Where do you think Suikoden Tactics ranks in terms of the series? Was I too easy on it? Too harsh?

i love the suikoden series and have owed all of them (meaning 1-5 and tactics)... Only two of the six games did i ever get rid of, Suikoden 4, which i beat but couldn't stand the main protagonist, the long and slow Ship rides, and the high encounter rate; and Suikoden Tactics, which i couldn't stand playing past the fourth or fifth battle despite me loving FF Tactics, Vandal Hearts 2 and Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together... I couldn't ever put my finger on what it was about Suikoden Tactics though that i didnt like.. I still own the original PS1 copies of Suikoden 1 and 2 as well as the original copies of the PS2 Suikodens 3 and 5. I've beaten everyone of these games multiple times and love all of them... I also own Final Fantasy Tactics The Lion Wars on PSP (though i did own and beat many times the original PS1 FF Tactics), Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together on PSP and beaten it as well(and i used to own the original version of this game on PS1 but never really got into it as much when owed this version) and Vandal Hearts 2 on the PS1 which i also beat many times... ive been a gamer for over 40 years and a hardcore lover of all forms of RPGs and Tactical games such as XCOM... i grew up along side the Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Breath of Fire, Mario, Resident Evil and Suikoden series' from their first games where Mario runs up rafters to save his girlfriend from Donkey Kong on the atari system... But im getting off track here, Suikoden Tactics, much like Suikoden 4, was a slow paced and dull game, that if i remember correctly, was a little grind heavy as well with steep difficulty spikes at the time I owed and played it... i just couldn't get into it...

I really loved this game - such a great story that filled-in so many loose ends from IV that I hadn't been aware were loose ends. It made me, and a lot of Suikoden fans, hope & wish that Konami would make a Tactics title involving the High East Rebellion...sigh...

That's crazy you say that because a Tactics game about high east rebellion has seriously been my dream game for years. I really want to see a proper send off for Viktor and Flik. I loved Suikoden Tactics too imo its the most underrated game of the entire genre, people that complain about it are usually whining about the difficulty but that's a good thing to people that are deep into strategy games

@@dextersbeard3472 You _can,_ but a familiarity with Suikoden IV would help with the various references and certain plot aspects. Plus, with Tactics being a direct sequel to IV, certain plot elements will be spoiled if you play Tactics before IV.
Missing III is fine, as chronologically III takes place hundreds of years later (and only around 15 years after Suikoden II, which is 3 years I think after Suikoden).

I love the battle mechanics, I think they did a wonderful job translating the Suikoden runes/elements, unites, and skill system into a SRPG. The weapon runes were way more interesting this time, and the additional mechanics like mounts and switching were great!
Would love to have had more optional difficult battles and some kind of teleport system for Obel Ruins (Manu, the S4 elevator maker, where you at?)

Even though I put this at the end of my fav suikoden games, it's still a really good game. The best thing about it was being able to recruit the hero from 4 with his true rune(The Rune of Punishment) in it's forgiveness phase. The story was pretty good and the tactics battle with the elemental color lines was fun.

I usually hate SRPGs, but I loved Suikoden Tactics and view it as a mainline entry in the series. Loved the elemental grid system, the Sindar ruins, the skill system, and how it expanded on some of the lesser characters in Suikoden IV that didn't really get much spotlight.

I bought this game pretty cheap a long time ago... but I have never actually played it! However, I do occasionally get to playing these old games that I picked up. As a Suikoden fan, I couldn't resist picking it up when I had the chance. Many of these old RPGs have only skyrocketed in price. Now, I just need to find Suikoden 3 and 5!

    • @medmuscle

Suikoden V has recently come down in value a tiny bit, but it's still pricey. Suikoden III is still pretty cheap. Oh, and don't forget about Suikoden Tierkreis on the DS if you are going for a full set in the English language.

I never played 4, so I enjoyed seeing the Island nations and the rune of punishment in action. As for the gameplay, it was fun at first but by the midway point it got super repetitive.
I really enjoyed how they made physical runes have 3 “spells” though, that was a fun mechanic that I wish had been used in S5. I also enjoyed the character portrait art and the music.
I would say it’s not essential, but worth at least a try.

This is the only suikoden game I never got around to playing. Planning to remedy that when I do full series play through after the remasters are released. its been sitting on shelf for almost 2 decades. I will say I actually do like the art styles and character models, I think they look good. The fact they are different from the mainline games work for me, since this was an offshoot that tried something different.

I really liked Suikoden Tactics a lot but I played it years ago when I was a kid. I'll probably replay it one of these days.
Just based on what I remember, I'll probably rank it 3rd or 4th within the series, definitely below Suikoden 2 and 3, and possibly 5

I would disagree with most of your takes. The combat was solid and required thorough planning to ensure success. I personally liked having to take every step into account and how each character should be used and with whom they will fight. I think the mechanics of the game made you select natural teams because of the elemental affinities. For some it probably took too much planning and time but when you plan your battles and finish the game without losing a single character, you dont need a platinum trophy to know you accomplished something. I wish Suikoden made another tactics game as i found it more enjoyable than many other games in the series.

I tried to love this entry in the Suikoden series! I enjoyed it but I never finished it. Permadeath is quite an issue for me in these kinds of games and I try to get all characters through the game alive. So whenever a member of the cast died due to my short sight, I reloaded my save and tried again. But the battles in the later sections of the game are sooooo long. Too long to try and try again, especially when a stupid mistake caused a character death a round or so before the battle is over. After I lost more than three hours to a single battle and still went out of this unsuccessful, I called it quits. The savefile still sits on my memory card, sadly waiting for me to finish the game. Which I don't think I will ever achieve.
Suikoden Tactics to me is an especially sad failure because when it came out we already head decent tactics games built into Suikoden II and IV. Tactics should have been a winner. Yet there it was losing me.

    • @emzkoe3904
      @emzkoe3904 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

The perma-death thing killed it for me too. The battles were a bit too long but I honestly could deal with that if it wasn't for perma death. Way too many hour+ battles that became moot after a weak monster just takes insane damage on your way stronger character and kills them... or you are just thing to level up some weaker characters and you get almost to the end of a long ass fight and one of them gets killed.

Not a bad strategy game with a challenging difficulty level . But I preferred more Tactics Ogre , Fire Emblem or Langrisser , if you wanted to play a tactical game , instead of role playing factor.
