With things like cucumbers, broccoli, carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, beans, peas, swiss chard, and more! In this episode I will be going through all the things we are planting in our garden for a fall harvest.

I planted Dinosaur Kale seeds (that I saved 7 years ago) when the temperature was 105 in zone 7. I didn't think I would get much since they were so old so I planted them thick in a planter. I think every one of them sprouted. I cut them to eat and they came up more. ';D

For those folks that have animals getting inside their fence, this helps us. We keep our garden up against the back porch area. We use construction fence from one end of back to the other. We have had every animal here ...deer, groundhog, rabbit, squirrel, fox, skunks and they don't bother it. We do have a lot of clover in the yard. We also have a motion light that comes on and shines up to the house so it shines on them. We have sheets hanging on the back porch so the wind does blow them. We have been so fortunate. Oh, and we keep marigolds and geraniums among plants too. Sometimes, we put onion and garlic peelings along the fence so they smell it. Also, we pray that God protects it from critters and He does. Trying to start some garlic, cabbage and chard next. With food being expensive, every little bit counts. Good luck to anyone trying to garden. Such a learning experience. We are constantly figuring out new ways to grow plants.

Urine - your own urine repells animals. Save it in wide-mouth GLASS jars. Store OUT of the sun. It will smell after a few days/week but all the better to deter animals. Pour it around ....
Also, urine is high in nitrogen - good for soil/plants. Didn't men urinate in Victory gardens, WWI, WWII, to enrich the soil? So urine has two purposes and it is free:
natural fertilizer. Off-Grid With Doug and Stacey has a video on this.....

Mustard is a great trap crop. Millennial Gardener has a video on trap crops and he recommends growing mustard along with brassicas so that the bugs go for the mustard instead. I did this and it totally works. Both my mustards look wrecked next to the kale. Kale has some holes but I found the worm and removed it. Otherwise the kale looks nearly perfect.
I recommend growing the mustard as a sacrificial plant.

    Thanks for the tips.

Kale stem pickles?? Tell me more!

    • @angusmcnaughton4570
      @angusmcnaughton4570 ปีที่แล้ว +2

They are fermented pickles . The same thing as making sauerkraut, water and salt. You can put a zip lock bag with some water in it on top as an airlock and screw the lid on loose.
You can put almost anything in there , garlic, peppers, dill , onions.
After 5 days to a couple weeks you just refrigerate to stop fermentation and they will store for months, and even a year.
I don't think there is anything with more probiotics and increased nutrition availability. Everyone that tries them loves them and I get requests to bring them to events like the 4th of July.
I cut the kohl rhabi with a French fry cutter for efficiency and those are awesome. Fermenting is a great Way to store your garden for winter, I dry a lot of kale and add it to everything, I can completely hide a huge amount of kale in spaghetti sauce that even haters cannot detect. 👍

I am loving all the garden channels encouraging us to keep gardening through fall. I really want to thank you for being one of the ones who has really gotten me back into gardening and learning to work with the little bit of ground I have, nourishing it, so it can help nourish our family. Since you live north of me a tick or two, your suggestions are a good gauge for me, even if I am a week slow on the uptake. haha I did get a Clyde's guide from you last year as well. :)
I have some volunteer peas growing up the chicken fence with my pole beans, and they look even better than my spring peas did. Part of why I grew peas there in the spring was to nourish the soil after growing tomatoes there last year though. The wax beans and green beans look great!
I am debating what I might plant right now. I still have lots of tomatoes and squash and melons and peppers and cabbages, and sugar beets and even rhubarb going, and carrots under a tomato climbing frame. I have mint and herbs growing in the landscaping, two young blueberry bushes and a new raspberry bush. I do need to tear out some invasive stuff on a shady side nook bed, where I am going to plant an elderberry bush I got from a friend and see if medicinal flowers will grow, so that's probably what I NEED to do this week.

I love watching these videos on fall garden they always get me pump for my garden! I live in the middle of Florida and I always start my garden this time a year seeing that my area summer so brutal im unable to start gardening pretty much most yankee plants until now. By the way my gardening season is pretty much from Sept-May then I do what I call a "soft close" which I plant a few thing I know will survive/thrive down here but moreover focus most of my time on soil development for my upcoming year

Just planted a bunch of these today! I'm in SE of the state, and I planted arugula, mixed lettuces, bok choy, bush beans, French breakfast radishes, and romaine today. Last week I planted beets, carrots, cherry belle radishes, swiss chard, kale, and spinach. Still have to plant mustard greens. Good to know I can still plant some of the others you mentioned.

I’m zone 8b. Haven’t had a single weed all year. Strangest thing. I live on a clay mountain, I built all raised beds using the sheet composting method, and everything is so lush, no light can get in! Maybe next year (my compost piles could use a few extra victims…)

Yeah, I sowed my slower maturing radishes on July 17 (Daikon and China Rose) and my fast maturing radishes on Aug 16 (French Breakfast and Helios). Started beets July 8, July 25 and August 7 so we'll see which of those successions do best.
I transplanted my romanesco, cabbage and broccoli Aug 21-24. Transplanted kohlrabi and cauliflower Aug 31-Sept 3. I'm worried that's too late for the brassicas and might just have to eat them for leaves instead of getting heads but we'll see.
Lettuce and spinach I also started indoors and will be transplanting this week, along with arugula, bok choy, more beets and more radishes.
      I'm in Southern Ontario.

Same here in Indiana! Rain or late frost causes replanting in spring. Next year I will be doing more indoor or greenhouse starts, if I get my little greenhouse built. I am going to grow tomatoes earlier, just so I can plant more things in the fall. haha

I noticed chicken wire type fencing around your bean patch. That is a great idea. My fall beans have been decimated by some hungry animal this year. They were on my deck in Michigan in a grow pot and Greenstalks container at around a 3 ft height. The plants above this level are still with us. This is my first year planting a fall harvest which is very exciting!!

Speaking of seeds. I found myself going to the Lowes and ended buying $80 worth of seeds before they might throw them out. I didn't go there to buy seeds. I just felt a desire to save them from the landfill. That was after buying a haul from Migardener. I look forward to a cooler fall, but I will not rule out higher than normal fall and winter temps as well.
