  • On a Sunday morning, I received a distressing call from a remote village located nearly 100 kilometers away from Narasaraopet. Concerned about the situation, I promptly set off at 6 am to reach the farmer's place and provide the necessary assistance. As I arrived, my eyes fell upon a pitiful sight-a helpless animal struggling to move, its hind limbs completely immobilized. The creature was clearly in excruciating pain, evident from its abnormal gait and inability to flex its hind legs. This condition had persisted for a distressing four months.
Upon further examination, I diagnosed the animal with a case of patellar luxation, a medical term referring to the dislocation of the kneecap. It was clear that immediate intervention was required to alleviate the suffering of this poor creature. However, the village lacked the necessary medical equipment, including a trevis, to aid in the surgical procedure.
Despite the challenges presented by the limited resources, I resolved to proceed with a medial patellar desmotomy-a surgical technique that involves the selective cutting of the medial patellar ligament to relieve the dislocation. With utmost care and consideration, I ensured that the animal was properly restrained, making the best use of the available means.
However, as I prepared for the surgery, I discovered that there were two additional ligaments present alongside the crucial medial patellar ligament. Cutting any of these supplementary ligaments would lead to permanent lameness for the animal, compounding its suffering. With this knowledge in mind, I proceeded with extreme caution, ensuring that I accurately identified and severed only the medial patellar ligament in both hind limbs.
Despite the challenges and limitations I faced, I successfully completed the surgical procedure on both legs. As the surgery concluded, a sense of relief washed over me. The animal, once burdened with pain and immobility, now had the opportunity for a better life. With renewed vigor, it rose to its feet, gingerly testing its newfound freedom of movement.
Witnessing the animal's first tentative steps, I felt a surge of joy and fulfillment. It was a testament to the power of veterinary medicine and the resilience of these remarkable creatures. Through my efforts and the support of the villagers, we had managed to restore mobility and provide a chance at a pain-free existence for this suffering animal.
As I prepared to leave the remote village, my heart was filled with gratitude for being able to make a difference in the lives of those who depend on animals for their livelihood. The memory of the animal's newfound freedom and the appreciation of the villagers would stay with me, serving as a reminder of the importance of compassion and dedication in my profession.
