How to Make Butter Knives

  • If you enjoy building stuff out of wood, you probably have scraps and cut-offs all over your shop. This project is a fun way to turn those scraps into beautiful wooden knives that can be used for butter or other soft spreads. You can make one of these knives in under an hour!

    If you make one of these, please post your pictures online and share it with me! I'd love to see how they turn out. Tag dnhandcrafted.

    Inspiration:
    My original inspiration for this project (especially the chef knife style) was a pin I saw over a year ago. I tracked it down to an amazing woodworker from Poland, “I love nature”.

    This is my first TH-cam comment - thanks for the inspiration - I was a grade A in woodwork at school and ended up doing computers for the last almost three decades, I've being looking for something to enjoy and wind down. Thank you, I now need to go out and buy a band saw and a sander.

      Martin Reilly awesome! Working as a developer and designer is what eventually pulled me toward woodworking. Building something in the physical world vs only the virtual is a good feeling.

    I don't have a shop so I don't have scraps lying around - but by golly I know where to get hold of UNLIMITED scraps. Don't have a bandsaw either. But recently I made my first spoon without ANY of the socially accepted carving tools except my SAK. Now I have a deep desire to make my own knife and fork. And bowl. And mug. By the way, my spoon is the most beautiful spoon in the whole history of wooden spoons.

      Doug I really liked your video. Its well edited and you are excited about it the content. I watch a lot of how to videos and am a avid wood worker; I have a sawmill and cut my own lumber so I know thing about wood and large amount of scraps. Right now I am turning a 1950 chicken coop 24 x 60 into my new workshop. I have sawn the siding and everything to turn it back into a usable space. I always end up with tons of scraps. Your narration of the video was excellent. I can't wait to watch some more of your videos!

    so the finish you used makes it waterproof when cleaning it?

    • @DNHandcrafted
      @DNHandcrafted  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mrlafayette1964 It’s not water proof but it helps keep the wood from drying out during washing. It wears off and needs to be reapplied, but it’s not hard to do.

    • @DNHandcrafted
      @DNHandcrafted  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Very good, I did not understand what kind of oil you use for finishing."
      I used first mineral oil (meant for use by humans), then a blend of mineral oil and beeswax. However, if mineral oil makes you feel uncomfortable, you can use any food safe finish.
      Via Google Translate: Ho usato il primo olio minerale (inteso per uso umano), quindi una miscela di olio minerale e cera d'api. Tuttavia, se l'olio minerale ti fa sentire a disagio, puoi utilizzare qualsiasi finitura alimentare sicura.

    I love the video and the finished product is gorgeous but it drives me crazy how many "simple home projects" start with "first go to your $600 bandsaw, then your $300 belt sander..." I've got hand tools and a detail sander, that's it! It would be great to have some projects which are *really* for people with entry-level kit!

    • @DNHandcrafted
      @DNHandcrafted  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, glad you enjoyed the video and final product. It doesn’t negate the point you were making, but in my case: it is a bandsaw that is older than I am I bought used for $150 and a belt sander I think I spent around $53 on at harbor freight. It takes time to acquire tools, but there are often several different ways to accomplish something.

      Hi Christine. If you purchased 1/4" stock, you could cut out the blade and handle, then cut out the scales (handle sides) to go on either side of the blade. All three of those could be cut with a coping saw. Then just glue the scales onto the blade, and use sandpaper to do final shaping. In that way you could really pull it off with just a coping saw and some sandpaper. Otherwise, most of what I did could be done with hand tools or far fewer tools than I used in this video - albeit with more work involved.

      You could pick up a used table top band saw for under 100 bucks that would cut material for knives. lots on line for sale.

    Why didn’t you use edible oil instead of mineral?

      +Rohit Sethi The way I understand it, oils like olive oil or canola can go rancid and so I wouldn’t personally use those on these knives. The mineral oil I️ used was intended do be ingested so it should be safe even if some transferred to the food. Do you have any suggestions on an oil I could have used?

    Great knife and video, but why bring religion into it?

      +Maybe Dave great question! It’s a few things. It’s an effort to keep my focus beyond myself and a single video I am making. My faith influences a large part of who I am, and I’m honestly not sure how that should play into what I produce. So the single scripture reference at the end of the video is what I have until I figure that out. That verse talks about doing what you do for the Lord and not for men.

      Sorry about the goofy characters my phone was inserting. They were just the letter I. I’ve edited the comment to remove them.
