Well, I hear what he's saying...and yet, the perfect mix of Smells like teen spirit is his mix. That's it. Butch Vig's is listenable, but the magic is on the released mix that he did. He sprinkled gold dust.

"There is no perfect mix." And yet if anyone has come closest to perfection, it's Andy Wallace.

"My philosophy is that there is no perfect mix". Couldn't agree more with him. I always remind myself of this, and I set deadlines on mixing my own music because of this. Taking too much time on a mix to adjust things to make it "perfect" is as pointless as a dog chasing its tail. Completion is better than perfection. Perfection doesn't exist.

Sonic ology Records+ By legend, you mean the most important part of every album I grew up falling in love with, and still love to this very day. Check out his discography, Rancid Out Come The Wolves, Korn's first few albums, Deftones, System, Dream Theatre, Sepultura, Mudvayne, Dope, Chevelle, Tool, APC, Rob Zombie, Sevendust, Staind, Shinedown, Linkin Park, Unwritten Law. I think the first 10 albums I bought myself and still own were all mixed by him. He's the most important and unknown member of most of our favorite bands!

It's good to hear such a prestigious engineer emphasise terms like "subjective" and "no perfect mix". A lot of the current narrative around mixing music is about being the "best". The loudest, clearest, most translatable, etc. It's good to remember that at the end of the day there are no absolutes in this game

Cool, but I can barely hear the bass on the chorus of SLTS, where's the definition in that? Butch Vig's mix actually is better in that very sense, and only because the bass is louder. And yeah this guy is one of the best mixers in the world, but that doesn't change that. Why the bass gotta be so quiet man?

a mix is never done lol it can ALWAYS be tweaked. you just have to stop somewhere and it should be up to the artist in as what THEY want. mastering is another story. due to constraints there is an end to the road you can travel down. cheers

Besides being a great mixer, Mr Wallace comes across as humble and easy going personally. He never states anything to be absolutely true. Every tought he puts into words is clear and easy to understand. For me it shows that the man really knows his job, and his overall cultural level is very high. Working with such a master and such a person is a great experience, I imagine.

How come such people at this certain age such as Andy Wallace be still Mixing Music as in their time of Age they are expected to loose the Ability to heart certain Frequencies Ranges including High Frequencies ?

    • @TimotheCatlin

If they mixed at safe volumes and protect their hearing otherwise, they could have maintained good hearing. Musicians are usually more the ones to blow their ears out from playing live and rehearsing loud.
