I never even knew Cyclops could be cool until I watched 97. His fighting style in the show is so much more dynamic and interesting than in the movies, and also it shows an understanding that Cyclops's eye beam is NOT a "laser", it's a concussive blast and THAT is what makes it such a versatile weapon.
My favorite Cyclops moments have to be 1. When Cyclops states the reasoning behind the costumes "We have to Astonish them" due to them being SUPERHEROES. 2. When Magneto and Xavier give Cyclops the mission to destroy the Master Mold system located near the sun and he simply states "it will be done" with no hesitation.
4:15 Cyclops breaks his fall with his optic blasts in Xmen Evolution as well. I believe it was finale of the first season. Totally loved the Xmen 90s series too as a kid, and all the support this new series is getting is great! We can all have our favorite interpretation of the character, and my personal favorite Scott Summers is from Xmen evolution. Completely shared your opinion about Cyclops being the leader until I saw that series. In a series about people growing up like the Xmen, there are hardly ever stories of them actually in school growing up. Xmen Evolution had Xavier gather students to the institution one by one. Scott was one of the older kids that looked out for everyone being the uptight "Dad" of the group. From baby sitter to even the little things like logistics--Scott could pilot the X-wing while teaching a younger student how to pilot it like older brother would and mentioned charting the destination with the FAA on a trip to recruiting another student. (Really specific thing to remember, but that stood out to me back then as someone into Aviation. Imo you wanna be leader of the Xmen, you gotta be straight with the FAA jk) Prof X even commended him, "well done son. You're growing up." You really saw Scott-- evo-- mature into a leader and earn that spot.
Yea and him and Alex did that after being juiced up by Magneto on Asteroid M I believe. They also used their powers full blast to completely obliterate that same Asteroid
Cyclops has always been my favorite X-Men. And honestly, one of my favorite comic characters. Yes, movies hasn't got him right, but other media has. X-Men Evolution, Whedon's Astonishing X-Men, Marvel vs Capcom. Love the shine he's getting now.
Cyclops being sidelined while criminal, wasnt exacly unfounded. He was very few people's favorite X-Man. He was the least interesting member of his family tree. Then you have Wolverine The Face of the X-Men. The most popular character in Marvel next to and sometimes surpassing Spidey. Its no surprise the 2000s movies were Wolverine centric and Scott was...just there. Yet, I dont recall anyone being too pressed about how Cyclops was being underused at the time.
@@Hillthugsta He was a favourite among comic fans, I don't read X-Men, (aside from the odd Wolverine solo comic) you don't really find it on the surface level of CBM posts or videos, but you will find a lot of comic fans who surprisingly have Scott ranked as their number 1 favourite hero, and if not that, he's their favourite X-Men, this has been the case for as long as I can remember reading comics, but it was real diehard fans that were of that opinion. My favorite aspect of cyclops is exactly because of how you describe the characters. Scott has one of the more basic and simple powers, but when he’s written right he still is a big enough badass to prove why he’s the leader, he’ll beat your ass
The last best cyclops was probably the one from X-Men: Evolution. Scott was perfect in that big brother role, responsible but still a little childish. I think making him one of the teachers would've made him too stuffy and forced them to sand off all of his flaws, but his flaws are a perfect fit for an older teen.
Cyclops should be like john wick with laser eyes. Hes a brilliant strategist, excellent leader and his combat skills are severly underrated. This show has given cyclops more respect than every single X-Men film combined.
John Wick with laser eyes is exactly how he should feel. It’s weird someone like the punisher feels much cooler than him when he doesn’t even have powers 😂 Cyclops basically has a much better gun with unlimited ammo

I wish more people would bring up how pitch perfect Cyclops was in the show “X-Men: Evolution.” He was straight up the main character and was easily the most likable version of the character, period. I think a big reason why Cyclops in ‘97 works so well is because they basically ripped Scott’s personality straight from Evolution. I’m so happy people are finally showing Scott some respect but I wish people would acknowledge how good he was in XME as well
oh there’s definitely that but I think the other thing is that there’s been enough comics since where, whilst Wolverine steals the show, we have seen more from Scott in the grand scheme of things. Whilst the Morrison run has his psychic affair with Emma, that came from a lot of existential crises eg the character reflecting on his emotional constipation and his relationship with Jean. Heck, in the Krakoa era, Cyclops and Jean defy the quiet council and reform the Xmen to be world defenders and spills the beans on resurrection because he wants to establish trust with the rest of the world.

I wish X-Men Evolution was brought up in this - up to X-Men 97, Evolution probably had one of the best depictions of Scott/Cyclops and showed him breaking his fall using his beams
X-Men '97 is the best Marvel project since Endgame imo. It redeemed both Cyclops' reputation and Marvel's. It really made Cyclops seem like the guy he is in the comics.
I'm truly convinced that whoever wrote Scott in X-Men '97 played him in the Marvel VS Capcom games. This show is amazing and everything Marvel needed. If only the MCU could reflect that. Now imagine if we could get a sequel to Spiderman The Animated series in this vein. I would literally cry tears of happiness.
thank you for being another cyclops fan! he's been my fav for such a long time and gets such disrespect from my friends. They don't get that one of his super powers might just be leadership. He is a quarterback and a coach who somehow makes the world work better.
I remember one issue in the 80s where Cyclops saved Wolverine from falling several stories to his death by adjusting his optic blasts and shooting Wolverine while he fell so it “softened” his landing when he hit the ground. Thank you John Byrne!
Both Cyclops and Storm were given their just dues in X97. Storm's entrance after the sentinels warning system goes off 'omega level threat detected'... That and the 'Give em the forecast' line by Scott. Man. Rewound that sequence so many times. They really need to put across how capable and powerful both Storm and Cyclops are in the MCU movies. There's a reason they are leaders A1 and A2 for the X-Men.
X-Men '97 has gave us the best, kick ass Cyclops in years!!!! Hopefully the MCU will give Cyclops and the rest of the X-Men it deserve. Still my favorite X-Man!
Non-comic books readers really don't get Cyclops. All you need is to read him in Claremont's X-Men. Or in X-Factor. Or in Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men. Scott is arguably the best strategist in the Marvel Universe. He's even better than Captain America. He doesn't just shoot rays from his eyes. He shoots kinetic energy blasts that probably come from another dimension, meaning he's actually a nexus to a different dimension as a result of his mutation. Not only that. A secondary mutation he has is a super spacial awareness (which is why he can use his optic blasts so efficiently). That not only makes him incredibly proficient with his blasts, but also makes him an excellent hand to hand fighter. On some occasions, he got his powers temporarily removed, and he proved he's extremely badass even without them. In the alternate future of Age of Apocalypse, in which he turned into a villain, he was able to permanently cripple Wolverine, destroying one of his hands in a way that made it impossible to be regenerated. Oh, and by the way, his optic visor is used to give his optic blast precision and LIMIT its destructivity. Without it, he can easily level up city blocks with a mere look. There's a cool panel in Astonishing X-Men where the school gets attacked by sentinels and, in the heat of a the battle, he simply tells everyone to take cover, and then removes his visor, says "I want this thing off my lawn" and just VAPORIZE half the environment, trashing a sentinel in the process. Wolverine reacts by telling him that from time to time he remembers why he's the leader.
You have to understand, at the time the first X Men movies were made Cyclops hadn't been an important or relevant character in the comics for 15 years. From him coming back in X Factor in the mid 80s abd through ALL the 90s no one knew what to do with him, he got no arcs or storylines of his own. Anything to do with him was always tied to the 90s fad characters like Cable or whatnot. He really was reduced to Nothing but "Hardass leader guy who clashes with Logan" and that's it. It wasn't until the 90s were over and all those 90s fads were done and 90s characters stars' had fallen that new writers came on who disliked characters like Wolverine. This led to Cyclops undergoing his Renaissance as a character and he's been on a roll the last 20 years as a result. So adaptations now have more to work with in writing him.
Any versatility he has stems from the visor. But he is the glass cannon... Except when moving around so slick like you pointed out! I think we all forgot about the Japanese version of X-Men? Cyclops was badass in that...
The Cyclops "optic beam fall break" was one of my favourite discoveries in "xmen 2 clone wars" on the sega megadrive / genesis. Totally unnecessary to include but it was there in the best xmen game of its time that was also impossible to beat.
I always saw Cyclops and Gambit (and Jubillee if we count her) as the weak links of the team simply because of their lack of defensive feats. Everyone else on the team either has superhuman durability (Rogue, Beast, Wolverine) or has powers that could act as a protective shield/barrier (Jean, Storm, Magneto). Cyclops and Gambit are glass canons, all attack and no defense, it's hard to imagine they would last long in most fights with their stamina, mobility and durability being that of a regular human.
Cyclops was able to outmaneuver and defeat an entire team of X-men on his own. Whatever he lacks in superhuman resilience he makes up for with ingenuity, experience and tactics.
One thing that is not often explored is cyclops martial and tactical prowess. He and gambit are highly skilled and agile people, capable of compensating for their specialization. Also, comic book cyclops can actually release a small scale nuke through his eyes. So no, not a weak link.
Cyclops is an expert in all kinds of martial arts and has peak human body just like Batman. Gambit suit is defensive it can withstand bullet shots except close range shots. He is also very acrobatic and good with his stick.
@@lvo9197Though it was not explored much outside the early years, Jubes was intended to be working at peak human agility too. The X-Men interrupted a promising run as an Olympic gymnast for Ms. Lee.
@@azuresaiyan9005 Yeah that all sounds like a lot of bull slapped onto the box to sell a product, you used a lot of words to not make an actual case for Cyclops. "Peak human body" still means a human body, that could be killed by a single bullet, that you don't really have an effective way of blocking consistantly with your powers. Lets be honest, in a real life battle against Sentinals, Cyclops would probably be killed off by one of the enviromental debris flying around lol
if you've seen the original xmen anime, you know how good cyclops was. wolverine doesn't even stand a chance against him. he was way underpowered in the xmen movies.
Yes exactly! Growing up, my favourite X-Man was and still is Wolverine; however, it was always plain to me that Scott is the leader of the team, his optic blasts being one of the biggest cannons on the team and I always found his film versions incredibly disrespectful and it's so great to see the real Cyclops back in action!

I honestly do not understand why the screenwriters felt Cyclops needed to be in the first solo Wolverine movie. Just one of many bizarre decisions made in that movie.
I remember the one director apparently was a big Marvel Vs. Capcom fan whose main was Cyclops and he said he tried to get all the moves Cyclops could do in MVC2 into the show. Not all them made the cut, but that just goes to show how much of an effort went into making him actually cool again.
Ok this “he killed Xavier” part ignores a lot of context. Cyclops killed him under the influence of the Phoenix force and after the Avengers repeatedly retaliated against him even though he and the rest of his group brought world peace. All as a result of obtaining the Phoenix force which was originally meant for Hope Summers in order to restore the dying mutant race. Xavier was killed by a dark phoenix version of Scott after he kept gauding him during the battle with the Avengers.
At the end of the comic cyclops stated he takes full responsibility for the death of prof x, implying that was intentional regardless of Phoenix force influence but tbh he deserved it prof x was a shit in that comic
I'm already hyped when Cyclops use his beam to slide backward and forward during the fight. Now, they added that beam to break his fall when doing the superhero landing? My mind was thoroughly blown.
"Cyclops? All he does is slaughter every single person he loves." -My friend who has only seen the movies, when I asked him what he finds cool about cyclops
Cyclops has super strength and durability and I think immune to telepathy, and his optic beams can destroy everything and anything if his googles are off! The googles limit his power, cuz he’s afraid of destroying everything he sets his eyes on!

For any X-Men fans I'd recommend watching X-Men: Evolution. It was one of my favourite cartoons during my childhood.

Does it need doing? It will be done.
Hit em with the "Not". "Give em the Forecast."
You're growing up."
You really saw Scott-- evo-- mature into a leader and earn that spot.

Come and Get me!
X-Men '97 is not just a X-cellent comeback for the series. But it's a comeback for Cyclops after years of being sidelined.
Having been somebody who only watched the X-Men films, I always wondered what the comics did differently to the films, however, I never bothered to figure out, because every X-men comic I attempted read (Unlike most comics) just expects me to have read every mainline X-Men comic since the 1970s, so I just can't get into them, lol, but yeah X-Men comic fans love Cyclops
(I will say though, it's funny how everyone is now suddenly discovering that cyclops is actually a fleshed out character and pretending that they always hated how underused he was in the Fox films, when you NEVER saw anybody complain about that before, I feel like a lot of people are trying to fit in with the crowd, lolll)

I agree 100%. I was so excited when I saw him because Cyclops is James Marsden but they just didn't know what to do with him...
Nothing beats Evolution Cyclops though.
That was a good take the X-Men
This the Scott we all truly wanted
@@FullFatVideoshonestly you could even have Cyclops as a sniper/overwatch character. Imagine a Cyclops who fuckin snipes enemies left and right, saving his teammates from surprise attacks constantly and using his perspective e to effectively strategies the team to maximize their effectiveness.

Cyclops doesn't just have Optic Blasts but also extreme spatial awareness. It's what allows him to bounce his beams off objects (even better than Cap uses his shield most times)
Cyclops IS the Captain America of the X Men
The movie Cyclops was a fun riff on the goody-too-shoes cartoon character, but it should not have come to define the character overall. Great to see the real Cyclops is back and credit to Ray Chase for giving him that righteous 90's energy.
Cyclops was always supposed to be this cool. I'm so glad they finally are doing him justice
Speaking of Scott from Evolution, I liked the sound effect of his laser in that cartoon
Scott was never a dictator. He got a little controlly with the Phoenix Force but that's it.
Also, this was during the civil war era where the Avengers were just awful.

Cyclops was right
Joss Whedon’s run of Astonishing X-Men shows just how badass Cyclops can be.
I was introduced to X-men by X-men evolution. Cyclops was pretty cool in that one.
I’m so happy people are finally showing Scott some respect but I wish people would acknowledge how good he was in XME as well
exactly
oh there’s definitely that but I think the other thing is that there’s been enough comics since where, whilst Wolverine steals the show, we have seen more from Scott in the grand scheme of things.
Cyclops 90s cartoon was more of a boyscout/cop (no corruption or racism). That's not a bada$$ leader. This one is bold, corny, AND he can fight . I love it
@@lukaskywalker7791 90’s and Foxclops reminded me more of Brainy Smurf and how he’d get thrown out of the village because of his bragging that Papa Smurf trusted him.
Actually, I vaguely remember "X-Men Evolution" in which he landed on the ground after leaving Asteroid M, using his eye beam as thrust. It wasn't new, but this just become cooler in 97.
I just fucking love the idea that his eyes are portals to a dimension of pure kinetic energy. Allows you to do so much with him. But no one actually does anything with him.
Cyclops was also great in Marvel vs Capcom games
The Christopher Moltisanti bit “where’s my arc” had me in tears😂
Owwww!!!!
3:13 Scott is anything but a “ bad boy “ , he is the Captain America of the X-Men , he is the Boy Scout” of the team , of course he can be edgy at times, but that’s just it, X-Men 97 did him justice, this is the definitive version of Cyclops, period. The MCU must take inspiration from this show , because if or when it does we will get the best live action version of X-Men
I'm glad you're still uploading quality content despite all the hardships, keep it up!
And now Cyclops in X-Men 97 is voiced by Ray Chase (Noctis from FF XV, Master of Masters from KH series and many other roles).
I wish X-Men Evolution was brought up in this - up to X-Men 97, Evolution probably had one of the best depictions of Scott/Cyclops and showed him breaking his fall using his beams
This rendition of cyclops gives me hope for the mcu version. Make him just as badass please 🙏

Where’s the love for X Men Evolution?
He’s like captain America he just needed better writing for people to see he can be a badass
After watching the original 90s run, they definitely made him a way better character in 97.
I've always loved Cyclops. Finally, he gets his day!
Cyclops can direct his optic blast at any angle
Does Everyone Just Forget X Men Evolution?
No. Because Destiny was in it.
Lets be honest, in a real life battle against Sentinals, Cyclops would probably be killed off by one of the enviromental debris flying around lol
yo the toby and mike mix hahahahahaha wow, so good man
if you've seen the original xmen anime, you know how good cyclops was. wolverine doesn't even stand a chance against him. he was way underpowered in the xmen movies.
X-men Evolution had the best cyclops and wolverine, imo
The X-Men 97 reminded me of the Capcom X-Men vs game cyclops...

I honestly do not understand why the screenwriters felt Cyclops needed to be in the first solo Wolverine movie. Just one of many bizarre decisions made in that movie.
Cyclops shoots a concussive force, not lasers. But I agree, as my favorite X man, this is the best portrayal of him outside of Xmen evolution.
He obviously knows.
Cyclops is one of my three favourite X-men (the other two being Gambit and Rogue) and it’s so cool to see him done justice.
I hate how people bring this up like he just killed him from fun.
Also, let’s be honest; this happened after Deadly Genesis.
There was a long line of people who would’ve also wanted to take Xavier out.
At the end of the comic cyclops stated he takes full responsibility for the death of prof x, implying that was intentional regardless of Phoenix force influence but tbh he deserved it prof x was a shit in that comic
@@forgetfuldays9052 and, considering all the stories leading up to it, he had some comeuppance coming.
