Thanks for being so clear and concise in your instructions and showing everything step by step. We started a mini-farm about two years ago, and I’ve also started trying to learn to build things. (Usually hubby’s department) I have trouble processing information and have watched many DIY build videos over the last two years. This is one of the best I’ve seen. I set out to make one today. My poor horses. I had a scrap piece of 4x4 laying around, so I used my tablesaw and cut a V down it, then I used that V to hold the plexiglass in. It worked like a charm and was easier than what you show here.
Yes sir, a table saw does a fine job as well. We made this video for folks who dont have or dont know how to use a tablesaw, but both ways work great!

The same question being asked is almost a certain indication that I failed to address that thoroughly enough so I will take the rap for that one. But I definitely agree that people tend to arrive at the same question an extraordinary amount. And you will receive no argument from me that we are indeed a dumb animal brother (for all the reasons).

Shane, your approach to the same observation is much more healthy and positive. I made my comment from a place of darkness and selfishness. I am retired a SFC, with a bucket full of turbulence. I have had an epiphany recently, the entire world I loved collapsed on me, breaking me completely. The good news is that that breaking open spilled all my contents onto the floor, enabling me to see what was hidden and unclean in my character and soul. I will add this point of view you have expressed about this being your failure, it makes total and healthy sense. Thank you for responding wisely and inspiring a mind and soul on the mend of how one should conduct themselves.

You have a very cerebral insight, and being a retired SFC would indicate that you have a proven pattern of strength, leadership, and common sense. @@AHandleOnThings I see the answers about the plexiglass but I still have questions and since its not working for some people commenting here, maybe the angle matters? It has to be clear plexi? So the flies hit it at some speed cuz they don't see it and then it knocks them down into the soapy water?

I use a similar method with a blue hard hat, but I cover it with plastic cling wrap first. That way clean up is as easy as pulling the wrap off and starting over. A shower cap would work too if you can find them cheap enough. Also a note about Tanglefoot - use the bucket of it, not the spray on version. I have had terrible luck with the spray on. Almost like the aerosol adds a smell the flies don't like.

I haven't had the best luck with the spray on tanglefoot either... The flies get wayyyy better stuck on the thicker layer of material.

Excellent descriptive video, you did a great job teaching. One question, why is the plexiglass needed? Please let me know!
CLEAR plex/acrylic is there (or more like visually "not there" so as the flies fly by the tub the SMACK face first into acrylic and then get diverted down and into the soapy water, as they won't just go and land in the water on their own. Kinda like a "clear net" that catches/diverts them down and into a good drowning. Other catch (and I believe he mentioned) is that you'll need to keep that clear acrylic as clean as possible, as if it gets dirty it becomes almost like a solid wall that they'll see and flay around. Kinda like an old Looney Tunes commercial where they put up a fake painted or clear wall to run face first into!!!!
Sorry I just do not get it. Why do you need the plexiglass at the top. If the flies are attracted to the water will they just not drown? Nice video though with straight forward instructions and showing how to do it

The flies are not attracted to the water, they are attracted to the black color of the structure and the heat it will pick up from the sun shining on it.
The plexiglass helps guide the flies down into the water where their doom awaits.
Flies rarely land on water without a lot of coercion.

I love the simplicity! I'm going to build one this weekend, but I just have one question... How often should the water be changed?

Changing the water will be a thing your nose tells you about. It will vary depending on the time of season and how bad your fly problem is. Usually well over a month.
The best thing to do is get a kitty litter scoop or similar to use to scoop out the piles of flies you will catch that will help you to have less water changes. You can just toss the flies in the trash. If you use the flies for fertilizer you may wind up with an unwanted hatch.
The water will evaporate at different speeds depending on your weather. You should find yourself ADDING water much more often than changing it out.
This is a very do-able project! Have fun with it and be sure to let us know how it goes for you!

The v-shaped plastic keeps birds out and very effectively directs the horseflies into the "soup".
The dark color does attract the horseflies. I suspect it might be a combination of the color and the solar gain the color causes the boards to pick up. The darker color would make the wood warmer and maybe give a more believable heat signature?
I dont know for sure, but I do know this thing has been a fly killing machine!

Well good job on building horse fly trap, but is there a before and after video showing that your contraption works? I need proof, no disrespect intended!
Do you have any recommendations for regular flies at my barn? I have the ranch fly catchers, the hanging bags with attractant, and fly predictors but the flies are still a real problem. We haven’t seen many horse flies. It’s the regular flies and little black biting flies that are driving my horses crazy. Thank you!!

You can try the same trap but add in a goodly amount of sugar to the water and soap concoction.

Well, I was pretty skeptical. I tried a couple of other DIY designs and they didn't work. My vet has a "brought on" horsefly trap that works exceptionally well. However, at $350.00 + $49.00 shipping, they are out of my price range. So for ~$70.00 at Lowe's I bought all materials for your design. IT WORKS. The weather was hot, and horseflies were bad. I built the trap and the weather cooled. Not to worry, I've killed 20 horseflies in the past 3 days. I'm already seeing relief for the old pasture princess. BIG, thanks for sharing.

You never explained how it works! What draws the flies (other than "dark colours")? And what purpose does the plexiglass serve?
Is there any reason you can’t apply the heat on top of the panel rather than from underneath?
It seems, once softened, gravity acting on the softened plexiglass will accomplish the same thing- just more easily.

I have more deerflies than horseflies where I am because I live in the woods, but my friend who I made the trap for is in the open country where the horseflies are bad like yours.

Depending upon attraction areas such as ponds you may need more than one, but every situation is a little different.

I dont, however, I live in the land of the insane mosquito as well and the best solution I have arrived at thus far to take back my lawn (situated in the middle of a bunch of wooded acres with lots of water in the vicinity) is the bottle of bug stopper that is made by Cutter. It is called "Cutter Backyard Bug Control" and while sadly it is a chemical option, it is applied by sticking the bottle on t he end of your garden hose and watered onto the lawn so you can keep it off of your garden, fruit bushes, etc.
It works AMAZINGLY well (unlike the similar product by other brands that I have had no luck with)
and it lasts for WEEKS.
Seriously, this stuff gave me my yard back. Even after dark I no linger donate blood to the mosquitos anymore.

They fly into it, or try to fly UNDER it and they wind up in the soup!

What about using real glass?
Hello. I'm not getting what the plexiglass does to trap the horseflies. I know the Dawn in the water will kill them. I used Dawn in a sprayer to kill wasps. I have no horses, so do I need the plexiglass? The horseflies attack me.
Horseflies will normally fly over what they are about to land on so in theory the horsflt will fly over the bucket running into the plexiglass which will push it down Into the water also why it's at an angle.

The wood is what holds the plexiglass in place. The plexiglass guides the bugs down into the soapy water here they finish up.

The plexiglass guides the flies into the water below where they encounter the water and soap.
Otherwise, you would be just hoping for the flies to try to land on the water and that would reduce your effectiveness by a whole bunch

Video was great, but I built the trap (which was relatively easy) and it only captures Japanese beetles. Still getting harassed by horse flies at the pool. Any ideas?

Anyone put this to practice? What attracts the flies to the trap? Just trying to make sense of it. Why plexiglass?
just made the exact same thing and 2 weeks later only caught 10 or so. not overly impressed. Have it sitting in direct sunlight near the pool. first few days i thought i made it wrong but i did it the exact same way he did it. only difference is the plexy glass has a 7.5" bend vs an 8" but I cant imagine 1/2" makes that much of a difference

I use water & dawn soap in a spray bottle to get rid of wasp nests on the shed.
Saw a stink bug and sprayed it with the solution. It died in seconds.

I like to keep a spray fertilizer bottle (the kind that attaches to the hose) loaded with dawn.
I then spray the diluted soap onto the HUGE batches of boxelder bugs that show up on my trees in the spring. It is like a massacre!
It also works great for tent caterpillars!
And it is WAYYYYYY less toxic than the alternatives!

lol we had wasps move into our coop, a swarm of them!! Had to be over 60! I mixed peppermint (like the candy - I didn't have anything else peppermint lol) and a ton of vicks vapo rub in a bottle of water and they dropped so dead!! hahaahah! Never returned either!
Mine won’t work! I don’t know what I did wrong! I thought I had put too much soap in it but I don’t know! It’s also next to a fly trap that’s catching so many flies and stinks. I’m so bummed!

The main things that can be problematic are the depth of the water... Fill the basin with water and some soap nearly to the top. The amount of soap usually isnt an issue, more is typically better but I have had great results with just a little soap too.
Another possibility is that your other trap is just too alluring and all of the flies are getting that first.
Try separating the traps by 20 feet or more and see if that changes your results!
Be sure to let us know! I cant say that anyone has ever had one not work that I know of so I am very interested in what the trouble is!

I have a different fly trap - and it said sometimes you can put it up and get nothing, but then you move it over 10 feet and suddenly you're catching flies! It really has to do with their line of sight from where they are coming into your field/pasture. So try moving it to different places
I don't know how much difference it makes, but on the list of materials in the first part of the video, you list 2 @ 1" X 3" boards, but when assembling you say they are 1" X 4" boards. Also, when laying the acrylic sheet down, you do show or say which side is the 28" or the 30" when assembling - or which sides are to be horizontal / perpendicular to the boards?

Ah, I think I get it. The sun has to be out for this to work. If you live where it rains a lot and is cloudy, it may not work very well. Or if you put it in the shade of a building, probably won't work either. ??

I built this, but mine did not work either. Horseflies attacking me like crazy, none going for the trap. It's been out for 4 days now. Not a single catch. I sure wish I knew what I could do to make it work.
The typical things that I have heard from folks who are having trouble with getting performance from it are placement, type of soap (I suggest common Dawn dishsoap without a bunch of scents and such. Also be SURE to paint the crossbar ( the part that you attach the plexiglass to) BLACK. The flies are attracted to the dark color!

@@AHandleOnThings I am using Dawn soap, the tub is black and all the wood is painted black as well. The horseflies seem to be attracted most to the windows and sliding glass door of my house, I am going to try moving the trap in front of my sliding glass door to see if that helps.
@@darrenmvtube be sure to put it in a sunny spot, that will cause it to heat up. Also, being close to a water source is a good idea as well, since they typically stay close to water.

I bought mine at Menards. ITs a big box hardware store. I would expect Lowes or Home Depot to have a similar item for a price close to what I paid (about $30)
