Luv it… helps inch me toward the dream. I am doing ARC Las Palmas to Grenada as a crew member next month to “test the waters” ….. next step is around the world. You may want to consider the cost of boat insurance plus storage of the boat while you own it and don’t live on it. I’m pretty happy when I’m spending less than $1.70 (USD) per litre of diesel here in Australia. David, thanks for the video. Question, why do you put depreciation in the cost of the trip? Wouldn't the vessel depreciate no matter what you are doing with it. Plus, are the used boats really depreciating lately. Seems like boat cost (values) are staying high. Thanks again !
Hi Douglas. Thanks so much for watching and especially for taking the time to comment! There are so many ways to look at these numbers that I just chose the one that applies to my situation. Whalen speaking to almost any manufacturer I was surprised to find that the first question they asked was, “What is your project?” This leads me to believe that an increasing number of buyers are retirees who set out on a new purchase with a specific “project” in mind, like a circumnavigation, for which they specifically buy the boat. If you look at the Oyster World Rally, and Oyster’s brokerage listings, you will hear this story over and over. People buy the boat to do the rally and then sell it afterwards. So I included the depreciation as I will not own the boat for this project until shortly before the rally and I have a specific ownership period in mind. Unfortunately yacht ownership has not been a constant element of my lifestyle lol, so there will be a calculated cost to the money I spend to make it happen. If you are blessed with long term ownership of a yacht that is suited for this kind of venture then you can just back the depreciation out of the spread sheet…while I try to control my jealousy lol! Assumptions look pretty valid to me- with my one challenge being maintenance.. I suspect buying an older boat you save on depreciation but spend more on maintenance as things are a bit older..

I assumed that there would not be much difference between news and 3 years old, but the next video in this series is the Oyster World Rally and I had to go to seven years old to hit a number that I might consider. For a seven year old boat I doubled the maintenance. Thanks for watching and espy for commenting!
