Hilleberg Niak Tent Review - The ULTIMATE 3 Season Tent?

- Is the Hilleberg Niak the ultimate 3 season tent? The Hilleberg Niak tent is a 2 person tent that is of the highest quality. It's a proper backpacking tent at 1.7kg all-in. The Niak has one door and one vestibule but the door can be opened both sides or altogether.
The Hilleberg Niak is a yellow label tent which means it's their 3 season tent range. It uses a Kerlon 1000 fabric (basically a 20D Nylon Ripstop fabric) but retains the 9mm poles used on their red label 4 season tent range.
Personally, I love the internal space the Niak provides. I love the ease of pitching too. However, I'm really disappointed with the vestibule, especially for a 2 person tent. At this price point, you expect perfection. The ventilation should be much better for a 3 season tent too, simply adding a mesh door doesn't allow air to flow in and out of the tent like end vents would.
I did get a price to convert the door to a convertible solid mesh door. It was £125 to do sending the tent off to Scottish Mountain Gear.

I’ve had mine since 2019 (cost about £600) and I absolutely love it.
So easy to pitch, rock solid with correct pegging and guy lines although occasionally I’ll add extra guys. I also take a selection of different pegs such as Deltas and 9” Easton.
Loads of room for one and I can get all of my gear inside with space to spare but would be tight for two people.
Thank Andy for this video. I bought this tent twice and sold it twice. What's good: weight and very easy to set up, and great quality materials. What's bad: It was too small for me and my large dog. But the biggest problem is that mesh door, especially if you go to northern Sweden a lot in September. It gets too cold, you can't regulate the temperature like a Red Lab or Black Label Hilleberg tent.
Love your reviews,thank you.
Great review! I didn't know about the vestibule being able to open from either side. Feel super lucky that I picked mine up brand new with tags from a seller a year ago for less than $600 USD. Have been loving the tent so far.
I have this tent and for me it's excellent.tbf they do market it as a 1.5p tent not a 2p.ive used it all through winter unless there is wind blown snow because of how the fly is cut.yes you can feel the cold a little bit through the door but nothing major.i also have a set of 10mm poles for winter and that really does make it pretty solid.the room inside is great for 1 if your over 6ft it might be a bit short tho.the main downside is the price it's very expensive but the quality is outstanding.
It’s in their brochure and on their website as a 2P. Thanks for sharing your experiences 👍
It is a cracking shelter , I love the headroom, downside was the small vestibule, I could never cook in poor weather, agree with the door, a zippable solid door option would have been great, save you on the really windy nights, saying that, it’s a brilliant tent 👍
I like it. No tent is perfect, but I don’t think it would be too difficult to cut and neatly hem a piece of yellow material to stretch across that mesh door to give you a full or part solid door - very easy to do and could be attached by way of a Velcro tab at chosen points - gives you the option of leaving it at home if you know you’ll be out in heatwave weather.
Love the weight and pack size possibilities.
The price - mmm, would take a bit of saving up for, but guess it would last years if looked after, you know you’re getting a quality tent.
As said, I like it! Thank you for showing it 👍🏻
I got a price for a convertible solid mesh door and it was £125 sending the tent away to Scottish Mountain Gear. I nearly did it but the vestibule annoyed me too much, the height / depth / angle is just wrong. In my opinion it needs a cross pole at the top like many other tents. There are certain Hilleberg tents that I think need updating and this is one of them.
Yes, good points. Last time I went looking for a dream tent, I think it was the Rogan that caught my eye.
@@pootlingalong8928 The Rogen resolves all the shortcomings of the Niak, I sold my Niak in favour of a Rogen. The only shortcoming of the Rogen is the price which is eye watering. I bought my pre-loved and it remains highly loved in my ownership. I think the Rogen is the perfect 3 person 2 man tent. (search westonfront Rogen Review for my in depth review)
Great review Andy, and I have to agree with you. Fantastic tent, but way too expensive for what it is.
If Niak came out as a bikepack version with mesh inner as standard I'd be all over it without hesitation.
Just finished the Tour du Mt Blanc with the Niak. Worked like a charm, highest camp 2,200 m in bad weather.
I've had the Niak for a few years now, it's a great option for bikepacking. I can get the tent, mat and quilt in a handlebar bag and the poles fit nicely in my framebag. I still cannot fathom why it costs so much though!
Nice tent, but with a few flaws and the price is just stupidly too expensive...Good review as always Andy 🙂
Nortent Vern 1 for me good and solid and bags of room.
and it's half the price!
Sorry, but i didn't hear in your video information about ventilation holes in this tent.
Not sure what you mean? Are you talking about where the fly doesn’t reach the floor?
@@BackpackingUK nevermind
Silly not to have a solid inner door with full mesh screen, in my opinion. It stops me buying this tent.
100% agree! Scottish Mountain Gear will add one for £125 but that’ll make this tent over £1,000! I’ve a fair few people add 10mm poles and other mods. Again, well over £1,000 for a 3 season tent with one door and a small vestibule. Madness.
Id go for the Terra nova vault Duo 2 over this 100%
@@Rando-user-zm1fx does look a solid bit of kit mate 100%
Seriously? Its both heavy, expensive as hell, and made from crap materials.
@@northernswedenstories1028 heavy yes but definitely not made from cheap materials so stop talking utter 💩
@@user-gf4sn7jb4z its made from sil-pu. That is objectively a crap material no matter the price tag you put on it. No high end manufacturers with tents in the same price range as this tent use sil-pu because it weakens the fabric and degrades over time much quicker than sil-sil.
Over a grand , I’ll pass & stick to my TN pioneer compact 2
It's impossible to justify. I'll argue the case for red / black label Hilleberg's all day but this seems massively overpriced to me.
The prices for these are ridiculous
For that price and size it’s super heavy.
Too expensive for someone to use just ‘once in a while’, imho.👍🏾
Over a grand for a 1/2 person tent is way excessive, can't convince me otherwise
Tooooo expensive
A grand for this tent come on .. Extremely over priced brand
Is it better than a Soulo though? 🤭🫣
😱
@@BackpackingUK 🤣🤣🤣
To me it seems like a much better all-round tent than the Soulo, and what I'd choose of the two. If you need expedition qualities then the Soulo probably is a better fix, but any good three season tent will work for basic in winter use too.
@@frstesiste7670 I was just teasing Andy 😜
But a good question. I just don't get the Suolo
