  • On the west coast of British Columbia Canada, 220km northwest of Vancouver in the hereditary territory of the Homalco First Nation, lies Bute Inlet - a spectacular 80km glacier-carved fjord cutting thru the heart of British Columbia's Coastal Mountain Range. Wild, untamed, uninhabited. A dynamic landscape seemingly pulled from the imagination. Accessible only by boat or plane, few venture here due to the distance, remoteness, unpredictable weather, inaccurate charts and inhospitable anchorages.
    This is the first video of a three-part series documenting our adventure into it's remote reaches;
    a humbling & incredible experience we will never forget.

    WHO WE ARE
    Hi! We're Allison & James 👋 a Canadian Aussie duo who left the conventional life behind to live an adventure-based alternative lifestyle here in the Pacific Northwest! Currently, we split our time between land and sea - living part time in our tiny home in the woods and the rest of the year living on our floating tiny home, exploring the epic coastline of the PNW! Continually chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path & living a more sustainable, self-sufficient life.

    After watching you anchor, I remembered that we used to have an Allison (also my name) vs a Windlass. She quit in Forward Harbour and demanded a night at Blind Channel 😂 I have seen your boat in our travels, next time will say hello as we seem to share a backyard!

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha Allison vs windlass would be a very good skit! I almost quit after arriving in Forward Harbour after Blind! Hauled the anchor up from the deep depths twice that day and one was at 5am!
      Yes please do! Hope to share an Anchorage together soon, cheers!

    We anchored the same way you guys did in all the Inlets (south of Powell River) we explored in our Catalina 30. 1) always read up on it first 2) surveyed the anchor area using a Hummingbird 535 fish finder 3) always used a stern line 4) wrapped the stern line around a metal anchor ring when provided 5) wrapped the stern line around a smooth tree trunk (Arbutus tree) , we had a 600 foot stern line, an additional 400 foot stern line, had one Danforth anchor with 220 foot rope and 40 foot 5/16 chain, had a spare CQR anchor with 30 foot 5/16 chain and 200 feet rope. I cannot add anything to what you guys are doing, you got what it takes !!

      Awesome!!! Solid setup and process. Crazy to think we stern tied for the first time two years ago (Jedediah island). Learned so much since then (by doing)! Love hearing from folks who are getting out and trying these things!

  • @SeattleLifeguard
    @SeattleLifeguard ปีที่แล้ว +6

    If you're able to run the stern line up around a tree and then back to the boat, you only need to go up there once. You can just untie one end and pull it back while on the boat. ;) We made it only as far North as Pendrell Sound, so almost there, but not quite. Guess we'll have to head up there someday. We're sitting here at the dock in Hawaii, but I do miss the PNW and B.C. Beautiful video!!

      Hi Steve, yes that usually makes things easier! We didn't have enough line for that this time around! Desolation Sound is beautiful, I hope you enjoyed your time there!

      @Allison & James Again, great job with this video - I'm going to have to check out your other videos!! Yes, we're from Seattle. We bought our boat in Pender Harbor after the previous owners circumnavigated. We sailed down to Mexico and Central America, and then over to Hawaii. We're heading to French Polynesia next. We want to take the boat around the world for its second time.

    Nice. We purchased a sailboat last spring and finding the 29’ too small. What length is yours?

  • @jimbobobber
    @jimbobobber ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Question about anchoring in that first cove- I tried to anchor there and saw all the 'private bay' buoys and wasn't able to find a good protected spot. We ended up not being able to make it to the end because we couldn't get a good spot to start from. Where in that cove did you manage to find good holding, or was it really just that calm that you were comfortable with the less than ideal holding?

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah those moorings almost dissuaded us from anchoring there. We anchored pretty far into the cove to get into shallow enough water, pretty well dropped the hook as close to the dock in just under 30’ (at high tide) and pulled right back to the north side with a stern tie, the rock goes straight down so you can tuck in pretty close (there are some older ropes still slung around some of the bigger trees that have been used to tie off to before). Holding was decent, had 5:1 out but it was pretty settled while we were there. Sorry to hear that you didn’t make it up mate!

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah mail, always a challenge with a nomadic lifestyle! Sometimes family has been kind enough to let us ship to theirs. But up until now we’ve mostly had mail sent to the address of a parking pad we were renting - where our Airstream Tiny Home is parked.

    I cringe every time that I watch you weigh anchor as you pull the chain against the gunnel. I know that it's unavoidable, but couldn't a fitting be put in place to take the brunt of the wear and tear of the chain instead of the edge hull? Maybe there'e already something in place that I haven't noticed?

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha it’s cringey and def not ideal! We’ve had a refit plan in place since we acquired her, but there’s a handful of projects that have taken higher priority and never enough time! Hope to tackle this one soon
