This is horse shit. This movie is bulshit about Bruce Lee. I see why Shannon Lee is so upset and wants to sue them because it doesn't portray his her father at all. The fighting is bullshit to Bruce would never even fight like that. And then noise that he makes when he make some move doesn't even sound like Bruce lee.

@Loafy you do realize that mma(mixed martial arts) is more than just grappling yea, Helio knew a few different styles of grappling but that was still in that realm, whereas Bruce Introduced the idea of mixing several styles of martial arts both grappling styles and Stand up styles together...Now mind you Bruce was only one of the many who contributed to mma, He was just the most recognized and famous for putting out there. Either way you look at it though this portrayal of Bruce is very laudable at best, He was definitely cocking but he also had the skill and know how to back it up. I'm sure there were many people who could have challenged Bruce, however I dont think Bruce would have fought this way. He himself has even said he wouldnt ever get that fancy in a real fight. He would stress, how important simplicity is and how important it is to not waste energy. Bruce was a tactician, he wasnt just a fighter for show.

Fun fact (with some parts to taken with a grain of salt) : Gene Lobell (the real life inspiration for cliff) was a legendary stuntman but also happened to be a martial arts master (judo and wrestling I believe. And is often regarded as a pioneer of the sports and was known in some areas as “the godfather of grappling” ).They brought him in as Bruce Lee reportedly had the habit of actually striking the stunt men as Bruce believed it wouldn’t look realistic otherwise and there was very few people with comparable skills so their answer was to bring Gene in. There was a small fight but Gene and Bruce quickly became friends and even taught each other some of their respective techniques, and trained together. They also Worked on some other projects together before Bruce died (green Hornet being one of them if I’m not mistaken)and at the end of the day they respected each other deeply.

I heard similar stories . I worked with some friends of mine in the Bay Area on a construction site. They had driven up from LA and one of them was a grip in Hollywood. He didn't say anything about Bruce Lee but he did mention that Jean Claude Van Dam was more of a dancer than a fighter. That was in the nineties. They drove up in a fire engine red sixties era Cadillac convertible with a giant set of steer horns mounted on the front. He said most actors were sort of spoiled brats.

Lee historian John Little, who had access to all of Bruce's written material and organized them for the Bruce Lee Library series, has debunked LeBell's claims. The friendly encounter to deal with Lee's injuring of the stuntmen never happened, since he came on mid-season and the stunt issues were resolved by the first episode between Bruce and the fight director, Bennie Dobbins, who became a good friend and appeared in sparring photos with him. As for Gene becoming a friend and teaching Bruce grappling, well, in all of the diaries and day planners and notes and letters he's gone through, Little has NEVER seen a single mention of Gene. NONE. And none of Bruce's students recall seeing him or hearing Bruce mention him. Plus, his description of the school as having tatami mats and smelling of incense is just plain wrong; there were bare concrete floors and zero incense.
What it boils down to is LeBell was a pro-wrestler at heart who loved to tell tall tales and put his character over. Nothing wrong with that as long as you know to take what he said with, as you said, a big grain of salt.

Bruce Lee did actually talk about what would happen if he fought Mohamad Ali. He said that even with all his skill, Mohamad Ali would make quick work of him because he was simply much larger with more strength and reach than Bruce Lee.
Of course that would make for a less entertaining movie scene, but it's worth noting that the real Bruce Lee, while he talked a big game, wasn't as arrogant as this version.

This is actually a reversed parody of a real incident that occurred on the set of “enter the dragon”, where bruce lee supposedly stood up to a stuntman. But in the real story the stuntman was the loud-mouth, and bruce lee was brad pitt. This movie essentially reversed the roles. Edit: I realize there were multiple incidents which this could be based on, the most probable one being with Gene Lebell. I was referring to a different incident I had heard of where Bruce supposedly got frustrated with an actor that was not cooperating on set and put him in place.

It is taken out of context but he did work with gene labelle legendary stuntman/ judo badass who Bruce lee highly respected and later became a student of to learn grappling from and vice versa gene went to learn from Bruce.
This is the only thing we know gene labelle worked on green hornet as well.
And we know what gene labelle did to Steven seagal years later so if bruce acted up there's no doubt in my mind gene would of muddied the waters.

According to LeBell, Lee was a working stiff on the set of The Green Hornet but was kicking the shit out of the stuntmen. They couldn’t convince him that he could go easy and it would still look great on film. The show’s stunt coordinator, Bennie Dobbins, needed a ringer to deal with Lee, so he called in Judo Gene.
LeBell says when he got to the set, Dobbins told him to put Lee “in a headlock or something.”
So LeBell went up and grabbed Lee. “He started making all those noises that he became famous for,” LeBell said, “but he didn’t try to counter me, so I think he was more surprised than anything else.”
Then LeBell lifted Lee onto his back in what’s called a fireman’s carry and ran around the set with him.
“Put me down or I’ll kill you!” Lee screamed.
“I can’t put you down or you’ll kill me,” LeBell said, holding Lee there as long as he dared before putting him down, saying, “Hey, Bruce, don’t kill me. Just kidding, champ.”
Back on his feet again, Lee didn’t kill LeBell. Instead, Lee recognized that the lack of grappling was a deficiency in the Jeet Kune Do style of martial arts he was developing. So Lee trained with LeBell for a little over a year with LeBell showing Lee armbars, leg locks and takedowns, and Lee schooling LeBell in kung fu kicks.
After training with LeBell, Lee incorporated grappling moves into his film fighting. He finishes off Chuck Norris with a chokehold in Way of the Dragon (1972) and beats a young Sammo Hung with an armbar in Enter the Dragon (1973).

    • @doublep1980

@Joe Dick Seriously? Every movie he releases has some BS controversy going on. Inglorious Basterds had some people whining around, because he supposedly ''made fun out of WWII, the Holocaust etc.''
Django Unchained, had Spike Lee getting his panties in a bunch, because they used the ''N''-word in a movie that took place during the old South/slavery-period.
Pretty much every other of his movies,is accused of ''glorifying violence & being sexist'' bla bla bla...
In reality, he's a hack, who can only rip-off older, better movies. ''Reservoir Dogs'' has main plotline & entire scenes,ripped-off from Ringo Lam's ''City on Fire'', just to name one example.
So, for this movie, he couldn't piss off the black community anymore (not in the current politically correct climate), so he he decided to piss off the Asians and turn Bruce Lee into a bad SNL skit.

I watched the movie often, I have it DVR'd. I believe they had already made the point that he was tough. Of course they could have done other scene with somebody else. In the scene , the well trained dog helped considerably.

I think what a lot of people miss about this scene is that it's not supposed to be an accurate portrayal of Bruce Lee. Per the title of the movie, this is a deliberate parody of how *Hollywood saw* Bruce Lee. The other thing to keep in mind is that Cliff Booth is a fictional character (that Brad Pitt plays him does make it harder to remember this) and therefore can be as skilled a fighter as Tarantino chooses. Tarantino himself stated that while he didn't believe real-life Brue Lee would lose to Brad Pitt, Hollywood Lee *could* lose to Cliff Booth.

    • @miked1869
      @miked1869 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The cinematography is indeed great - but even though this looks like one 4-minute shot, I suspect it may not have been in reality. It's fairly easy to stitch shots together now and make it look seamless. The new Sam Mendes movie, 1917, is two hours long but meant to look like a single shot all the way through.
In this scene, there's a fairly quick camera pan at 2:33 - that looks like a stylistic choice, but it's also a popular way of disguising digital splices (also seen in other movies that boast 'long' takes, like Children of Men and Suicide Blonde).
I'm not saying this wasn't all a single take - just that it may not have been.

Look at some of the stunts Michelle Yeoh did back in the day. The scene where she’s swinging off the side of a bus. @@leylandkennedy35 Not exactly true. He wasn't unbeatable, but every time he encountered adversity or saw weakness in his approach, he would adapt and completely redefine it. At first he had no idea how effective grappling could be until he encountered grapplers. That isn't to say he wasn't talented or fit, but he was human like any of us, and if he were brought to the present with no time to train or adapt to what we have learned in MMA, and had him fight MMA, even in his weight class, he would likely lose to many of the greats. However, it he did have time to learn and improve upon what we have learned, I have no doubt he would have make an amazing counter striker which could dominate multiple divisions.
