It’s not even just about the numbers JWP is producing, it’s the fact he’s actually a very good footballer & putting in great performances too. It’s a disgrace he isn’t included in the squad
And he's also one of, if not THE best set piece takers in the world atm. We are already good from set pieces, having him would make them so dangerous.
As a Liverpool fan I am a fan of jwp and what he can offer, id have loved to see us bid for him, what he can offer in set pieces alone is huge and potentially game changing, guy genuinely deserves a good England run especially over Henderson

Australian here, Mark is speaking total facts. England could be a genuine powerhouse of a 25 man squad, yet continue to "reward" either embarrassing club performances or coach favourites.

If it’s total facts, how come he didn’t mention anything about Rashford who has been in absolutely awful form? There is definitely a bias in the opinion. Sterling should be over Rashford but there was no point mentioned because he is a United fan.

What's most baffling is that Sterling was getting picked for the Euros and WC campaign when he didn't deserve to and was out of form. Now that he's actually playing well and deserves a place, he isn't getting a sniff. I just do not get what goes on in Southgate's brain

Absolutely. Just like the PGMOL there’s a certain mentality around protecting traditional English things, and your media plays a huge part in both. If the media was actually journalistic both institutions would get regularly torn to shreds or at least heavily scrutinized. Instead they by and large defends these archaic, backwards practices

As soon as Henderson went to Saudi Arabia, that was his international career done, in my opinion. To be considered, you must be playing at the highest level domestically. Occasionally, I know players are picked from the Championship, but there are too many players performing well week-in-week-out in the Premier League.
Henderson playing for England after his Saudi move is like asking a Professional Karter to jump into an F1 car and compete. There is no way he can be expected to step back up the same level as his PL teammates and play against the same level opposition.

Phillips is meant to be Rodri’s backup. Pep didn’t even trust him to play the Rodri role when the Spaniard was suspended, yet he’s always called up for England.
Roy Hodgson is the only England manager who said he would play youngers and actually did it to blood them for the future Southgate reaped the benefits of that but even with a great squad and won nothing
Raheem Sterling not being picked is the biggest farce! How on one hand does he say that Maguire and Phillips have always played well for England so they get picked yet Sterling who single handedly DRAGGED us to a Cup Final doesn’t get in the team? Because how I see it, carrying a team to a final is a lot more of a “Playing well for your country” situation than Maguire and Phillips combined!!! Unfortunately this is something I see even at work where you'll have people that deserve promotions or a certain job and yet the manager or company director would just pick one their mates or one of their fravourites regardless of whether they're performing or not.
On top of his squad selection even his tactics are wrong for me. Whenever we play in a tournament he will set up the team to not lose rather than setting it up to win. That's where you can see used to manage relegation sides as any top manager like a Klopp or a Guardiola would just set his team up to win the game. As a collective England as one of the best squads in the world at the moment. If he was more ambitious we win Euro 2020. Would have made the final of the World Cup in 2018 and I think would have got the final in 2022 too. If Southgate was Man City manager he would probably bench de bruyne for Phillips.

To my mind there is a disconnect between this England team and the supporters. This is down to Southgate pure and simple. This will not change until Southgate has gone and we can move on. At the moment it’s just a bore to watch England play. It should be something to look forward to but it’s anything but. I suspect the usual Euros in that we get through the group and then fail once we come up against anyone half decent.

I've never really supported England despite being english because the brand of football has always put me off. But still its really sad to see this current crop of England players being held back and constrained by Southgate. If they had a different manager I don't think its a stretch to say they would have won trophies by now.

I agree Mark. We had a whole week of Promo for TAA and his revolutionary midfield position in the last internationals. He then started him at right back, then played Philips over him in the next game. When a midfield of Rice, Bellingham and TAA would've been exciting to see.

It is getting to the point where if Southgate isn't gone there is going to be a generation of young English players that are playing elsewhere. Gordon been arguably Newcastle's best performing player this season a Euro U21 winner and player of the tournament with no hope of a call up. It's these type of players coming out of the u 21s that will go elsewhere if the family situation allows it. Livremento is another player touted for a move elsewhere because they don't see a progression from u 21s to full international in England. It's blatantly obvious and other countries are clapping their hands looking at family affiliation knowing Southgate is a clown

I remember in the last tournament when we really needed a goal so he brough on Sterling who had been out of the country and had not trained with the team for over a week, and he left Rashford out who was in the form of his life.
