From a user perspective I have three main issues with C1:
1- they encourage you to make early purchases without actually telling you what new features will be added to the product.
2- eventually when they do reveal the features, it’s old features that competitors have had for years and they justify this as worthy of a new version instead of a minor dot update.
3- the new features (as behind as they are) are yet still not ready and full of flaws.

completely agree. they push hard to get you to upgrade pre-release. So far this upgrade seems buggy and unfinished. When you're pushing HDR and panoramic and they are buggy, tells me this version is not yet ready. If it wasn't for using a Fuji I would have stayed with Lightroom.

absolutely true. still, the features that do work are still (imo) work way more intuitive and better than in Lightroom. I stay on a 1-2 Year old version of C1 and am quite happy most of the time. Still, its not a nice way to market a professional tool

There is no justification for me to pay their very high upgrade price for features I can do with other apps mutch better. CaptureOne is seriously late for these features and they seem poorly implemented.

How refreshing to see an honest appraisal of Cap One 22. I luv using Cap One, but 22 is a disappointment.
I am so thankful I waited to see the performance of panorama stitching before I upgraded. This really is an ill informed and amateurish implementation of panorama stitching. Were actual panoramic photographers involved in the development of this new feature? Where are the tools required to edit the panorama prior to rendering? Not only do leaves, water and clouds move between frames, but so do people and so do dogs, as illustrated at time 14:23. I don’t know any photographer, professional or amateur who would believe this is acceptable.
I would luv Cap One to have a meaningful and workable panorama function, but sadly, until it does I will continue to create my panos in Affinity. Affinity allows me to to brush in/out objects from overlapping frames. This level of control is not optional - for me.

    • @freetibet1000
      @freetibet1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, I also use Affinity for panorama stitching, among many other great things in Affinity. And it works great. But I must say that rarely does it perform well without me having to go in with the brush and correct its stitching flaws though. So yes, I’m glad to have that editing tool prior to rendering the pano!
So far my panorama stitching in Capture One have worked even better, right out of the bat. I really like the fact that now I have the opportunity to work on a RAW panorama still in C1! These are early days yet so I suspect I will run into stitching problems, sooner or later though? But for now, it looks promising.

@@freetibet1000 I’m glad you’re having good experiences. I am sure Cap One will improve and provide stitching tools - in time. I will wait until this occurs and it’s pano performance matches it’s otherwise premium quality. I can’t wait to stitch, render and edit, all in Cap One.

@@ianmurray1825 To me it’s one more tool in the toolbox to use. If it doesn’t work, I’ll try something else. It’s simple! But I share your sentiment that I also like to do as much as possible in C1 without having to resort to other solutions, as a backup. Working directly on the RAW files is always the best, isn’t it?

  • @FDunst-xj8rn

Thanks for the honest review. Unfortunately, it is standard to bring something out quickly and improve it afterwards. The customers are the beta testers. C1 is a very good RAW developer, only the pricing policy is excessive in my opinion.

I'd like to say Thank You so much for this real, objective review for an important piece of software for any photographer. As it's well known, some other "genius" photographers and ambassadors prefer not to mention the obvious software disadvantages, mistakes or lossless functions.
Guess, it wood be better for C1 authors to nail the program to make it faster, stable and more colour accurate instead of racing with Lightroom.

    Great review!
It looks like I wasted my money - at least until they fix these issues with an update. (I bought it in advance at a discount -- last time I do that.)
The panorama issues you were having are not anything to do with moving leaves. In some test panos I've just done you can see the jitteriness along the "seems" of the joins, including through rocks. Granted, I've just tested it with images taken on a 14mm lens, which is a bit of a stress test, but the problem occurs for distant and central objects where wide-angle parallax issues that can afflict such panos really should not be a problem. To be fair, I've just run the same images through Lightroom, and though a lot better, it too struggles in a few places. But I also ran the images through Autopano Giga (sadly defunct) and that stitched them perfectly.
Fortunately, these things can in principle be fixed with an update, but as it stands this is a very disappointing release.

Great video. Your style and delivery are a breath of fresh air: actually getting to the point??? unheard of! No 5 minute b-roll sequence of you making a coffee??? Absurd! As far as v.22 goes, I will definitely not be upgrading. The HDR and Pano features are useless given the glitches. As a location headshot (and Sony) shooter, having to rely on a local network makes the wireless tether a deal-breaker. These issues make this release feel like it was rushed to market - not something I'd expect from Capture One. Disappointing overall. Keep up the great work!

  • @robertnystrom289
    @robertnystrom289 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm using CO 22, and I did see a few of the glitches with moving leaves. Oddly, moving water was fine. It was somewhat related to lens focal length (35 mm seemed to be least glitches). It was also important to set the lens corner correction to 100% before stitching. I think you are right in the good enough versus perfect (I'm also from software/hardware world). One really needs feedback and different images with different cameras/lenses to fine tune it. That said, If I already have external apps to do pano and hdr, there's no reason not to do v22. The round trip stitch to PS is still baked in, but does result in a tiff, so RAW is crippled at that point. I do like the multi image auto level, so far that's worked well. And it seems faster on my M1. I think the bottom line is a pixel editor (PS, Affinity, On1, etc) versus a RAW editor. IMHO, once one gets a taste of RAW editing, it's tough to go back to full time pixel. Pixel editors absolutely have their place, it's just for my photos there's so much better results with the RAW edit. I'm sure the gnomes in Denmark are working on it. On another note, I'm not a HDR fan; I would much rather have had focus stacking. For what it's worth.

Thanks, it would be interesting to see how LR handles the ghosting in the trees.

    • @freetibet1000
      @freetibet1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes I agree! When we encounter problems like these we should try the same files in other softwares to better determine if the problems lies in the files or the software.
For instance, I got the same problems with jagged artifacts in the HDR merge around some of the very brightest highlights, like Todd did. I then tried the same files in NIK HDR plug-in and had no such issues there. Instead I discovered issues with gosting around tree branches in the NIK plug-in that C1 was able to completely eliminate automatically. I haven’t tried the files in Aurora yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a third issue shows up there, ha ha!
Conclusion; no software is perfect, but my personal preference is to have as many possible choices to influence a result, as possible. Right now we are not being given any handles to control the outcome in C1. Which produces a feeling of “hit or miss” really. The upside is that we get a RAW file to work with if the pano stitch or the hdr merge is successful.

You did a fine, and fair review! I have to say that C1's "HDR" is laughably poor. Photomatix Pro is is the best $99 I've ever spent, in terms of photo software,
and it has a huge number of presets, all the way from simple fusion, without tone mapping, to extreme HDR looks, which some people seem to like. (I don't!)
C1 does some things very well, and other things quite badly, IMHO. Object removal, in particular, is poor.
I bought the upgrade to 22, but I'm feeling like I got poor value for money. And the price goes WAY up with every version.

Thank you for your honest review! I was also in the software business before (30 years) and I would never released a new version of a software working like this. I gave it a try and found out that they also changed the way to export and now it is not possible anymore to set a separate main folder per session - at least I couldn’t find a way to.
So I keep using an old version and every now and then trying to use Lightroom (that is included in photoshop bundle).
It is true, in software is difficult to get to perfection, but releasing something like this is a joke.
    Thank you again! 🙏🏻

Quite a few comments on them catching up and I have to agree, I've turned to using MSICE for stitching and GIMP for blending both freeware.

thank you Todd. Your deep review is what I was waifing for!. I saw the inicials videos of the 2 Capture One guys and I had a lot of doubts regarding to the strengh of the new features and your test finally adds light to this question. I have upgraded to CO21 last month so I am entitled to download for free the new version (have not done it yet). I use both Adobe and CO softwares to edit my raw files. I shoot fujifim GFX bodies and I have mixed feelings about the 2 brands: for instance, I prefer the look of CO for editing my Fuji raw data, especially how capture one handles the fuji film simulation presets, which adds a lot to a final image after edition. Another strengh of capture one is the ability to recover shadows and highlights, compared to LRCC. However, I think LRCC and Photoshop are more matured softwares in strong pixel edition, like hdr, ghosting tratement, the use of "content aware fill" (CO22 is far beyond this option), and now, the latest update of LRCC and Photoshop which add a great update of the masking tools (selecting the subject and sky, for example) is making LRCC and Photoshop the current leader of software edition, let alone that they are 50% cheaper than capture one!. The fact that Capture one doubles in cost that Adobe counterparts, makes me stay very annoyed, since everybody expects more from Capture One according to what the charges!. One example is that I am asking Capture One team (I submitted a request 2 times in their website) is to add a tool that allows the user to listen to the "voice memo" that it is recorded by the camera and it is attached to the raw data. I use this tool in Lightroom since 2008!!!, and it is very important for me, because I use the 4 Nikon tilt&shift lenses and I record with the voice memo how many degrees of shift and/or tilt I applied to the file, then, I check this info on Lightroom library while I look at the pictures and compare one to each other. Capture One has failed to add this feature that Lightroom offers from (almost) the very beginning of their software. Too dissapointing of Capture One. I hope they offer soon an update to their HDR and panoramas, correcting the ghosting issue as you have pointed out very well. Thanks for your video!.

Let’s hope these are teething problems with HDR and Pano stitching. I got the exact same jagged edges in sky and water with my HDR merge too. When they first launched the Dehaze tool it had some major flaws too but over time it has become a very useful and reliable tool. I hope we will see that happening to these two tools as well? To be honest, one HDR merge I did actually managed to correct for moving branches in a tree! I tried the same files in other HDR softwares and they actually failed with these same branches. So, the results are a mixed bag right now.

    Hello Todd,
I simply didn't do the update because I use the new features with other software outside of Capture One, so what I get here was just too little.
You just have to see how this will develop further.
For my part, I've been waiting forever for improved DAM functions that go in the direction of Lightroom and continue to wait for functions for camera scanning of film negatives, as they are largely included in the CH version. That would be a significant advance for me, where I would update directly.

I updated yesterday and after watching your in-depth review, was concerned about the pano function. However, after processing three landscapes combining 2, 3 and 4 shots, I'm looking at the finished stitching at 200/300% and not seeing the same artifacts/edges/jitter that you posted. At first glance my results appear comparable to Affinity and at least as good- if not better- than an older version of Photoshop(CS6). I'm using the Capture One 22 for Fujifilm, running on Windows 10 and shooting with an X-T3.
No idea how Capture One is developing this version, perhaps there are certain specifics based upon platform. However would suggest there may be local issues with your setup, such as apps running in the background, and/or potential CPU/graphics processor issues (depending upon your device). Appreciate your review and breakdown of the new features... take care.

Thanks for the feedback! Glad to hear it’s working better for you. I’ve seen this same problem with other pano sequences as well, and from what I can tell the more images in a sequence the more defects there are. So a multi-row pano like the one in this video is more susceptible to defects than a single row. But they still exist in single rows too. Hoping C1 improves the tool.

Forget the new features, is the software worth the $200 for the Fuji version for what it does a year ago and is it working well enough for the next 3-4 years to upgrade then when the new features today are actually working properly? And meanwhile Affinity for $25 kicks it's arse... I only use C1 for fuji conversion and then PP in affinity so it costs me nothing and I have HDR, Pano's and Focus stacking in Affinity that work great. If C1 was under $100 I might give it a shot.

Awesome review, thanks a lot for the honesty and depth.
What a stupid aproach from Phase One perspective.
At the end they are merging and masking 3 images. Why the heck they didn't make transparent that process, giving to the user the option to consume the merged images with their masks??? In that way you could go and edit the masks to correct any issue like this one.
Also I found that HDR merging in my workflow is not always a merging from a simple Luma mask, but it tends to prioritise the protection of certain areas to minimise noise or bring up detail but other areas are less "touched" in the HDR process from the baseline image...just because it is not needed. This kind of workflow would only be possible with an HDR function that exposes the masks and an intermediate result, instead of that dng.
I get it Phase One, that means a whole new user flow and interface to deal with mask in a multi-image scenario but...if you really want to improve users workflow, that's the way ;)

I might add that I have access to Lightroom from my work. I have always enjoyed the more simple workflow of C1 and the results I get from it. However, being an iphone user and having free access to lightroom I have started using it in my phone as a camera app instead of apples camera app. I just LOVE having RAW-photos and editing in my pocket and also having the cloudsync of the files to my workcomputer. No more downloading my pictures from the phone, they are always there in my pc.
Now that is a killer feature I would pay to get into my camera! But somehow I don´t see C1 doing it...
Also, for around 120 SEK (12$) a month I can get Lightroom AND photoshop AND mobile apps with cloudsync.
C1 wants over 300 SEK per month for just RAW development. It is also a reason I do not upgrade.

There really is no point in updating yet. The two new tools aren't worth the money they're asking for. But comparing Lightroom and Capture One is a mistake, because Capture One tools and processing algorithms are an order of magnitude more advanced than in Lightroom. Capture One also works better and more accurately with color of raw files.

@@digwillhachi Work with masks in C1 is implemented better than in any other raw-converters. I have tried almost all programs. How you work faster in Lightroom with masks - I can't even imagine. Can you give an example? Create a mask, switch between them in the tool menu - what could be faster? In addition, C1 has such tools for creating masks that are not available in Lightroom. For example, a mask by brightness. And remember that Adobe products are monthly expenses. And C1 bought it once and forgot it for 2-3 years. You can both buy and upgrade on Black Friday at half price.

I have upgraded to Capture One 22. I could not find the Process Recipe ( cogwheel / button ) in the menu. Has it been done away with? In your video on Soft Proofing ( Feb 3, 2021?) there is a mention on choosing the output profile in the Process Recipe. How does one now, in Capture One 22, set the colour profile for viewing while editing; and set the file format/colour profile for exporting? How does one instruct the proofing tool ( the eye glasses icon) on which format/colour space to show/exhibit on the monitor screen to enable one to see what the finally exported photo would look like?

The more people buy this version (and the more people have a subscription) the higher the chances are that C1 stops at 80% finish state because the remaining 20% to make the new HDR and pano feature actually useful to non-still life photography may just too effortsome for them. Frankly this is a shame, I agree with you that user feedback is valuable (I have been beta testing it) but in the current state the asked upgrade price is a slap in customers face. They should have give a HDR and pano version for free and ask for an upgrade price when the features are finished.

  • @cdmikelis87
    @cdmikelis87 2 ปีที่แล้ว

3:35 -> it's just 16-bit tiff saved in DNG, not at all raw file as camera would do,
4:52 -> difference depending which image is primary. YES! Also difference how you process single files upfront. That only proves what they do in the background -> C1 process and export all files (in to memory), than blend them and save as new file. Results does not show much more highlights preserved than from a single file and not much noise is reduced in shadows. It seems they just blend with some hard masks involved, with no deghosting effort. Noise in shadows is not fully eliminated, and highlights are not fully restored; so "highlight" slider must be pushed quite far to see any meaningful difference; but results are not by my liking, since it comes out worse than just editing single (proper) exposed file. Funny my Pentax K-r (entry level DSLR from 2012) have better handheld HDR feature where it is hard to see any ghosting. But HDR look is similar to this C1 - washed out artificial and it needs some serious and delicate curve tweaking in external (HDR) software, to get nice results. So why bother?? I hoped they would stack images into layers, align them, than allow us to use luma-range and masks; but they just slammed this feature in, to make subscribers happy. Even Adobe put more effort on it, 5 years ago. They should get 1/5 score for effort.
I actually see this "depending on primary image" as workaround to this lacking of control, so one can try for better outcome, especially when exposures are not exact. But trying and wasting time is not what I expect from a top premium product.
6:37 -> Artefacts! That is on par with some free smartphone app (from 2015). Not only if there is any slight movement in image, the merged image is useless even when complicated light transitions are in the image. I've seen the lost battles with ghosting, but never such a failure. I see this C1 become specialised: They specifically advertised this new feature for real estate shooters; as I do that, I can see this feature is tuned for the purpose. No moving bits in the frame of what so ever, few simple areas that needs different exposures with no complicated transitions. Like windows and lights. Than previous feature of heal brush was again targeted to skin retouchers, but whole approach of layers complicated and neglected anything else than retouching. Both mentioned changes from recent versions are departure from landscape usage. Can they afford to be niche software at that price? Sure. They RAISED price by 56% since previous years.
12:05 -> Cropping. What a bummer! Yes, they manage to somehow glue images together, they even give few options for projection, but no attention to edges of what-so-ever. Again even Adobe added more feature rich option 5 years ago. Not to mention there are again FREE options on the market that are more refined and with more options, but also have proper edge solution. Not only autocrop, but also content aware fill of black areas.
13:10 -> The quality of stitches are again on level of free smartphone apps. No further comments needed, from such an expensive software. And considering you did panorama frames properly ... When I need to expand my view on event or do panorama portrait, frames are far from ideal; parallax, me not being still, people moves, camera roll or pivot... useless feature. It drives me MAD!
I'm disappointed even more so, because this software is more expensive than all the competition combined! Yet they added features less capable and refined than free options on the market.
Wireless tethering: I do not use it, not be able to for Pentax. They avoid Pentax ... someone will say "since when binoculars shoot images", but yeah, they actually produce a digital camera every decade or so. So niche camera manufacturer, expected to be neglected. But WHY on earth than they added Pentax 645Z camera in 2021 (in version 21.1)? A camera from 2014!! We know why they did not add the camera sooner, since it used exactly same sensor than their own IQ250, that was 3x more expensive and 645Z was rewarded as best medium format camera in 2015 by TIPA. So why they added it now? Maybe because for the last few version they worked only on Fuji and since Fuji also build MF camera around that same sensor (the 50 MP), they finally lost their fear of competition from a 50 MP Pentax and they added it. As DxO-mark added it to the list of ranks years after release, only after Hasselbladt finally tweaked their X1D-50c to a point above 645Z.
It is safe to say, that they worked hard on wireless tethering and maybe performance improvements (I could not test it, since I can't install on my 300k images computer). But than they slammed two mediocre features inside to raise attention from others and than do a rushed-pre-upgrade sale, to make people grab for an upgrade, before they would see what they are getting. It really seems that was the intention, since this time BETA was not available until the pre-upgrade period was over. Next day, they gave beta for version 22. This is really dodgy move from Phase One, this time. I was so mad I started to look elsewhere. WHEN they would do something about DAM part of software?!
19:25 -> I asked the team why they raised prices so much? The reply "because we constantly develop software". LOL, since they are doing that since version one. They have issues to be fixed. Like I can't understand why they do not add shortcuts to crop modes as it is to every other feature or tool. Asked so many times.
20:00 -> those features are not "rough around the edges", but useless for most users. A smart phone app from sole programmer would be like this, hoping for few coins of income. Any serious software developer thinks twice before releasing half baked stuff; even more so in this competitive world. They act like gods, exactly how Adobe did a decade ago. Yeah we are able to test it. For hefty sum of money! If that would be FREE update to test it and report back, I would be more than glad to do it, like I did always; it would made added value and reason of using their software. And when perfected, it would come into next version, for upgrade price. But this time the new features were presented as "reason to upgrade". I am prepared to pay for something I can have benefit straight out of the box; when someone else did the research and tuning for me. When I need to evaluate, seek solutions and workaround, that is not professional tool anymore, and I'm not paying it. (I have) same issue with Topaz tools: they are fine, I see future there, but far from finished product, and not worth my money. I like helping developers with feedback. But I do not like to pay for the privilege to do it. Finally: PhaseOne screwed with this 6 months update timeline. Also I think 18 months was the best possible between version period, to prepare, develop, debug, beta test and release.
It's NOT worth buying upgrade. I'll still use my previous tools. What hard it is to export TIFF, use external tool, import back?
THANK YOU FOR YOU TIME spent for this review. I liked watching it.

If you release something “good enough” for a reasonable set of customers, you at least have released something and can chip away over the next few weeks/months and then release lots of bug fixesuntil you satisfied enough customers to buy.
I’m not saying they are right to do this. It’s just how software tends to get released. I guess it works as most software companies do it … some more than others.
