Hi- watched your video about initial setup if Synology drive. I have a Synology DS213+. My intention was to have two 3T drives, one mirroring the other. Is this how you set up the drives in the video? If not, how would I configure system to work as two 3T drives, one mirroring the other? Also- Dont understand Default Gateway as mentioned in Setup Assistant. do I have to create shared folder(s) and if so, for what?
Thanks Ranjit--Very nicely done video. Much appreciated. I've had the 412+ for several years, and wanted to start over from scratch. Appreciate your straightforward approach! (As you know the assistant and config files look different here in April 2017, but the video still demystifies the process)
The 411j is good enough if you want a NAS and RAID5 or SHR. But you will have this machine for a longer period of time, and bigger is better. DSM is fun to play with.
Ranjeet thanks for making such a informatics video just one question which hard drive brand would you recommend to get the maximum performance from this NAS unit?
Thanks for a good video! You don't mention anything about reaching the files via Finder on wireless locally, and I have a problem with this. Are there any settings in DSM I need to do? I have no firewalls and pretty much a standard home wireless network.
I'm sold, that's a great looking interface feature rich and with loads of available space. One question though, if I start with a raid 5 with (3 drives) can I easily add additional 2 later on?
That would be no problem, DSM (the operating system of the Synology) has very powerful back up features on board. I think a DS212 or DS411 would serve your needs. However, there are so many advantages of central storage. I.e. I have 4 computers in the house, 2 media players, and some other stuff in a Gbit LAN. It would be less convenient to put a big hard disk in every machine. On my DS1512+ I stored my music, movies, data, photos, home directories etc etc.
Hey Ranjit, firstly your videos are awesome, really helpful. I have a question though. Could I use two harddrives to back up using Time Machine with RAID, and use another two as just a standard external harddrive to put media on. Also is it possible to have Time Machine backup and just media on the same harddrive or is this not possible or not recommended. Thanks
thanks for making the video - just wanted to know can you put a mixture of drives in the NAS and will drives that are not on the compatibility chart from synology still work?? any suggestions would be great
Hi geekyranjit, Thanks for your video. but there is one thing i will like to know. must there be a dedicated PC for the NAS DS412+ all the time or this is only for installation purposes. If it is for installation purposes what happens if you need to configure it the next time. 2. I will also like to know if a separate web CMS like Joomla can be installed on it to host a website. thank you.
apparently if you use they hybrid raid 1, which is basically raid 5 from what i can tell. You can add in another drive no problem and it will dynamically adjust. I'm not sure about what the process is but one video I saw suggested you plug it in and wait for it to update the raid. I don't know for sure though, mine doesn't arrive until sometime today. BTW: Awesome review and how to videos in this channel. Synology should pay you because you convinced me to get one ;-)
Hi Ranjit, Cool Videos....keep them coming! Please suggest a budget NAS(~ Rs.8,000) for Home usage. Requirements: 1. Built in 1TB/ 2TB storage. 2. Capability to stream videos from NAS to Nexus 7, Ipad, Laptops on my network. Is "IOmega Home Media Cloud Edition 2 TB External Hard Disk" a Good Option
You showed skipping the "bad sector check" to enable a faster disk initialization... If one takes the same approach is there a way to check for bad sectors after the disks are live (initialized) and within a volume?
Great video. I have a question: Could I plug my laptop directly into USB 3.0 jack on this unit to access my files as well? I was hoping this would give me additional speed for editing video at home.
Have question about how nas functions. You have 3 discs with almost 3TB roughly 9TB. why after volume creation only 5.36TB left ? Its more than one HDD gone in volume... Also in what format HDD's are after volume creation: NTFS, FAT,EXT ??? Thanks for answers.
rezargamer Hmmm what ??? It's 3 discs each is 2.73GB,to be exact that is 8.19GB.... not 5.46GB. 8.19GB-5.46GB=2.73GB So where 2.73GB went missing after volume was created, exact size of one of the drives...???
Paul Lipton I would suggest put the lower capacity drives in the 1st and 2nd bay that way if future if you want to add extra capacity HDD it would be easier.
Hi Ranjit, I need your help, I am in the process of adding a new drive, I have showing 1volume but had 2 disks, ut for some reason the capacity is only showing for the one disk, what have I done wrong?
Hi Ranjit , i appreciate and thank you for the videos you are uploading about NAS, the thing is i am very much new to NAS and i want complete tutorial for installation and configuration of NAS with user creation and how i can use this NAS shared Folder when i am away from my Local Network please help me out for this, it will be great for me to learn such a awesome technology from an awesome trainer.. (Saif)
The industry really F'd over the home consumer with their crap products, their green drives were sold to people building RAID's when these drives are guaranteed to crash the array eventually. So after 5 years they came up with NAS rated green drives, only after countless Petabytes of lost data. NAS systems are also not "apple simple", nor anything simple to use like an External Hard drive system, everything is 4334634 clicks away an the human error potential is way too high.
NAS is exactly what i was searching for instead of complicated setup

How do I create two separate volumes one on each disc of Synology DSM 213 to have two independant file systems
How do I create two separate volumes one on each disk to have two independent file systems.
@geekyranjit from where can we purchase this? And how much does it costs?

Dear Ranjit, I am planning to buy synology DS418J. is this good option for SAN storage
do they make a similar one for 2.5" drives

No. The SHR will figure it out.
