A few years back i went to the Royal Festival Hall in London to hear this - but the publisher refused the rights. So at no notice he played Widor 5 from memory instead. As you do. So it's nice to hear it finally. Maybe Boosey and Hawkes should license it? Would make the perfect Sunday morning offertoire.
One of the most fantastique things in the world you can do with a single instrument, unbelievable mastery of an unbelievable instrument. It's extremely expressional an instrument and truly a lot like the orchestra, at times even more powerful and brutal (in a good way), at times the effect of the percussions cannot of course be replaced, though. Still this is far more convincing than anything I'd ever have been able to believe you could do with the organ. The ending must have been just surreal when listening live. I would reckon _Le Sacre du Printemps_ is a perfect work to bring out the colours and capasity of this instrument. I can't tell how much I respect and admire this instrument. What a shame if they didn't take a commercial / professional recording!(?) But thank you for this one!
"Le Sacre du Printemps" - here is the biggest theater scandal of 1913. After the performance, Saint-Saens asked what instrument had played the opening motif. When they told him it was a bassoon, he went out angrily and slammed the door. An exciting concert show in a church (the sacrifice of a virgin girl in the old pagan Russian empire), men it's very suggestive, a good transcription.
