This one took a long time to put together. Thank you for your patience. I couldn't rush this. For those disappointed by my omission of multiplayer, I'm honestly not the guy to talk about it because I wouldn't be confident in my opinion. Great review, although I disagree about the regular punching. It felt so good in 2016 to be able to beat the shit out of smaller enemies in order to get glory kills easier. It made you feel fucking strong, a sentiment which I feel Eternal kinda lacks in. Overall, great video though.
if you like God Of War, Darksiders 1 and 2 offer similar gameplay and epic setting goodness. I didn't play Darksiders 3 or the top down one, so no comments on them.
This this this. This game taught me for the first time in a long time what it was to FEEL myself moving along the skill curve, learning new mechanics intellectually and then implementing them mechanically in gameplay. There's something so unique and special about this game, and I fucking love Mayo for help to articulate how special it is.
@@guzzy620 - Geez, I took just a second to consider horde mode and I've been _really_ pumped for it since. I don't know how likely it is, but I really, really hope they add it in.
thedoomhunter i agree. usually the game w the most hype around the game awards wins goty (overmatch, rdr2, etc). that being said, this game is so unique in terms of how it structures and paces it’s combat that it will 100% have a cult following in in the future.
when people criticize the platforming i asked myself: Ok what if we removed that? What would there be instead? Walkways and elevators? that sounds seriously less fun than any platformin
It's just annoying because 98% of the time you're ripping and tearing. The 2% of downtime has everyone going: "REEEEEEEEEEE WE ONLY WANT TO KILL DEMONS"
Great concept, executed really well. My only problem is the fact that BFG tendrils on a baron only takes its head's skin off, and I can't tell if I really did much damage then
As somebody who's known how hard you've worked on videos for many years, it's really kickass to finally see the growth you've deserved. I'm happy the Doom community has taken so well to your content and huge congrats on the milestone. You'll be getting that Silver play button in no time at this rate! - Ketchup
Also how could you talk about the amazing sounds of this game without mentioning the absolutely badass bassdrop that plays whenever you pull out your crucible
Yeah it's so freaking sick! If it wasn't an energy sword I would question the design, but some ancient demon energy relic (probably belonged to the betrayer?) Works great :)
The WORST THING in doom eternal for me is the end credits i was so disappointed because the credits in 2016's was so amazing showing you the demons and the weapons you used along the way
@@RockyLXXXVIII Well yeah, but imagine you've gotten so far in Ultra Nightmare, died and forced to listen to Novik's wonderful speech right after, those 10 seconds will feel long and frustrating :)
Fixing the Fortress of DOOM: - Faster door animations + faster and skippable battery animations. - Customizeable Ripatorium. You select which demon categories you want to fight immediately (fodder, heavy, super heavy, ambient). - All DLC skins and unlockable skins can be featured in the fortress of DOOM and not just in the menu. Slayer skins/recolours will be displayed in the same rooms of their og variants. Demon skins are displayed in the toy collectibles shelve and weapon skins in the weapons shelve. - Allow players to select specific level segments. - Campaign modes (like brawler mode) can be selected in the fortress.
All those are great ideas. How about this idea? 2 ice grenades instead of just 1, same as with the frags. The amount of time I spend on nightmare waiting for my one ice grenade to charge up is annoying.
i wonder if the fact that i would spend hours and hours trying to learn TF2 rocket jumping (on a trackpad!) is why i actually love the platforming so much. im whizzing around clinging onto walls dashing through the air spinning like 180 degrees and doing it all over again. just 10 times more interesting than "what about a big long hallway with an arena at each end" like 2016.
It’s a shame the anti-cheat debacle put a sour taste in my mouth, but I still won’t completely hate this game for it. The developers put their heart and soul into DE and really care about their fans. They took full responsibility for the issue and that’s refreshing to see these days.
Yeah I agree, I think it would stay that way if the issue stayed unadressed. But even so I think it would be kinda stupid to write the game off completely based on that one controversy, when the game itself still is that polished. All in all, I have no hard feelings for the devs.
I think the Ripatorium would have been better if they designed it to be a practice room where the Ripatorium recreates every combat encounter and arena so you can learn the combat loop, without playing the level over and over just for that one encounter, so you can be better prepared for Nightmare! and Ultra-Nightmare.
Just A Bit most of the glory kills in 2016 were just punching their heads off. Meanwhile in eternal you stab them several times with doom blade, grabbing axe and using it to decapitate them, and ripping their spine out. The only thing I miss is how in 2016 if u were close to a wall you could smash them on the wall
Well... Yes but it also gave some more that could do some more work, which makes sense. This is a sequel, and it needs to add more (more content/story/gameplay/etc) other than fixing the problems of the first game. Because if it didn't, it's basically just an expansion pack.
I have learned that the jumps in difficulty from one to the next are way more than 2016. Ill finish Hurt me Plenty with 40 extra lives, Ultra Violence theres a chance ill have an extra life at the end. Been playing Nightmare for over a week now and just finally beat the Doom Hunter Base. I'm not fast/ skilled enough with all the equipment usage and management yet. Ill get there, tho!
keep it up, once i mastered nightmare gameplay, the game just felt so different to me. It is so much better and i havent played a lower difficulty since.
Oh you'll get there for sure man, it gets a little frustrating at times and kick your butt more times than you can count, but man does it feel awesome once you get there haha. I just finished playing again for the "Can't Perfect Perfection" milestone on Nightmare and damn did it feel like such a rush to finally beat the Icon of Sin after 2-3 weeks on the whole thing. I'm actually on Xbox too, so don't worry about the platform difference too much. I kinda' did that at some points.
I overlooked Doom 2016 because I wasn't exactly a fan of these "run n' gun" FPS titles, but when I finally played back in 2019, I was mind blown by how much enjoyable that game actually was and got myself thinking "It is almost Impossible that they will be able to improve from this" But hell, did they nail It... Doom Eternal is now my favorite FPS of all time
Just watched the whole video. Everything is on point. Almost everything is mentioned. I'll send this video to anyone who dares to talk shit about this masterpiece of a game.
It's honestly astounding to me how much fun this game is. So much fun, that I was able to finish Ultra-Nightmare. Especially for someone like me, that's saying something. The older I get, the harder it becomes for games to really amaze me. Doom Eternal made me feel like the first time I played Unreal Tournament, and that is one incredible achievement.
@@criticizedreviews1081 You need to beat nightmare to unlock ultra nightmare, I think. Also @MrFrussel I don't like shooters a lot, but I picked up DOOM Eternal and was blown away of how much fun the game was.
@@phobixthething5692sickk, yea I just finished the game on ultra violence, I mean it was hard but slightly easier than what I thought it would be, but I'm looking forward to beating it on nightmare and maybe ultra nightmare
@@criticizedreviews1081 I tried nightmare and it's extremely difficult, but beatable. I didn't beat it of course, it takes a lot of practice and skill.
@@criticizedreviews1081 You do not have to beat it on nightmare I have no clue what he's on about lol you just have to start a new save file and when it's on diffuculty select you choose ultra nightmare.
My first playthrough, blind, I'm playing on extra life mode nightmare. The threat of permadeath and an aggressive skill curve I've never encountered before, and I love it. Best shooter I've ever played.
Honestly, took me a couple encounters to realize that sound is the Tyrants targeting, always thought it was just part of the soundtrack, and that’s not a bad thing
You seem to be the first TH-camr who had almost the exact same experience with the game as me. I can't help but smile in excitement when the game pushes my limits and the platforming only ever stopped me for a few seconds which was great for some active downtime. It's easily my favorite shooter ever made.
@@suremarc pretty much, tho out of all reviewers i listen to him the most because let's face it who doesn't watch the gameplay videos then watch the review for the comedic value
Especially in the video series referenced Yahtzee and Packard were assigned "For" and "Against" the topic randomly regardless of their preferences. So the arguments he made might not be what he actually thinks - he's just the speaker
especilly since Yahtzee is more of a entertainer then a reviewer. also, he thought Overwatched was the better game when he did his Overwatched vs Battleborn "review" video. just what the hell was he thinking? A class set switching game vs a MOBA, of course the MOBA is more complex and not for everyone.
This review was such a breath of fresh air, you have no idea. It’s immensely refreshing to find a gamer who doesn’t adhere to the rampant toxicity that resides in the contemporary gaming community. I subscribed.
I hope it comes back, honestly the new combat mechanics seem to be absolutely begging for a combo meter or even a score system along the lines of Bulletstorm. But also, it had better not count as one of the Singleplayer campaign DLCs!
Arcade mode made 2016 very replayable. It encouraged me to learn the maps and spawns and made me a much better player. Would be great if it came back to Eternal
@@InnuendoXP for me it seems like arcade mode was a first look at how eternal would play out. I always tried to go for max points, thus you could no longer rely on the best weapon combos, but once that maximize point's. So, the combat shotgun equipped with the triple shot became my most used weapon. That meant wasting lots of ammo, thus actually having to enough of it most of the time which was really challenging. I also used other weapon more often, like the heavy cannon with the scope which I learned to laugh. It was so strong again imps and other fodder enemies, I miss it in doom eternal. I also learned to use the plasma stun shot in combination to stun and get easy headshots. I loved planning the routes for the levels, I had to take many things into account when playing the levels like ammo, multiplicator, medal overflow and time. I just absolutely loved it and it felt so rewarding achieving the slayer medal. I wish they would put it into eternal.
Final sin doesn't nail the industrial cultist facility feeling for me. I really do like the map design though, there were so many arenas that made me shit my pants when I saw it coming up
@@kyotra he did seem confident in his side of the argument as he went as far as to claim that was his own opinion on the topic But Yahtzee was right about this bit: you can b discouraged from keyhunting and jumping around since u take damage from resetting from a fall. Go into combat after a few failed jumping attempts and see if u still want to jump around searching over bottomless pits
I think the main reason doom eternal turned out the way it did was because ID software are very pro-consumer and actually listen to the fan base, while most companies like EA, activision, blizzard, or even Sony, don’t listen to their fans and treat them like they’re just talking wallets (perfect example would be the bfv fiasco). Also, the doom community is all around straightforward on what they want and are friendly compared to other fanbases. Also, example of ID being pro-consumer, is all the post doom eternal launch controversies- the soundtrack and the Denuvo- they took full responsibility and explained what happened and why they made the decisions that lead to the controversy, instead of some companies calling the fans “uneducated” or abusing the copyright strike system
Well, the Doom community is also way less accepting than those others. As composer Mick Gordon said "If Doom fans don't like what you've done, they'll burn your house down."
Robbie Straschewski, it’s not that the Doom community is toxic or intolerant. It’s that we expect so much more of ID. And we are more often than not lucky to get what we want.
@@tromboneman4517 and I'm saying we don't take it lying down, Mick was being hyperbolic, if ID does something scummy we'll make our displeasure known in a very loud manner.
The doom community is so tame, compared to most, and getting in touch with Hugo is really easy. He really does read what fans say, he doesn't mind being tagged on Facebook. I've had a few conversations with Hugo over the months. The Doom community itself is very friendly, mature overall, not very toxic, but yes, don't fuck with the game. Don't try to make it something it's not. It's honestly my favorite community, only one that compares to me is Titanfall because it's very small and close knit.
the console version is the exact same, except for the problems with the anti-piracy update edit; the only bugs i’ve experienced so for is problems with lost souls
@@underthemayo I've watched gameplay by SmvR, noticeable things so far: quick switching is jarring, has to be done via weapon wheel lack of buttons on a regular gamepad is quite evident, attachable back paddles help out a lot And also a note from me, a disregard of gyroscope aiming should stop. It's much better than sticks and even similar to mouse aiming. Also, may be false, but I read a review on DTF that states that if you plug in a gamepad, demons become less aggressive.
I've been playing this game for a year now, almost every day I think, and I gotta say it might be my favorite game ever now. I'm no advanced player, as I play on switch and the controller is kinda awkward, but I'm at a level where I can just rip and tear demons creatively with all my weapons and it's just immensely fun. This game is so damn entertaining is kinda addictive. I also liked that you can unlock skins and other cool stuff through milestones, kept me invested in playing to earn those rewards. 10/10 Best action game ever.
Few thoughts: 1. Glad to get a Doom Eternal review from someone who can actually play the game. 2. Opening level IS simpler but all that brown was super off-putting. I get that it looks and feels like Quake for a sec and that's... neat... but I would have preferred a brighter opener. 3. Gotta love how you just do the platforming like anyone with a brain and make the complainers look like morons 4. I really liked the more grounded presentation of 2016 and the closer focus, and I have a little disappointment with Eternal's Saturday-morning-cartoon approach to the apocalypse.. but, it's still a ton of fun. 5. I'm a little bit of an outlier on the story and lore front, as I'm an avid fantasy and sci-fi reader, but I found the vaguery of 2016 to be intriguing, while the strangely clear history and plot for Eternal felt like a quick rehash of a Malazan Book of the Fallen plotline. It was still decent, but Eternal kind of killed my Doom story buzz, and I wasn't expecting it to. Sometimes less is more. 6. I don't love the more video-gamey presentation in Eternal, it tears down the immersion I have in being the Slayer and fighting extradimensional demons. I get the appeal, it is more simple mechanically and easy to understand, but it harmed my investment. 7. At the end of the day, I like the experience of 2016 more, BUT Eternal's combat is an enormous improvement, and that's what we're here for, right? A couple of other high points for Eternal, Slayer Gates Better weapon balancing Better grenade balancing Ammo shortage encourages weapon switching and chainsaw Awesome updated glory kills Incredible enemy design, leading to complex and frantic encounters the require creative solutions Amazing soundtrack Platforming--yeah, it's a plus, fuck you I love Eternal, and I'm glad to see a high quality youtuber give it good treatment. Keep ripping and tearing, I love your content Mayo
"No! You can't make a game that is designed to push the player beyond their limits and encourage them to learn more about the depth of the mechanics! I just want to hold down left mouse and win the game!" "Haha, weapon switch combos go BRRRRRR!"
@@rarespetrusamartean5433 I swear, there are dozens of weapons in CoD, but it could bring that number down to 4 and still maintain its original complexity.
@@bearman_1826 I remember back when I (regrettably) liked cod, I never knew what weapon to choose, they all felt and performed the same. DOOM 2016 pulled me out of that mire and showed me what a *real* shooter is.
@@grod5998 hey man, you can like whatever game you want. But yes, arena shooters/boomer shooter _are_ the superior video games, and anyone who doesn't play them will not reproduce.
@Mate Eternal To put it simply, it's like a mini Unity Engine. You can lut any texture you want, completely warp the geometry as you like, custom almost everything, ect ect.
Yo, I wanted to see more of the betrayer too. I think they lost a chance at some interesting character development. They could've had him leave his self exile and turn up again to help you in some way (I was surprised this didn't happen; I genuinely think it would have been more satisfying if _he_ stabbed the icon's heart). They hyped him up in the trailers, but then diminished him to a 5 minute role as "some broody hell hermit". He could have been so much more interesting.
I thought for sure he was going to rescue Doomguy after killing the last Hell Priest. I mean, the whole reason Doomguy went to Mars was because it had the only portal to Sentinel Prime in the known universe, and VEGA couldn't open one himself. Then, what happens when the level is over? VEGA opens a portal in Sentinel Prime. THEN WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE ENTIRE MARS CORE LEVEL!? Plus, yeah, seeing him fighting alongside Doomguy in some way during Final Sin would've been great. This is a very personal conflict for him, and he's just sitting in the dirt somewhere. Remember how he said that when his son's soul is laid to rest, then so will his own? Imagine if when Doomguy had slain The Icon of Sin, we got to see The Betrayer's body denigrate like he'd been "thanosed" as he thanks The Doom-Slayer, leaving behind his soul (like the Night Sentinels that give you Praetor Tokens) as his boi's soul leaves the icon, they're reunited, and drift away. Heck, maybe the icon even drops a silver coin just like what was used on the Hell Priests, and Doomguy takes it as he walks away. There's just so much lost potential with the cutscenes. Doomguy feels too passive, casual, and uninterested in anything that's going on. I loved his ferocity in 2016.
Yahtzee complained about invisible walls which is a legitimate complaint for a game that is supposed to encourage exploring levels for secrets. I personally ran into a lot of invisible walls myself.
I saw a lot of people hating on the limited amount of ammo you can carry, and I was a little shocked by this at first, but this became one of my favorite things about the game. It's such a genius design decision that forces you to use the right gun for the job, target weak points, use grenades, blood punch (and be conscious of charging blood punch), weapon swap, and go in for chainsaw kills. I seriously don't think I've ever seen gameplay this rich before.
It’s finally up! Okay, I’m gonna take this opportunity to give a quick hot take: DOOM Eternal would highly benefit from SnapMap and it was a massive developer mistake to not include it. The main reasons why? 1. SnapMap was in DOOM 2016, and it simply feels like a step backwards to remove a feature that thousands of people enjoyed. 2. DLC is not eternal. The upcoming content drops are going to be amazing, but there’s only so much that developers can make for a game. In the time it takes them to produce a single DLC, SnapMap makers could create hundreds and thousands of unique levels and games for people to play in the meantime. 3. Not every create mind knows how to mod. I do back mod support and I think it needs to be included in the game, but the majority of people with ideas do not know how to code or mod and may likely never know, so including in-game tools for both communities to utilize would hurt no one and benefit so much of the playerbase. I have more, but these are the main reasons why.
Cody Robinson That’s why I commented! I have a video on my channel gaining some attention discussing why DOOM Eternal needs SnapMap. I made it in hopes of the video becoming popular and reaching the devs. If id Software sees a video with hundreds of comments and likes talking about SnapMap and DOOM Eternal then they may change their mind and put it into the game!! But I have to get support behind the video. As many comments, likes, views, and shares that it can get. The more activity the video gets, the more credible it will look to other viewers and the developers. I don’t care if you subscribe to my channel or watch my other videos, I just want SnapMap in DOOM Eternal and coming together and voicing our opinions (as demonstrated with recent events) is a great way to get a movement going and to get things accomplished.
If we had to choose between snapmap and mod support I'd honestly prefer mod support, just because snapmap, while simple to use, was also very limiting, while people who do have the skills will be able to produce amazing quality new content that'll keep people coming back in a way that snapmaps couldn't. Doom Eternal as a game platform is prime for a Quake 1 remake that'll never happen any other way for example. That snapmap was also limited by the lowest common denominator hardware (Xbone) was an issue for the PC audience too. For accessible community content, A level editor along the lines of what you get in the Farcry games would be even better than snapmap in my opinion. It gives players access to prefab items they can edit right down, as well as giving them access to more micro details and tilesets.
The thing is though, the simpler level design of 2016 fit the modularity of SnapMap much much better than the huge, complex spaces of Eternal. A level designed in 2016's SnapMap would be orders of magnitude more boring than anything in Eternal's campaign.
@@jonahwolf3252 Snapmap was too simple even for 2016's level design outside of a couple of indoor arenas imo. The spaces just felt like big boxes, boring big boxes at that.
10:44 Doom Parkour: jump and swing until it is done. 14:03 Reminds me of that video Razbuten did with his wife where, as a non-gamer, she tried to play Doom 2016 by pushing explosive barrels to the locked doors in that area in the beginning of the game where you kill a bunch of imps to unlock the doors even though the game is programmed to just have one of them unlocked to progress the level. 19:19 I hope in a future update, they add an option in the audio settings that lets you play any of the songs you unlocked in the Fortress of Doom in the campaign levels.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO MENTIONED THESE GAMES TOGETHER. Ever since I first played DmC 5 (was also my first DmC game) I didn’t think anything could match the insanity that was that game and I still don’t think anything in the action genre can. Then I played Doom 2016 which does what DmC does for action games but for FPS and Eternal takes that to the next level. DmC 5 and Eternal are cousins in my eyes.
bro the way you killed the pinky around 6:00 was nutty, freeze him in place with the plasma focus to circle him????? im still learning this game's basics so seeing that was insane
Yeah, he LOOKED more threatening. Still a pushover even in Eternal though, sadly. I always liked these boners even after Plutonia tried to make me allergic to them.
@@jordanboyd5587 "Too skeletal"? They have flesh now. Back in Doom II, they were actual skeletons, but ever since 2016, they dropped that, and made them more zombie-like.
Awesome review! How long was your script for this one? I could imagine it was mad long, but I really enjoyed the review and your talking points! Congrats on the 30K subs!
This guy deserves more recongition. He mentions everything in great detail. He broadens your mind and makes you realise how much more there is to this game and how much effort is behind all of it.
That was a very well considered review, as much as I could tell you are enraptured by this game and not coming at it from the perspective of a 'discerning critic,' I am likewise in love with the game and enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the experience.
I had just started eternal right before i found your channel (and thank god before the Marauder) and honestly your presentation and just how well your videos are done is what keeps me so interested in your videos. Not to mention you have fantastic advice on taking down troublesome enemies. I am SO BAD about running blindly into rooms in just about any game, and watching/listening to you play just makes so much better sense to me. I now plan out a room and plan my movements BEFORE I do them because I'm so much more confident on how to combo enemies now. I didn't even think about combo-ing enemies and just how essential it is in Eternal. Thank you so much for making these videos, and you have definitely helped me to become a better player, how to think strategically, and to never give up!
I've seen so many people misunderstand the GOO; the game is trying to tell you: "ok, you can survive a lot because you can move really fast, now that mobility is gone, what can you do? Here, out of your confort zone, you can learn new strategies". You will probably panic the first 2 times, but then you LEARN. You naturally find out how useful the meathook and chainsaw can be for mobility, how the freeze grenade can be a god tier item and how the chaingun can be awesome even if you can't move a lot thanks to the shield mod. It's the opposite of a vertical slice, it takes away from you something you have given for granted and the you rely on to teach you.
I can not agree more. This is my favorite fps and one of my fav games of all time. The combat design is just perfect, forcing you to make decisions on the fly constantly and giving that adrenaline rush that no other game can, to the point that even hours after playing it i can still feel the my muscles tense. One of the aspects that most made me feel in love with doom eternal is how they improved in the sound design of the series. The one room where the pinky comes through a wall was great, purely because i listened the pinky grow, and instantly pulled out the Super shotgun knowing it was him. What a fantastic game
As much as I hated getting sucked out of the environment for a tutorial, I never would've actually known the game mechanics until another playthrough. Just because you don't like something, it doesn't mean it is stupid or unnecessary.
id has always put out quality shooters, but they could still make some significant improvements to the console versions' controls. Among other things, they've set a hard speed cap on how fast players can switch to most of their weapons.
Master Deity I'm a console scrub, PC is too much of an investment, but Doom Eternal is so fucking good I've completed it on nightmare with basically no problem
I just brought this on sale. One of my best summer “sale”purchases in years! Playing on nightmare, I haven’t screamed out loud after beating tough parts since the last god of war Valkyrie fights. Satisfaction is amazing in this game!. 2016 is a JOke! Looking forward to the DLC!
Same here., but to this day, I still find it COMPLETELY fucking retarded that people still say that the “PLaTfOrMiNg & RaInBoW cOluoR aMmO PiCkUpS mAkE tHe GaMe UnPLaYaBLe!!” Man... such stupid complaints!! If anything the platforming makes the game 100% better
Ironically the worst part about Final Sin was the boss itself. In the first phase when he punches you, you just fly off of the stage; I'd prefer if the back wall was solid instead of having a bunch of giant holes in it. The second phase isn't nearly as bad, you get much more space to move around.
That bit where you talked about the progression of the player through the campaign was really cool. I felt the exact same things like you said. I got very frustrated in the first two levels (especially Exultia) and around the middle of Cultist Base something really did click. It was like the moment where Neo understood he was 'the one'. I don't know if its one of my favorite games or not but i can confidentally say that it's the best combat system i've ever played.
I'd love to see a Doom animated mini series, much like the one Diablo got. Something that establishes lore, maybe tells the actual beginning of the story. That would be awesome!
I found your channel because I was loving Doom Eternal, and you fit the TH-cam algorithm. You became one of my favorite channels because of how intelligent your arguments are. Personal preferences aside, no one can argue with any of your points. Doom Eternal 10/10, Under The Mayo 10/10.
Something that really annoyed me about Doom 2016 were the long in game cutscenes, where you would just sit and watch someone talk. Not only were they uninteresting, but they lasted way too long, but the worse thing about was that they were in game, so couldn't skip them, making it really annoying to sit through these cutscenes during replays of the game. Doom eternal handles cutscenes a MILLION times better. Not only are they cool moments, they're skippable, so I don't have to watch it again during a second playthrough, but their still in engine and not pre-rendered, so you're getting that higher frame rate. So it really pisses me off when people say that they liked doom 2016 better because it had less story and cutscenes.
I’ve been playing this game for months now and have been improving too no doubt. However, I for one am yet to come across someone as dedicated to this game as you (I only recently discovered your channel). Respect man and this review vid of yours is certainly the best review vid I’ve ever seen in my 24 years of existence,
In my 30 years playing FPS games, doom eternal is probably my favorite single player FPS to play. It's perhaps not my favorite FPS game ever to just experience once and put down, but it's extremely rare for a single player FPS to be fun enough to simply play that I want to replay it many times to master it. In fact, the only other FPS games that ever made me want to do that were the original 3 halo games. Great review.
Same here! When i was a kid, i would repeat those games, and do the legendary campaigns without dying. Halo 2 was definitely the hardest, thanks to those jackals. But yeah good times. Mastered doom eternal as well, and beat ultra nightmare.
I wish people would leave "Game of the Year" declarations for the actual end of the year. There's six months left in this one. It makes the accolade worthless (and ad nauseam).
Easily my favorite TH-cam channel to go to. You're like a cat 6 demon destroying hurricane. Love your game play as it is the same way I play, I'm just not that good. Your reviews are easy to watch and the fact you don't complain about things like TH-camrs seem to enjoy doing has also got me to create a Twitch account to follow you as well. Thanks for your time and effort into making these for us. Get the silver and gold play button bro!
When it comes to games like these as well as games ala DMC, I use the fighting games and Sonic games method to look for reviews: I don't trust mainstream media, I look for specialists for their input. Glad you revied it like so. Thanks for giving it the justice it deserves.
@DarkSonic180 in the beginning, yes. You're kinda forced to use the precision bolt and sticky bombs, but it opens up so much more after you unlock all the basic abilities like the dash and flame belch.
Great video as always. It would be interesting one day to see a video about what you personally expect from future DLC or the next game. Specific wishes for a future game, or simply ways to make the current game better.
Man I actually didn't enjoy Doom Eternal that much because of the issues you mentioned like the ammo capacity, and it kind of felt too hard to be played casually for me. But then I started watching your videos on it, and learned about the advanced mechanics, and then I truly understood how deep this game is. I actually still have it installed only because of your videos, and I don't get time to play games these days, but I keep it just in case I want to try these basic techniques that I ignored because I wanted to play it like a traditional FPS where you can turn your brain off and just shoot stuff, this game is kind of too intense for that playstyle. I also REALLY appreciate how much work you've put into this, like as a creator myself, I can understand the pain it takes to script a 40 minute video, and create different segments to turn that into a video. I can't even imagine how you must've been able to keep a track of which footage to use where because all of them look the same in the thumbnail. There was a video from Taran of LinusTechTips where he mentioned how he created one video just for the joy of creating it, even though he couldn't share it with other people, and I think this video kind of resonates with that, given that you know that reviews for this game has been out for very long, and you may not get a lot of views, especially because people are way less likely to watch a 40 minute video from a non Top tier gaming channels, but you still made it, and that passion for creation is something that I immensely respect. It's not easy to be a creator, especially in the gaming industry, but I really hope you keep going and become popular and successful. Best wishes.
I am a bit too late to comment on this video but you actually promoted this game in a sense that a lot of people played all modern doom games after this review : ) I am one of those people. Good review.
Thank you, what’s the deal with bitching about platforming? I genuinely thought that it was just buggy for some people and it didn’t grab them ledge when it should have or something when I first started hearing complaints about it. The platforming is easy and quick. The only possible level you could even fuck it up is maybe urdak
Mayo. I just wanted to say something on top of the fact that you are an incredible creator here on TH-cam with how detailed and passionate your videos are, this being no exception. What I want to add to that is that I'm finally giving ultra nightmare my undivided attention but...... being on my 8th try now, my very first try at UN I fucking dropped the ball at the last arachnotron .BUT I got all the way to the end! Now I'm clearly not in the same mindset...... thank you man. I'm trying to channel you here in UN while polishing my style.
I LOVE THIS REVIEW ITS WHAT I HAVE BEEN THINKING PLAYING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME!! ESPECIALLY THE SPIDER DEMON WEAKPOINT POINT YOU MADE. in the first few minutes at least(this comment was made before watching all the video)
Totally disagree about the pacing and the lore, but hey, to each their own. Overall I loved the game. The only piece of constructive criticism I have about this review is that it reviews it just as a game, but not really as a Doom game. There's so much to talk about in terms of how this game parallels Doom II in terms of gameplay and design. In the same way that Doom 1 was slower paced with fewer demons, and Doom II cranked up the intensity and action, Doom Eternal does the same, and really captures the spirit of classic Doom in a way that Doom 3 never did, and Doom 2016 only kind of did.
This one took a long time to put together. Thank you for your patience. I couldn't rush this. For those disappointed by my omission of multiplayer, I'm honestly not the guy to talk about it because I wouldn't be confident in my opinion. I wanted to talk about some different stuff in this review. Approach the game from a different angle. Thank you for the 30k subs.

Two thing imo that can improve Eternal even more:
-New Game+ w/ all Master Level
-New Game+ w/ Random Enemy type Spawn/Randomizer

And a horde mode. I'm personally keeping my fingers crossed that it will be included in one of the DLC packs.
And A Snapmap Mode 2.0 Update That is Wide As Farcry 5 Map Creator System.

As much as i want it to get GOTY, it probably won't, although as the Action Game of the Year, its a definite win for sure.
thedoomhunter i agree. usually the game w the most hype around the game awards wins goty (overmatch, rdr2, etc). that being said, this game is so unique in terms of how it structures and paces it’s combat that it will 100% have a cult following in in the future.
when people criticize the platforming i asked myself: Ok what if we removed that? What would there be instead? Walkways and elevators? that sounds seriously less fun than any platformin
It's just annoying because 98% of the time you're ripping and tearing. The 2% of downtime has everyone going: "REEEEEEEEEEE WE ONLY WANT TO KILL DEMONS"
Also its actually pretty competent platforming that doesn't even last that long

The gore system is not only cool but good game design. Completely removes the need for health bars because more damaged demons are more tore up
Just a bit of adjustment in the crawl walls and expand the hit detection on the dash refill

Great concept, executed really well. My only problem is the fact that BFG tendrils on a baron only takes its head's skin off, and I can't tell if I really did much damage then

@@RockyLXXXVIII Well yeah, but imagine you've gotten so far in Ultra Nightmare, died and forced to listen to Novik's wonderful speech right after, those 10 seconds will feel long and frustrating :)
A minor unskippable section of an opening cutscene is a problem for you. Sounds pretty petty to me.
Fixing the Fortress of DOOM:
- Faster door animations + faster and skippable battery animations.
I would also add being able to go to the Slayer gates.
-allow players to play with the toys
@@Kazoo_man64 lol yes
All those are great ideas. How about this idea? 2 ice grenades instead of just 1, same as with the frags. The amount of time I spend on nightmare waiting for my one ice grenade to charge up is annoying.
And once all toys are collected you get nerf skins for your weapons
i wonder if the fact that i would spend hours and hours trying to learn TF2 rocket jumping (on a trackpad!) is why i actually love the platforming so much. im whizzing around clinging onto walls dashing through the air spinning like 180 degrees and doing it all over again. just 10 times more interesting than "what about a big long hallway with an arena at each end" like 2016.

When I first picked up Doom Eternal and my first glory kill was the bonk on the zombie, I instantly knew this would be my new favorite game
It’s a shame the anti-cheat debacle put a sour taste in my mouth, but I still won’t completely hate this game for it. The developers put their heart and soul into DE and really care about their fans. They took full responsibility for the issue and that’s refreshing to see these days.
Totally agree. Doom has a healthy future if ID are going to keep it up like this. They're really respectful and listen to us.
Yeah I agree, I think it would stay that way if the issue stayed unadressed. But even so I think it would be kinda stupid to write the game off completely based on that one controversy, when the game itself still is that polished.
All in all, I have no hard feelings for the devs.
To be fair the multiplayer is complete garbage so
ID deserves mad respect
@@pollutedcrimson highly disagree, the only issue is that not much people play it so it hard to find matches
I think the Ripatorium would have been better if they designed it to be a practice room where the Ripatorium recreates every combat encounter and arena so you can learn the combat loop, without playing the level over and over just for that one encounter, so you can be better prepared for Nightmare! and Ultra-Nightmare.
Yes! I don't understand why that room even exists if it's just an encounter like any other one.

@MEME GOD If they appeared, we will burn down their house. These game ARE FOR NOOB. DOOM ETERNAL IS FOR PRO.
2016 had a better story and tone imo.
One of my favourite sounds is when you flame belch a group of fodder and you hear the sound of picking up like 20 pieces of armor
I have learned that the jumps in difficulty from one to the next are way more than 2016. I hope I am not he only one who misses Arcade mode, made 2016 so great. But I dont know if it will ever return.
Arcade mode when on slayer rating gets you Master level arcade mode. Now that’s a doozy.
It might, in the form of more master levels. Arcade mode took some time before it came to Doom 16
Honestly I am a huge fan of the 2016 environment that's why Mars core, arc complex and final sin are my favourite levels in this game .
Exactly. If we had doom eternal gameplay and then doom 2016 environment, ambience, and art style it would be the perfect game
Final sin doesn't nail the industrial cultist facility feeling for me. I really do like the map design though, there were so many arenas that made me shit my pants when I saw it coming up

@@kyotra he did seem confident in his side of the argument as he went as far as to claim that was his own opinion on the topic
But Yahtzee was right about this bit: you can b discouraged from keyhunting and jumping around since u take damage from resetting from a fall. Go into combat after a few failed jumping attempts and see if u still want to jump around searching over bottomless pits
@iain rickwook Well there's a simple solution to that problem: don't fucking fall.
I only wished there were more animations for the chainsaw. I’ve probably seen the same chainsaw animation 500 times now
I think the main reason doom eternal turned out the way it did was because ID software are very pro-consumer and actually listen to the fan base, while most companies like EA, activision, blizzard, or even Sony, don’t listen to their fans and treat them like they’re just talking wallets (perfect example would be the bfv fiasco).
@@RobMustDie482 Basically, we're friendly but violent if pushed. Kinda like Doom Slayer.

Nah bro that's a Tyrant.
Best review I've seen so far my man, great job!
Few thoughts:
1. Glad to get a Doom Eternal review from someone who can actually play the game.
2. Opening level IS simpler but all that brown was super off-putting. I get that it looks and feels like Quake for a sec and that's... neat... but I would have preferred a brighter opener.
3. Gotta love how you just do the platforming like anyone with a brain and make the complainers look like morons
A couple of other high points for Eternal,

This is one of the games that made me want to play on the hardest difficulty if possible
AGREED!!! I love snapmap, but I don’t think the devs have any plans on putting it in the game :( right now there’s no reason to
Cody Robinson That’s why I commented!
And this is why I always go to you when I wanna hear reviews for Doom eternal... because you actually know what your talking about and I like that ^w^
Dunno why people dislike the non-Blood Punch melee. Melee was always weak in DOOM, with 2016 beind the only exception.
Devil May Cry 5 and Doom Eternal are all one needs to satisfy that demon-slaying part of each and every one of us.
Honestly my only complaint is that the revenant looked so much more threatening in 2016 compared to eternal
Honestly; I also liked the Baron design more for 2016, but the Fire Baron is so badass that I'm not even mad.
@@RipRLeeErmey come to think of it, when their flesh falls off, they retain the iconic "red color scheme". But this time, it's lava lol.
Yeah, I think they made the Revenant too skeletal looking instead of gory and skeletal looking.
Congrats on the 30K subs!
hi wraith
TH-cam please give this man a verification check mark
Just as good as i thought it was going to be, amazing work Mayo
This guy deserves more recongition. He mentions everything in great detail. He broadens your mind and makes you realise how much more there is to this game and how much effort is behind all of it.
That was a very well considered review, as much as I could tell you are enraptured by this game and not coming at it from the perspective of a 'discerning critic,' I am likewise in love with the game and enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the experience.
You're becoming one of my favorite youtube channels bro keep it up I appreciate you
How ID Software is going to top this game, I will never know. DOOM Eternal is a frigging FPS masterpiece (with some slight hiccups).
A thing I really miss is the brutal death animations that plays when you die.
The quality and effort that goes into your videos is why you’re still my favorite channel. 👍🏼
I've seen so many people misunderstand the GOO; the game is trying to tell you:
"ok, you can survive a lot because you can move really fast, now that mobility is gone, what can you do?
35:00 Another big addition to this aesthetic is the monsters' facial expressions. I think that goes a long way to give it a unique look.
As much as I hated getting sucked out of the environment for a tutorial, I never would've actually known the game mechanics until another playthrough. Just because you don't like something, it doesn't mean it is stupid or unnecessary.
The fact this game is still pretty playable on console shows how good id are at making shooters
Finally, someone that doesn't shit on the console version.
id has always put out quality shooters, but they could still make some significant improvements to the console versions' controls. Among other things, they've set a hard speed cap on how fast players can switch to most of their weapons.
Lol what? What kind of odd logic is this?
Justin
What is there not to understand? Doom Eternal is designed for PC so making it work as good as it does on console is an achievement on its own.
Finally played it . Phenomenal game. Probably the most fun game I ever played
Doom Eternal is definitely the most fun I've ever had in a video game.
Amazing video, as always!
Looking forward to the next one.
Final Sins encounters with all the rooftops and building-hopping was just 😋
Yeah that level was just like "fuck it, let's just throw every single enemy into the arena". It was so fucking fun
The only problem with doom eternal is... get this... that it's not eternal
Impossible
Its sad the doom eternal didn't get a single award at the awards show
I'd love to see a Doom animated mini series, much like the one Diablo got.
Yes but in doom eternal there are way more unskippable cutscenes/ elevators.
I like how he talked about the tutorials and said it’s important for a casual player base because no one really talks that in reviews.
29:46 we could say that "the devil is in the details".
I deserve to be burned alive for this, I'm sorry.
not sure if being bured alive is a good or bad thing
Nice lore joke
@@CMrigdon satisfied?
It is time to extract armor shards from your flesh.
I’ve been playing this game for months now and have been improving too no doubt. However, I for one am yet to come across someone as dedicated to this game as you (I only recently discovered your channel). Respect man and this review vid of yours is certainly the best review vid I’ve ever seen in my 24 years of existence,
When someone asks me what is doom eternal:
eh... what he said
36:18 “this has to be the most violent and gory game ever made.”
I’m about to end this mans whole carrier....in 20 or so years
In my 30 years playing FPS games, doom eternal is probably my favorite single player FPS to play.
I agree with your point, but it makes me sad that The Woke of Us won GOTY
Easily my favorite TH-cam channel to go to. You're like a cat 6 demon destroying hurricane. Love your game play as it is the same way I play, I'm just not that good. Your reviews are easy to watch and the fact you don't complain about things like TH-camrs seem to enjoy doing has also got me to create a Twitch account to follow you as well. Thanks for your time and effort into making these for us. Get the silver and gold play button bro!
agree with yahtzee about the invisible walls. that was frustrating
damn. this perfectly reflect my thoughts on the game. great review!
This is the first game I've ever dedicated 200+ hours into. Probably the best FPS single player experience I've ever played.
Easy
When it comes to games like these as well as games ala DMC, I use the fighting games and Sonic games method to look for reviews: I don't trust mainstream media, I look for specialists for their input.
Glad you revied it like so. Thanks for giving it the justice it deserves.
inferior "gamer": this game is bad design.
superior game: YOU are bad design.
For a channel called "Upper Echelon Gamers", he definitely falls into the "Lower Incel Gamers" category.
Atleast Skilldown redeemed himself
@DarkSonic180 how so?
@DarkSonic180 in the beginning, yes. You're kinda forced to use the precision bolt and sticky bombs, but it opens up so much more after you unlock all the basic abilities like the dash and flame belch.
@Darksonic180 which is only really a problem if you're a shit gamer who hates learning in which case tough luck for you.
Thanks man.
I am a bit too late to comment on this video but you actually promoted this game in a sense that a lot of people played all modern doom games after this review : )
I am one of those people.
They also like to call the platforming sections "puzzles" like if that is a puzzle to you your brain has to be dead
hambone heck there wasn’t a simple platforming part that would be considered a puzzle in my opinion haha
platforming was easy but it gets old when you replay the levels and you just wanna kill things
I was so hyped fpr the game that when i finally got a propper computer and entered the first level i almost cryed :')
