    great job, looks perfect.. 100% I recall my first car, my brother gave me his car and I attempted to do some some body work and have someone simply spray it when I was done. lol, painter made me promise I would not tell who sprayed it as my first time body work was not the best, but being just 16 yrs old, I just wanted it on the road. Thx for the video!!

      Thanks, I know obviously not many have the tools and shop to do this stuff, but I figure it gives some insight into what’s involved in the repair process 👍🏼

    Did you ever get any idea of what caused the big rust spot?

    • @Johnnymidnight
      @Johnnymidnight  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, this was a really weird one, no idea why it rusted in such a concentrated spot

    Really great work yet again! What caused that rust spot in the first place? Just curious

      Honestly thought there would be something obvious, like a water leak, but nope, it was a strange one

    Very nice work again John! Are you talking about Blair S. , who used to live a few doors down from you, and did the restorations?

    • @Johnnymidnight
      @Johnnymidnight  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, Blair works with the rust valley guys, been on the tv show for a couple years

    What tool did you use to help shape the panel? The you held up to the tailgate and used it to compare against your new piece you made.

      I've never seen that tool before

    • @Johnnymidnight

      Not sure what they’re called, shape gauge? More commonly used in wood work, I bought mine at Princess auto for 8 bucks

    Nice job, John. I was curious how you finish the rear of the panel that you repaired. Since it seems the welds weren't able to be sealed up perfectly (as you said, thin metal, etc, plus using the fiber filler on the front of it). Doing these kinds of jobs myself, I'm always worried that they'll rust through again from the rear of the panel where there's porosity in the welds. I guess you can spray oil undercoat inside.
    Also, what's your thoughts on fixing rust in pinch welds? For example, I have a 2012 Audi Q5 with a relatively good body. I've fixed some rust before on it, but get some recurring rust on one of the rear fenders where the metal is seam pinched together (inner and outer fender). I've sandblasted the outer rust before, but it seems to keep coming back. It seems very difficult to get rid of the rust between the seam. What's your thoughts on that? Do you end up just cutting it out completely? Do you ever use any phosphoric acid based rust converters?

      I was able to reach inside on this one and clean off the backside and then prime and undercoat. Pinchwelds are tough, You just can’t get inside get rid of rust short of cutting apart, I’ve always found the best thing is, after cleaning up and painting, to soak in oil afterwards from inside so it seeps into the pinchweld. I’ve actually never used any type of rust converter.

    how long would you warranty that? just curious

    • @Johnnymidnight
      @Johnnymidnight  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’d be comfortable saying that if the area I repaired rusted or failed at any point I would take care of it

      wonder why it rusted in that location in such a significant way, while the rest of the vehicle was in good shape@@Johnnymidnight

      I expected to see a leak around the glass, or maybe an old repair causing it, but nothing 🤷🏻‍♀️

    You say you warranty your work ? Unless you can completely do away with the rust, I know I can't and no one around here warranty a rust repair ! And I do my best to seal up all the rust I can that I see around my repairs but, you know as well that it's almost impossible to stop rust, it's like many bad habits it never sleeps ! Good job as always and this is the 20th of January for me and we just got 7-8" of snow and cold I'm looking for warm weather !

    • @Johnnymidnight
      @Johnnymidnight  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always warranty everything, within reason of course. If this was to come back rusty in. Year or 2 I would be good for it for sure, 5-6 years…..hard to say….

      Yes but what about down on the bottoms of the quarter panels, that's a tough place to keep rust from starting again ?

    • @Johnnymidnight
      @Johnnymidnight  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depends on the rust, if something I’ve repaired is rusting out again, or if it’s just surface from rock chips, then it’s wear and tear

    Could be from the wiper blade throwing water on that spot... how much would you charge for such a job? I have a 1/4 inch hole on my roof near my windshield.. its not as bad as this one because i ground to metal, id like to get it cut out and a piece welded in as well

    why not just get another lift gate?

    • @Johnnymidnight
      @Johnnymidnight  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s always cost difference of repair vs replace, in this case it was definitely more cost effective to repair .
