Amaranth, a gluten free grain as well as leaves like spinach, very heat tolerant, high in protein, iron, etc.

While both are legumes, they are completely separate species.
You're making me rethink growing a spring/summer garden at all. ;-) Everything you have listed as fall garden crops is what I have grown in the spring/summer garden (except tomatoes), and I have had no end of issues with temperature and pest load.
I am always sad when I scroll through your website and everything is sold out but it makes me happy that such a kind person is doing well!

Usually people stock up and buy their seeds in early winter then keep them for at least 2 years or so. You just gotta snag seeds when ya can.

This makes me think of the time I took a chance and planted bush Romas in September. Had to cover the rows once or twice, but harvested beautiful perfect organic beans, no bugs, no blemishes, on December 1, and my wife and I canned 20-some qts with plenty for fresh as well as pints of pickled dill beans. So guess I need to get the tiller out & try it again. Thanks for the nice video - quite inspirational as you can tell!

I'm in Georgia zone 8. I've made a shade garden bed to try spinach, peas, broccoli, radish and kale. I think more people in hot climates should think about shade gardens. Even created with shade cloth. You'll be surprised what will grow. 😊
My peas were planted in May and they are in the shade and doing great. I’m in Maryland and have been having triple digit weather! It’s the end of July now!
Yes indeed. I was growing cold crops in the high altitude of Colorado mid-July under shade screen so they would germinate. Kept them cool by misting them throughout the day. My September and October harvest of sweet peas, kale, chard, beets, carrots and half a dozen lettuce varieties were extraordinary!
I'm zone 8 as well and I have peas growing in summer on the shaded side of my house. It works out amazingly well for me. I get sweet snap peas even in the higher heat. Though I did have a small bunch die off when we received that crazy heat snap. Nothing really likes temps above 110 no matter how much shade it has
Dude. I'm in 8a in Texas. Put my citrus trees in the shade for about 1.5 months now. They're doing SO much better. I guess this Texas heat is rough even on citrus trees.
I'm in zone 6a but we go from cold spring to hot summer fast and in summer can go 2-3 weeks with no rain. I grow half my garden under the partial shade of a couple of crabapple trees. People think I'm crazy but I plant all my cooler season crops under the partial shade. They thrive on the morning and evening sun and get crucial shade during the hotest part of the day. Cucumbers especially seem to like this set up.
I feel like I am finally grasping the fact that my fave veg is sown now. Had so many issues sowing seeds at the beginning of the year to find they all failed. So this year I am stepping up[ my game. Now I feel a little more confident to go ahead and follow your advice.
I wish you had a twin, the FLgardener, who knew the same facts about planting in august when temps still hit 100+ degrees any given day. I'll delay this by a month, and hope all this will be good to grow then :)

Random trick to keeping many ground pests away from plants is wood ash from a fireplace, gently placing the collected and cold ash around the plant, and anyone who knows how nutrient rich soil can get after a fire will know that ash can help with soil nutrients as well. Out in Oregon where slugs and worms and caterpillars are abundant, we used this. But obviously don't use ash from plastics or garbage burn material as it has carcinogenic chemicals in it.
As a forager, Im just happy to see purslane and amaranth considered as crops not weeds. 😁
I was always taught that, in some cases, a weed can merely be a plant that grows where you don't want it to.
Recently, our family restored and renovated Ma's veggie garden. It's been 6 years since she died and since I've been able to garden. I'm trying to squeeze all I can into this tiny garden in Milwaukee. I have followed you for many years. Thanks very much for sharing!

I bought my tomatoes at a nursery ( Armstrongs nursery). Put a banana peel in hole before you plant anything ! I even purée my peels and old bananas in my blender and pour it around the base of my plant 👍👍👍👍👍👍. Look into (tea composting)👍👍👍. Mulch around ALL plants I use straw about 4-6inches make sure if you get any hay or straw that it doesn’t have any chemicals used while they were growing the hay or straw. Some places use it around the head for weeds. Keep away from that kind. Look at a lot of gardening on TH-cam.

I've recently sown out peas, bush beans, spinach, lamb's lettuce, winter purslane, chard, beets, lettuces, dill, parsley and carrots. I had no idea I could still plant pole beans, kohlrabi and cabbages! I still have seed packets left, so tomorrow I'm totally giving this a try. Thanks, Luke! :)

I am from MI and am now planting in CNY. Yes. Similar climate. I started my first ever garden there late, so I'm glad to see my Detroit Red beets (and a couple other veggies) are on his list! I'm seeing on the Google map that Port Huron is at about the same longitude as Niagara Falls.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm going to use your ideas in my garden. I also plant cover crops peas/oats, beans/oats in late july/August and rye in September.

"Bunching onions" I think must be what are sold in our supermarkets as "spring onions" - nice to know you can grow them still in late summer/autumn!! ☺️)

So in 2020, I planted 2017 season peas and every one of them came up. I had newer seed, but found an old packet unopened and decided to see what would happen. I am impressed.
I never throw old seeds away. Many people collect seeds.

I keep my seeds in a brown bag, they haven't let me down and some are 5 years old

This was very helpful, thank you! Zone 4 Canada here. If I recall you're zone 6? My frost comes 2-3 weeks before yours. I'll be harvesting my garlic next week. I have 9 rows of 12-15 planted, so it's a good sized patch! I usually don't replant the whole bed but this year I will. Food is more expensive now, I'm sure you've noticed! I'll add some sheep manure compost after I pull the garlic, water it in and let it brew for a week. Fortunately, I gather seeds/beans every fall so I still have 'leftover' seeds for kale, zucchini, bunching onions, daikon radish, 2 types of bush beans, 2 types of pole beans plus half a package of swiss chard seed and half a package of carrot seed.....they're ALL going in!!!! I'll give the non-root crops a headstart under the growlight. These are strange times. Take care.
Yes, Canada. I just mentally substituted his mentions of August for July. Our first frosts start in September. It our September frosts that sweeten up our kale and parsnips. I just put in beets, kale and watermelon radishes. I think I might clear some room this weekend and add more sugar snap peas. I wonder if I have some amaranth seed? But where would I put it? I had purslane volunteer all over the place this year. I'm saving seed from it and I may companion plant it with my tender perennials that spend the winter on my windowsill.
We don't get first frost until mid October in my parts I'm 5A in Peterborough.

God directed me to this video. Last night, I told my cousin, back in MI, (she did not get a spring garden in) that there are several plants, she could still get planted for this year. Fifty years a gardener and I am still learning! Great video. I don’t always get it together, but I do have chard and brassica babies ready for planting. Some of this I knew, but some of this is new to me. Starting some zucchini and peas right now! Thank you.
My grandpa had a beautiful home garden and he grew up on a farm. Purslaine was the only "weed" he didn't mind and would snack on it while we were weeding in his garden.
The spinach and lettuce would be awesome in a wheelbarrow, nice and easy to move around.

#21 Arugula, it does so well in the fall and the leaves don't get eaten by bugs.

I planted some that I got at the Farmers Market 6 weeks ago and bugs ate it all up I even sprinkled diatomaceous earth on it it's still got eaten by bugs

I left for a long weekend vacation, came home and I had 4 foot weed stalks! Plants LOVE IT! So do weeds! But why wouldnt they? Great stuff!

I've been watching you for a very long time but never thought about getting seeds from you because I have an abundance from places like Walmart and the dollar store. They seem to do just fine for me but I am obsessed with your garden and the PASSION that you have for it. Alot of people look at me, like coworkers and family members and think I'm crazy because I came from a wild upbringing and I find gardening to be my yoga. Lol. I just wrote down your 20 things so I can start getting them ready possibly indoors in my greenhouse I have in my bay window with supplemental lighting. You're probably not gonna read this because I know this video is old but I just wanted to say within the next couple days I'm gonna be purchasing probably 15 at of the twenty from the list from you. And I also wanted to say thank you for helping me understand better on what to do in make my garden EXACTLY what I wanted it to be. Let's see if your seeds help make it better. Lol. Now that I have buttered you up, I have a request: Could you do a video that tries to sum up the major difference between gardening in MI vs CA? I live in the San Francisco Bay area and I know I should be able to grow most of the same crops that you are growing, and I have in fact, but planting dates, best varieties to grow, how drip watering affects the crops vs overhead watering and how big one can expect a plant to get are all things I have been wondering about.

How did your fall garden turn out?
You have an amazing garden! There are seeds I haven't even heard of and I would love it if you would come to my house and teach me how to do it in my back yard. I'm going to go try and plant a few of those now.
🏡 Keep trying, and that is how you find out what works in the area where you reside. I would say never use the whole seed package at once, plant some more 2 or 3 weeks later, in case something does not go as hoped for.
🏡 Then also learn how to save your own seeds from at least 2 plants of every kind. Most properly dried and properly stored seeds last years. Yes years.
🏡 Keep in labeled sturdy ziploc freezer bags, and store in a humidity proof, bug proof, rodent proof, hard container. Place in a cool or cold, dry, dark location.
🏞 Happy gardening to all, everyone and everywhere.
For NC & SC, we'd have to push that timeline back about a month. It's still 97 degrees on 9 Aug. Too hot for some of those crops.
SC here. Its been so hot this summer.
This is true for Kansas too. We will be mid 90s all thru next week! But you can start a lot of the brassicas inside and transplant in 4-6 weeks. That is what I am trying this year. And I will be trying to grow lots and lots of carrots because I love fermented carrot sticks.
Not only that, but if you plant something like Cucumbers or Zucchinis right now in NC or lower, you'll be in for quite a fight with pickleworms unless you use row covers, which are just incredibly annoying to manage as you have to either raise and lower them everyday to let in pollinators, or you have to hand pollinate. Whatever advice you see here, make sure you consider that he's giving it for Michigan as every area has it's own taxonomy of pests and diseases in addition to the climate differences.

And if you live in zone 9 just wait another month before planting these crops. 100+ degrees Fahrenheit weather will kill most of these plants at their young age.

Yeah I'm in Texas.. it's going to be over a hundred degrees for the next 3 days so I'm going to wait until next week I guess. Maybe even the week after LOL.

9? In zone 3/4 its way too late in August for starting anything that can't hack a hard frost... Because our average first hard frost is mid-september.

I like your spacing. The plants are really tall and healthy. They don't need extra horizontal space at the base. I bet those roots go down really deep under the raised beds!
It's beginning to cool down. Yesterday it was 99 this up coming week tops out at 80 . Right now it's 68 😍

We had so much rain in April through May that my spring crops of onions and beets didn't grow well at all in the no dig garden beds I made due to too much water. It usually is hot and dry here in DFW, TX during May. Discouraged and disappointed, but your videos inspire me to keep trying! thank you! :)

Question - I know you don't have experience with California, but do you think that if in San Diego with fairly constant temperatures, one should be able to plant summer crops year round? 70 degrees year-round with 50 lows at night
You usually can, just make sure during the wet part of the season to watch out for disease/fungus brought about by constantly humid/wet leaves or soil. But as long as temperatures stay warm, yes! You can
