X-Men 97 hasn’t dropped the ball once but last week’s episode “Remember It” was easily the best the show has been… so far! Featuring blistering action, engrossing love triangles and well-executed themes that cut to the core of this team, X-Men 97’s mid-season chaos, that could have easily been a finale to a lesser Marvel show, has lit the screen and given us the biggest stakes to a superhero tale since Endgame. So strap in, prep the jet for take off and come with me to Genosha because I want to break down what led us to Gambit’s greatest moment and his ultimate sacrifice!

In chess, a gambit is a sacrifice to gain an advantage usually to protect and advance the queen. In this case Gambit made the ultimate sacrifice. A very poetic symbolism. A bittersweet moment. That is why this episode for me cuts deep and now you know why he is my favorite X-Men and even my favorite Marvel character of all time.
Oh my god..."to protect the queen"...
Throughout the episodes rogue has been symbolised as the queen of hearts card... this show is genius
holy shit you blew up my mind
Like reading the Bible. The name tells the story.
He was always about sacrificing himself for physical contact with rogue. Note the HIV AIDS messaging from the 90s. Down to having a mom that put her out and a surrogate mom who turned out to her sugar daddy. The PTSD is strong in this show.
@@hermzgacho8548 Shut up
This is peak 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷
"Sugar, I can't feel you" made me legit tear up. The whole episode was amazing, and that line delivery is the cherry on top. It made the episode PERFECT
Very reminiscent of Wanda facing Vision's remains in Wandavision, and her trying to touch his forehead and crying while saying "I can't feel you, Viz"
This show is illegal. Nothing is allowed to be this fantastic. And this episode is badass, heartbreaking and everything we needed
Magneto as a holocaust survivor seemingly sacrificing himself by standing between the oppressor and the oppressed while telling a child, in German, “don’t be afraid” was an absolute gut punch, incredible writing.
X-men 97 is a gift
Facts
Funny story, I never watched the original series so I went into this with no prior knowledge of what happened in the original. But then in the credits if the first episode, I found out they played Ace of Base in the credits. Went to the music video and the top credits were literally just about the show and one spoiled Gambit’s death. I thought “wtf! I thought they only played the song in the first episode!”
Oh you poor thing

There are versions of Logan that would have gleefully jumped on the chance Jean gave. I'm genuinely grateful the version I grew up with shut that door hard, for no reason other than the fact that it ain't right and her and scott need to work things out.
An honest man with morals and who knows that he can’t get involved like that
It s based on the Grant Morrison run of x men, where wolverine actually turns down jean at some point, and opnely shows respect towards scott.
I always question Logan's mental health when I rralize he is into Jean.
That's like being turned on by grey cold muss...
yeah hes also a samurai he knows a lot about honor so im glad that this wolverine actually has respect and honor for the team
I’ve been saying that the sentence “The name’s Gambit, mon amis. Remember it!” is going to be surest way, in years to come, to makes guys in their 30s and 40s who grew up with the ‘90s show say “No I’m not crying there’s something in my eye.”
I didn't grew up watching this show. I don't feel the nostalgia. But watching X-Men 97 first time and this episode. I'm sold. It's the goated X-Men show I've seen so far. And the 90s character design was a nice touch.
I’m 21 and never watched the original series but after watching episode 5 I went back and watched the entire 90’s show and every single time he said said “the names gambit, remember it” I had to hold the tears back. 😭
Why is it wrong for men to cry?
That doesn't Sound like healthy masculinity
Man, Gambit was my first love in the 90's show and my favorite x-men ever since. I always feel the writers are not sure what to do with him, he's the kind of character that's too cool for his own good.
I hate that until this ep, so many people dismissed him. He's a wonderfully complex character that always gets underestimated in comics, at Marvel, and in general.
@@jayjaybee well, I get It. Every time he's put on a team on the comics the writer proceeds to do nothing with him (see Excalibur). He's only on the team to: be generic explosion guy, pretend to be a traitor or steal some plot relevant thing... But never to be the focus. Rogue&Gambit 2023 had him at his best, but man it was too short.
It sucks because he also doesn’t have an official LEGO minifigure of him to use in my work in progress Genosha attack MOC. Damn shame, he’s been my favorite X-Man right beside Nightcrawler and Ice-Man.
I watched the entire MC up to Endgame, and the only X-Men content I’ve interacted with is 97.
Nightcrawler became my favorite hero in like 3 episodes. The writing in this show is so fucking good.
The Sentinel design is right out of the destruction of Genosha in E is For Extinction. Hopefully we see more of Frank Quitely’s design work in the rest of the season, like the nano-sentinels from the same comics.
Nobody wants nano-sentinels but you! Throw that mess all the way out!
@@jerfuhrer2581 yeah!!! what the REAL fans want is the omega sentinels from ZERO TOLERANCE. marvel's own OMAC rip off.
@@pathevermore3683 Nah, we don't want them either! Hahahaahahah
I totally agree that some deaths do need to stick and that Gambit’s end was perfect… but he was so damn cool throughout this whole episode that I need him back
I feel really certain he's coming back.
Interviews with the voice actor and episode 6 seem to imply...certain things. That and the imagery that's used in episode 6 to reflect some things that happen in the comics.
I actually feel kind of grateful that the show move so quickly that they already may be gluing us into that... Unless I see them set ablaze or put in a coffin and buried, I don't buy that they're gone.
And even then in the Marvel universe there are still ways for people to reappear...
@@CM-yz3ze yeahhh, someone needs riders
It's a good thing we know he revives because of the Spider-Man show that set further in the timeline
@@CM-yz3ze Some bad news for you after this last episode.... I do think he's coming back in some capacity tho
If I remember correctly, in the comics, he comes back as a horseman of Apocalypse before gaining control of himself again
Emma Frost’s expression after getting booted out of Madeline and Scott’s psyche is so funny.
She had her own mental Soap Opera between The Summers.
Have never seen X-Men series since I was born in 2000 and while I enjoyed the X-men films growing up. Batman and spiderman were my shit. But man oh man is X-men 97 blowing my mind and showing me why it was so beloved.
Same here! Jumped in without watching the previous show, but MAN DOES IT STILL DELIVER AS ITS OWN THING
The original X-Men: The Animated Series was definitely a product of its time. It's pretty dated by modern standards, and the level of self-censorship to meet kids' TV standards of the time seems pretty silly these days. But MAN, it was unapologetically "comic book-y". X-Men '97 is what that show would have been without the all the limitations.
@@Pit_Wizard Not only unapologetically "comic-book-y", but often way more accurate than was necessary. Watching X-Men: TAS to catch up for the new series, the thing that stuck out to me the most is how willing they were to include some of the more convoluted parts of the comics and making them still work. Mystique's family tree is the sort of bonkers thing that they'd have been well within rights to simplify or remove entirely, but they made whole episodes about how Graydon Creed was actually the son of Sabretooth and Mystique, and Nightcrawler also being Mystique's son once they got around to him. They also had a whole episode with the whole "Rogue stealing Ms. Marvel's powers" thing - again, something that would have been understandable to completely ignore, but they chose not to.
@@einootsporkI agree! Always appreciated how close to the MU the original series was. I think that's part of what makes '97 the perfect revival material: they can really cover any angle from the comics they want with this version. The characters are literally from the page. I told my wife going into this, before I'd even seen it: "This is what X-Men is really like... Buckle Up."
We were not disappointed.
I cried for like 10 minutes after this episode ended, it's poetic and invokes it's theming masterfully
Going over this episode again for sure did not make my cry again....youre crying im not crying..
Yeah it just got super dusty in my apartment all of a sudden.
It's a terrible day for rain.
"One of the most SINISTER sentinels we have ever seen" - Funny how that turned out. You noticed it before realizing who was behind it.
That was by design 😏
I noticed in episode 3 when Gambit is having his nightmare/hallucination that Rogue says she found a "real man and hero" in Magneto. Though Gambit doesn't believe himself to be a hero, I feel like this is subtle foreshadowing to him being the ultimate hero of Genosha.
Professor X's final words in the old show to Gambit were something along the lines of "how many times do you have to be a hero to believe it"...damn, i guess he still doesn't...
Sad to see that his nightmare ended up being true. Not the part about him not being a "real man and hero", he is that. Now, more than ever. Moreso the Rogue thing ended up being very real.
@@sauce2514 I don't think she ever got back with magneto in that way. She broke up with him for good after the break, she joined him later because she wanted to punish humanity for killing Gambit, not because she wanted to get hot with Magneto again.
In the final episode of the season Rogue leads off with "His name was Gambit, remember it"
One great thing about this episode that kight not have been intentional is the song of choice. Of course Happy Nation makes sense due to the main characters celebrating Genosha entering the UN, but the song also has a somewhat unsettling intro and instrumental, giving the feeling that something’s not quite right, which perfectly leads into Cable’s appearance and the destruction of the island.
The white tux should become his regular outfit.
Only for special occasions Mon ami
Gambit was my first crush as a kid lol lil 6yr old me would finish watching X-Men every Saturday morning then run around telling everyone I was going to marry Gambit when I grow up....
That's funny, I had a crush on Nightcrawler since I was 6.
pause but night crawler is like a laxative in this episode making things flow so well
And now we get to see more of him as a member of the X-Men this season! I hope he stays on the team, he’s such a cool character and his battle sequences can be really fun with the other X-Men
The "Kaiju" Tri-Sentinel is straight out of the conics, used as a weapon by Cassandra Nova to enact a similar massacre on Genosha.
Almost teared up while watching this. This just shows how good the show is.
It also has made me aware how hard it is to adapt the melodrama, soapy undercurrent of this series into film.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the MCU : "Wooooh, Immaboutomakeanameformyself !"
With MvC fighting collection, XMen 97, and now Deadpool & Wolverine, 2024 is the year of the X-Men, and also of the Gambit revival !
Gambit was an Omega level mutant when he was a boy but couldn’t control his power hence he asked the famous surgeon Nathaniel Essex/Mr. Sinister to nerfed him to just the Alpha level that we all know now. In his omega level he was like Dr. Manhattan. He can control all kinetic energy in molecular level, travel through space, heals, control gravity, nuclear energy blast etc. he was known as New Sun.
I began watching the original show back in January just slowly making my way through it because I knew 97 was going to be released sometime this year. I'd tried multiple times to get into the original show in the past because I heard it was one of the greats like Batman TAS, and just couldn't do it, but I was going to soldier on this time. I was about halfway through when 97 began in the middle of March, I wasn't too concerned with Spoilers, but I wasn't actively looking out for them either. I started to pick up the pace though when I started hearing just how amazing the show was. I found the original series to really just be okay to good at its best, I'm sure 90s censorship was affecting things although I was rather impressed at times with what they did do from time to time, Nightcrawler's episodes being some of the best and surpassing the just good barrier. But when I finally started 97, man, it was on a whole other level. I finally get it now, I get why people like the X-Men. I will forever be one of those people that just isn't going to read comics, I just know that's how I'll be, and I never watched the X-Men movies as they were coming out in the 2000s, I was very much a Raimi Spider-Man kid, so I just never had this outstanding love for the characters, I just didn't really get it, but it all makes sense now. And sure, they're adding in the necessary context needed in 97 to understand what's happeing, but I am so glad that I watched the original series beforehand. Episode 5 hit in such a way I'm sure it wouldn't have had I just jumped 5 years into the story. Gambit was one of the best characters and now I'm in major denial because I'm waiting for Cable and/or Bishop to come in and undo it all so that at the very least he can live. And The Watcher was in the sky! That should have clued me in something really important was about to happen, but man, I was not expecting this. I originally had things scheduled in such a way that I'd have watched X-Men 97 a bit after it would have wrapped up. I'd be able to just watch the episodes one day after the next, but now I'm up to date, and I hate that I have to wait week to week, but I'm glad I didn't have anything spoiled for me (except for the original series finale because of the trailer), and can now engage with other fans on the same playing field. The action has been phenomenal, the characters have never been better, the stories are great (I even liked a Mojo episode, WHAT?!), it's a blast!
Love the positive turn in your videos! Celebrating great content and helping you with the algorithm!
Thanks so much!!
Gambit dying is BOGUS...he has always been my favorite character
This episode put a hole in me like Omni-Man's fist through the Immortal. Absolutely stellar show.
With how well written the show’s been so far it makes Beau’s firing incredibly awkward 😂. Hopefully, they do a James Gunn and rehire him. I just hope with Captain America popping up later on that his appearance doesn’t contradict his appearances in Spider-Man TAS. Sure the continuity in the 90s marvel cartoons wasn’t perfect but they at least have to honour 90s Spider-Man the most considering they crossed over once and Storm appeared in Secret Wars.
I completely understand the desire to not want deaths to feel cheap by constantly bringing people back to life. And Gambit was amazing in this episode and did go out like a boss.
That being said, I genuinely feel like there is more of Gambit's story to tell (and I don't mean untold comic stories). Yeah, maybe he got a cool death, but it happened before he really had a chance to grow. "How often must the scoundrel prove himself the hero before he believes it himself?" His biggest flaw is feeling like he's not good enough and that others are more important, and he quite literally died right after Rogue chose Magneto over him (not knowing about her change of heart) and sacrificing himself to make sure Rogue and everyone on the roof stayed safe. The audience recognizes that Gambit was a hero, but nothing in the story hints that Gambit ever realized this about himself.
(...also Gambit has been one of my favorites since 1992, and him staying perma-dead would likely ultimately cause me to lose interest, and I don't want that. XD)
just off of the top of my head there is the idea that apocalypse will make him death or we eventually get to krakoa and the 5 can resurrect him. both would be earned and lore appropriate resurrections that absolutely would not diminish his death here.
I am conflicted about bringing Gambit back, on one hand he is a great character who is always fun to watch on screen with so much potential for future stories or episodes, but on the other, that same missed opportunity is what gives his death so much weight and impact, it wouldn't be as raw without it.
In my opinion no matter how well he is brought back, (and I certainly wont complain if that does happen) it will forever reduce the impact of this episode on repeat viewings (which I most certainly will be doing).
Gambit the coolest Xmen of them all Remember It.
The only gambit in years
I’m hoping there’s a time loop scenarios where all of this shit gets undone, but Gambit went out like a fuckin gangsta. The twists and turns of this series is just mind blowing. I’m so grateful to be old enough to appreciate old and no they tie it into what we have today.
I’m kinda thinking we’re looking at one of those scenarios where even if they go back in time to save everyone they’re still gonna have to sacrifice someone in the end whether that’s Magneto or Gambit
@@DarkKnightofAnime i think gambit will die no matter what happens, like him dying to save people is a fixed point. whether cable changes the past or gambit ends up a horseman, he will sacrifice himself
You hope that there is a timeloop scenario? Jesus Christ 😂
@@adoniscreed4031 it is what it is Donnie. It’s just kinda crazy to watch everybody get nerfed in the first 5 episodes of a series fam. 😂
I’m gonna be behind everyone else anyways because I watch it on Saturday mornings with a big ass bowl of cereal just like God intended.
It's a comic book show. Gambit is *definitely* coming back somehow.
Fun fact: Gambit becomes Apocalypse’s Horseman of Death in the comics after an attack on Genosha.
After watching the whole season, this is still my favorite one. I'm glad they didn't bring Gambit back and take away from his sacrifice.
That said, I hope they find a way to bring him back next season.
The music gave me goosebumps once it stopped
I started my introduction with Avengers Earth Mightiest Heroes (ty youtuber Pillar of Garbage youtube channel, for letting my relive that amazing cartoon), that was my beginning with marvel and i was enthralled with comics and superheroes. I never fully had watched the Xmen 90s cartoon, only episodes as a one off. Disney plus re-releasing all of the old and early 2000s cartoons has me reliving my childhood joy, fascination, and emotions.
When this show was announced, i decided, now it was time to watch the Original, and i watched all the episodes, and now i have caught up with Xmen97 and with them adapting Grant Morrisons run, the writer that saved the Xmen, now having his era defining works adapted into glorious animation. Hope for good story telling in non-comic book from has returned. Animation (from not anime) is back in all its glory and i am here to relive the joys my childhood self had!
Nightcrawler is my absolute favorite, along with Kitty.

what's sad is if apokalypse is going to appear gambit might come back but not as gambit
You can do an entire show about the writing. When you watch the entire series again you realize different characters say the same lines and different situations The whole thing is poetic
Everytime I think of that ending with Rogue crying still not being able to feel Gambit makes me tear up everytime.

That trailer did a great job. It felt even better hearing cyclops in the show and now Gambit 🤯 i was *shook*
I'm so invested in xmen 97 what has taken marvel so long to produce another gem. All i can do is praise them now that there's more quality content for us
This has kind of gone under appreciated but this show is the coolest cyclops has maybe ever been

I believe kaiju Sentinel that may have actually been a reference to the Tri-Sentinel, a gigantic, enhanced magical fusion of three different Sentinels created by Loki at the tail end of the _Acts of Vengeance_ campaign to destroy New York City. It was so ludicrously powerful that it took Spider-Man infused with the _Uni-Power_ of Captain Universe to defeat it.
At least, that was the first thought _I_ had as soon as I saw its triple-faced head; it sure _looked_ like the Tri-Sentinel.
I do wonder how well TH-cam premieres work for viewership. I've often missed videos because I have notifications turned on for a channel, but just get notified for the premiere, that I'm not interested in, and only end up coming back if it happens to be served up by the whims of the algorithm.

Yeah I’m not sure either! First few hours for this hasn’t been too good, maybe my next video I should just drop
We're getting Death's Gambit holy shit
7:47, Ironically, the magnetic barrier Magneto uses to allow Rogue to touch him can also be read as a metaphorical barrier of superficiality in their relationship, as they are primarily attracted physically to each other, not emotionally. We see how Rogue, Jean and Madelynn look for physical intimacy to compensate for a lack of emotional intimacy, while Logan, Scott and Remi deeply value the emotional connections they have with others (which in Scott’s case is what draws him back to Madelynn, as while she may have been artificial, he still new for some time and even had a child with her).
11:00, Since time travel and time-based reality warping was a relatively common occurrence in the original series (including an instance where Apocalypse killing the team was erased), it’s more than likely that these events will be undone to some extent.
gambit's death is sorta similar to Rex's during the invincible war. which is great in its own way
Gambit absolutely deserved better. He deserved love and peace, and yet recieved heart break and death.
He truly loved Rogue beyond just physicality, and she wanted sexuality, only to realize after she gets it, that "oh, Gambit loved me way more, oops", too bad hes already dead.
Jean needs to be more honest with Scott and herself, after she pined after Logan moments before finding out about Scott and her own clone
Scott ain't been the same since Madelyne told him to say her name

Gotta feeling they're going to Days of Future Past/Age of Apocalypse this and reset it (Cable's time travel in this case) but Gambit's death was essentially doing the same thing he did in Ultimate X-men vs Juggernaut to save Rogue (though it was much, MUCH cooler in the show).
