  • Join us this week as we sail thru the towering peaks & deep waters of Desolation Sound!The Pacific Northwest's most iconic (and most popular) cruising destination 🏔 in the beautiful traditional territories of the Klahoose, Tla'amin and Homalco First Nations.
    ⛵We sail by ancient pictographs, swim in glacial waters and find solitude and solace.. minus the engine troubles.. in one of the most spectacular boating destinations on the BC coast!
    We're unsure if our engine will be able to get us out of here.. but luckily we never want to leave

    WHO WE ARE
    We are a couple from opposite sides of the world living an adventure-based, alternative lifestyle here in the Pacific Northwest.
    Our time is spent split between land & sea - living part time in our tiny home on wheels (a vintage Airstream that we converted completely ourselves) as well as living aboard our tiny home with sails (a Catalina 30 that we've been restoring while teaching ourselves how to sail)!
    OUR STORY
    • First Step Towards Mak...
    I (Allison) met James while working on a remote island in the PNW three years ago.

    A decade working in healthcare has helped us both to appreciate how finite our time is and created a sense of urgency to LIVE ALL OUT!

    We made some bold moves, hit pause on our conventional careers and took action turning our dreams into reality.

    The first step was downsizing & minimizing our lives to fit into 160 sq ft. - a vintage Airstream trailer which we converted completely ourselves, in just 60 days, without prior building experience!
    Watch the Full Build from Start to Finish here • Vintage Airstream to G...
    Watch the FULL Tour here • Minimalist Couple Livi...

    Living full time in our tiny home on wheels created the financial freedom we needed to take the next big step, purchasing a SAILBOAT!

    A longtime dream of ours and another HUGE project! We've been real busy refitting our Catalina 30 while teaching ourselves how to sail. It's been a pretty STEEP learning curve, but we're pretty motivated by all the incredible ocean adventures on the horizon.

    You are quite right, Allison; it is not that hard. Yes, there are difficulties, but taken one at a time they are not that hard. Yes you have take precautions before you set out, but those precautions stand you in good stead when difficulties arise. The reward is some of the most beautiful scenery that the world has to offer. In Australia we have lots of desert, which will kill you if the necessary precautions are not taken. Taken with precautions it can be quite beautiful.

      Overwhelming at first for sure, we’ll give ourselves a million reasons to ‘not do’ something. We rarely realize how capable we really are!
      Just a series of little steps. The reward is getting to experience the most beautiful places in the world in the most intimate way.
      Thanks so much for writing, we love hearing from folks on the other end. Cheers!

    What you have accomplished in a couple of years is amazing. Everyone has dreams but few chase after them especially if it’s way outside of the norm. You two are amazing. Look at what you have accomplished. Nature wants everything in balance and that’s true for life too. The more risks you take the bigger the reward. And all that beauty will come with some challenges. Loved this heartfelt episode.

    The mountain you feature in several shots, we know it has an official name, but when we were navigating to Prideaux Haven, as ignorant Americans, we called it "shark tooth mountain". :) And yes, we have had to use our dinghy to row our boat when the engine overheated. You're not alone, and your are doing fine. Just don't give up. we sail the same waters. Highly recommend Heriot Bay Inn on Quadra. Tell Tracy, Juanita and Deb that the crew of s/v Thalia say "hello"!
    What drone do you use? Ours cannot get the altitude that yours does.

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha it does have a Shark Tooth look to it.. I believe it’s called Mt Denman?
      Thanks for validating our row tow tow your boat experience! And thanks for the encouragement & the Quadra recommendation. Will be sure to check it out and say hello next time we are around! Currently up in the Broughtons, have you sailed that area as well?

    I have just noticed your boat’s name. Does ‘Nuintah’ have a particular meaning?

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We didn’t name the boat, but previous owners (whom we’ve never met) were from the US, somewhere in Utah, and our understanding is that ‘Uintah’ is an indigenous word. When we try to look up the meaning, what we find is Uintah valley, or mountain range or that Uinta is derived from the Ute word Yoov-we-teuh, which means pine tree or pine forest? All of that is to say we’re not entirely sure what it means exactly, but to someone or (some folks) it seems to represent a ‘connection to land’ which we can certainly appreciate :)
