  • This online talk was delivered on Tuesday 9th February 2021 by Aileen Ogilvie (Perth and Kinross Council). The talk looks at Gaelic-speaking people in old Perthshire, which once encompassed Callander.

    Worth noting that the Education (Scotland) Act 1872 made all education mandatory between the ages of 5 and 13, but at the same time introduced physical punishment for pupils speaking Gaelic, and effectively banned Gaelic Medium Education. It wasn't for over 100 years that GME was ever seen again. I think that might be one of the reasons Gaelic isn't as popular anymore.
