A brief look at Marvel's new "SPIDER-MAN" show on Disney-Plus; which has improbably survived an (apparent?) late-coming switch-up from being an official MCU prequel-series to yet another (maybe?) multiverse project, a dimwit voice actor's "relief" at the final product NOT being "annoying and woke" and inevitable unfair comparisons to "X-MEN 97" to somehow emerge as ...an actually pretty cool teenage superhero cartoon; remixing some of the most familiar characters and backstory-beats in the genre with a handful of deft new swerves and inspired "Oh, I know who THAT is ... or do I?" touches that makes for a fun web-slinging romp (at least over the course of the 5 episodes released at the time of this posting.)

That guy's called Hudson Thames? That can't be his real name. Is his middle name Nile?
His Romney-style online alter ego is Chad Laguna
It looks like that's hies real name. His dad is "Byron", some minor tv actor.
TH-camr words they ain't anymore unfortunately. I live in Melbourne Australia, was waiting for a haircut at my barber, and the guy getting his haircut before me was talking about his trip to California over Christmas, and he literally said out loud he found the state to be very "woke" as a shorthand for inclusive and progressive that he then went on to be against. It's in the linguistic lexicon now unironically and it's so cringy to hear.
I feel like “woke” has mushroomed out well beyond the specific reference to the political left and progressive ideals, and is now for disparaging and dismissing anything even a little thoughtful.
I'm really interested in seeing what they do with Nico Minoru. You don't just throw her in the series and make her one of Peter's closest friends and then ignore her traditional back story.
last time I was this early there was still game overthinker episodes
Edit: okay. to be fair, at this point Mark Hamil is the bench mark for all Jokers, so I'm not disappointed in Willem Dafoe being the Norman Osborne benchmark
I specifically have been avoiding watching this because of that quote about it “not being woke”.
If someone feels the need to bring it up like that, definitely puts my Spider-Sense on high alert.
Second-most woke (complimentary) mainstream Spider-Man thing ever, most likely.
And of course we're back to right-wing grifters embarrassing themselves by trying to cosplay as Marvel fans while showing that they only have the thinnest of surface-level knowledge about the characters and stories.
I was surprised when I got to the end of episode 3 and 4 auto-played. Getting two episodes on launch was standard, but releasing the rest in chunks possibly makes sense for a show aimed at kids. Let them binge a little on a Saturday morning.
Even with all the changes, I'm loving the series. Not rolling out all the usual villains in the first season is a nice touch, and they've already been renewed for two more seasons so they can play a longer game. It will be interesting to see what they do with some of the supporting cast, but I'm not expecting full book accuracy.
Yay, all part of the plan. Just like CRT and DEI, "Woke" has lost all meaning.
The voice actor has obviously been listening to too many online podcasts if he really went with a "hurr durr annoying and woke" quote. But I agree with Bob that aside from that glaring dumbness it's a pretty decent cartoon so far.
I feel that woke was always a derogatory slur used to shame people, like calling someone or something a communist, or a hippy, or stupid, or gay, or a nerd, or the r word.
Good to hear that Hudson Thames is not hateful dumb, just amusingly dumb.
I think the jury remained out.
You can't believe how easy it is to replace an actor. Now, imagine how easy it is to replace a voice actor ;D
There is no proof either way.
I wish they would have kept making spectacular Spider-Man
100% agree, the cameo in across the spider-verse was good but disappointing reminder
Unfortunately, it's been too long and I'm not sure if the lawyers are backing off.
I'm surprised they didn't get a younger actor and use that to spin in to secret wars by having a switch where the toon character gets ported to non toon via a portal into secret wars.
Either way, good solid show.
And lol to dipshit calling it non woke. Like, his best friend is Asian. J Jonah isn't WHITE. on and on.
I honestly think "is what i made any good?" Is a valid thing for any actor to think. I mean "is it annoying and woke" is probably the most annoying way he could have said it. But i think people are reading too much into it.
wtf your head is so big in the video but the audio sync is so off
First time I heard of this controversy. And I don't know why they changed the show so it's not part of the MCU Sacred Timeline.
Probably because it would have severely limited what stories they could tell
@@jesselfergusonMore than likely the case. And that's good, just let them do their own thing.
It becomes almost enjoyable to see the in-fighting between Internet weirdos who get off on calling everything they hate "woke" while having very different standards for what qualifies.
Apparently Hudson Thames was also the voice of Spider-Man in the "What If...?" series, so he had been voicing Spider-Man for quite a bit. Gotta say, I'm disappointed that he ended up being one of *those* guys, if he was genuinely worried about the show being "annoying and woke".
Edit: doubly so if there happens to be elements in this show that would traditionally fall under what "woke" is, so he's just one of those people who just uses "woke" to say anything he doesn't like, thus the word is even more meaningless than it is now.
Its cognitive distortion. A ton of the right wing chuds wouldn't actually be right wing chuds if they weren't absolutely cocooned in propaganda that makes them think progressive culture is crazy far left.
Maybe I'm giving the guy too much credit, but is it possible he was just trying to (And maybe even encouraged to) kind of gently pre-empt the sadly inevitable "Hurr durr this is woke crap" wave/campaign? Like i know Disney/Marvel has done good, if admittedly kind of shallow and calculated, job of prodding those types of dipshits but i wouldn't put it past any media corporation to want to retain any viewers they can?
Bob,
Please bring back The Game Overthinker
Honestly I hate the costume. I can't get past it. If my nephew asks I'd watch the show with him, but otherwise I'll ignore the series.
IMO, in context of the full quote, it sounds like he doesnt know what woke means. And i dont mean like most people who say 'woke' wouldnt be able to define it, but that he heard a bunch of people say it and understood the word to be synonymous with something closer to cringe or cheesy.
I'm on a 5th episode. It is interesting. My daughter and I watch it together.
Well done, Bob. And thank you for not shying away from the problematic Tweet. Most people are just ignoring it.
I noticed the hardcore racists had quite the campaign of hate for this show.
i did not like the show, the shellshade animation is not as good as X-men '97 or What if?
i'm also disappointed that it is not a prequel to the Tom holland spider-man movies.
i don't feel like watching the show till the end. i'v only seen 3 episodes
His comment about "woke" really highlights a huge thing here where people who wouldn't actually be all that right wing have this super distorted idea of what being progressive actually is. So you've got someone with maybe one dumbass opinion that they'll likely grow out of over time, but because of the media landscape around them distorting their point of view, they think they're super far to the right of progressive culture.
You can see this in action in other places, but his comment really highlights it.
01:37 This just in Bill Maher to host new show named Woked... maybe 3 people on here will get that joke.
I just want spiderman to crossover with Moon girl and Devil dinosaur
I want Disney to stop being cowards and release the trans athlete episode.
@@jordanloux3883 I just want Disney to stop race swapping classic characters before The MCU starts looking like A blaxploitation movie.
@@Launchpad05 Maybe Marvel fans should embrace new minority characters instead of calling them DEI replacements so they can stop being forced to race swap characters for representation.
@@Launchpad05 Found the drone.
I'm loving it it's fun high energy but still got some emotional weight. I'm definitely loving lonny can't wait to see how he turns into tombstone
It does feel like they're giving Lonny the 'tragic villain' story arc this time around. I won't give any spoilers, but the guy just wants to do the right thing.
So did Sony finally relinquish all rights to Spider-Man back to Marvel/Disney?
Nope. They still have an iron grip on certain parts of the IP. That's why there's no Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy in this series.
@@AndrewMcColl Oh, I didn't know that, I haven't watched the show yet. Thanks for the info!
Nah, Marvel had the TV animation rights all the time.
@@AndrewMcColllol, nope
Always more Moviebob!
Aside from Spidey’s VA being a dumb guy, my only beef with this show is that it’s doing that awful cel-shaded 3D thing that makes it look like cutscenes from Ultimate Spider-Man for the Xbox and PS2.
That… never looks good. This should have been animated in 2D and getting a new X-Men cartoon in 2D makes this sting all the more.
The X-Men show is in 3D.
Only watched the first episode, didn’t bother watching the series.
It looks like it's trying way too hard to be cool to me. Spider-verse is effortlessly fun and cool, this doesn't look appealing to me,
I like it so far
Brush your hair or cut it shorter
This show felt like an apology for the lackluster previous two Spider-Man shows. It's just as good as MTV's Spider-Man and if it keeps up, could be almost as good as Spectacular Spider-Man. Such a refreshing take on the Spidey mythos. I hope it gets more seasons when it's done.
📺
Invinsible S3 is back and I'm loving the first 3 eps. Thank goodness I'm not watching YFNSM.
Comment for the algorithm!
'Spectacular Spider-Man' is still the best 'Spider-Man' cartoon, and no other cartoon since then can come close to it. Change my mind.
I cannot
💜‼️‼️💜
The show plays too fast and loose with established lore, and I’m sick and tired of hearing some numb nuts shout “Multiverse” at me to care. If you start thinking, you should screw with the uncle Ben part of Spider-Man, you’re wrong.
Literally Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) "screwed with the uncle Ben part" and it's some of the best Spider-Man storytelling ever.
@ no I haven’t read those comics, and to be honest that sounds terrible and stupid.
If I was interested in “not Spider-Man” I’d read something else. Or a different spider themed character I don’t need every version of Spider-Man to be different from the one before. I actually can get new things without the prism of Spider-Man, I have an actual life.
Clearly
@mistercard3599 you're missing out bud.
Western comic book story telling is self destructive. It is trapped with less than a dozen Big Properties none of which are allowed to die . These Properties according to many people including you cannot change any aspect of the character they are based on. So limited Properties, limited story telling, people rapidly run out of reasons to come back to experience them.
I like the way Bob tries to rewrite history here. "Politically incorrect" did not mean "trying too hard," it basically meant the opposite of what was considered woke back in the 80s, 90s, and early 00s, because back then adhering to the left's language and behavior policing was being politically correct, the term itself having its origin in the Soviet Union.
“I used it” - seriously, that’s the way he used it, like the way that the guy used “woke” incorrectly. He’s just saying the word doesn’t really mean anything anymore because it’s just used as a filler for “bad”. Go touch grass man.
"the term itself having its origin in the Soviet Union"
All the more reason you should have disregarded people who whined "politically correct" back then just like you should disregard people who whine "woke" now.
Funny as the OP and the actor both have no clue what "woke" means, and are just regurgitating what the Alt Right say.
Being "woke" is a term in the African American community describing waking up to the systemic obstacles in society designed to hold us back from the success that other receive. Example, having the exact same qualifications and credit score but being denied mortgage or even rent opportunities due to redlining designed to keep blacks out of certain neighborhoods. Example, demolishing the black encampment to build Central Park. Example, share cropping ended up being paid slavery. Example, 40 acres and mule promise being immediately broken and the land the government had set aside for the promise being given to former slave owners at a subsidized price. Example, private (charter) schools taking the money for public education and then only allowing the students they want in their classrooms entry plus a couple token minorities.
He misspoke. Unclench.

Time for Bob to argue with the haters again.
Might as well make a 90 minute video essay about how everything from Charles dickens to the lone ranger to superman to wonder woman to Charlie Brown to Rock tor Disco to Rap to Jazz to EVERY WORTHWHILE COMEDIAN EVER to Star Trek to Star Wars to terminator to Indiana Jones to X-men to Gargoyles to every damn good and worthwhile thing anyone geeks out about is liberal, progressive, anti racist, and antifascist.
I would a love a 90 Bob rant called "the History of Woke and why it's good".
I am not even being sarcastic. I want that.
But I am still the guy that says "Captain Marvel was a shitty movie". So he probably skips me thinking I am a neckbeard menanist incel rather than a liberal progressive with VERY high standards.
