Hi Jan, Thank you for the nice comments and support for my choice of NAS. We spend a couple of weeks every year cycling in the Netherlands - great cycling, great country and great people. Peter
Hi Tom, I did my normal market research (mainly Google searches) and decided that they were a good company with some impressive products. When I narrowed my search to the NSA 325 it was clear that it was exactly the right NAS for me and I am delighted with its performance. Thanks. Peter
Hi Peter, It's a nice step-by-step review. All without hurrying (no need for catching a train). Well done! I believe it's a good product from Zyxel. Especially for use @ home. With a big advise to use Raid in mirror mode (since a decent backup is a must these days). Price vs quality is excellent in my opninion. Greetings from the Netherlands!
A good review Peter, thanks. Zyxel make good gear. I was a reseller and installer of their network products many years ago when they were a little known company. They always seem to represent good value and quality. Cheers Tom Stratton
Hi Tony, It is a great bit of kit and is really good value for money. My video camera can log directly into an FTP server and I have now tried that function of the NSA325 - it works brilliantly and I can now download video footage, as it shot, from the workshop. Enjoy your new gadget. Peter
Today I received ZyXEL NSA 325 v2 model purchased. In tests I've done, transfer rates are as follows. PC to NAS: 65-68 mb/s NAS to PC: 100-105 mb/s Test disk: Samsung pro 840 128 gb. Very nice results.
Jordan has reminded me that you do need to turn off your firewall during the installation process - it can be turned back on again afterwards. That would otherwise lead to an error of some sort. Peter
Thank you for this great review! I now have an old Synology DS109 and thinking of going to a 2 bay NAS due to the fact I can run RAID1. I was first thinking of a 2 bay Synology, but due to this and some other reviews I am not sure, why I would not go for the much much cheaper Zyxel NAS instead of a Synology! Greetings from the Netherlands!
Hi Tim, I did a number of Google searches for reviews of various NAS devices. I think that PC Advisor influenced me most although Amazon also provided some useful information. The Zysel is very competitively priced and has a whole bunch of features (that I am sure I will learnt to use one day!). I am not sure about the compatability with the Mac - as I do not have one and do not know much about them. Peter
I have gone to the ZyXel UK web site, found a support email address and asked them to look at this. I recommend that both you and Jordan do the same but use the ZyZel support email address for your region. If I get any information I will post it here. Good luck. Peter
What made you select the zyxel over one of the Synology units? I often read that Synology have the best software of any NAS. Also, do you happen to know is the Zytxel a wise choice for mac users? Thanks
Hi Sjoerd, The read/write speed depends on the installed HDs. I have not tried but see no reason why it should not support those services. The streaming that I have done works well. Perhaps others can contribute with their experiences. Peter
Great review! i do have some questions about the device: 1. what are the write/read speeds of this device? 2.does it support services as bittorent, couchpotato, sabnzbd 3. How is the 1080P streaming in a home network? Kind regards
Since the NAS is in your cupboard it doesn't seem to bother you too much. But what about the noise it makes? If I can I'll install it somewhere far away where I won't hear it but that might not always be possible? I've heard that NAS with small fans can get pretty loud, especially when under heavy load.
Peter Parfitt Thank i will get one next month as this month i just purchase windows 8.1 license :) . But i got some question Peter what maximum number of torrent allow to download at once
Those that ask if it can run game server. It sure does it's a mini computer. Some people install linux into it and run programs but it's all done through terminal from another computer. And it is very limited on specs to run game server but this NSA325 is very handy device and can support 4tb each. Mine still running.
Great video! Cheesy music, but great instructions. I got problems connecting usb devices to the NSA. Can you copy folders or data from the usb device manually by using your computer? How would you do that? (without using the "copy button on the NSA")
XBU Philippe I am sorry but I am unable to help with this one - perhaps you could send an email to Zyxel in your area. I have found them to be very good and usually reply very quickly. Peter
I only did it as an experiment. The TV is on the wired Ethernet. I think that I would have made a public directory and put some video there. The TV did the rest. Peter
great vid, thanks for doing it, I'm just about to set one up with a Sonos, have ripped 3000 Cds ready on a Transcend USB 3 HD, so we'll see how it goes, thankfully there's no Apple itunes rubbish involved, so it should be all good
Well that was easy, a NSA 325v2 arrived rather than the one I thought I ordered but that's all good, I just put one WD red 1 tb drive in to start, after a short brain freeze I worked out it was the NAS default password (admin 1234) not the windows computer one needed to get into setup , then it was done in a few min, and it is happily loading 20 thousand or so songs. It's VERY quiet you need to actually but your ear against it to hear anything at all, a highly recommended bit of gear, especially as it cost only £80.
Peter Parfitt Cheers, Peter here's a bit of an update now it's been running a while I have a Virgin Super hub that needs to be set up, I had to do a bit of Port Forwarding and set the pass through on the router Firewall page to allow it to be found on the Internet. Same in the NAS menu. The zCloud mobile phone app works great for music streaming, I woulndn't bother paying for Polkast or another app for just music streaming. As it has run in a bit you can hear the fan more, it's a bit looser now, and the lights on it are REALLY bright at night so don't put it in a bedroom if that sort of thing bothers you. So far I've had 1 HD video streaming and the Sonos music playing in the house on the LAN, and 3 separate music streams running on mobile devices over the web all at the same time flawlessly.
James Stowe Hi James, I would not describe the NSA as noisy at all. Mine is kept in a cupboard just above my desk and probably less than 18 inches from my ears. I cannot hear it running at all. This may be the sort of thing that will vary from one unit to another but mine is quiet. Peter
That has not happened to me. Take a look at the instructions under troubleshooting. If that fails then try the ZyXel tech support route. I am just a normal user (like you) not a technical wizard. Good luck. Peter

Hi Peter.
Thank you for the excellent review.
I have just purchased one of these & am waiting its arrival.
Looks like a very nice bit of kit.

Hi Nuttapat,
Yes it is very good and I am delighted with mine.

Thanks for the quick answer. I already emailed, but still waiting for a response.
Can you run game servers from this machine?
Thank you for the share video peter.
The average data transfer rate from the computer to the nas device, how many MB / s. ?
Hakan Karatay Hi Hakan, I have not measured mine but in a review by PC Advisor they tested it at 64MBps. Here is the link: @3336346 Peter
Very useful review, Peter. Thanks a lot!
I'd be interested to know what approach did you take to show your 325 content on your TV. Cheers
I only did it as an experiment. The TV is on the wired Ethernet. I think that I would have made a public directory and put some video there. The TV did the rest. Peter

i like this because he read everthing for me.
Price and feature. Big bang for you're buck. I believe this NSA325 would compete that cost 4 time more Synology. For 150 bucks I dig it. :D
How noisy is the NSA? Does than fan always spin?
James Stowe Hi James, I would not describe the NSA as noisy at all. Mine is kept in a cupboard just above my desk and probably less than 18 inches from my ears. I cannot hear it running at all. This may be the sort of thing that will vary from one unit to another but mine is quiet. Peter
New Brit Workshop Thanks Peter
Might get Synology DS214se or maybe the ZyXEL NSA 325.
That has not happened to me. Take a look at the instructions under troubleshooting. If that fails then try the ZyXel tech support route. I am just a normal user (like you) not a technical wizard. Good luck. Peter
Is there also a option to set the hard drives in raid 0 or 1?
xdboterham Yes, Raid 0 or Raid 1. Peter
Is it compatible with mac?
thanks for the review learn something new everyday cheers
Thanks for this great vid!
Tom Ragaert Many thanks Tom. I am very pleased with mine. Peter
Just ordered mine (thx to your vid) and will be in tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it!
I know nothing about game servers and so I cannot answer your question. It might be worth sending an email to ZyXEL. Peter
i ned help how to FTP server DynDns.org
Petrit Sadriu Lets hope that an expert reads this and can come to your aid. Peter
Okay, thanks anyway :)
You will never get more than a few MB transfer rates with any NAS. It sucks
And the unit is going to burn inside of a closet without proper ventilation 😫 😫 😫 😫
its not zo hendy it 512 mb ram
Snore, sat waiting to find out about FTP, then didnt.
