  • This talk was delivered by Dr Rebecca Jones (Historic Environment Scotland) on 13th January 2020 as part of the Callander's Landscape winter series. It looks at the form and development of Roman camps across Scotland, with some focus on Bochastle near Callander.

This was a brilliant presentation. The Roman presence in Ayr wasn't found under a Tesco... but when they were doing some rescue archaeology on the site of the New Ayr Academy in what was the Craigie Estate in Ayr.

Wonderful presentation. I have learned so much watching that. The camp at Bochastle near Callander looks as if it might have been quite convenient for the railway! You do wonder if the Victorians knew what they were digging up.

Very interesting... Roman excursions into the Highlands fascinate me. You might be interested to know that Marcus Aurelius apparently camped near Piestany in Slovakia.

There’s a town in West Lothian called Roman Camp. Strange place with an atmosphere to it.
