Cockatoo Shopatoo - One of the smoothest check-outs ever, and Benji sees his picture on the wall!

- Thank you for watching Benjamin the Best Bird! Benji is an extraordinary bird who sadly must rely on humans for his entire existence. That is not how a bird should live. Birds should be flying in the skies and living in the trees. But not all are lucky enough to be living that life. Instead they are living lives into which people have forced them. Before finding us, Benji was in a stressful environment, and he plucked his feathers in response, so often that many of the follicles died. He has only half the usual number of feathers, and will never fly. He will need someone to watch over him for the rest of his life. There are far more failures in cockatoo ownership than there are successes, and the ones paying the price are the birds - who are also the only ones not at fault in this situation.
If you are watching bird videos and thinking, "Wow, I want one!" please understand that you are only seeing a few minutes in a day with a cockatoo... I'd like to share some reality:
Cockatoos destroy anything and everything they can. Their destruction is so intense that they are officially declared "pests" in their native countries, where they destroy trees, crops, homes, outdoor furniture, and have even been known to damage cars.
Their scream is loud, and can be anger-provoking, like being punched in the face with sound. The noise is unlike anything I have ever experienced before, and if I didn't live with Benji, I would say that I didn't care to ever hear it again. Seriously folks, it's horrible. But it's their sound. It's what nature gave them to be able to communicate with each other while living in treetops - not in people's homes. It is a sound meant to travel miles, and it does. Hearing damage takes place at 120db. The decibel level of a cockatoo scream is 120-135db.
If you have (or anyone in your household has) a temper of any kind at all, this bird is not for you. It will destroy things dear to you, inciting anger. It will scream, which will ignite your temper (a great illustration in film, just replace the boy with a cockatoo: • Everytime the Boy Scre... ). The more you yell at the bird, the more, and louder, it will scream. You will blame the bird, but it's really you at fault. The bird is screaming for a reason, and it's up to its caretakers to solve the problem. Sadly, while anger is not the most useful response, it is the most human.
They require a large enclosure, and many hours outside of it. If you leave a bird in a cage too long, it will scream, pluck its feathers, and in extreme circumstances, it will chew holes into its skin. Sitting in a cage is against their nature, & extremely difficult for them - can you imagine anything more diametrically opposed to soaring in the sky? When out of their cage, they require close supervision due to the carnage that would be left in their wake if freely wandering. They also emit a dander that can cause lung issues in people and pets.
They are very emotional creatures who mate for life, which in their case, is +60 years. Their need for bonding, for having a being in their life that is "theirs," is very strong. They will depend on you everyday, in sickness and in health, til death do you part. Frequent re-homing is very hard on them, and can cause deep depression and self-mutilation. Lastly, understand you will be bitten at some point. It's simply communication for them, but it sucks (and hurts!).
There are thousands of these birds in rescues and sanctuaries all over the world, who were violently trapped, netted, grabbed... kidnapped from their homes, and forced to live with humans who later discarded them. There are more who were bred by people who think it's okay to do that. But it's not. Selling these birds to live in people's homes is like selling fish to live in sand.People acquire them because they are indeed adorable, but it is quickly learned that living with them is dramatically life altering and fraught with negatives, and the bird is then abandoned. It is believed that more than 600,000 birds are given to rescues EACH YEAR (or attempted to be given, but turned away due to high occupancy). It is estimated that 75% of birds live a life of abuse or neglect. Let that sink in for a moment… 75% of birds in human care are beyond miserable.
We need to provide homes to the birds who are trapped in this life with humans because they have no alternative. Let's allow the rest to live in the wild where they're supposed to be. If you wish to jump into bird ownership, please educate and prepare yourself, and then go to a rescue and save a lonely bird who needs love and care, or buy from an owner who cannot, for whatever reason, care for the bird any longer. We must get breeders to stop breeding and selling them. These birds are not meant to live with humans, and when they do, it takes very dedicated, patient people willing to do the work for decades. If you think you are up for it, please adopt a rescue bird. You can change its life.
Benjamin looks so happy and healthy. I love seeing him thrive, he is so special. He exudes personality. 😊 ❤❤❤
@yvette968. 😀❤️❤️😀
I'm sorry, but he does NOT look like a healthy and happy bird. That's not to say he doesn't love his family, I'm sure he does, but right away I could tell he's not on a good and healthy food diet. It's never good to hide the truth. Please support a better diet for this bird, he deserves good healthy mixed diet. Seeds are for special treats, and only small amounts - way too high in fats with ZERO nutrition. I love parrots (all birds, actually) ❤❤❤❤😘😘😘
@@jojodress Benjamin gets fed well and is a very happy boy. You don’t know what you’re talking about. He was abused by his former owner that’s why his feathers aren’t full. He pulled them out and they won’t grow back. He’s loved and cared for.
@@jojodressyou are wrong, Benjamin's mom provides a healthy enriched vegetable diet for Benjamin, the reason his feathers are plucked is because of his former owner, you know your ignorance is ridiculous, you should really watch how you talk without knowing what you're talking about, Benjamin's mom save this bird's life let alone gave him the best life ever.
@@jojodress I respect that you preach good diet for birds - that's awesome. But you are jumping to conclusions here. I include text with all of Benji's videos to explain his feather situation. And I assume you are referring to the bag, or bags, of seeds I have in his play space. The bags are for the wild birds, not for Benji, though he does get a few now and again. Their feeders are right outside Benji's exterior doors, so I keep the bags in his space.
Benji is on a very good diet, and his appearance has improved greatly since we've gotten him. He is ridiculously fussy about his pellets, and is terrible about eating almost any vegetables, as well as quite a few fruits, so I sneak them into smoothies I make for him each morning. He drinks about 1/8-1/4 cup every day. The smoothies include spinach, kale, zucchini, yellow squash, blueberries, strawberries, carrot, apple, hemp hearts, flax seed, almonds, an orange, and sometimes a banana. It required 6 months of extreme effort and overwhelming stress to get him off the seeds-only diet he was on when he came to me. I'm not about to let him go back to those days. 🙂
Congrats Benji for being on the wall!!!What an honor!!! ❤Benji looks like he's having a blast with momma and uncle Shaun!!! ❤ ❤ ❤ Hello Benji, momma, and uncle Shaun. Hope you all have a great rest of the week!!!

Thank you for that description and enlightening us. When one sees Benji and how adorable he is, one can’t help wanting such a magnificent companion but I was not aware of the commitment it takes to keep one out of their natural habitat. I’m so happy that Benji is with you💖
@IrisLaBlanca ❤️❤️❤️
A lot of people do not realize these parrots are lifetime companions that require more time and attention than you can imagine. If you cannot do this, for your sake as well as the bird’s buy a goldfish and take care of that instead.
Benjamin is a smooth shopper..I just can't handle how cute he is..I'd love to hug him😅❤

More shopping fun. Benjamin, you were so cute at the checkout. Sneaking off the cart and inching down the counter then right back on the cart. The wild birds are going to be very happy with your seed purchase. That's a lot of seed!!! ❤✌😊
So Uncle Shawn is a driving instructor. I was a DSIT (defensive driving instructor trainer) for 17 years on Saturdays and for the state offices here. That translates to me teaching defensive driving to the public and also licensed to train others to be defensive driving instructors. I truly enjoyed it, then it all went to video and then online. Fun while it lasted. I used to start every class with, "I know none of you want to be here but how do you think I feel? I have to be here all day too and I didn't get a ticket!" It got a laugh, and the rest of the day always went smoothly.
🚙💨💨💨
@ms.cellaneous7458 😂😂. Love that line to start each class 😂😂. Yes, Shawn's been an instructor for a few years now, and he LOVES it. It's a combination of classroom lectures, and one on one driving with the students. He's never enjoyed a job more. 🙂 He too uses a lot of humor in the training. (I think it would be impossible for him not to do so - humor is a huge part of his personality 😂)

I was at Harris Teeter recently and a lady had a Cockatoo. The bird’s name was Crystal. She liked me and kept wanting to stand on my arm. I hope I see her again. PS the owners name was Elizabeth. I hope to see her again also.
@SharonElizabethWhitfield How wonderful! And it's nice that the owner's name is shared by you - it will be easier to remember. 🙂 I hope you run into them again! 😀❤️
And all time she is talking about something,but I don't understand...❤❤❤❤
@Kristina-yv9xj. No one really does... 😂❤️. Sometimes he uses words, but mostly he just uses his own cockatoo language. 🙂
Wow-does he ever try to fly off?❤
@bluecat798 Sadly Benji doesn't have sufficient feathers for flight. He is a former plucker, and came to us with half the normal number of feathers. So no, he's never flown off. He can glide though! 😀
@@benjaminthebestbirdhe looks so full feathered. He looks happy and in good shape

@@RebeccaStout Yea! 😀

He’s adorable, but how do you prevent him from getting startled and flying away? I would be so worried about that outside.
@tinatolbert988. I didn't start taking him out in public until he and I had spent years just walking around our yard, and I felt comfortable that his confidence was high. I made sure he was used to sounds and movements we might encounter. He handles pretty much everything really well - the only exception... butterflies. They startle him every time! But he doesn't fly off. He just dodges them while holding on to my shoulder a bit tighter. That said, it's always a concern, but shopping is such a great social event for him.
Damn Benji looked so agressive in this video that the 2 guys behind you just changed to another checkout xD..... zzzzzzz
@Unleashed1. I noticed that too. 😂
Maybe Benji is commenting on the impulse items.

So funny how happy Benji is shopping with you both. He is in his zone. (P.s. what were the poorman's Reese's?). I didn't quite catch it at beginning of vid.😊
@lb1460. Mallo Cups! 😀❤️. Yes, weirdly, Benji seems totally in his element while shopping. 😂
@@benjaminthebestbird Looks like we don't have those out here (Mallo cups). P.S. On a prior post of yours about your horses...I would've done the same similar thing w the windows and not seeing a view out. I hope you may one day adopt/rescue another horse (or two🙂). You're such an awesome pet parent and so many animals of every kind need someone like you.🙏
😂😂😂😂😂everybody want to meet her😂😂😂
First off, let me congratulate you on your description of what it's like to live with a cockatoo (or parrot). I have been owned by a Mollucan Cockatoo for the past 17 or so years, and I have a little question for you: What do you do about Benji's poops when he's in public? I often just carry an old newspaper with me, and Zoe usually let's me know when she's about to poop. I've thought about a "Flight Suit", but don't know anyone who has had one, and Zoe is SO fast in getting out of a harness, that I'm hesitant to invest money in one. So what's your approach when in public?
@sueweatherby3729. I keep a package of wet wipes in my purse or pocket. And, I only shop where there is no carpeting. 😂. That leaves us with the thrift store, and the farm store. Luckily, he loves them both!
How fantastic that you've been with your bird for 17 years. That's wonderful. ❤️ I imagine carrying around newspaper would be cumbersome, but effective. I've seen mentions of these flight suits, but I can't even get a harness or hoodie on Benji, let alone a diaper-like garment. 😳
@@benjaminthebestbirdthanks for the info. I was curious and wondered if they can be somewhat potty trained.
Can I go shopping with a parrot in a foreign country?
In Japan, you can only shop with dogs, so it looks like a rare sight.
@user-nd7oz4zn7r. Here in the US, animals are not allowed in most stores. But there are a few who allow it. 🙂
