VAR is back under the microscope with some ridiculous explanations from Howard Webb and Michael Owen. Mark Goldbridge reacts to some unbelievable news.
How many times have we seen corners end up in a foul because the striker slightly leens on a defender? This though is "subjective". I think what has happend is referees dont know what is a foul or not anymore. I believe in VAR and think it has done far more good than bad but what it has done is made referees complacent because they know the VAR team will either fix their incompetence or will take the blame for their poor refereeing. This isnt an issue with VAR per se its just that referees are being exposed more often for being awful. If you took VAR out of the game then you will get fans realising just how bad refereeing was before VAR was in place. Take the battle of Old Trafford where UTD players just resorted to kicking the Arsenal players off the pitch and diving for penalties. If VAR was in place then or later we wouldnt have had the injuries that the likes of Stoke and Birmingham deliberatly inflicted becuse it was getting "stuck in". No, VAR would rightly punish those teams with reds for their ankle breakers.

The refereeing is subjective by design to enable favoritism of City in particular. City owners are paying PGMOL referees in the UAE, it's as obvious as it can be.
We are already in an era of PGMOL deciding who should win or lose. Championships have been won, relegations have been achieved simply because of referees.
We are seeing TWICE as many red cards per game this season as were typical in the previous five EPL seasons. Who cares about the title? I want to know who is going to win the Golden Book! Go PGMOL FC! Go!
It's a foul all over the pitch - we talk about natural arm positions for handballs, the same applies here. Joelinton's arms are straight, his elbows locked out - no one jumps like that, that's an end motion of a push and if it isn't a push, 2 arms on Gabriel's back in a straight locked postion means he couldn't adjust himself to header the ball either
Almost every game every week we have to discuss the officiating. How does the PGMOL feel satisfied with the situation when they are the topic of controversary almost every game. Referee reform needs to happen, this is a multi-billion dollar league and this is unacceptable for the level of officiating. Thanks for always speaking out against these oppressive parties!
@@alette7 I respect your opinion of Mark but I respectfully disagree. The fact Mark has garnered a ton of views says more to me then him just making a living off the back of something important. That's the way of the world.
Spot on Mark. The PGMOL and some of the pundits and media are talking nonsense. It is about consistency and credibility, which are being eroded, and we're not supposed to challenge them. The officiating needs to be improved so thanks for so clearly and eloquently highlighting the issue.
Dermot Gallagher was on Sky Sports after the Arsenal/Newcastle game. He said that for him it was a clear foul, but another referee might see it differently. I'm sorry, but that is just not good enough. This is a professional sport not Landscape Artist of the Year! It should not be a subjective decision. There are rules, and it either is or is not a foul.
Howard Webb saying the Newcastle goal was defiantely the right decision shows you just how inept they are. The fact the the head of the refs thinks there was NO foul on Gabriel shows you WHY they are terrible att their jobs.
Everyone should give the Paul Tompkins article from a few weeks back after the Diaz goal fiasco... a great fact based deep dive that really opens your eyes to how City benefit from referees/VAR over the last 5 years and their rivals (even the coined LiVARpool) are the ones suffering more. Let alone the rest of the dubious calls up and down the league weekly... but the article really does (again with objective facts)... that something is certainly wrong at the PGOML. Just so happens to be sending officials to countries which own clubs in the division to really muddy those waters. Match fixing with officials has happened around the world, Italy twice, Spain... nothing to stop it happening here, only VAR actually helps cover it if it was happening. Great but long read, highly suggest everyone finds it and reads it.
Mark, I hope you read this and I know you’re not afraid to go after a topic. Refs are independently doing games in the Saudi League or Qatar for massive wages and then returning to their EPL gig. They may not be fixing games, but if certain teams don’t get the right calls, the thought that they won’t get another chance to earn that big money has to be in the back of their minds.
Completely agree with the point made, the less VAR is involved the better the game will be and the follow up of not knowing the refs name at the beginning or the end of the game. Both evident in the recent Wolves vs Spurs game. Barely any big involvements in VAR, the ref let the game flow the most i've seen from a ref this season and it made for a fast, end to end, exciting game of football.
I don’t fully agree, simply as I can see two ways for football to improve. 1st way is to go without VAR as much as possible, reducing it to only offside checks and violent conduct and the rest is for the on field officials to manage. 2nd way, is to increase the usage of VAR, this does go against the momentum based chat, however, we can see in other sports that have virtual assistants it doesn’t effect the game. The same could be done for football, my biggest comparison is rugby, which is a more complex game, with more players, who use VAR more or at least far more cohesively with the on field officials. It simply seems like the referees in the premier league don’t have a clear grasp on how they should officiate or get involved. This makes for the vastly inconsistent decisions/interventions by VAR, especially with what the on field ref gets told to look at on the monitor vs what he doesn’t get to see.
Even on the Chelsea game, Halaand held/pulled Cucurella first and they skipped that part...they were pulling each other to be fair. True Man city are benefiting with VAR it's always on their side. They want them to win the league
The biggest problem with VAR, is that refs feel like they have a 'safety blanket', so don't have to make sufficient on-field decisions, refs need to pull out their finger, stick with their decisions if they go over to the screen (Holjund was a horrendous one) and ref the games.
Very well articulated. You've pretty much summed up the way I feel about football at the moment. The inconsistency and the way VAR now hunts for reasons to disallow a goal are ruining the game.
Just this guy and Lawrence McKenna, that is it. No other commentry channel is worth even listening to. No contrarianism, no supporter bullshit, just sober analysis.
Loved it when you said they're all in it together. And you're right on no-one should know the referee but all we talk about after the game is VAR not the game itself.
Even for Haaland’s penalty award vs Chelsea compares to the Hojlund penalty giveaway, whereby the contact is far too soft for the players to go down, which has been suggested by the VAR at the Newcastle game…
on that penalty Doku slightly pushed the Chelsea player to make him collide with his own player ,city win ball back ,cross it ,haaland pulls Chelsea defender whose half his size to gain advantage, Chelsea player does drag haaland to the ground but for me the first 2 fouls take priority so Chelsea should have had at least one foul first ,so if we play at these rules why did city get penalty at United, just as goldbridge says
Quite funny how Hjolland on Rodri is enough for a penalty but Stones's pull back on Hjolland's shoulder is ignored. Also no one mentions Chelsea's gk taking out Jesus the same way Onana did vs Wolves. So odd how all the decisions benefit man city by opposition teams dropping points.
With regards to the push, How do you not push someone when you have your hands on them, feet in the air and moving towards the ball? And even worse than the comparison with the penalty, the ball being out of play. Why doesn't Owen and Co show the two videos and say these happened weeks apart. Why are there two different sets of rules? Man City, Newcastle always seem to get the calls now and no one is acting surprised
As someone who watches other sports with reviewing system like Tennis and Cricket, it seems pretty hilarious and sad that the biggest league in the biggest sport does not a proper review system. Instead of doing a bloody show "explaining their POV" (read as covering up their mistakes) they have to work on having clear cut rules for offsides, fouls etc and a strict guidelines for using VAR.
The worst part of the VAR situation is officials call nothing on the field, because var will take care of it right? But then VAR says it needs to be clear and obvious error, but it isn't being asked to correct errors it is being asked to officiate the game on its own. The refs are neutered puppies to the var overlords at this point too.
PGMOL are doing EXACTLY what they are paid to do - if in doubt, make the decision that will most benefit Manchester City. People - myself included - used to accuse certain referees (HOWARD WEBB) of bias to Manchester United, but it was nowhere near as bad as the last 5 years with every single decision in every single game going in favour of Manchester City. Liverpool got screwed against Spurs - without that they'd be top of the league. Arsenal got screwed against Newcastle - without that they'd be top of the league. And when City are playing, every single decision is made in their favour
What? Just this year we were robbed against united?? This season we were robbed against wolves because hwang who scored the winning goal deserved to be sent off, just this season united ROBBED wolves when onana didn’t get a red card, I don’t what your talking about 😂
The only thing missing from these videos are clips/images of what hes talking about for those that may have missed the games or other videos he references. Other than that 👌
Honestly what annoys me in particular with the Newcastle, Arsenal one is that they are like it’s the correct decision, when clearly they couldn’t come to a decision but that’s what VAR is there to do… the way I put it was it’s like hiring a painter to come paint a room he says yes he can do it, he proceeds to come to paint and only does the bottom half then says he doesn’t have a ladder to do the top… same thing with VAR saying they don’t have the equipment it’s like you can’t do half a job that you’re supposed to do so VAR shouldn’t do any of the job like the painter shouldn’t of taken the job on
Mark, good job one of the upright ones, I want you to go and watch Sakas disallowed goal against Burnley and compare the two push and why d goal was disallowed.
It can be extremely difficult to know how much force in a straight arm push at a quick glance. But the VAR officials are extremely quick to dismiss the possibility without looking carefully. The real problem lies not with specific individual VAR officials. The real sin is the VAR officials are stressed out because they have crap for procedures and crap for training. The result is they are rushing. They get this call wrong because they are quick to jump to the conclusion that they are done looking. That is why they get it wrong. They want to get it over with. Nothing is going to improve. The lesson I took from the Diaz goal against Tottenham is the VAR officials are stressed out performing the simplest possible VAR check. Is it any wonder they are confused and random when it comes to genuinely complex reviews? VAR has always been an accident waiting to happen. Is will continue to be an accident waiting to happen.
@@sambog2635 It does to anyone with a functioning mind. When you put your weight on someone from that angle you're not 'pushing' so much as stopping the person from getting airborne.
Does the PGMOL communicate any changes in the officiating that it makes mid-season? For example after the City/Fulham debacle did they say "we will be taking offsides and subjective offsides more seriously from now on..." if that is the case then you can at least know why they came to certain decisions.
“Disheartening” is a great word for what is going on with VAR. Also with Nation State ownership. I don’t have much these days. Some friends, my dog and football. Please fix this!
The problem is when liverpool complain about VAR so many man united fans complain that Liverpoool did. When it comes to officiating all teams and fans should be on the same side
@abmilzo- Liverpool complaining about decisions is rare as hens teeth as they hardly ever get a decision against them, and if they happen to get one against them, oh boy do we here about it!............they make up for it by complaining about everything else though.

Point is. The Hojlund one isnt any more foul than Joelinton on Gabriel. Quite the opposite infact. And if the answer from refs, is that its not "enough" for VAR to intervene, then obviously VAR shouldnt intervene on Hojlund one... Its the inconsistency Mark is talking about.
It's literally the referee/assistant referee and VAR's job to judge if they feel it is enough of a push in the back to give a foul. It's ultimately a subjective judgement based on what they've seen happen. That's not to say they do it very well but what exactly is he arguing here? That it is impossible to say it is or isn't enough of a push to make it a foul in which case he can't argue so black and white that it definitely is a foul or that only people who have been pushed in that very specific way can decide if it is a foul? Faux outrage nonsense.
They are literally destroying football. VAR could be so good and solve almost all the problems we used to moan about. Now, even Lineker is saying to scrap VAR, which isn’t the answer. We need a complete overhaul of how referees are governed and how the rules are made.
People need to lay off the refs, no need to be so pressed when they give a decision you don't agree with when the decisions even out for each team over the course of a season anyway

Spot on Mark. The PGMOL and some of the pundits and media are talking nonsense. It is about consistency and credibility, which are being eroded, and we're not supposed to challenge them. The officiating needs to be improved so thanks for so clearly and eloquently highlighting the issue.
Corruption is what it is
Really nicely articulated. Consistency is the major issue here and there is none of it game to game.
I wholeheartedly agree with you Mark.
That Jaws analogy 😂😂😂
I want to celebrate goals I don't want to celebrate decisions.
The thing is, I actually believe there was more consistency before VAR
So do I, I want it done away with and just use goal line technology for goals and ball out of play or not.
@@Eleventhearlofmars I agree. These officials are running the game
No, we just accepted it as honest errors ,With var we are no longer prepared to put up with it
Goldbridge makes a good point here - they are officiating games as one offs
Dermot Gallagher was on Sky Sports after the Arsenal/Newcastle game. He said that for him it was a clear foul, but another referee might see it differently. I'm sorry, but that is just not good enough. This is a professional sport not Landscape Artist of the Year! It should not be a subjective decision. There are rules, and it either is or is not a foul.
I think anyone saying it’s not an infringement is either lying or blind.
Howard Webb saying the Newcastle goal was defiantely the right decision shows you just how inept they are. The fact the the head of the refs thinks there was NO foul on Gabriel shows you WHY they are terrible att their jobs.
Its only right if all decisions like that get the same call. they dont -theres no consistency
Mark speaks for more football fans I suspect than ever Howard Webb and certainly Michael Owen will ever do.
Great job, please keep talking about this issue
Mark, I hope you read this and I know you’re not afraid to go after a topic. Refs are independently doing games in the Saudi League or Qatar for massive wages and then returning to their EPL gig. They may not be fixing games, but if certain teams don’t get the right calls, the thought that they won’t get another chance to earn that big money has to be in the back of their minds.
UAE also (wink wink)
It’s the UAE where they’re doing the games isn’t it?
Yes sorry.
Massive conflict of interest. shouldn't be allowed
this!!!
Noticed that VAR didn't even check Man Citys offside goal against Fulham but goes out of it's way to cancel out anyone else's borderline offsides
Yeah sure the Premier League, who pressed the 115 charges against us, is now rigging the league to help us win. Sure mate sure
@@DarkViperEUthen explain some of those decisions

That jaws reference was brilliant. Loved it😂
Completely agree with the point made, the less VAR is involved the better the game will be and the follow up of not knowing the refs name at the beginning or the end of the game.
Haaland let go and he still held on.
It all started by Haaland pulling@@victorypeter-wonighan361 , but i hear you
That was a classic case of 6 of 1 and half dozen of the other. Should have been play on.
If they give that as a pen, then there'll be pens on each game in the EPL
@sipholunga7487
**PL*
If you can't get the name of the league right you don't get an opinion.
Am an arsenal fan but i love the way u analyse football
Dr sports are way better
Loved it when you said they're all in it together. And you're right on no-one should know the referee but all we talk about after the game is VAR not the game itself.
Completely agree with you Mark. Spot on! 👏🏻
Spot on again Mark!
Could Michael Owen be part of the 3 players who decide if a decision was right or wrong? 🤔🤔🤔
You sir are a gentleman! You try to speak the truth no matter what.
no one speaks bout this anymore like you do, we really appreciate you using your platform mark! keep going!
I feel for Maguire. He was devastated about that disallowed goal.
Get rid of VAR
You are an absolute delight mate. Giving us the news, your opinion and with some humor. Keep up the good work fella!
That Jaws comparison was on point 😂
Your content is rich and objective. I love your show
Quite funny how Hjolland on Rodri is enough for a penalty but Stones's pull back on Hjolland's shoulder is ignored. Also no one mentions Chelsea's gk taking out Jesus the same way Onana did vs Wolves. So odd how all the decisions benefit man city by opposition teams dropping points.
“You are destroying the game lads, and ladies, ladies are involved also let’s be equal” 😭
But you right bro the inconsistency is ridiculous
Spitting facts again Mark..Good job..I love your content because of your objectivity.
With regards to the push,
How do you not push someone when you have your hands on them, feet in the air and moving towards the ball?
Absolutely spot on Mark👌
Well said Mark!
The worst part of the VAR situation is officials call nothing on the field, because var will take care of it right? But then VAR says it needs to be clear and obvious error, but it isn't being asked to correct errors it is being asked to officiate the game on its own. The refs are neutered puppies to the var overlords at this point too.
It's like VAR told them, leave them for us. You will mess up, you don't know the ploy. It's robotic.
This season we were robbed against wolves because hwang who scored the winning goal deserved to be sent off, just this season united ROBBED wolves when onana didn’t get a red card, I don’t what your talking about 😂
Well said Mark.
Brilliant Mark! Keep it up
I like how your not bias I’m big arsenal fan that was a joke that they gave that as a goal VAR is focked big up to you and your channel bro 🤜🤛
The only thing missing from these videos are clips/images of what hes talking about for those that may have missed the games or other videos he references. Other than that 👌
VAR every week.. every manager is scared to talk about their bad VAR system, there is clearly a problem! Good talk Mark!
Well Said again. Complete spineless copout from them.
Honestly what annoys me in particular with the Newcastle, Arsenal one is that they are like it’s the correct decision, when clearly they couldn’t come to a decision but that’s what VAR is there to do… the way I put it was it’s like hiring a painter to come paint a room he says yes he can do it, he proceeds to come to paint and only does the bottom half then says he doesn’t have a ladder to do the top… same thing with VAR saying they don’t have the equipment it’s like you can’t do half a job that you’re supposed to do so VAR shouldn’t do any of the job like the painter shouldn’t of taken the job on
Top, honest podcast…well done👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Mark, good job one of the upright ones, I want you to go and watch Sakas disallowed goal against Burnley and compare the two push and why d goal was disallowed.
The thing is, there wasn't force in the push - it was a case of him using 2 hands to prevent Gabriel from adjusting his body. So that's a foul.
Is will continue to be an accident waiting to happen.
what??? that makes absolutely no sense 😁😁😁
At this point, the best thing they can do for the public,is to keep their mouth shut 🤫
Yet if they do that, everyone would ask for an explanation into their decisions.

Spot on mark
I’m not sure about the Newcastle one but him saying the hojlund foul on rodri wasn’t a grab is crazy😂,and he keeps talking about akanji being offside when he literally tried to dodge the ball, but never talks about rashford offside goal last year when he tried to get the ball, like I get he’s a United fan but cmon you can’t be this biased.
Absolutely cracked up at that Jaws analogy 7:09 It actually does sound like how they'd discuss it, such is the farce of VAR & Co. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Apart from city you mean?
Nah the refs have been shocking and made decisions lacking of common sense all season. It needs to continue to be called out
