WASHING RAW SELVEDGE DENIM JEANS EARLY?! WHAT HAPPENED?

  • Raw Selvedge Denim Jeans are a garment that has not only built an entire community around it, but has also created a heavy amount of controversy. Raw denim jeans transform over time with wear and wash, and much of the community is determined to get the highest contrast fades possible, or in other terms, the highest contrast between light indigo to dark indigo on the raw selvedge denim jeans. This means that people tend to wait as long as possible to wash raw denim, and will do anything in their power to avoid having their selvedge denim touch any sort of water.
    But in my opinion, selvedge denim jeans are meant to be washed, their meant to be loved and cleaned as well. I mean think about it! Back in the old days, people weren't waiting 6-8 months before washing their old vintage Levi's, back when all they had was raw denim. They washed them as needed, and the still got the sickest fades! So that's why today I decided to experiment, and see what would happen if I gave an early raw denim wash to see how they would fade, and if I would still get and raw denim fades after the wash as well!
    Selvedge denim jeans do not come with rules. The only thing they promise you is that they're going to change and become something beautiful over time, and we should all embrace that, rather than waiting a year or a year and a half to give raw selvedge denim a wash, which inadvertently weakens the jeans anyways!

    Thank again for the selvedge denim knowledge brother. Was wondering if the same results apply to selvedge denim jackets and how do you go about washing them?

      Funny enough I have a video on this coming soon because one of my raw denim jackets is due for a wash 😅 Stay tuned my friend! Glad you like the content! 🙏🏽 Honestly, it will be my first time washing a raw denim jacket so we’ll be experimenting together 😅😅

      Highly appreciate that and look forward to it. Picked up my first 22oz big slub selvedge jacket from Unbranded and I'm on the fence on when to wash. Really want to go for that vintage style fade over the high contrast. Hope you have a great day brother! 🤝

      @@Anthony_D_333How do you like their jacket btw? I’ve been looking at them recently 👀 Also, in terms of a vintage style wash, I’d say go for about 65-90 full wears before the first wash, and then wash every 10 or so full wears to really bring out those blues! Hope this helps! 😁🫡

      I'm diggin the jacket more than I thought. Love the composition, color, fit, and weight of it for a type 3. I get western vibes from it (in a great way) even when I pair it with a polyester white hoodie, lighter colored jeans, and dark brown work style boots. Got it on Monday, but it inspired me to include more of a western look into my style. Maybe because I moved to rural Arizona. lol! Either way, always trying to have more fun rocking looks.

      Thank you so much my friend! I appreciate the feedback! 😁 They really brightened up a lot and they are definitely now much more akin to the indigo color I like. I hope yours turn out just as good or even better than mine 😁

    The wash also brings out the true texture of the jeans as well! When I washed my 🐘 11s for the first time and felt them I was like wow

    If you are looking for fades, my rule of thumb is initial soak and then don’t wash until fades set in. This way you know where fades are and can reset creases so that they don’t start to form new fades starting the whole process over. How long is that? Depends on jeans. Could be 6 months, could be year and a half. Right now I’m pretty much only wearing Lee and they are 1.5 before fades really set in. After fades set in pretty much wash them whenever.

    @TonySop 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I always do a quick rinse right as I get rid ride chemicals. I can tell you this will do little to nothing for the fade potential. But I do normally wait a few months to do my first real wash.

    What's your thought on the freezer method? I like the look of a gentle patina, but I've also thrown them in the freezer to preserve the indigo color.

    Hi, can you give information about stretching? Color / texture is important but what about sizing ? If for example I usually wear 28/30, you suggest going for 29/32 ? Or keeping same size ?
    Big thanks in advance!

    I washed my first pair after the second wear because I spilled something on them :) Machine wash cold water no soap, wore them until they dried. I initially tried running water on them in the bathtub but the dye was coming off unevenly and staining parts I didn’t want stained.

    • @AlejandroJomar
      @AlejandroJomar  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I really have to make a video on this because a lot of blogs talk about “spot cleaning” but it honestly makes the jeans look worse in my opinion with the uneven dye. I had to wash my Full Counts after the second wear too because I got chili oil on them 🥹 But they’re fading just fine after the wash. Hoping the same for you brother!

    Bro I just put my jeans in the washer, then low and behold I see this video. I tend to just wash my raws when they're dirty and at the same setting you do. Also believe it or not we have the exact same washing machine lmao

    I wonder what would happen if you just washed them repeatedly like people used to in the 60s-70s to get a low contrast light wash. True vintage style light wash denim instead of stuff that comes like that from the factory

      I had it custom made for me a little while back at a small shop in Miami 😅 I never made a video on it because I’m really not a jewelry guy, and idk a lot of viewers see me on the street so I don’t like to highlight the fact I wear gold necessarily if that makes sense 😅 The shop is called VIP Jewelers Miami. I’ve been worn a pair of Naked and Famous left hand twill 13.7 OZ raw denim roughly 25 times (6+ hours each wear). When should I wash them if I want a nice overall fade instead of a stark, dramatic fade?

    • @AlejandroJomar
      @AlejandroJomar  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a great question my friend! What you are describing are "vintage style fades" which I happen to enjoy very much. I usually wear my jeans for 3 months before a wash, and then after that initial wash, I begin washing monthly. Hope this helps!

    Actually love the way these looked after the wash! Super impressive tbh. I think the "NEVER WASH YOUR RAW DENIM" idea is a little silly and against the ideology of denim in general. If your denim is dirty, wash it. No one wants stinky jeans lol.

      Thank you so much for the love and support my friend! Yes I completely agree, even in my first go-around with raw denim 10 years ago, I was never "team no-wash." Then again, I've always liked a brighter blue and more overall fades. Glad you liked the video king!

    Great video, but please stop calling it a "jean". It is one pair of jeans (because it has two legs), so jeans is singular already. Jean is a beautiful french name but not a pair of denim trousers and in that regard it just sounds horrible to me :)
