    As someone who starts freaking out and having panic attacks whenever I see anything medical or whenever I walk into a hospital, I thank you. I’ve been watching you for a while and the calmness of these videos has helped me calm down in terms of walking into a hospital or even seeing procedures in movies. Many thanks!
    Edit: I’ve also learnt a lot which is always cool

      If you are worried about going to see someone for something. It can be useful to tell the reception, so the doctor is aware.
      That way we can ensure our tone is adapted for you 😊

    As you're referring to pop culture characters --- there's that hilarious demonstration of nerve reactions from Young Frankenstein. Not that you'd ever treat a patient or subject so poorly --- it's just something that popped into my head watching this presentation.

      If someone is learning brilliant
      If someone knows more about the bodies excellent
      If someone has found a way to ground themselves and it helps their internal stage magnificent
      Honestly, I think a component is also the little community that has grown up here, I’ve seen people chatting, checking on either other, even ensuring how operations and things have gone MONTHS after the procedure
      If people are feeling better about themselves in some way from these videos, that’s a surprising, but pleasing outcome

    "Short circuiting the brain" - there's no signal going to the brain in the shown example? Does that happen with most reflexes?

    • @DrJamesGill
      @DrJamesGill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Short circuiting, as it taking the brain out of the equation
      Perhaps not the clearest phrase there
      To be a reflex, it has to be automatic and nit involving the brain

    • @DrJamesGill
      @DrJamesGill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It really does depend on the cause. Hyperreflexia can be due to many things, including just a variation from normal.
      You’d need to clarify what they felt the cause was - if any 😊

  • @cholulahotsauce6166

    So is it significant that a reflex intended to move us away from a damaging stimulus doesn’t have to travel all the way to the brain?

    • @DrJamesGill
      @DrJamesGill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Because it is automatic and the signals have a shorter distance to travel meaning it’s a faster reaction

  • @jillianhelding
    @jillianhelding 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is pretty specific, but is there any reason that a reflex in the knee or ankle would be more exaggerated if you tested them while the patient was lying down instead of sitting up? And same question with the resistance testing--is it unusual for someone to be able to push back with sufficient power while sitting, but not while prone (maybe due to weak abdominal muscles?). This happen to me when I was being checked over by my PT vs. a neurologist.
