Not sure what department this is but cities like Denver are putting trained medical and social work professionals in the field with access to rapid armed police response if needed to address this exact type of crisis. Much quicker access to the care level that people need and much less threatening to people that are experiencing an unarmed personal crisis -- like her. You saw how much better Bianca responded to her and how she helped keep the scene under control. This is an excellent direction for community policing. Bravo!

      I don’t think the guy administering the tests was very good at all, not only was that “follow the light” test overly prolonged to the point even I got pissed off with it, he did very little to deescalate the situation. There were a lot of different power dynamics at play in this interaction - and for someone who was having a manic episode and rapidly cycling due to emotional distress and the stress of the stop, they could have handled it differently.
      I understand that the snap judgment is to say “oh it’s Alcohol” or “she’s obviously high”, but it didn’t take long for me to see that she was quite likely telling them the truth in that regard and as such, their duty of care with how they conducted themselves should have changed and they all should have been on the same page. Some major retraining in that area is needed tbh.
      Not to mention that despite all the signifiers, they still fall back on drugs being the issue and stating that they think it’s highly likely to be some form of Hallucinogen. Pffft. I can hardly stand up to take a piss in that headspace, let alone drive a Goddamn truck!
      Last but no means least, I don’t know what the law is in America, but when she asked what she was being arrested for, her rights were ignored and they didn’t tell her despite repeated requests.
      Long story short, I get that the context we may be missing here is that they detained her for her own safety and to get her somewhere warm and safe like a Hospital to be medically examined prior to being allowed to leave, but it really didn’t come across that way in the video.
      It was quite a distressing video to watch tbh, and I hope she’s doing okay. Pisses me off the amount of people on here just laughing at her at her expense.

    I started to laugh but then almost cried when she said, sounding so distressed "I have mental health issues"! Because there are tons of people out there with psych issues that feel "crazy" and depressed and other negative emotions on the regular, and there's like little to no help for them. She definitely seems high AF, but drug abuse is an easier, cheaper, and more attainable coping mechanism than say family support, healthcare, medications etc. And I can't be mad at someone for wanting to use something to change the way they feel, when they probably feel depressed and hopeless every single day. Not excusing it! But sadly, I understand it.

    • @thisbish
      @thisbish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@FreelancerFreak That's somewhat true, and also not true. In my city, the free mental health services are extremely sparse and require you to jump through hoops to get. Not to mention you have to "qualify" for them. Services are so overwhelmed with people in need that there's a waiting list for everything, sometimes years out. State insurance will pay for psych meds, but not long term therapy, so they basically throw a box of bandaids at you and tell you to fix it yourself. There's private rehab facilities, if you can afford that, but we don't even have a real psych hospital. There's literally not enough help in our city. It took me 3 seperate in person appointments to get a short term tele-psychologist, and she spent 45 minutes a week teaching me breathing exercises. For someone with serious barriers, just having to make 3 seperate appointments to get to that point is nearly impossible. Free resources? You can talk to the counselor at the homeless shelter, if they're available right now. What will insurance cover? Pharmaceuticals prescribed by unqualified general care physicians, and some coping skills you could've have learned free from Tiktok. I mean no ill intent by saying this, but honestly saying "There are resources if you go find them" is a cop out. People aren't sick because there's NO resources, people are sick because the few resources we do have are just not accesible. It's much easier to shoot dope than it is to actually try, and honestly it feels better too. It's hard to want to get help when society makes you feel like you don't deserve it.

      Cops are not Uber indeed...but unfortunately they are often the ones who initiate these people's course change to correct help...and it ties up four or five officers.
      We cannot have equavelent Mental Health Units tasked with solely finding and assisting the plethora of people in need...that is just ANOTHER Government Agency that our Country would have empowered to Legaly find and detain for their protection and others. Enforce the laws...period.

      Exactly, it's sad that policies have been enacted in the name of empathy when they do just the opposite. It's difficult for even family members to get a mentally disturbed person help, much less an authority figure that has no history or relationship with the person. As if it's empathetic to "allow" someone to live freely in their mental disorder. 🙄
