This channel is great, you do things on a budget. I don't want a video seeing people fly emirates first class, i want to see things i can actually afford. Tell it like it is
Oh man I love these random wee adventures! Really enjoyed it, although sometimes I'm glad to let you do all the hard work and I'll just sit back and enjoy it :) Great work Scott!
I was in Charleroi a few weeks ago and the construction in front of the train station was very much still there. If you ever fly to Charleroi (or indeed Brussels) again, take the train to Dinant. It's absolutely stunning. One of the most beautiful little towns I've ever seen.
I remember when I first came across moules frites, a local showed me a way of eating them. He said to use a fork to eat the first mussel and then use the now empty shell as tweezers to extract the mussels from the subsequent shells. That way you only ever need to put one shell to your mouth, with the bit you want to eat presented as if on a fork.
That's interesting! Mussels are quite popular over here in Spain, but have never thought of eating them like that. We'll give it a go next time and see how people react 😀😀
Despite the constructions sites, you managed to find some little gems there in Charleroi - the waffle van (of course) the art deco area was superb, I could have spent ages there looking at all the architecture, that little moules café with the huge fishing murals was great too, and the beautiful church interior. I am watching this in 2024, so your chocolate is not out of date!
About ten years or more ago I did a half day trip to Charleroi. The 11:45 Ryanair flight from Manchester to Charleroi (£5) then the bus into Charleroi Sud where I caught a lovely double deck train into Bruxelles Midi (Free, incuded in Eurostar ticket). In Bruxelles I had enough time for a bite to eat and at least 5 beers,. Next was my first trip on a Eurostar, just a couple of hours back to St Pancras (about £35). A walk down the road to Euston for my cheap advanced single back to Manchester arriving around 22:15. Not a bad afternoon out :-))
Thank you for not just talking about the ugly side of Charleroi but also the more interesting side.(Erik from Belgium)De Lijn is Flemish and TEC Wallonie.Long ago their was a huge fire in Brussels and Manneken Pis pissed on it and stopped the fire :)Grab a empty mussel and use it to eat the others

Currently in Charleroi after booking a trip due to this video! To be fair, the area close to the station is fairly nice - it just needs some businesses to invest and it'll thrive!
First it took me some time to wrap my tongue around the pronunciation. Charleroi is certainly past its days of glory but one hopes that Ryanair & co can bring some tourist traffic to this once industrial area . 24 hours in C'roi is a challenge which you gamely took up and we enjoyed 😉. More off the beaten track adventures as long as orange is hi-vis for a change 😀.
Hey Scott! I love your style going to the bad ass part of Belgium!! Next time journey over to Aachen and try the local Printen, The chocolate and nut type is insane!! Scott, a great entertaining video again, thank you. But I just have to comment, I recently watched with interest your video about your visit to 3 Travelodge hotels was it Fort William some other and Glasgow? My wife and I stayed at the Glasgow airport Travelodge back in April 23, we were in a room almost directly opposite your room. I also remember an evening walk into Paisley half an hour or so away. As we got closer to the town centre we both remained speechless as we looked around, we were very pleased that we saw almost no one as we walked along a couple of main streets. Could Paisley also be described as 'she's not pretty - but she has character' or were we treading the wrong main street.
You would think that an important bus like the one to the main city would be in a prominent location, well sign-posted, and not just some 4foot tall post with a bit of orange plastic on top...
Orange (traffic) signs always indicate a temporary situation in Belgium. Most notoriously the "omleiding" or "déviation" signs which are about everywhere.
I spent a couple of days there in Charleroi in 2018 (as my favorite Football club RCSC is from there). I think your video sums it up pretty much hahaha. For youth travellers I can highly suggest the Nirvana, a bar downtown (dress up nicely tho, or they won’t let you in). And a fry stall. I’m from Canada

It's a shame that the front of the railway station is again a construction site as the previous construction works had just finished and I quite liked the trees and the benches. Now they're going for a boring dehumanising wide open space. 🙄
Used to love Charleroi for the incredible rural vicinal tram network. Sadly what remains is a shadow of it's former self, now incorporated in the Charleroi Metro, which has been a badly planned fiasco, with even one line built, but never opened.
One of the worst places to live in Belgium, apparently. And of all the great beers we brew over here, you had to go and drink the worst chemical junk ever : Jupiler ! I'm seriously questioning your taste, mister !

Never use the airport bus since it's a rip-off, walk to Ransart instead and buy the 60-minute ticket online, or if you want a day ticket walk to Jumet Madeleine, it's 1,10 hour to get there but worth it and if you try to walk fast then I'd say 50 minutes ish
Surrealistic, isn't it ? :) The problem is that when they turned the airfield into an airport, nobody in the country believed in this project, they thought it was just a waste of money. And then they were surprized by the enormous success of the airport (more than 8 million passengers a year). So, they never planned a decent public transport connexion. There's actually a tramway (premetro) line which passes very close to the airport, but they never cared to build a branch to the terminal... Anyway, Charleroi calls itself "metropole", but it's a ghost from the past. It does have a lot of potential however, with a premetro system (line 5 will soon open toward a new hospital), a large railway station, suburban railways, an airport... I hope one day they can stop whining about their misery and start evolving to meet their potential. The works in front of the railway station are finished, by the way.
Charleroi Airport well it looks amazing compared to so called Belfast International. Which is the absolute PITS of and airport. and they have the dam cheek to call it international.
