I think you're right, and indeed by earing this performance it seems sparkles and flames are coming out from pipes (maybe it'd be better not, though... Ahah!). However I doubt that Guilmant would have played this fast.
I'm learning this piece just now, and the tempo indication is 126. I think it is too fast AND it'd sound a hellova mess down in the aisle to a listener. I'd think the microphones were placed closer to the pipes, several on several different levels probably.
For me, this tempo is perfect! The articulation is not lost, since clearly the microphones were placed in the body of the church and you can hear everything! In any case, I'm sure M. Latry is well able to judge the effect of the acoustics on his tempo! His virtuosity is amazing!

As for the sound recording, the microphones were well placed and mixed to achieve brilliant sonic clarity and dynamic range, and it still sounds great on TH-cam where quality suffers from compression. Bravo. Thank you for sharing.

Some people say this is too fast... It is not too fast, it is perfect! It was written all wrong, from the beginning. Mr.Latry simply corrected author's mistakes. Bravo! :) Every other organist on youtube got it all wrong...
Author's mistakes?? I wouldn't think so, Latry plays just a tiny bit faster (around quarter = 126) than the original asks for (quarter = 120). It's just that most other interpretations play much slower than the tempo Guilmant wrote.

Many years ago Latry gave a recital in St Patrick's Basilica in Melbourne. He made the Fincham organ into as good a facsimile of the ND organ as was possible. It was an outstanding occasion. His use of the horizontal reeds was musical and exuberant.

I am curious as to whether Guilmant's Final from his Sonate Nr. 1 with its similar style and key inspired Dupre to transcribe J.S. Bach's Sinfonia to Cantata No. 29 which became a popular staple in the organ repertoire.
YES ! I am agree, i think they are the best pipe organs in the world ! Pipe organs from France and From UK !!! I love Cavaille coll organs and Henry Willis and Harrison & Harrison organs, all together are quite similar for their great quality !

Maybe. But I'm forced to assume that it's the sound Guilmant was going for. He was titular organist at Sainte-Trinite, Paris when this was published (1875). Sainte-Trinite is also a very large room with a formidable CC (61 rank, I think) and a long reverb decay. He specified 120bpm as the tempo. Latry is playing right around 124-128bpm, so he's not too far off the mark. Might be a bit muddy from the nave, but you'd have to think Guilmant would have known that when he specifically called for 120bpm. Who knows?!? I know opinions vary widely when it comes to speed, but I actually like Latry's tempo here. To me, this is one of those pieces that evokes a sense of urgency, and this tempo really gets that across.
For my taste I believe (and I hate saying this because Latry can almost do no wrong) the addition of the enChamade reed to the entire ensemble so early before the ending lost the effect it can have when one hears it separately from the rest of the Organ. Just my opinion.

The good news that came today (4/16/19) is that the organ was NOT touched by fire or water during the conflagration. The organ is safe and unharmed.

It will be saved. The organ didn't burn at all. They are just lots of debris and dust everywhere and some waters. But it is still here.
