  • After getting a free plow out of the neighbor's hedgerow, we set about bringing it back to life, and putting it to use! It's been a steep learning curve but a fun one too!

    I grew up riding with my Grandfather on his 8N and your video reminded me of when we plowed to create the family strawberry patch. They're remarkably competent tractors given their age. You did great work there, both with the plow and the video! Best of luck with the farm this coming year!

    We used the old 8N for plowing and disking because that is all we had until my father bought the John Deere Model A. Good luck in your farming.

    Very cool. Where is your farm? I grew up “farming” as my dad taught vo-ag at the local high school and had the FFA chapter. Now, years later, I miss the work. And the deep satisfaction that goes along with it. I am a professor now and my best students come from farms. Work doesn’t bother them at all.

    what's that lovely bush in the background. Detritus Ha~!! Not a word one would hear on a farm too often. But I am unsure that it's the right word.
    That Tractor has draft control? I'm impressed. Only the caddilac of tractors have that option these days.
    Nice farm, lovely family, animal husbandry is so good for kids.

      The white and purple flowering bushes are all lilacs. They smell incredible when all in bloom! We have four different varieties of lilacs. We love them.
      While it is not a farming specific term, detritus can refer to any debris, including sand and silt and decomposing organic material.

    Your not living the American dream you’re living the Godly dream I really enjoyed watching your videos your voice is so calming ! Isn’t it frustrating when those 8ns start leaking differential oil out of the splins that’s exactly why I finally found some 8ns with the inner axle seal because I got tired of not having brakes but I have had some luck with putting silicone on the axle splines and the hub splines and then I cut a round piece of old inner tube and put that over the threads and tighten the axle nut I forgot what the proper torque is but don’t tighten it to much they can strip!! But I just thought I would give you something to think about! Stay safe and God bless you and your family!

      Sounds like a great winter project. I like the inner tube idea, I have a couple dead tubes hanging around that I ruined trying to get into those blasted skinny front wheels! Ill give it a try this winter!

    TheSWAY BARS should be used if you want stright rows.

    That Farmall H is what you should be using to pull that plow

  • @Takyshaky01YT

    you know that a row is suposed to be straight and those chains whitch you took away what let the plow go side to side would be just to keep the plow straight and also give you more control over the depth and angel

    Don't know if it applies to the 8N, but the Ferguson TEA 20 requires the PTO to be engaged so that the draft control function works and eliminates the wheel spin that you are getting. There's an old 1950's Ferguson video clip on YT that explains draft control. Maybe worth trying with your PTO system engaged?

    Have you filled your rear tires on the 8N with liquid ballast? That would make a world of difference in the way it pulls a moldboard plow. Great video! Really nice seeing the 8N tilling the soil!

      Fill would definitely help! We are about 1/4 full on the left, 1/3 full on the right. So.... not really.

    8n. Sway bars and a single 16 inch well work plow. If a plow is old and looks like it has never been used, it us because it is one of many that are poor design and never worked. Find a plow that looks like it is almost worn out. That's the one to buy.

  • @christinamoneyhan5688
    @christinamoneyhan5688 ปีที่แล้ว

    First things first. Get a plow that was designed for your tractor. Then get a owners manual for that plow and set it up for the tractor as the plow book tells you. I could tell from the aerial view your tire tried to plow spacing is way too far right but, because you are t4ying to use a cobbled up plow you will probably not get it right. The heal of the shear should pull straight on the inside of your plow furel. If you have a 12” shear then the maximum depth you can plow is 6”, if you have a 14” shear then it’s maximum depth is 7” etc. once you are in the ground at the depth you want to plow set the depth control on the raise and lower quadrant lever . Then turn your draft control on and let it there. Select a speed suitable to the type soil you are working. It is not a race. If slow is better then plow slower but keep engine speed ( old Fords and Ferguson’s) raved to the 540 pto speed that way the hydraulic pump has the volume and pressure to activate the lift properly. Lastly level the plow right and left , front to back once in the feral. Then it’s a matter of doing the best you can straight as an arrow. It’s not about ripping up a field , it’s about layin each turn up piece of ground level with the next. Be proud of the plowing job you did. 🙂👍🇺🇸✌🏻🙏🏽

    you really should have sway bars on it while plowing

    • @Lackieestatesfarm
      @Lackieestatesfarm ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Never use sway bars. If the plow is adjusted properly it will follow as it is supposed to, and if you hit a rock it can jump to the side. If you use sway bars, it’s hard to tell what you may break

    Run a disk through it first, especially in unworked sod. Your tractor won’t have to work as hard

    Please DO NOT LET that little boy start that tractor. He is FAR too small to do that and can't even touch the pedals in case something would happend. Let him stay on your lap for now.

    • @llaccm1
      @llaccm1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If he wanted to raise him to be a pansy, he’d move to the city. I was driving tractors when I could barely reach the pedals.
