At the Battle of the Clans, Clan Chattan fought against another clan on the North Inch in Perth. Some say their opponents were Clan Kay. Others say different. Scottish history tour guide, Bruce Fummey takes you to the grave of the chief who led Clan Chattan on that day to get to the root of the story

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Don't know if you've covered this bit of history it's the last clan battle fought in Scotland between the Gunns and the Sinclairs in Caithness, now I was married to a Donald Sinclair from Caithness who has passed away but he told me of this battle. I researched it for my daughter who is a lover of Scottish history and the Sinclairs got drunk the night before the battle on whiskey its said, and were so hung over they lost the battle. I can't really recall the whole story but my daughter wanted this for a talk she had to do in her English class and I'm not sure what happened to the report I made for her. I would love to see this narrated by you in a video from Caithness where I have not been for so long since the death of my husband but holds fond memories for me

Bruce - just discovered your channel and it's a blessing to anyone interested in Scottish history and especially those with Scottish ancestors. I subscribed immediately!! I was born and raised in the U.S. but from the time I was a wee lad my dad drilled into me that we had Scotts blood in us and he was immensely proud of that fact, as am I. One of my fondest early memories is attending a Highland Gathering in California with my dad and that started my lifelong love of Scottish music and culture -- massed pipes and drums swell my chest to this day! I had the great privilege of standing on the shores of Loch an Eilein in 2015 during my only visit (so far) to my fatherland, and I sensed a tremendous connection to the country and the people I've only heard about through my father and what I've read in books. I feel through and through that Scotts blood runs through my veins, and that I'm a displaced Highlander at that! Thanks for making such entertaining and enlightening videos - your talent for story telling is superb. Cheers, Rob Shaw.

I recently (like 2 1/2 months ago) watched a video of yours and instantly knew I had to go back to the beginning to watch them all. I just finished this video, I was happy to hear of Clan Chattan and the MacPherson’s/McPherson’s as just last week I discovered my 6th great grandfather was a MacPherson/McPherson born in Inverness in the 1700’s, naturally the search to lean more has commenced, so just to hear the MacPherson and Clan Chattan names was really neat for me. Anyway, thank you for all the great content, I really enjoy learning about my ancestors homeland!!

It’s the first mention of Davidson history I’ve come across, apart from great grandad, who is listed as a baker/grocer, Kirkmichael parish in the 1850 Scottish directory of goods & services - finding that listing was fun enough, although I can’t figure out where the actual bakery was located. @Betty I am aware my wife surname is likely a result of this....However, in this case I am not absolutely sure of status, a birth was recorded and the child was acknowledged by the father, and this was "post" abolition (although that may not mean anything given it was not abolition for existing slaves until decades later). Her family owns a lot of land, but again that could be because of land redistribution as likely as it may be from inheritance. Regardless the fact remains, however gruesome the origin, my wife's ancestry includes Scottish and she was curious of the area of where her Scottish ancestor came from.

Ah so you finally got around to a story about one of my clans!(MacIntosh) Very cool story this one! Especially about how Clan Chattan was actually a union of clans which proved to be a powerful force when battle time came! Also cool that Clan Shaw came about by promising an act of caring for another's family. I sometimes wish that the other clans had also learned that unity in caring is the key to true strength. But nay, it would've put too many cattle thieves out of business!

As a 4th-generation melting-pot Canadian, my Scottish ancestry has always been important to me (especially since my wife is half Irish with family from the Ulster area!). A few years ago, I took up the genealogy work my father started in the 80s and finished tracing my bloodline back through to the 9th century, including many notable Scots from MacDuff to Aeneas Shaw, for whom the Oakhill area of Toronto is named, and even Seath Mor himself! When I began transitioning and changed my name, I needed to leave my entire given name behind for many reasons, and I took up Shaw again as my Surname.

The last battle that clan Taylor ever fought in under their own name is recorded as being in the battle of the clans on the North Inch. They are a sept of clan Cameron. Love your videos and the stories of the history of Scotland, definately on my bucket list to travel there.
I'm curious about the coins that were on the stones of Seath Mor's grave. Are they left by visitors to placate the ghost? Or (like with fountains etc) people thinking it will bring them luck?

In 2009 myself and my wife attended the Gathering of Clan Chattan, the 400th year anniversary of the Confederation. I was smartly schooled that the 'C' was silent and the name was pronounced "clan Hattan', my last name unchanged since Mark Hattan arrived in Virginia 1777.

So what this was really all about was a morality tale about not getting stoned in this part of Scotland. Quite simply it's hazardous to your health, but it was a great story, well told.

I'm loving your videos ❤️ Do you know something about the history of the MacNairs? I managed to find out they were a sept from the MacFarlanes, but is difficult to make propper research without actually going to Scotland. I'm 90% sure my family is decendent of the MacNairs but we changed the spelling of our name to Nery. Just dont know how we end up in Brazil yet...

I love your videos but this is the first time that I hear you speak Scottish Gaelic. Are you by any chance a native speaker? I have been studying this fascinating language for a while ever since I came back from Edinburgh in 2016. I have recently taught a course called "forgotten literature" in which I mentioned Scottish Gaelic poets.

Before the Mackintoshes made toffee, they were making trouble with other clans, especially Clan Grant. Rob Roy helped his Siol Alpin kinsmen Clan Grant to defeat the Mackintoshes and burn their Black Mill after Grant's water supply was diverted by the Mackintoshes to power the mill.

I was always of the belief that the majority of those fighting against chattan was mostly clan McMillan. Then after the defeat were put to flight ending up at Murlaggan on Loch Arkaig with their Cameron allies.
