Choosing a Cow Breed- Dexter vs. Jersey Conclusion
มุมมอง 9155 หลายเดือนก่อน
Which do we like better? Our dexters? or our Jersey? There are so many cow breeds to choose from, and as we'll talk about, that choice is not even the most important to make as you identify cattle for your homestead.
Chicks and more chicks....

A few years ago, Heather's brother and his wife visited us to help bring in the hay. While they were born and raised suburban, neither are strangers to hard work. Together we got the hay in and the cow's fed for the winter.
Chick Brooder 2024

We are brooding several groups of chicks this year. We made a new larger brooder bin in a tote and just acquired a heat plate. The heat plate has been amazing and the chicks seem to prefer it too!
Antique Milk Machine Pump Restored

Planting a Field Without Farm Tools
มุมมอง 1.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
We've planted with no tools, and we've planted with all the attachments of 1940. Let's compare! It's taken us 5 years to move a third acre field section of weeds, back into productive grass. We began rehabilitating this field section by moving a mid-field manure pile, a gravel pile, and rubble cement chunk pile. Then tilled up the field and sowed new seed. Keeping down weeds has been a huge cha...

Floppy Feet & Ketone Cow: Dexter-Mini Jersey Cross
Please, not just learning to plow. all of it. I am from the desert and just bought raw land. Tree stumps and all. What do i need to do to make crops? I need food, and want to sell food. I have tractor and raw land. What do i do, to reep the rewards? Subsioler, Plow, Disk, Plant Harvest?? too many missing. I have tractor, and just getting brushmowed, whats next? Oh and your hydraulic piston is leaking in your top end. which is why you had to swap to position control to raise to top position.
Silly music is louder than your voice. Won't be back.
Very cool to watch
Are you an accountant by trade? I’m impressed by your graphs. Hats off to you and your family for doing hay the old fashioned way, and not to mention making videos of the process. This is the first time I’ve seen your videos, I’ll be watching more for sure
Sounds about right. Murphy’s Law is a farmer’s middle name. It’s my middle name anyway.
So overall which breed do you prefer? Any disease problems with either breed such as mastitis, milk fever or ketosis?
Awesome
Fantastic job .
First thing is keep the kids an pets away from that cutter bar!
Was the hay always that loosely bailed? Or was it meant to haul bailed and non bailed hay alike?
Any tips on how to take one off the rails? I got one, want to take down, thanks love the vid
Thank you for another great video
hmm. if you had mini goats/mini cows you could have probably made it in 2 acres, no dig, and pasture cropping. maybe 1 1/2. cool idea though now that I think about it.
We used a Kosch belly mount sickle mower on our Farmall M with a New Idea conditioner pulled behind. Except for an occasional broken rivet on the sickle bar it went really well. And with that belly mount the corners were a quick spin of the steering wheel aided by a push on the right rear brake and you did a 90 degree turn with no wasted time, but we would be mowing 40 to 60 acres of alfalfa clover mix at a time.
I recently bought a barn full of loose hay that was put there with one of these. As far as I can tell everything is there from the last time it was used. I dont need the hay is there a way these can be used in reverse to take the hay out of the lofts and drop on the floor?
Wanna sell that nice 8n ford
I grew up putting up loose hay. We put up around 500 ton every summer. None of our hay was stored inside.. It was stacked in stacks approx. 7 ton to the stack. With a proper top built on the stack there is next to no spoilage. With minimal equipment it is much less labor intensive than square bales and much easier to store without hay barns.
when American was more agrarian that unit was pulled by horses, Model A and T.. Anything that had the strength to pull it..did..
100% FUN!!!
Loving them to their death. Man you are so instand. Go vegan. You eat whom you love🤮
This is a silly comparison. Apples and oranges. Comparing a dairy breed to a beef breed.
Dexters’ are well known to be a dual purpose breed
@@henrybartsch6788 But their milk production is on the very low side and they are known not to be very cooperative. I took dairy science at UW Wisconsin Madison. They are at the very bottom of the list.
Did you say Brisket would end up in the freezer? Simply barbaric. How can you be affectionate and caring; then turn around and say you would kill it because it didn't cooperate with you? So gross.
Dexter can be used for milk and beef, one of the best breeds out there IF you get a good line. Just like any animal there are pro's and con's, one bad cow can form an opinion about the breed that isn't correct. Not every Jersey is a good milk cow, same with Guernsey's each individual cow is different.
Very cool. Where is your farm? I grew up “farming” as my dad taught vo-ag at the local high school and had the FFA chapter. Now, years later, I miss the work. And the deep satisfaction that goes along with it. I am a professor now and my best students come from farms. Work doesn’t bother them at all.
I actually found this both interesting and informative. Great job
I'd say Rita is excessive fat, not good in the milking breed.
You all have the cutest family. Great videos, good luck to you all! 😀
Thanks so much! 😊
Saw one of these trolleys in a cracker barrel and have been trying for the longest time to figure out what it was and what it was used for. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity!
You guys still using the easy way hay loader i saw one of them a l62 same model as mine sell at an Amish auction in peebles ohio last Saturday for 2k in considerably more worn condition than mine although restored i haven't gotten mine done yet due to other stuff needing done I also got a hayloft barn rail for $1!!!!! So i no longer need to look for one and the knife blades for my horse mowers for half the price of new
Yes we are still using our hay loader. Just put up a video of some of our city family trying it out. And they loved it too! (sort of, lol)
Great video. Thank you for making it.
How do I see the bale case over loose hay: Pros: 1. Compacted hay(takes less space) and is more convenient to maneuver when feeding, 2. Faster and less work intensive time to barn(your loose hay system may work better, else loading and unloading loose hay is usually done by hand), 3. Countable units of hay(better for sale). Cons, in this order: 1. High cost of equipment(including maintenance) 2. Hay needs to be better dried(risk of mold, even fire), 3. Less desirable to cattle(always prefers loose hay).
Everyone on Earth should see this video. The farm implements are from years ago. This is so beautiful to watch this history. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS
Thanks! We enjoy bringing bits of old history to life. It's been a fun learning experience.
Great to see you back
Oh man it's great to see you back thank you for your time and sharing from oregon
Being completely mechanically incapable, I am amazed at what you so bravely take apart, fix and use! I'm so happy you're making videos again!
That vacuum gauge is probably inches of mercury, not psi.
Awesome! Vane type pumps are still pretty popular, I didn’t realize they went back that far. I use a piston style vacuum pump from 1939 and it still works great! That stuff was built to last!
Nice, , you still using that hay loader? I finally found new wheels for my ihc no9 sickle bar mower, but am doing some side stuff to get a 1888-1920 frick size 0 sawmill up and running so I can use my trees to build the hayloft barn I want before I start working on the horse drawn equipment
Yes we are still using the hay loader. Sounds like you are making progress! That will be fun to use your horse drawn equipment.
@cozycowfarm the equipment is making slow progress I don't have a shop yet and I'm doing tons of other things so I'm putting a couple minutes in every other day, I did get fourty ft of hayloft barn track for a dollar at an auction my Amish friends wanted me to take them to so that really helped with finding one of those impossible to find for a decent price items
Hello neighbors!
Looks like someone's been busy.
Nice to see you back and congrats on the new additions.
Great to see you back. I look forward to the next 8 weeks.
Your back!!!! 🎉
Here's the link to the Ferguson 35 video... th-cam.com/video/uLUry11WOy8/w-d-xo.html and the link to the TO-30 video.... th-cam.com/video/jJGAAhFztTw/w-d-xo.html
Don't know if it applies to the 8N, but the Ferguson TEA 20 requires the PTO to be engaged so that the draft control function works and eliminates the wheel spin that you are getting. There's an old 1950's Ferguson video clip on YT that explains draft control. Maybe worth trying with your PTO system engaged?
I've had to cut open and spread out so many bales in the hayloft over the years because the weather demanded we bale before the hay was dry enough. And that can save the quality of the hay so it doesn't mold or heat. But it is never perfect. The loose hay that we have put up always breaths well. It makes some very sweet hay. The cows love it. But as you say it is not time efficient.
I respect how you take old and make it new😊
The SRF is such a fun car. I completely agree, once you’ve driven a purpose built race car you never view street cars (even highly prepared) the same way again.
Stabilizers supposed to be off.
TheSWAY BARS should be used if you want stright rows.
