One of my best friends I met was schizophrenic. He committed suicide a couple years after I met him. I only found out about his illness after he had passed, and the mystery and my inability to understand his thought processes finally started to make sense. Many people in our school loved him and his eccentric personality and strange humor. I cherish the time we spent together and will forever be grateful for his friendship.

@asmrbuddha916 You could say that he wants his adult son who he's cared for all his life to become self sufficient and live a good, fulfilling life despite his illness like millions of people with schizophrenia do. You think it's a better idea for the parents of someone with schizophrenia to care for them until they die and leave the child with no life skills or ability to live independently at all?

I cannot express how much I love this deivery. The straight-faced and serious tone is indispensable for talking about such a roller coaster of emotion. He’s not a sage or holy man. He is mentally ill.
Today, it’s the PC thing to do; to say it’s beautiful etc. No, this man once held his family hostage. They had no food nor did they understand why he was doing this!
The family is hurting, suffering because of him.
People like this often rebuff treatment, they won’t listen to doctors, they won’t take their meds, they receive money from the state gov. To live on and therefore and exposition in their own crazy would.

One of my best friends developed schizophrenia in his 20s . He was someone I not only trusted completely but was in awe of because of his creativity and his talent for playing instruments which took me a long time to get good at. He went away to the military after highschool and was doing well, I thought. Soon his letters became odd and he was talking about things he was involved in that were unusual and sometimes frightening. One day he showed up at my house looking bad and acting strangely and he said he was AWOL and the military authorities were after him. Next time I saw him he was discharged but drinking heavily and just in a bad way. I didn't hear from him again and a couple years later he died after drinking liquor and taking drugs prescribed for schizophrenia, which I didn't know he'd been diagnosed with. Finding out he had schizophrenia explained his change of personality but it didn't make it any less sad.

I grew up with a guy named Bryan who became one of my best friends. He was smart, even gifted . He could play several instruments , which took me years to learn to play well. He could pick up an instrument and figure it out in no time. Bryan was a track star and a great hitter in baseball. He joined the Air Force and rose in rank quickly. Then he started to send me letters that didn't make sense , saying he believed he was being targeted and singled out for all sorts of bizarre scenarios by different people . His brother and mom were getting letters from him that said the same type of thing. I didn't hear from him for a few months and one day he showed up at my apartment in Cincinnati looking like he hadn't had a haircut or a shave in months. He eventually told me he was AWOL and that he believed the government would execute him if he was found. He said he had information that was classified and that he needed to go to Turkey for some reason, because there were people there who could clear his name. It didn't take long for me to realize he was delusional but I didn't really understand schizophrenia at all so I didn't know what to do. I let him stay with me awhile, but finally told his brother that Bryan was in Cincinnati and they needed to get him and take him someplace where he could get help. His brother came and eventually convinced him that he needed to seek help, which he did. About a year later he wrote me a letter saying thanks for helping him out, but he was going to die, because he couldn't stop drinking and his meds were not safe to mix with alcohol. And that is exactly what happened. They found him dead in his room from a mixture of vodka and anti psychotic meds. Bryan was 25 years old when he died. I've since tried to learn more about schizophrenia. The way it destroyed my friend so completely and so quicky was shocking.

Schizophrenia is a living nightmare. These voices constantly tear the person down, tell them they are not worthy to live,
that they are horrible. The voices are never good or nice. Imagine this running through your mind all of the time-ALL the time. It is one of the most difficult mental disorders to treat effectively. There are only so many meds, and for some, none of them work. It comes upon people generally in their late teens or twenties, just when they are supposed to be getting started as young adults. Mental illness doesn't just happen to one person, it happens to everyone who loves them. So, so sad.

if you treat it like a disease it will become a disease ....you say " It comes upon people generally in their late teens or twenties, just when they are supposed to be getting started as young adults. " that is the problem , people are expected to become addults , to loose their child-soul , to get a job , stop dreaming and become materialistic rational consumption slaves ... this is our western culture and society norms ...but what if someone is scared of becoming this kind of PRODUCT .... what if the soul starts being rebellious , and trying to escape this life-plan , that is just an attempt to put you in a shape - in a box ....schizophrenia is a gift , a open psychedelic mind ... but when you are not used to anything exept " normality " , then it might scare you ... when you start telling someone who is on a trip to mental revolution : " hey youre sick " .... what is that ?! actually people with this gift can read the thoughts of others , they are very spiritual , very sensitive , intuitive , creative , they have a different way of perceiving reality than others...more deep , non - materialstic and clearvoyant ...its not a disease , you have to decode the messages and talk to the voices cause they wanna tell you something but you dont listen , just eating pills , that doesnt make it better , become more spiritual , drop your rational mind that is violating you..dive into your spirit and LISTEN ...

Yesterday I got drunk had a manic episode where I remember yelling saying crazy stuff. Today I had a hangover all day but these episodes every now and then seem to rejuvinate my spirit, kill the worry brain cells. from 6am to 1pm I rested listen to the radio. The media in the UK vilify this so called illness to make people scared of those being labelled, which further isolates them. It's part a social control program called gangstalking. Check out cointel pro, mk ultra etc. All programs designed to mind control people. Remember, the CIA invented the term 'conspiracy theory', mmm now why would they do that? It's a form of mass gaslighting designed to make the target look mentally ill. WAKE UP!! YOUR GOVERNMENTS ARE SCREWING YOU OVER!!

I don't understand the attitudes of people in this, even the daughter. They don't seem to be talking about someone with a mental illness (not disease, as was said by someone interviewed) they talk like he just decided to do these crazy things on a whim. Talking about being "angry" that he missed them growing up, that he was "breaking up the family" - they all talk like it is his fault.

My son was our small town quarterback growing up and loved by so many. He was stricken with psychosis at age 17. Later diagnose with bipolar and psychosis and also schizophrenia. It was beyond words to describe. We lost him to “the voices” at age 20. It’s been 14 years and I still don’t understand this. 💔 ❤ It can be upsetting to hear people say suicide is selfish, that it’s a “permanent solution to a temporary problem”. He didn’t want to die, the suffering was just too much. As his mother, it hurts so much but to know that he was suffering even more is just heart wrenching. I can’t imagine what it’s like in their inner world but he was so beautiful and kind. He left behind notebooks filled with soul level poetry that has given me a glimpse inside his magnificent soul and I’m just blown away by the depth of it all. I miss him so much.

Rubies and Jaspers Jasper We now are very close to understand what causes schizophrenia, you can take your GOD OF THE GASP ARGUMENT in your ass. There will come a time when your imaginary stupid god will become a useless piece of shit.

Homeless people learn that kind of living. My nieces daughter lives in the streets was badly abused by my niece and her step dad on drugs. She was born with some mental problem. Now in the streets homeless and taking it out on herself.

    Oh. I see,
So now this guy who has family who are still alive has to live out the rest of his life alone and shunned by society with no shelter or money or bed or bathroom.. Why? Because those who claim to love him would have to put work into his care. He's become inconvenient. For better or for worse? Yeah right. Till death do us part? Hmm.
    Blaming him for his ailment.
    Being angry with him.
How about instead of blaming him and harboring selfish resentment GO FIND HIM and help this man, your father who you claim to miss.

Even though he's crazy, the thing about the pigeons being re-descended wizards was pretty funny.

Have you ever had to live with someone like this? Especially in the '70s when it wasn't understood as well as it is now. Keep in mind, he has been diagnosed as schizophrenic, but up until then she probably had no idea what was wrong and all she could figure was that he was just an asshole. Even if she did know and understand, she had children and their safety and well-being to think about.
