    I made it my mission to show the larger Elder Scrolls community why Daggerfall is worth playing despite its age, but what about those who simply cannot get into it even after trying.
    There will always be gamers who are used to a certain style of game and struggle to go backwards, it’s why some Morrowboomers can get a bad wrap for how preachy they can be toward fans who have only played Skyrim; and not wanting to sound like them with Daggerfall, I will say that I understand that for some, older games just aren’t for them.
    What can these people do then? Well, a modder known as Oracus0 has come up with a solution. Skygerfall is the result, a mod that valiantly attempts to recreate the Main Quest of Daggerfall within the Creation Engine.
    This was possible through the hard work of Oracus0 combined with a huge compilation of mods created by the Skyrim modding community, even utilising models from The Witcher series, with permission from CD Projekt Red of course.
    Ports of older Elder Scrolls titles into the newer engines aren’t something new, but Skgerfall does have the accolade of being the first publicly downloadable one to successfully recreate an older Elder Scrolls game in Skyrim - although it had made a lot of sacrifices to make it possible.
    So the question is, from a Daggerfall fan, is Skygerfall a decent enough replacement for those for cannot play Daggerfall, even with all of its enhancements? That is what we will be finding out in this video.

    That guard at 4:07 doesn't seem like such bad voice acting. I mean sure, the actor is just reading his script and seems like he's putting zero effort into it, but it seems kinda fitting for the situation.

    regarding the overworld for Daggerfall feeling way smaller than Skyrim despite apparently being over half its size- you're definitely right that it's the flatness of the map
    I replayed Skyrim for the first time in several years, a few months ago, and I realized for the first time how small Skyrim really is... but its world is skillfully organized to obscure lines of sight among major landmarks; if you get climb to the very top of the throat of the world you can legitimately see every single hold in Skyrim

    Funny enough I actually love the notion of taking a character from this Skygerfall, through Skywind, Skyblivion, and finally Skyrim, considering that's basically how I play the games already. I essentially created a character with the sole purpose of having a backstory to excuse why he exists from the time of ESO all the way through Skyrim.

      Out of curiosity what sort of backstories do you use to explain why a single character can live through multiple eras? I love to roleplay so I'm hoping you'll give me a couple ideas lol

    • @TheNN
      @TheNN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@conmereth Well in my own character's case, I justified it in three primary ways:
      1. He's a vampire (or rather, becomes a vampire by choice). Aundae in case you're curious.
      2. He's a member of House Telvanni (and a Dunmer), which is more tolerant of vampires as such.
      3. He tends to keep his 'head down' as it were. He doesn't draw too much attention to himself over the centuries (aka I play with mods that either alter the main quests in the games, or allow you to skip/ignore them).
      In short, he's a character "in" the Elder Scrolls, without being the "hero" of those games. Now ESO you don't really have much of a choice, but I just hand-wave that away as just pretending that most of what I do in that game is non-canon to his actual story; and what I DO count as canon, I come up with alternative reasons for it.
      For example, in Skyrim, my character is *NOT* the Dragonborn. But he *is* powerful enough he can fight dragons one on one and come out victorious due to being a powerful sorcerer and vampire who's (at that point) over 1,000 years old.
      There's a lot more to it than that, but that's the short of it. Hope it helps. :)

    • @HickoryDickory86
      @HickoryDickory86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@TheNN Okay, so you're not the Hero of Kvatch and, thus, meet yourself in Skyrim. Makes more sense with your approach.
      Then again, the Madgod managing to meet himself for Daedric quest wouldn't be out of the question, all things considered... As Haskill says, "Praying to yourself, My Lord? That's not a good sign. Or perhaps it is, Prince of Madness and all." 🤣

    • @TheNN
      @TheNN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@HickoryDickory86 Pretty much, but in my case I also basically decide what is canon to his story.
      Like in ESO his only 'canon' parts are anything related to the Dunmer or to the Ebonheart Pact, along with other things that affect him such as the Mages Guild, Psijics, and vampirism-related quests.
      All of Arena, Daggerfall, and Oblivion are totally non-canon for my character (even if I play as him in those games). His 'story' mostly takes place in Morrowind and Skyrim, like I said, being a character in the ES universe but not being the 'hero' of it.

    Coming from someone who started the series with _Oblivion,_ I spent more than a decade trying to get into _Daggerfall._ No matter how many times I tried, I gave up and went back to other _Elder Scrolls_ games. Now, I started another playthrough via _Unity,_ and I'm nearly the end of the Main Quest. Suffice it to say, the game drew me in. I've been playing it since May 31st. I'm not sure if it's because of _Unity,_ or the fact that I've already completed _Arena_ almost a year ago, so I'm more motivated to finish this game, but I came this far, and I'm gonna see it through to the end. Speaking of _Arena,_ I'd like to hear your take on it. If weren't for the fact that I was already addicted to _Daggerfall,_ and have been playing it a week or so before I came across your analysis of the game, it probably would've had me convinced.
    By the way, my Orcish Nerevarine, Bulag, would consider being around the presence of "grooge" to be the highest honor an Orc could have.

      Ok so I find myself in the same boat. Kept trying Daggerfall kept moving on to other TES games. What changed for you with Daggerfall? I tried the unity version a month ago and almost got into it but everything got repetitive. What am I missing cuz I want to get into this?

    • @Arena1999
      @Arena1999 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@spregged7231 I genuinely enjoyed the soundtrack composed by Eric Heberling. The lore is quite elaborate for a '96 game, and its story allows for more freedom than any game before or after it. The Spellmaker system is as unbalanced as ever - that's what made magic so much fun in the older games, frankly. The game's armor/clothing system rivals _Morrowind_ in terms of pure apparel customization. Speaking of customization, you probably got an idea as to why the game's Character Creation system is held in such high regard.
      Those are some aspects I remember fondly from _Daggerfall_ The game's repetition was noticeable from the first hours of gameplay, but _Daggerfall_ had been the only mainline _TES_ game I haven't finished, so I had a strong desire to finally complete it.
      I can't exactly pinpoint what "changed" my attitude towards the game; it took *years,* several uncompleted playthroughs, and a fan project for me to have a more positive opinion on it.

    • @thispurplebean2
      @thispurplebean2 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @spregged7231 What is tricky with Daggerfall is the lack of handholding and immersion, a lot of events are explained with text boxes and a lot of the scenery feels flat. Definitely play it on Daggerfall Unity, and install the DREAM texture mod. Those two things alone make a HUGE difference. I'd also just say that with a game like daggerfall, you kinda have to make your own magic? It's so open and so free that it's up to the player to find that groove, which can be tricky. A mod I would also suggest for improving immersion is the dynamic music mod, which allows you to add custom tracks from your favorite game franchises to replace the clunky daggerfall music and generate a bit more immersion imo

      Facts! A man with good taste. Morrowind is the best TES game, followed by Daggerfall, then Skyrim, then Oblivion, then Arena. Nice to see someone who started with Skyrim who still understands Morrowind & Daggerfall are better. You took the time to get through the Daggerfall tutorial dungeon, and to learn the combat. You cant hit stuff at first but the combat is so rewarding because of the RPG leveling system. You get to feel your character get better based on the things he/she practiced doing. Many Elder Scrolls fans who started with Skyrim either miss out on the better games or give up on them, when they see they need skill and they can't just melee kill everything easily from the start. Morrowind is such a cozy fun feeling world. Unlike Skyrim the cities actually look different from one another. There's a sense of fantasy and magic.

      All of the holds should've had a similarly old keep, Skyrim is ancient and most of the major capitals should have a keep that looks old, it was disappointing that so many had basic wooden houses given their age, then again most of the cities in Skyrim were demoted to villages and the only major population centers were the capitals so I guess they had to make them look basic for variety lmao

    I'd love to play Daggerfall but it wasn't the outdated visuals that stopped me, it was the UI. When I fire an arrow at a bat and it looks like it hit I can't tell if it missed, how much damage it did, etc. Same for physically swinging at an enemy: am I hitting it? Am I doing damage? I have no idea until the thing just dies.
    To me this is baffling because plenty of old school CRPGs had tons of stats like this being displayed all over the place, usually when you try an attack you see exactly what happened, whether it hit, how much damage it did, etc. In Daggerfall you apparently get none of that and that's what I was unable to deal with.

    I always find it funny that Morrowind fans are seen as the oldies preaching about how the series declined, because I literally remember having this attitude towards Morrowind on release - about how shallow, small and simplified it seemed compared to Daggerfall, which I'd been hooked on since 1996. About how it brought in all these new fans and was all flash and no substance. Heck, it was even released on consoles! Consoles! Of course, I wasn't entirely right, or entirely wrong, it's just a matter of perspective. A lot of the new fans that came on with Morrowind were very much the Skyrim latecomers, to me.

    46:40 A massive olive green diamond. Clever.
    ...
    I've played it. I loved it. I actually was making it so that more of the unique items could actually be found/created outside of the Skygerfall boundary, and I had also made compat. patches with the Beyond Skyrim: Bruma mod (the Adamantium Ingots from that mod are awesome looking), but unfortunately, all that was lost when Windows 10 decided to be an arsehole and brutally force those damned updates, whilst Windows was running, basically ruining the HDD everything was on. Been nearly a WHOLE DAMN YEAR SINCE THAT HAPPENED.
    ...
    Yeah, I had issues; there were some graphical issues (some floor textures were a glitchy mess and one of the items also had this issue), and a few CTDs due to some kind of loading thing. Nothing too glaring, and it's likely that the hardware I have with the more capable PC was basically being maxed out or something, and that might of been the issue. Not sure. I also had that issue with Shedungent, and no, at the time I knew not about the torch puzzle, so I wasn't sure what the deal was.
    ...
    I had used the Realm of Lorkan mod, which allows one to transport between various areas using large purple crystals (I forget which Squaresoft game that's ripped from), which also allows one to start there instead. I made my Breton main an ally of many factions, and gave her quite a few boons available from that realm, which would in turn make the large spiders and scorpions not care that I was there and/or aid me in some battles. I had also the alliance with Forsworn (she's a Breton as aforementioned), and because I also had the Handcart mod (I love it!), for a time I was barehanded, and I suplexed a LOT of Imps, lolz "For the Reach!"
    (I eventually figured out how to make the cart be an incorporeal accessory)
    ...
    I must of had over 2,000 weapons and over 1,200 pieces of wearable clothing after completing the quest, not to mention all the usable and unusable items I had also collected. That, and five figures in gold bits, maybe six figures. I had the Daggerfall dagger on a weapon rack in the basement of the 'build-a-house' manor nearby Falkreath, and the Wayrest shield taken from the corpse of the jackarse that betrayed Lysandus on an armor rack nearby the forge. All in all, fun. That said, I am playing the original game and enjoying that (this dated 2007 DELL cannot run DFUnity at all-blame Unity's removal of DX9 support on this).

    I really appreciate the technical achievement. However I think it's a more pragmatic approach to extend the existing games rather than completely rebuild them in an already outdated engine. I played Daggerfall on original release, and I can honestly say, while there are some aspects of the difficulty I can appreciate (Daedric prince questlines should be obscure and difficult to find/complete - they really feel too easy in Skyrim) there were definitely some aspects that were just frustrating due to the lack of QoL functions and obtuse gameplay. Navigating some of the dungeons was a real headache at times, even when I _didn't_ have a bunch of real life stuff to sap all of my spare time.

    Given the focus on just the story, I do wonder if a better approach would have been to have the different locations in their own instances that require fast travel (or leaving via gates/roads) to travel between. You'd lose the technicality of it being a true open world, but would be able to focus on set-dressing for the surrounding areas that make them look more true-to-scale. But perhaps that's just a difference in the stylistic vision the mod author had.

The idea of health being red was so ingrained in my brain that I couldn't comprehend the fact that the reason I kept dying when my stamina ran out was because it was just a differently coloured health bar. I was making outlandish theories in my head about how the combat system worked when it was just a colour swap.

    It's funny, because I see this as the worst of both worlds: Daggerfall's strength was in the character customization, gameplay - dated though it might be by modern standards - and trying to actually have a conversation system where you could ask people questions; while the story was ambitious but clumsily done. Skyrim, conversely, dedicated a lot of time to telling a 'cinematic' story; while dumbing down and streamlining the character customization, gameplay, and a dialogues with only one option.
    Someone's clearly put a lot of effort into making this happen though, so good job. I hope people enjoy it, even if that won't be me.

    I really like the charm and atmosphere of Daggerfall (unity) but for me combat was tough to enjoy. The main issue I had was knowing if I was actually hitting my enemies. I couldn't figure out how to get the floating dmg numbers to work either. I think having a clearer idea of if my attacks were working would have made it a lot more enjoyable from the combat perspective. Everything else was super neat and charming.
