Thika Prison Riot

Over 200 inmates serving time for capital offences at the Thika GK prison continued to wreak havoc for the third day running, protesting alleged mistreatment by prison warders and lack of enough food. The convicts broke window grills and doors, forcing administration police to be called in to reinforce security at the correctional facility. According to the officer in charge of the facility, Samson Kunzu, the problems started after a thorough search was conducted on inmates who had been transferred from Kamiti maximum prison, revealing contraband mobile phones and drugs.
