I have a galah thats in his 90s. He is fully naked. Sometimes they lose a few feathers and sometimes they lose all at that age. . Hes still a cutie though!! In the winter ive knitted him little vests to wear :)
Ghost Spore absolutely not. They are part of the cockatoo species and they live just as long. He was my grandmothers bird and was already 30 by the time she got him. Now that shes passed he is mine. He is much older now and still doing great!
Most Macaws do live for quite some time...and many Macaws have been known to live 70-85+ years... Cockatoos in captivity and in general live to around 40-60 years, which is one thing that makes this one so unique... Some smaller birds of the parrot order live around 30-40 years, and others.. such as the blessed Cockatiel, usually live up to around 15-20 years. Cockatiels are relatives of the Cockatoo. Both species are in the Cacatuidae family, so I assume that there are behavior traits that may be similar in both. Cockatoos remind me of toddlers (in the general sense), when I watch them play on TH-cam. Emotionally and intellectually, Cockatiels are a lot like human babies (and I mean literally), but then some of their behaviors and emotional responses can seem like that of a human who's a little older. (Birds are individualistic, as well as very social...so, they each have a their own will of preference, as well as abilities....such as a degree of self awareness.) Unlike us humans however, Cockatoos and Cockatiels don't "grow up" like we do...They age in different, but similar ways physically... Emotionally is another story. My little babies are going to stay terrifyingly rambunctious and painfully cute, till they transcend to the afterlife....lol...😆😆.
Birds do age, but you don’t see it physically that I am aware of. I have a cockatiel and he is 13 years old in bird years, making him about 55 years old in human years. He was recently diagnosed with slight arthritis.

That's a myth, cockatoos are extremely unlikely to live more than 70 years or so. The average is 40 or 45. The one in this video is most likely not 89 years old, and there are no confirmed cases of them living to 100.
Just another example of how birds being taught tricks is not cruel...they thrive on it! The key is to make sure they always have a variety of activities to play with and plenty of human contact. We are their flock, and ignoring them is the cruelest punishment for them. Love your babies, keep their brains engaged and active, and they will have a good and happy life.
My bird is 18, and believe me, that's a long time to have a pet this demanding.I love her, and take her with me all the time, but I have to admit, if I had it to do again, I'm not sure I would. They don't make good pets for everyone, in fact, I'd say if you have small children, or work long hours, forget about a bird!

My friend was trying too sell her. after about three months I told her if I had the money I would take her. She said you can have her. I always wanted one and am thrilled too have her. She is a sweet heart. She knew me before she was given too me. I am retired and have all the time in the world to spend with her. This is why you have to research what bird you get. You want a ten to twenty year commitment? Budgies. Twenty to thirty? Cockatiels (although they can get older than that with good care). Thirty to fifty? African Grey (cute bois). Always remember, it's not a pet, it's a life in your hands.

Actually I knew a young man in his 20's that got a parrot. The first thing he did was head on down to his lawyer to have a codicil having the bird and care of him placed in his will so he would be safe. I remember being surprised. Then he told me how long lived they are and that barring some illness or accident there was no doubt that even tho he was in excellent health the chances were good that the little guy would out live him by many years. You got a parrot you better get that will looked at.
Then he married and had children. Gave the bird to a rescue because the noise kept the little darlings from napping. Amazing how a person's life changes and a parrot no longer "fits"

Just look at the color of the eyes. Cockatoos are easy to look at and tell sex. From here the eyes look dark brown which would be a male. Light brown or even with a reddish cast would be the female.

Captive animals with this kind of enrichment are shown to exhibit fewer stereotyped behaviors, no self-mutilation, and less abnormal aggression than animals that are left completely free of human contact. It should be noted that I am NOT referring to circuses or similar cases; those force the animal to perform. The trick-training done by parrot owners and zoos uses positive reinforcement only; if the animal decides they don't want to do that trick, they're allowed to just walk away or the trainer asks them to do something else.
My husband and I had a Cockatoo back in the 80's and he was a sweetheart but he was an escape artist too. When he would get out while we were at work he chewed up the entire back out of our new sofa one time and another time he chewed the corners of off my husband's wooden Bose speakers. Cackatoos just need a LOT of attention. We had to find him a new home, but I wish I had him back now that I'm retired. I still miss him. 😥
The tragic thing about these lovely birds is they will always outlive their owners. Please have a plan in place for someone loving to take care of your bird when you pass on.
Umbrella cockatoos are native to Indonesia. There are other cockatoo species endemic to Australia (sulfur crested, rose breasted, and more), but not umbrellas!
Actually due to the explosion in bird trade they made it to Australia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Also, there is a wild population of these that have been in South Florida since the 90s due to escapees and naive releases.
Today he would be 95 years old, I hope he’s still alive and doing well !!! I wonder who had him for the first forty years or so of his life, he’s a beauty and would love to have him !!!!!

Leopard Style - That is ridiculous. A 9 or 10 year old child can NOT take properly care of a cockatoo! It is challenging and difficult for adults, many end up having to be rescued because adults can’t deal with them... Adults have to get them (adopt), and make plans for their care when they can’t care for them anymore, so they don’t end out in a shelter.
I remember going to the Weeki Wachee in Florida during a family vacation in the 70s and seeing the bird show and the water ballet. Its funny that im now 58 and discover one of the birds that performed. I have 7 species of birds in my home now,most are rescues. . Im sure the bird show had some influence in my love for birds. 😀
Incredible!!! My bird is 33. She is amazing and willed to my daughter our vet said she’ll live to 80 to 120 yrs old. We got her when she was 2 days prior to two months old a hand fed very smart talkative middle aged bird. She is 100% a part of our family. She calls me mom. She’s smart and a Yellow Head Amazon. Very smart and I could not imagine my life without her. I made her a companion pet so she is licensed and will always be permitted to live with me and my daughter. I own a home so no one can tell me otherwise but prior to that I had landlords that tried to not permit her only in the past 5 yrs. Prior to that most landlords felt a bird wasn’t a pet because they have their own homes. But if you allow them they could destroy moldings and such. My bird Billie has been trained to not do those things. I really am great full to a person that has taken in and bonded with a bird that has likely seen many owners in its life. You are a blessing to all birds. I thank you.
Welcome To Trench Hi... Respectfully speaking, it generally does work that way with cockatoos. If they eyes are dark (almost black) they’re male, if a visible shade of brown then female. My cockatoo was too young to sex when I got her and when I noticed her eyes looked brown when the sunlight hit them, I said oh boy, I bet she’s a girl (which was good because I’d been calling her Cleo). Then when she was old enough to be blood tested, during one of her physical check ups, it indeed turned out she’s female. Anyway, maybe it’s not 100% accurate, but it is generally a good indication of sex. HOWEVER, in the case of Duster, I personally do not believe that the sex can be determined by this video as I feel we’d need to see him up close and personal and have some sunlight shining on him so we can closely examine his/her eyes. 😉 Anyway, hoping you have a blessed and happy new year! ✨

+Nova Smith I'd say a he, most cockatoos that I know of have the distinctive physical trait of having differing eye colours between genders. Or in other words males have black eyes females have brown
+Irish Eyes That isn't a reliable means of sexing an umbrella cockatoo. Only way to confirm is through a DNA test. There are enough females with dark eyes and makes with light brown eyes that you can't be completely certain without help from the vet.

And yes, they should be subjected multiple times to the ritual of “calling the flock” before bedtime. 😉 Oh, and mating, too. My sweet birdie is very VERY vocal when she’s forming an egg. To be fair to the bird, it is a life-long commitment and often limits where you can live. These are NOT apartment, condo or townhouse birds. I’ve heard my birdie yelling from a block away. 😂
I have to completely hand raised parakeets They love to chew on my door frames it’s annoying but I wouldn’t give them away for the world they mean everything to me If you’re going to adopt a bird of any kind They require a lot of time, patients, maintenance, care and attention

I've rescued a U-2 its been 1 yr now he's an older bird but I don't know his age, ( I've asked him but he refuses to tell me ) his name is Mad Max he was abused by his previous owner an is nervous and scared and will bite aggressively , he's gotten better but has a long way to go, it will take time & love but he's got a forever home now and someday maybe he will get better , it's our journey together .

Some people go by eye color to determine a parrot's gender, but that's not always accurate. For 17 years, Einstein the Talking Texan Parrot's owners thought he was female. Only when they had him DNA tested did they discover that he was male. (In some of their older videos, they tell him he's a "good girl".) Perhaps that was the case with this bird - that it was thought to be male but was actually female. Just speculating. :)
My little male, bought as a fledgling, lived almost 23 years (1980-2003)! He was a delight! I now have an African Grey who will outlive me. I still miss the cockatiel! They have such personality!

as far as i know Parrots and tortoises are the only two pets that have a good margin to outlive thier owners.

89 years old in 2014 and somebody said 3 years ago that this cockatoo died.
Actually I knew a young man in his 20's that got a parrot. The first thing he did was head on down to his lawyer to have a codicil having the bird and care of him placed in his will so he would be safe. I remember being surprised. Then he told me how long lived they are and that barring some illness or accident there was no doubt that even tho he was in excellent health the chances were good that the little guy would out live him by many years. You got a parrot you better get that will looked at.

Just look at the color of the eyes. Cockatoos are easy to look at and tell sex. From here the eyes look dark brown which would be a male. Light brown or even with a reddish cast would be the female.

when i was 12 i went over a friend's house and when i saw his parrot i said "oh my god, what happened to that bird?" my friend replied "he's 80, that's what happened" LOL. duster, on the other hand, looks not a day over 40. amazing

My husband and I had a Cockatoo back in the 80's and he was a sweetheart but he was an escape artist too. When he would get out while we were at work he chewed up the entire back out of our new sofa one time and another time he chewed the corners of off my husband's wooden Bose speakers. Cackatoos just need a LOT of attention. We had to find him a new home, but I wish I had him back now that I'm retired. I still miss him. 😥
The tragic thing about these lovely birds is they will always outlive their owners. Please have a plan in place for someone loving to take care of your bird when you pass on.

Actually due to the explosion in bird trade they made it to Australia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Also, there is a wild population of these that have been in South Florida since the 90s due to escapees and naive releases.

Leopard Style - That is ridiculous. A 9 or 10 year old child can NOT take properly care of a cockatoo! It is challenging and difficult for adults, many end up having to be rescued because adults can’t deal with them... Adults have to get them (adopt), and make plans for their care when they can’t care for them anymore, so they don’t end out in a shelter.
I remember going to the Weeki Wachee in Florida during a family vacation in the 70s and seeing the bird show and the water ballet. Its funny that im now 58 and discover one of the birds that performed. I have 7 species of birds in my home now,most are rescues. . Im sure the bird show had some influence in my love for birds. 😀

The small parrots max age is about 15-20. The big ones can reach 80-90 quite easily.
Incredible!!! My bird is 33. She is amazing and willed to my daughter our vet said she’ll live to 80 to 120 yrs old. We got her when she was 2 days prior to two months old a hand fed very smart talkative middle aged bird. She is 100% a part of our family. She calls me mom. She’s smart and a Yellow Head Amazon. Very smart and I could not imagine my life without her. I made her a companion pet so she is licensed and will always be permitted to live with me and my daughter. I own a home so no one can tell me otherwise but prior to that I had landlords that tried to not permit her only in the past 5 yrs. Prior to that most landlords felt a bird wasn’t a pet because they have their own homes. But if you allow them they could destroy moldings and such. My bird Billie has been trained to not do those things. I really am great full to a person that has taken in and bonded with a bird that has likely seen many owners in its life. You are a blessing to all birds. I thank you.

Welcome To Trench Hi... Respectfully speaking, it generally does work that way with cockatoos. If they eyes are dark (almost black) they’re male, if a visible shade of brown then female. My cockatoo was too young to sex when I got her and when I noticed her eyes looked brown when the sunlight hit them, I said oh boy, I bet she’s a girl (which was good because I’d been calling her Cleo). Then when she was old enough to be blood tested, during one of her physical check ups, it indeed turned out she’s female. Anyway, maybe it’s not 100% accurate, but it is generally a good indication of sex. HOWEVER, in the case of Duster, I personally do not believe that the sex can be determined by this video as I feel we’d need to see him up close and personal and have some sunlight shining on him so we can closely examine his/her eyes. 😉 Anyway, hoping you have a blessed and happy new year! ✨

+Nova Smith I'd say a he, most cockatoos that I know of have the distinctive physical trait of having differing eye colours between genders. Or in other words males have black eyes females have brown

+Irish Eyes That isn't a reliable means of sexing an umbrella cockatoo. Only way to confirm is through a DNA test. There are enough females with dark eyes and makes with light brown eyes that you can't be completely certain without help from the vet.

Anna Lisa Hi... Agree!!! I’ve had one for 23 years. A Moluccan. No one should get one of these without also knowing they are currently the 3rd loudest parrot in the WORLD. And yes, they should be subjected multiple times to the ritual of “calling the flock” before bedtime. 😉 Oh, and mating, too. My sweet birdie is very VERY vocal when she’s forming an egg. To be fair to the bird, it is a life-long commitment and often limits where you can live. These are NOT apartment, condo or townhouse birds. I’ve heard my birdie yelling from a block away. 😂
I have to completely hand raised parakeets They love to chew on my door frames it’s annoying but I wouldn’t give them away for the world they mean everything to me If you’re going to adopt a bird of any kind They require a lot of time, patients, maintenance, care and attention

I've rescued a U-2 its been 1 yr now he's an older bird but I don't know his age, ( I've asked him but he refuses to tell me ) his name is Mad Max he was abused by his previous owner an is nervous and scared and will bite aggressively , he's gotten better but has a long way to go, it will take time & love but he's got a forever home now and someday maybe he will get better , it's our journey together .
I inherited one and would bite the crap out of me so I got a stick and hold in one hand if he trying to bite I put the stick in between us no longer use the stick occasionally bites it took about a year and half

Some people go by eye color to determine a parrot's gender, but that's not always accurate. For 17 years, Einstein the Talking Texan Parrot's owners thought he was female. Only when they had him DNA tested did they discover that he was male. (In some of their older videos, they tell him he's a "good girl".) Perhaps that was the case with this bird - that it was thought to be male but was actually female. Just speculating. :)
