John if those lights on the wall have a ballast in them you can change those to LED I did all of my lights to LED just like those you put in the ceiling, I noticed something different about your booth. It's so hard to get enough light to paint with ! I'm building a new paint booth for myself but I'm at a stand still I've lost one of my wheels and have to have one rebuilt. Keep up the good work and was that all in one day ?
Yep, one day, just changed the fixtures in the ceiling for the different bulbs, and sprayed the walls.Actually just ordered some better exhaust fans as well. Would love to put in a proper booth one day, but even an old used one is just too much time and money
Is that gun for a dollar or a loonie.
I guess a dollar US, or like $1.30 Canadian 😂
The plastic body filler is that a marson product?

great job and great video mate 👍👍👍👍
@@grantssmartrepairs Thank you 🙏🏼
man, you say you are not a master but your work ethic, honesty, skill and how you go above and beyond makes you more than qualified to work on 99% of vehicles. When you're dealing with rusty vehicles, customers don't expect the car to last for another 20 yrs, or at least they shouldn't. Nicely done sir, you should be proud.
Thanks so much, I appreciate your kind words! I like to be able to stand behind everything I do, within reason of course .
Tin bashers are a breed of their own just amazing..artists I guess you can say 😊 not many autobody people that i watch or know spray oil for protection but why wouldn't you especially used oil is cheap and helps prevent rust..😊
It’s something they did in one of the first body shops I worked in, and it always stuck with me. I always think about the old 50s 60s cars that had a leaky main seal, and the floors never rusted 😉
Why use glazing putty? Is it smoother to apply or easier to sand than regular body putty?
Just finer I think, so yes, I would say spreads on smoother
Thanks for the great video! Question: is there anything wrong with epoxy primer over old paint/primer? Like is there some reason why it maybe bonds better to metal but maybe worse to paint... Or is it just not necessary? This bonnet has paint chipping off on some parts due to acid rain, but not on others. So I have one half sanded with lots of bare metal exposed, but the other half I've left mostly at the old primer, with some accidental bare metal. But I'd like to just simply lay down a coat of epoxy primer over the whole thing... Does this sound reasonable? Thanks!
Totally fine, as long as it’s all properly sanded. You’ll have the mechanical adhesion to the old paint/primer, and chemical adhesion to the exposed metal 👍🏼👍🏼
Hi,love your videos, always packed with good info. I have a 2016 Sierra with the bed wheel wells and the cab corners rusting out. This has been a real pain for me because the truck only has 74K miles. I wish you were 2,000 miles closer, yes, I checked, so you can do mine. Good job. Good luck. Oz
Thank you, I very much appreciate that, just a quick little road trip and you’re here! 😉
I'd rather paint than wrap trims.
Just out of curiosity how would you fix the spots where the running boards mount to? On my ram 1500 the bolts looked like they were ripped off.. and I wanted to reinstall the steps but the mounting surface of the truck are shot. Rusted and the holes are ripped, with metal sticking out.
You would either have to replace the inner rocker, or you could probably drill and weld nuts to some 16 gauge plates, and weld to the inner rocker where the old mounts were
@ thank you sir.. I’ll definitely look into both options
Thank you for the primer explanation. That info in the first few minutes was exactly what I needed. I started noticing chips on my roof, and they started to grow and now have rust in them. So I’ve sanded those sections down to bare metal (and have found more rust underneath, so kept sanding more and more to bare metal). I now have sections of bare metal and sections of perfectly good paint. Based on what you’ve said, I think I’ll lay down epoxy primer on the bare metal sections (not sure how many coats), then high build primer on top of that, then sand that. For the good paint areas, I guess I just need to sand that and paint over, but I need to tape off and stop at a line somewhere.
Glad you found it helpful, 1-2 coats of epoxy, as long as it’s sealed up with good coverage 👍🏼
Great work.
Thank you 👊🏼
Where can you get the drain plugs for the back side of the rockers? My truck has 8 oval holes on each side.
Probably check with your local auto parts store and see if they have a catalog
How much for a full rocker job
Typically in my shop rockers and cab corners done and painted are around 4500-5000 range
Looking great how many hours did this take you
I usually bill 12-14 hours a side labor, and a few hours of paint time.
Like the door dolly.
Beautiful work! Thank you for taking the time to share your secret technique. I have the same truck with a crack that is opening up in the exact same spot you made your repair. I can probably handle the repair, but I am uncertain with my painting abilities. Where are you located? I would live to bring my truck to you for this repair.
Thank you, I’m in Quesnel BC
Really enjoy your content. Keep up the great work. Excellent work , John.
Thank you 👊🏼
does anyone know why i can easily scratch it off?

Happy Birthday. Great work.
Is there a trick to get the inner liner in and out without removing the bedside?
I’ve always managed to get them out by unbolting the braces, and the bolts up the front. It’s still very tight, but the bedside can be pulled out just enough
Bro I love this. Your daughter's 128 is the key to making my 330i as slick as it needed to be. I have black everything (except emblems) and the trim really needs to go. After that I'm installing smoke guards - thank you!
Just be sure you’re using a direct to metal product, or you will need to use an etching primer 👍🏼👍🏼
@@Johnnymidnight Oh I went and got that SEM! Not even playing around. Never doubt a Canadian ;) I got Gloss - because every part of my car is gloss (spoiler/grill upgrades)

Nice to see a different type of job brought in. Appreciate you taking the time to explain each process and why. As always a job well done and I'm sure a happy customer. For those that don't know where Midnight Paint and Body is: They are in Quesnel, British Columbia Cariboo Region.
Thank you for the kind words, I’m glad you liked the video.
The "Proper" way to paint it, is to take it off the car and paint it.
Not always, often the way these mouldings are attached with one way retainers, they’re considered non reusable, and can’t be removed without damage
Who carries wheel arch for 2004 tahoe/yukon
Don’t know for sure, I get everything through LKQ, usually easiest to check with your local auto parts store
No primer...ok. Weird...but ok.
It’s a direct to metal product. Primer is mainly for corrosion resistance, not adhesion. Stainless steel doesn’t corrode.
Color matched them too 🔥
All that plastic makes assembly easy and quick but repairs are nightmare.
Not much plastic other than the fender liner and some trim
@@Johnnymidnight I was refering to all the plastic components in the door. What a job to remove all of that. It used to be much easier to remove the interior door panel and then leave the window up and then be able to reach in and push out the door skin. I hate all this plastic. After a few years it gets brittle and breaks.
@@carldarlington7395ah, gotcha, yes, definitely not a fan of this style, you’re 100% correct, way too much opportunity for breakage with all of the brittle clips and tabs, and of course every manufacturer is different, so things often break trying to figure out how they come apart
Very nice job! Do you paint over the 2k primer surfacer or were you painting over a 2k sealer?
Over the urethane primer, I rarely prep for sealer, unless it’s new parts
Man it seems like Dodge trucks really rain supreme up there I mean they do down here too in Texas but many of the trucks on your channel are Dodge I love it I have a Dodge truck myself 2 of them
They’re definitely popular, but this really is truck country here, so it’s probably pretty even between the big 3
Did you put a fresh coat of paint on the wheels too?
Not yet, but I have the truck coming back in the spring for that, and a few other finishing touches
I ordered that plastic surgery product as per your recommendation. I also went to thier website and told them I ordered it because you recommended it.
Awesome, thanks!!!
Question for you, I see you use the torch for the film, can you use it on those stainless trim pieces and what about warping the metal ? I guess there is a fine line ? Does the torch work better than a heat gun ?
I find it faster than the heat gun, if you’re referring to the stick on stainless steel, it works for that as well, but there’s no reusing that stuff no matter how you remove it
@@Johnnymidnight ya, I don’t want to reuse, just wondering about taking it off, takes forever with heat gun
@@biggusdikkus1177gotcha, yes, I usually heat it with the torch and grab a corner with some vice grips to pull it off
@@Johnnymidnight thanks, love the vids

Great work! New subscriber. I've got some catching up to do on your videos.
Awesome, thank you!
Great job young man! I enjoy your videos. You have yourself a nice little shop. I own an Autobody shop in Massachusetts,. Not sure where you are located . But if my spraybooth was set up like yours OSHA would fine the living hell out of me and probably shut me down.
I get away with it because my shop is at home, in the country, and no employees 😉
Another great video John👌
John have you ever used scuffit ? Is that (fire red), panels on all this new stuff is so thin it doesn't take much to pull or push it out with your hand. Those pin welders work good and yes I have pulled holes in this new vehicle metal. Keep up the good work, all and yes short bed bedsides are more than standard bedside replacement panels.
I think they call it poppy red if I'm not mistaken, not familiar with scuffit ? Definitely can't be too aggressive with the stud welder, especially if it's HSS. The high carbon in high strength steel makes it pull holes and crack pretty easily.
That perfect reflection of your booth lights show how well the body work was done. Good work and also great video
Thank you!
Another great video. Its so satisfying to watch your work.. Thanks for taking the time to record and explaining it.
Thanks for checking out the video!
And always great great workmanship.... Love the vids. Sometimes a change in projects can be good...
Thank you, you bet, it is nice working on nice new stuff occasionally !
Is that the Pro lite gun,I used to have one, nice rig! Got stolen, the I bought an Optima by Motor Guard, Euro 900 for just clear,I absolutely love it better than,my Sata,my Iwata, but I hardly use them anymore.Thx again
Base gun is a pro lite, clear gun is a TT
The customer didn't want the 4x4 decal back on the truck bed?
No, I always ask, people rarely ever want them back on.
Yeah,Im not a fan! Solvent base, you can slow down, ,speed up,you have melv control, the water ehh! But its enviro friendly, until you blast one some coats of solvent based clear, haha! I love the DC series of clears, the 2000 cut buff in 40 minutes air dry,the 3000 little more flexible, the 4 is awsome overall, but man it is noxious!
One of the largest shops around here, they have like 7 locations, somehow puts out the worst paint work I have ever seen! I can tell every car they do,tiger stripes, panel paints they do it all, especially any silvers, just awful. They say their envirobase is a flawless system,I dont think so!
I've only had very limited experience with waterborne basecoat, but I know it has to be sprayed very differently than solvent !
I can even count how many times I have started blocking with 40 grit by hand only to think, jeepers I should get my air file out! No idea why! Thx for the video
nice work! great video also
Thank you, I appreciate it. I've been trying to get better at the editing part of it, but I don't always fare well with technology....
That was an awesome video. You are a great mechanic and should have classes on how to . Thank you
Thank you !
Another fine job! I might invest in one of those pullers.
I used them lots in my career, but never owned one until fairly recently, scored this one for a fair deal on marketplace
