder is the reason why i've not replayed it. It really killed the flow for me. Yes, i'm not proficient at the game, but with an enemy like him i never really wanted to put the time to get proficient at it.
In my opinion the Marauder is the most expressive enemy in Doom Eternal, because when you're in a normal fight against demons and he appears, the fight suddenly becomes you vs the Marauder, while the rest of the demons (even the super heavy ones) become jus environmental hazards.
I really like the way the Marauder fights flow, that feeling of a proper dual you need to focus on, but I would be lying if I said it felt really intuitive/ natural. His attack mechanics are just too rigid for it to not feel like an NPC, like you mentioned the Armored Baron was much better designed in that regard. I don’t think you should be able to chip away at the Marauders health like the Baron, but the Marauder could have really benefited from some smaller attacks that gave more opportunities to deal damage instead of just the stun after big swings. That would have broken up the monotonous waiting game and make it feel much more like an actual dual; it would also hide the cheesy elements like his instant shield less obvious. Arguably the stun could then be shorter to make the dual even more engaging. Basically I really loved the Marauder conceptually, but he just doesn’t feel as fleshed out as he could have been
Don’t forget when the marauder just runs up to you, doesn’t swing his axe when you really expect him to, throwing you completely off balance. ID did a pretty damn good job designing him.
"they had to patch the marauder to make people engage with him more" meanwhile me, who's been shooting sticky bombs at his feet this whole time to cheese every marauder I see:
My main introduction to your channel was your Marauder video and it's nice to see a sortof follow-up to it. I still stand in the defense of the Marauders as they helped make the battle feel more exciting. I also love how he basically makes you use your brain and think about how to fight him, especially in a large firefight. Their designs are also huge plus for me as well. I hope to see something similar to them appear in Doom:The Dark Ages.
The maurauder being an enemy that actually changes how you kill something is the kind of stuff I love In a game like this, “shoot it till it dies” gets old eventually
The Marauder and DOOM Hunter are still my favorite enemies. A lot of people, especially new players, when face-to-face with a tough challenge, never think like "What is the best way to approach this?" or "What can I do to make this easier for me?". Instead they are too quick to think "I can't believe the devs put this bullshit into the game!". This problem is also really prevalent in the Dark Souls community as well.
I love that the Marauder spawns his dog when he blocks friendly fire. It forces you to face the dog even if you are careful not to hit his shield, and it also keeps you on your toes. I actually thought the Marauder randomly spawns the dog even without friendly fire. The Marauder is most fun for me when he is mixed with other enemies because you need to juggle between him and fucking up other demons.
Yeah I hate those 90 second long merch pitches. If I'm gonna do something longer it's gotta be elaborate and funny. Otherwise, I'm not gonna waste your time.
I think one important thing to add is also the way the marauder was tutorialized. I first started playing soon after the game’s final update (now with over 1000 hrs… lol) and the way I understand the marauder now is far different than when I first played. I can’t remember exactly what it says but I do remember going into the first fight thinking “ok, only shoot him during his window to damage, and BFG no work”. However, this isn’t the case at all, as we now know the marauder can take damage and be faltered at any point outside of his window as well (splash damage, and can be shot at as long as he’s faltered or his shield is pointing another way), AND can be BFG’d after he’s stunned. The marauder kinda clapped me my first time because I was trying to use the plasma or chaingun thinking they’d do good damage, but he didn’t stun during his window. It didn’t occur to me that I was meant to use SSG or ballista or snipe or whatever bc I didn’t know how to quick swap yet and I figured whatever gun can bring the most sustained damage for his attack window. And that’s the same for other new players by the looks of it is they didn’t fully understand what the proper approach to him is based on the tutorial we received. Now, I just stand there, wait for him to run up to me and either side-step the axe or just wait for his window bc he always gives it when sprinting at you, then you can just 2 cycle him into GK using PB-ballista. He’s almost trivialized unless other enemies are in the mix, in which case I throw splash damage whenever I see him as I’m running around the arena then single him out for any remaining health when it’s safe. The point is that the options are really endless for ways to kill him bc he’s pretty much like any other enemy except can 1-frame block any attack, but the tutorial made it seem like we were supposed to approach him in only a very specific way. I also never thought anything of the stunning sound effects and didn’t even know they were an afterthought until much later, but when I did land the first stun finally with SSG, it did click in my head that he was stunned and that was what I was supposed to do. I also hate the armored baron, I choose to use plasma on it and never hit the weak point bc he literally just becomes a normal baron without range attacks… I think the weak point shouldn’t have broken armor completely at least, as half his fun is outrunning him while I shoot off his armor. His armor likewise can be broken with any weaponry, plasma just does it much faster. People should really experiment with the heat blast mod more because it’s insanely good if you know how to use it…
@@underthemayo I'm not saying it wasn't exaggerated, I'm saying you're doing the same thing when the people you disagree with are "Screaming and crying".
The video that introduced me to Under The Mayo was the quick-swapping video. That was the first video I saw from this channel. I immediately subscribed and I'm still here 4 years later.
I've personally always loved the Marauder. It's just so nice to have a demon that can mess with your plan, getting you to think on your feet, and is a nice change of pace compared to just running thru everything with quickswap combos coz that gets a little boring from time to time
I love this video! I have 200 hours or so on series S, and only recently i have begun looking for new ways to bully marauders. I have optimized bullying every other demon, but i only ever ss balista'd these bad boys. Recently i started using splash damage to get an extra cycle, shield bash + blood punch, sticky bombs and so on. I have soo much to learn and dominate in this game, i believe it is the only game i will never put down
I still think they are one of the most humbling skill check enemy type in an FPS where you actually go out of your way to turn off your autopilot mode, come up with a tactic and actually start focusing on it's movesets and respect them otherwise you get punished hard...Ironically like every good souls mini boss. and it's crazy how they becomes surprisingly easy and fun to fight the moment you figured out a good strategy and stick with them and there's like a lot. Although part of me just wish i could one shot delete them with my BFG and move on,I suppose fighting enemies like these is necessary as it keep you on your toes, builds up your muscle memory with your gear and weapon swapping and everything.it's like an exercise reallly but i do sympathize with speed runners.
This guy adds some flavour to the mix, otherwise all the encounters would feel the same: kill a lot of variety-scale-fodder. All the other other enemies are fodder if you kite them and shoot when turn around
Sticky bomb the floor and keep moving. Aim at their feet….I’m being serious. When I had to fight two marauders in a small room it was just a blur of movement and sticky bombs……trying to manage them both face to face is absurd
Never had too much of a problem with the Marauders, it's only when you have the spirit possessed one do I get pissed because that SOB is too damn fast.
I personally didn’t have any issues with the Marauder, and I was playing when the game first came out. Looking at it from the view of a speedrunner as you mentioned I suppose makes sense, but the game’s entire point is to feel like a more tactical take on Doom. It’s not mean to be the Doom 2016 run & gun, murder everything with the Super Shotgun style, and I really wasn’t surprised when I ran into the Marauder because of this. I still stand by the get good statement that many people said when discussing the Marauder
One theory that I haven't seen thrown about so much is that The Dark Ages looks, at least to me, like it is going to be (or could be, I guess) both a prequel and a sequel. A prequel chronologically, but a sequel from the eyes of the Slayer. Going by the ending of TAG2, it would work.
Correction mi amigo: The secret 5 Marauder fight on World Spear is not limited to the master level. It is there on the base level. Shout out to Allstin for sharing this secret fight on TH-cam. PS I have a clip of me killing all 5 Marauders with 1 BFG shot lol It was lucky and required the hammer.
I just started dealing with the Marauders, and I don't think they are too bad, it definitely takes a little getting used to, but once you have the patterns down it's a lot easier!

The moves he has tho and his crazy defence+mobility is what makes him so interesting, it is simple yet effective like classic Doom enemies in a way, a simplicity the creates complexity.
The video that first introduced me to this channel, revisited!
Marauder disappoints me in that i expected him to be a singular characger that will return multiple times. Every single time being a unique boss fight with him using different weapons. Copy and pasting him and throwing him into random arenas feels lame compared to what i expected
In my humble opinion mayo is the best doom TH-camr there is. Your videos have been beyond helpful to my enjoyment of the game.
Thank you
I like the Marauder, but I like having room to break the rules too. That’s why I like that he can be BFG’d or hammered during a stun.
I prefer 2016 over Eternal but I love the marauders fights. So fun.
I will hunt you down...but based opinion.
Seeing this in my feed while on the toilet is what I needed
Same brother 💪🏼
Used to not like the maurader but I learned to like him more overtime, He's a great enemy because he forces you into uncomfortable situations. Pretty much i knew i had skill issues back then, and still do to an exstent but i have gotten better at fighting these guys.
One thing is for sure; this gent is not a casual gamer!
Marauders, We love to hate em (in a good way)
I love that the Marauder raises his shield to block enemy fire.
That’s just broken for new players then.
I'd change the animations during his shielded phase so he actually keeps the shield held up, and visibly lowers it when he's about to strike.
my personal tech that I developed is that the Marauder does not block automatically when you bring up the chaingun shield
so you can just bash him to death with the shield dash and really rub his gimmick in his own face
it's not efficient to only use it that way, but its a good way to get some cheap jabs in, if the Marauder gets too close to you and doesn't glow up
that said, I managed to kill the dual marauders on UAC Atlantica like that on nightmare diffculty, so in my eyes, nobody has any excuses anymore
If a new demon needed to be added to the series it’s the Marauder.
Once I made it to the Marauder after I died to him a few times, I just looked up how to beat him and learned the basic ssg ballista swap lol
@@flouse.SAME. I beat him the second time. The SSG-Ballista swapping is the saving grace for console players (me)
@@Andman8210 he is the main reason why ARC Complex is my comfort level in the entire game
I ALWAYS prioritize Archviles over everything.
i FUCKING LOVE fightin marauder
why ?
because it a dance, a dance whit death
and the only way you get out of that mortal dance is being the best dancer of the two
Hot take: The Marauder's dog is what ultimately made people mad.
Well thank you for the words.
I'll *never* forget that feeling of "aw heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell naaaaaaaw...." when the game put me up against two Marauders lol, I was like "I feel like I just lucked out on the first, and now there are TWO?!"
Marauder is like your opponent is a fighting game. You learn his moves, punish him, bait him and yet he's still random so its still engaging.
Started playing eternal again after a couple of years and seeing your vidoes again on it. It still holds up so well. Truly one of the best action fps games ever made.
The number of times this clown has thrown me off with his side dash and pulling his shield up when I thought he was about to open up :D :D
I check out all your videos Mayo. Dont stop being you and keep this train a rollin
Your video about TAG 2 controversy is still my fav
"they had to patch the marauder to make people engage with him more"
meanwhile me, who's been shooting sticky bombs at his feet this whole time to cheese every marauder I see:
My main introduction to your channel was your Marauder video and it's nice to see a sortof follow-up to it. I still stand in the defense of the Marauders as they helped make the battle feel more exciting. I also love how he basically makes you use your brain and think about how to fight him, especially in a large firefight. Their designs are also huge plus for me as well. I hope to see something similar to them appear in Doom:The Dark Ages.
I'll admit your Marauder vids brought me here, but you'll always be my top tier reviewer. Mwah
never get tired of being told you're wrong when you're right
The maurauder being an enemy that actually changes how you kill something is the kind of stuff I love
In a game like this, “shoot it till it dies” gets old eventually
I like how that's an actual tip for fighting Tyrants.
I love that Mayo is finally realizing that his channel begins and ends with Doom Eternal

That was the most Mayo merch pitch ever.
"I have this cool stuff, it's by a great artist, look at it if you want. Anyway--"
Yeah I hate those 90 second long merch pitches. If I'm gonna do something longer it's gotta be elaborate and funny. Otherwise, I'm not gonna waste your time.
thanks for the DOOM ETERNAL hype again
still one of my most favorite games in the past few years
I'm team pro-marauder. Love how much he changes the gameplay loop. All of a sudden your plan is COMPLETELY scrapped and you have to focus on him
the marauder is my favorite enemy in doom eternal
No matter how strange the sound effects are in Doom eternal they all Jive with me. Its like it shouldn't fit but it does.
People should really experiment with the heat blast mod more because it’s insanely good if you know how to use it…
Wtf, I could've swore it was like yesterday when you had around 30k subs..? Man, how time flies. Anyways, congrats on 142k! :)
"I objected to the screaming and crying."
Followed immediately by,
"It was exaggerated to the point of absurdity."
It was. "the marauder is the only objectively terrible thing in the doom franchise". Remember that?
@@underthemayo I'm not saying it wasn't exaggerated, I'm saying you're doing the same thing when the people you disagree with are "Screaming and crying".
@@jlcdavenport6268 okay thank you.
The video that introduced me to Under The Mayo was the quick-swapping video. That was the first video I saw from this channel. I immediately subscribed and I'm still here 4 years later.
Thanks for hanging around hope you find more to enjoy.
Marauders are some of my favorite enemy AI to face in any game ever, not even kidding.
It took me a couple days but I went right from marauder-hating newb to heavy Stan. Such an amazing change of pace.
I’m enjoying the Doom Eternal throwbacks, reminds me of how fun the game is
the marauder was awesome it really taught you opportunity of attack and how fast you should be playing in the game.
This guy adds some flavour to the mix, otherwise all the encounters would feel the same: kill a lot of variety-scale-fodder. All the other other enemies are fodder if you kite them and shoot when turn around
That microwave hot dog marauder combo was sick
I love the Marauder’s armor, especially Cultist Marauder
Sticky bomb the floor and keep moving. Aim at their feet….I’m being serious. When I had to fight two marauders in a small room it was just a blur of movement and sticky bombs……trying to manage them both face to face is absurd
And then ballista splash damage puts them in stun
I really love these guys in the challenge rooms
It’s a good new enemy, fits its role pretty well
Maurader is easy once you get good at fighting him. He is easy to kite out of battles into a quieter corner where you can kill him.
My favorite enemy in the game in both looks and combat dynamics. Hope we see him again in The Dark Ages.
I NEVER KNEW THAT SHOOTING THE SHIELD MAKES THE DOGS COME OUT 😅
Few things are as satisfying as deleting a marauder in a couple damage dealing bursts with the SSG/Balista
Correction mi amigo:
The secret 5 Marauder fight on World Spear is not limited to the master level. It is there on the base level.
Shout out to Allstin for sharing this secret fight on TH-cam.
PS I have a clip of me killing all 5 Marauders with 1 BFG shot lol
It was lucky and required the hammer.
I just started dealing with the Marauders, and I don't think they are too bad, it definitely takes a little getting used to, but once you have the patterns down it's a lot easier!
